Detailed Description
Australia’s gastronomy is as unique as its wildlife, and a foodie expedition befits the country’s style of adventure. This is not just a country for eating at fine restaurants and exploring local markets, as this is where you can dive into the gastronomic culture and hunt for the ultimate ingredients. From remote coastal cliffs to hidden green valleys, this two-week tour has been handcrafted with Australia’s ultimate food and wine experiences at the forefront. You will go hunting for scallops and oysters, barbecue lobster on the beach, smoke fish and pickle seafood, meet with cheese and wine makers and wander wilderness areas where wild vegetables meet with native marsupials. Based around the southern region of the country and incorporating Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, this is a journey through both raw produce and the end result.
Of course, there are exceptional restaurants as well, along with cafes and small market stalls best know to the locals. So for each unique experience like harvesting scallops, there will also be a degustation menu or an inside look at one of Australia’s up and coming restaurants. Port Lincoln is all about the seafood while in the Barossa and Yarra Valleys there is a more traditional platter of red meats. Tasmania and Kangaroo Island are rugged places teaming with wildlife, and Melbourne and Adelaide offer a contrasting experience. Hopping between the destinations you can taste the food and wine that has put Australia on the culinary map, along with a new generation of Australian flavors.
Start your two-week tour with four nights in Melbourne, where the local market will provide some jet-lagged early indulgence before day two is dedicated to the Yarra Valley, a world-famous wine region where you can go behind the scenes at premium wineries. The Mornington Peninsula has yet to attract fame, but it is evolving as Australia’s next big food destination and is filled with artisanal producers, market gardens and wineries for your next day. Move next to Melbourne for a few more city highlights along with a gourmet food and art walk. Fly south to Tasmania next and start your island adventure with scallops and oysters, probably with some kangaroo observing. Bruny Island is the setting the following day with a chance to meet with cheese makers and forage for wild vegetables.
Fly privately to Kangaroo Island next and kick off the next day with oysters, lobster, olive oil, local wine and lots of wild nature, and you cannot miss the koalas here. Then head to the Eyre Peninsula for a complete change in culinary scenery as you jump into the commercial world of sustainable seafood, including tuna, crab, snapper and rock lobster. An iconic destination follows with two days in Shiraz country as you discover the Barossa Valley. And then finish in Adelaide, upcoming and full of promise, a lovely city to end two weeks in Australia. Interested in learning more by seeing some of our travelers’ Australia vacation tour reviews? Our trip to Australia was a trip of a lifetime and it exceeded all our expectation thanks to our travel agent from the Australia tour company. Our agent worked with us tirelessly for months to customize a package to fit our needs and our budget. Our trip consisted of 10 airline flights, 8 shuttle transfers, 7 hotels and 10 tours. Every connection went like clockwork and problem free. Each tour was well managed and professionally done. Every hotel was clean and comfortable with 100% satisfaction from us. We were particularly happy with Tasmania in general and the Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart.
Our 4 days in Sydney over New Years was fabulous and we loved the city. The Hunter Valley Wine tour was great and we were sorry to miss the Blue Mountain tour but it did not fit. Ayers Rock was enjoyable and we were glad to make it a brief stopover. Cairns was a beautiful location and we enjoyed our 3 days there doing Karanda and the Reef. As mentioned Tasmania was super special. We loved the Bruny Island cruise and the city of Hobart. We drove our rental car to Swansea with stops at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary (highly recommended) and historic Richmond. After a visit to Freycinet National Park which was lovely, we drove to Launceston.
Our 3 days in Melbourne after our Princess cruise was also very special. We enjoyed the city and the Travelodge Southbank hotel. It had the perfect location next to the Eureka Tower, the riverwalk and the free tram for the city. We flew home on Australia Day which was a little disappointing but no one considered that before the trip..

Our agent did a terrific job of suggesting places to go and things to see. With her planning, we were able to forget about the logistic hassles and were met at each airport by our limo (usually a Mercedes and one Rolls Royce!)..
Our accommodations were top notch (except for Kangaroo Island where there weren't as many choices). I especially liked reclining on our bed in Sydney and looking out at the harbor traffic under the bridge. Also, the apartment in Port Douglas was timed just right so we could have a free afternoon to relax and do laundry. And the service at our Hobart hotel was outstanding.
The small tour groups - from just us in the Daintree & Melbourne to just four and a guide in Kangaroo Island - were terrific. Larger groups weren't bad, though our van driver in Sydney kept stalling the vehicle.

Zicasso’s travel agency did an outstanding job organizing our four-week adventure trip. Our agent provided us with helpful information and listened well. We felt she truly “got us” and came up with an itinerary that was a good fit for our personalities, physical activity levels, interests, and priorities.
The trip was terrific. It is impossible to single out a favorite experience because there were so many highlights.
We had a good balance between experiencing nature in beautiful places, as well as art and culture. There were several opportunities to get up close and personal with wildlife that is exotic to us North Americans, both in the wild and at wildlife refuges.
We enjoyed many boat rides, including, but not limited to, a sailboat cruise around Sydney Harbour, a boat ride along the rugged coast of Bruny Island in Tasmania, and a ride in the ferry to and from the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) in Hobart.
The agency booked us in comfortable, good lodgings in good locations, mostly hotels, but notably a bed and breakfast on a family farm on Kangaroo Island, where the owner provided dinner and breakfast, and could have been a five-star chef.
Any enterprise that lasts for four weeks is bound to have a few glitches. None of the few we experienced were the fault of our travel agency and they were all relatively minor. Most importantly, whenever the agency became aware of an issue, they were always attentive and helpful, and managed to resolve the matter in real time and to our satisfaction.
