Sabi Sands Game Reserve – Big Five Safari
Every vacation should start with a warm welcome. But it’s hard to guess who will say hello first as you fly into Kruger National Park. A good bet will be on a slumbering greeting from a few rhinos; this park has so many that you’ll quickly lose count of how many you’ve seen. Perhaps an elegant zebra herd will be your first safari sighting? Maybe it will be an elephant emerging from the woodland? It could be a lion pride lounging in the middle of the path, content in the sun as you are transferred to the remote Sabi Sands. Settle into your luxury lodge and gaze out of the floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows. You probably came to Africa to see the Big Five. Over three days, there’s a good chance that you’ll see all five and more from the comfort of your bed.
Kruger National Park stretches for over two-million hectares, but the wildlife roams even further, wandering into a handful of private concessions that share unfenced boundaries. In an untouched animal kingdom of this scale you’re not going to be restricted to a few glimpses. This is complete submersion. Jump in with two feet and shake your head at the baffling abundance that surrounds you. Elephants prefer the forest, thumping away at trees as you slowly drive past. Hippos are magnetically attracted to the swamps, fighting over mating rights as they plow into the water. Out on the savannah and grasslands you’ll find dozens of antelope species, each bringing something new to the landscape. When it rains they’re spread far and wide, ferociously grazing on nature’s banquet. Arrive in dry season and they congregate around water, easily found by you and easily picked upon by Kruger’s predators.
Each day usually includes two long game drives. Wake early and explore the park at its most active. As a layer of mist still hangs in the distant valley the ungulates are on full alert. This is prime hunting time and it doesn’t take long before you spot a cat on the prowl. A leopard is advancing in the insipid light, dipping its neck and coldly moving through the grass. The impala seem to be a safe enough distance away, but one youngster has strayed a little far from the herd. It all happens in a flash, the leopard’s stealth perfectly complimented by its powerful jaws. It's just one example of the drama that welcomes early risers. During the hottest part of the day you relax at the lodge, soaking up the Kruger landscape from the pool, your room, or a raised wooden balcony.
Two rivers make game viewing around here remarkably easy. Sabi Sands becomes a haven for thirsty wanderers, and it’s easy to spend a few hours watching the procession pass by. Rhinos never seem to be far away when you’re in Kruger and they’re usually down at the river. Less than 20,000 wild rhinos remain in the world. Over half can be found here. Swap the wheels for hiking boots and go on walking safari through the riverine forest, armed game trackers ensuring that you’re safe amidst this world of rhinos and big cats. Smaller wildlife like bushbuck and springbok provide a charming alternative to the raw power elsewhere, while graceful kudu and hartebeest are best admired from this new angle. Over these three days you’re guaranteed to see a lot. And it’s all going to be experienced from a breathtaking proximity.

Our agent was friendly, knowledgable, responsive and worked hard to put together a great trip that did not blow our budget. The trip was incredible. We started with 3 nights in Victoria Falls Zimbabwe at a lodge that provided 5 star service and accomodations. The game drives there were a bit more tame than our later safari activity at Sabi Sands but we saw lots of elephants, Zebra, Giraffe and even a lion. Every transfer was arranged and if anything could have been upgraded perhaps it was in this area though the transfers were private and vehicles adequate.
Our next stop was Sabi Sands reserve where we stayed at Savanah lodge. They were terrific in every way. The guides and trackers were top notch. We saw all of the big five as well as wild dogs and other animals. Great food and room as well as personal touches made this place special and overall a great value and choice among the many options.
We flew to Capetown where we started at an elegant old world hotel on the waterfront, great choice. Trips to the cape point and wine country were very nice. If we were to change our itinerary at all it would have been to stay one less night in Capetown and stay one night in wine country on our way to the next stop which was at Grootbos a world class high end resort on the whale coast. Terrific high end cuisine, wonderful private suites and incredible views were the highlights and a great way to finish our trip.
Thanks to our agent for making our vacation the best one yet!!

We booked, what we thought would be the trip of a lifetime. It was so fabulous in reality, that we think we need to go again! We had turned almost all of the trip over to our travel agency to plan for us, giving them only a minimal outline of what we would like to see. They planned the trip and only with a few minor changes (e.g. add a day for a wine tour in the Cape) we booked. Frankly, we were a little nervous about placing a high level of trust in a company we only knew via Zicasso and the internet, but it was trust well placed and rewarded. Our trip consisted of 3 days at Cape Town, a few nights at Londolozi in Sabi Sands/Kruger, a day at Victoria Falls, a few days at Chobe Game Lodge on the Chobe River, a few days at Savute, and the last few days in the Okavango Delta at Xugana Island Lodge. Almost 3 weeks in total. All logistics were seamless with no problems whatsoever despite numerous hand offs and transports.

I was planning a South African Safari for my family of 4, and the information and options I researched were overwhelming and complex for someone that has no prior knowledge or experience with Safari's. I came across the Zicasso website and they matched me up with this safari travelcompany. My agent provided insight into the planning and options that I would have never identified myself. I had many questions both before and after booking this trip and communicated with this agent by email (from the US) due to the time difference. She responded immediately and thoroughly ever time. We just returned and the trip was Amazing and could not have gone better.
Upon hearing our goals, my agent suggested two private game reserves (3 nights each) in two different locations so we could get two different experiences. We stayed at Kapama Southern Camp in the Kapama Game reserve near Hoedspruit, and Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge in Sabi Sands. It was a two hour drive between the two lodges. We originally had reservations at Lion Sands which is next to Sabi Sands, but about three months ago, the Lion Sands burned down. Fortunately, our agent notified us just hours after the fire letting us know what happened and informing us that she was able to book the Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge - which turned out to be amazing. I've read that some folks had to receive refunds because they could not get reservations on such short notice in the area. We were really glad our agent was looking out for us and greatly appreciated all of her efforts and recommendations! We definitely got two different experiences that you can read below - each amazing in its own way and the recommendation to split the trip with two camps was perfect!
At Kapama, the brush was very dense with trees and bush so off roading was not possible. We frequently saw animals everywhere as we drove and there were differences in the quantity and frequency of some species at each location. There were interesting and fun excursions (Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center and Elephant Encounter) here that we could not get elsewhere. We could only do a hot air balloon flight at Hoedspruit but were disappointed that the winds were too strong while we were there so never did this. Kapama Southern Camp has a fence around it and ony the entrance is always open. Each morning we would come out and see wart hogs, Nyala, Kudo, Impala, and other animals near our room.
At Sabi Sands, the bush was not as dense with trees so we could go off road to track down big five which was amazing. It is a large area so we could drive for 20 minute or more withouot seeing any animals. Sabi Sands Camp is completely open (no surrounding fence) and there was a leopard sighting at camp for three consecutive days. This added an element of danger and excitement. Once at 0400, we were awoken by the monkeys in the trees indicating that the leopard was probably close by.

This African Safari Tour operator planned our trip to Leroo La Tau, Okavango delta, Chobe Game Reserve,Victoria Falls andUlusaba in Sabe Sands, South Africa. This company provided excellent and flawless service. The trip was within the budget without any surprises. Their advice and suggestions were very valuable to us. Their communications, mostly via emails, were prompt and courteous. We could communicate to the personnel in South Africa as well as in the US. The planning of the trip was detailed, including internal transfers and air bookings. We were also given detailed information regarding visas and vaccinations. We were provided with a number of phone numbers for contact, including emergency numbers. We experienced no hitch during the trip.

Absolutely awesome experience – better than we imagined! We spent time in Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park, the Okavango Delta and Cape Town. The service, guides, lodgings and experiences we had in each location were exceptional. This safari travel company and our travel planner made everything easy – we were greeted each step of the way, enabling us to enjoy our African adventure without the normal stress of traveling in another country. In Zimbabwe, we experienced majestic Victoria Falls both from the air and a guided tour through the park. We enjoyed a sunset dinner cruise on the Zambezi River. Our room at the Ilala Lodge was picture perfect and comfortable, plus we could see the mist rising from the falls. In Chobe National Park, we went on numerous game drives and boat tour with a dedicated guide. The Ngoma Safari Lodge was the most visually extravagant place we ever stayed. The view walking into the lodge literally takes your breath away as you look down at the Chobe River with herds of zebras, giraffes and antelopes moving between a small watering hole close to Ngoma Lodge and the river. Combine that with great location to Chobe National Park, exceptional guides, thoughtful and well-trained staff, delicious dinners and wonderful rooms with incredible views and you have the perfect safari location. In the Okavango Delta we saw so much wildlife (inlcuding a numerous lions and African Wild dogs and their pups) and were again blessed with wonderful guides, great staff, and lovely rooms in an amazing location at Sable Alley in the Khwai Reserve. Cape Town gave us an opportunity to relax at the boutique hotel and enjoy winery tours and a peninsula tour, as well as amazing restaurants.
Originally, I tried to work out an itinerary myself using online review and travel books, but became concerned about arranging transportation and guides. Then I contacted several different travel agencies. This travel planner quickly responded. She made everything easy for us. She worked with us on locations, desired experiences, dates and cost. We really wanted to see Botswana’s Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta. Two other companies were trying to steer us away those areas due to cost and availability, but our travel planner was able to make it happen for us. She took care of absolutely everything from lodging, car and in-Africa air travel, tours, guides, and even restaurant reservations for us in Cape Town. Amazing personalized service.
This company makes you feel very pampered and special. Our travel planner made time to meet us in Victoria Falls (her home base). In honor of our 30th wedding anniversary, the travel company surprised us with a complimentary dinner and bottle of wine at our Victoria Falls hotel, which had one of the best restaurants in Victoria Falls.
