Day 1

South Luangwa National Park – Into the Big-Game Wilderness

An elephant wanders past, trunk swinging, tusks curling. Thornicroft’s giraffes are half-hidden by the nearby trees, their heads poking above the canopy, and a zebra herd is nearby, as you wait for the rumble of hoofs that accompanies their gallop across the savanna. It is midday, and you have only just landed, but already you have seen so many of the animals that make Zambia special. On the drive from the airstrip to your camp, you might see 10 different species, the giants accompanied by the rare antelopes that thrive in this remote world. You land at Lusaka International Airport and are assisted onto a light aircraft bound for South Luangwa, the country’s flagship park.

Settle into the camp, and get accustomed to the wild animals roaming past. Even when you are reading a book on the veranda, it is good to have a camera on hand, as baboons swing through the camp and the odd hippo grunts in the river below. In the afternoon, you take a first full game drive in the park, exploring the landscape close to the Luangwa River. Antelope come to drink, the herds sipping away as sentinels keep guard with their ears pinned skyward. Follow the prints you see in the sand, to a pride of lions, majestic creatures hanging out beneath an ebony tree. At first, it seems they do not recognize your presence. Keep watching, and the lions start to move, elegantly wandering down to the banks to inspect their dinner menu. Return to the camp at dusk, and spend your first night beneath the stars, a floodlight illuminating the animals that drink from the river below.

South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana Family Travel Review: Cape Town, Franschhoek, Victoria Falls, Chobe National, Okavango Delta, 2-Week Trip

We just returned from a fantastic two-week trip to Africa, coordinated by our Zicasso travel agent. We started in South Africa (Cape Town/Franschhoek), then went up to Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls), and to Botswana (Chobe National Park and Okavango Delta). Every step of the trip was well coordinated and seamless. The guides and accommodations were fantastic and comfortable.

I can't say enough positive things about our travel agent. She is the most detail-oriented and responsive travel agent I have ever worked with. She has extensive knowledge of travel in Africa and was able to provide outstanding recommendations for every question we had for her. She checked in with us regularly during the trip to make sure everything was going well, which was greatly appreciated. She genuinely cared about providing us with the best experience possible. I highly recommend using her and her agency if you are thinking about traveling to Africa!

South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe Vacation Review: Safari, Wildlife, Nature, 13-Day Trip

We’re still not over our trip! Everything was absolutely fantastic. Thank you for organizing such a great experience and making it so effortless for me. I already have family and friends asking who I went through, and I’m guessing some of them will be reaching out to you in the next year.

I do have one small piece of constructive feedback about our camp in the Olifants West Nature Reserve. The staff, lodge, and food were wonderful, but unfortunately, the safari guide fell short. We had just come from the camp in the Thornybush Game Reserve (where we left our hearts—the guide there was truly exceptional, with such a great personality), so the difference stood out even more. At the Olifants West Nature Reserve camp, we saw very few animals and the guide didn’t engage much—he barely spoke, and when he did, it wasn’t very professional or kind, especially toward my son. My son even said the trip might have worked better in reverse, since after Botswana it was hard to adjust to seeing only a few animals a day.

That said, I’m so grateful for how smoothly you planned everything, especially on such short notice. It really was a trip of a lifetime for us.

Thank you again!
