Family Vacation to Europe: Medieval Castles, Storybook Villages, Majestic Alps

What to expect on this itinerary
Your custom family vacation to Central Europe takes your family through the storybook villages and majestic landscapes from Prague to Vienna, where fairy tales were created, castles are real, and the majesty of daily life continues to grow. You feel the soft dough between your fingers, before twisting it into a pretzel and placing it on a sheet. The cave walls around you are covered in ice, and it looks like you have stepped inside a glacier. The kids marvel at the grand armory decorating historic castles and highlighting the medieval history of the encompassing mountains.

Prague – A Storybook Land
Prague’s skyline is over 1,100 years old. The spires tower over the old city, higher than the church domes. The castle stands atop the hillside overlooking the historic reaches of the city and the Vltava River. A mixture of Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau buildings create an architectural gem, encompassing the preserved city center. The cobblestones pave the laneways, winding in and out of antique buildings. The alleyways become narrow, before opening to a view of the famous clock tower in Old Town Square.
The statues on the Charles Bridge decorate the centuries old edifice standing above the gentle current of the river. The family arrives at the Václav Havel Airport, where your private transfer is waiting. The aroma of fresh dumplings and beef stew drift out of restaurant doors blending into the buildings. Locals walk around with cups of fresh ice cream from Mysak, with tempting flavors topping delicious cakes. Your family settles into the city that the kids say looks like a place fresh out of their storybooks.

My wife and I and another couple asked this European travel company to plan a trip for us to Berlin, Prague, Vienna and Budapest, with a stop in Cesky Krumlov and a separate visit by our friends to the High Tatras and Krakow. With the exception of a coupe of glitches in Berlin (the hotel, while very nice, was not near the central city, as portrayed, and a day trip for me and my wife to Potsdam was not what we expected and extremely disappointing, for which our agency reimbursed us), the trip was wonderful. We had requested well-located 3-4 star boutique hotels and Maggie and Lindsey of at our agency really delivered. The Abba in Berlin, in the main shopping area, was sleek and hip; the Am Stephanplatz in Vienna was quite nice and in an absolutely great location, directly across from the magnificent St. Stephan's Cathedral and within walking distance of everything to see in Vienna; the Century Old Town in Prague and the K&K Opera in Budapest were also great hotels located near many or most of the main attractions the Ruze (Rose) hotel in Cesky Krumlov was old, but the best in town. All of them included good service and excellent breakfasts. But it was in the tours that our agency really sparkled (Potsdam aside). We asked for individual tours rather than group tours, and our guides were either very good or outstanding, as were the drivers who took us from city to city (the difference in price between private cars and four Eurorail passes was not as much as we thought, and the drivers were anxious to act as guides as well, making the additional cost well worth it). Joe, our guide in Prague for two tours spoke fluent English, was trained as a lawyer, and had been part of the crowd that was fired on when the Russians moved into Prague in 1968. Not only was he full of stories and opinions, he was a cheerful and affable companion as well. Our guide of the Jewish Quarter in Budapest, Kata, was tenured professor who gave us tremendous insight into Jewish-Hungarian history and current European politics. We followed that tour up with an ourstanding traditional Jewish dinner at the home the widow of a rabbi of a congregation in Budapest. In addition to these tours, our agency arranged for fascinating tours of a food market (Budapest) and vineyard (also Budapest), and walking tours in Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Dresdan and Bratislava, the latter two as part of the drives between cities. We would not have changed a single one of these. As for our friends' extension to the High Tratas and Krakow, they said it was just as great as the part of the trip they shared with us.

Arrangements for our trip through Prague, Vienna, and Budapest were somewhat involved, as we also made overnight trips to Cesky Krumlov in the South Czech Republic and Hallstatt, Austria. By providing drivers for each leg of these side trips, Zicasso’s travel team was especially helpful in avoiding much longer train itineraries to these locations.
Overall, our travel company was wonderful in providing numerous recommendations at each location, private guides in all five cities, and were very flexible with adjustments to the itinerary or hotel locations based on our preferences. Their communication throughout the process was wonderful.

Just returned from a week long wonderful trip to Prague and Vienna booked by our agent at this European travel company. Our agent booked our hotels and airport transfers and arranged for two city tours and a day trip to Cesky Krumlov. Both hotels were ideal for our trip - great locations, friendly staff, clean and modern rooms. The guides for our city tours were top rate and gave us a wonderful overview and history to allow us to learn more about the cities and then plan where we wanted to see on our own. The bus trip to Cesky Krumlov was exactly what we were looking for - an easy way to see this picturesque town. Our agent was easy to work with and very available throughout the process. We feel we got a great value for our money in booking through this company. Couldn't be happier!

Working with this travel agency was awesome in planning my European Vacation. We visited Prague, Vienna, Austria and Munich. They were extremely helpful from the beginning planning stages and all throughout the trip. They made excellent suggestions of sights to see as well as setting up all of our transportation, tours and reservations for meals. Our European consultant was always at our disposal through a cell phone which they provided and she checked on us throughout our trip. We even had a private driver that drove us from Prague to Vienna by way of Cesky Krumlov which is a beautiful medieval town in the Czech Republic. We would not have known about the town if it had not been suggested by the company's travel consultant. This travel agency also has a very user friendly website that helps in planning a tour. I would highly recommend them to anyone visiting Europe-I know we couldn't have done it without them.

We had a very enjoyable and relaxing trip. We learned much about the history of the Czech Republic and Austria- in particular, the pre-history and the recent history (18th century to present). Also, it was interesting to experience the residual effects of the communist regime in Prague and the contrasting cultures of Prague, Salzburg, and Vienna.
Hotel accommodations were spacious and well-located. The hotel in Prague, while clean and spacious was not what we would classify as a 5* hotel, on par with the hotel in Salzburg or Vienna. The use of vouchers was problematic. With the exception of the hotel in Prague, the others seemed surprised when we presented them with vouchers. It was not clear to staff at the front desk that we had pre-paid, resulting in numerous back-and-forth discussions. The Hallstatt Museum would not accept our voucher so we had to pay to enter.
It was relaxing having a driver for day trips out of Prague and for transfers between Prague, Salzburg, and Vienna. Having the same guide/driver for 6 days in the Czech Republic was enjoyable and most informative.
Because of time constraints, we were not able to visit several of the places on our itinerary: the Mucha Museum, the National Museum in Prague, the Royal Mint in Kutna Hora, or the State Castle in Cesky Krumlov. We just drove past the village of Durnstein. Perhaps better planning would have helped here. We were surprised that one of our 3 days in Vienna was a National holiday-stores closed. The tour at the Johann W winery informed us about modern wine-making techniques but the wine pairing was not up to our or our guide's expectations.
