Shinde Concession – Charms of the Okavango
Whether it's your first and fiftieth time, there's always something special about flying into Africa. Perhaps it's the raw landscapes that roll beneath the wingtips. Maybe it's the vast space that surrounds the runway. Most likely it's the exquisite sense of touching down on a land untouched and unchanged. There's the immediate feeling that this is a destination unlike any you have seen before. Botswana and the Okavango excel with these first impressions, enhancing them with the raw scent of adventure. Your international flight lands in Maun, where you transfer onto a light aircraft bound for the Shinde Concession. This domestic flight maximizes the impression of nature's untouched bounty; touch down and it's common to find animals like elephants and buffalo within a few meters of the airstrip.
The camp you will be staying at there is built into the trees, essentially a handful of tented chalets that feel like luxurious tree houses. It's a traditional camp with a variety of extras, like a swimming pool that's regularly visited by elephants. From a private shaded porch, you can gaze over the Okavango, filling your camera roll with shots of elephants, zebras, and giraffes. Check in, check out these views, then spend the afternoon on a leisurely game drive. It's an easy journey, looping through the concession for close encounters with the big game. As it's the first excursion, the focus is on going slow and starting the connection with nature. You'll return to the camp around sunset, where dinner is served beneath the Okavango stars.

We enjoyed our 6-day trip overall, but the $30,000 price felt high for the limited travel time and compared to other Zicasso trips we’ve taken. The first two days were problematic. We arrived at our hotel at 11 AM but waited 4 hours to access our room, which, despite being listed as non-smoking, had a stale, smoky odor. Transportation was an issue: although we booked private transfers, one excursion used group transportation, costing us an hour to pick up and drop off others, which prevented us from getting lunch. On another excursion, no return transport was arranged, forcing us to hitch a ride with another shuttle and walk the last mile to our hotel. Additionally, the excursion schedule felt poorly planned. The first excursion was with a group, not private as expected, and the second lacked the correct helicopter, forcing our family to split up and take the tour at different times. These issues were unacceptable for the price.
The second half of the trip was much better. the lodge in Chobe National Park was exceptional and nearly offset the rough start. I contacted our Zicasso travel agent about the transportation issues, but only after we faced some risky situations. I’m not sure I’d use them again and would likely try another provider. This was our 7th Zicasso trip, and while we trust Zicasso and plan to continue using them, this trip was not among their best.

The trip was carefully planned and we received optimal assistance throughout the trip and constant availability and monitoring during the journey. Our Zicasso travel agent was very professional and always available to respond to our requests and needs. The choice of hotels was excellent and reflected the expectations. The activities offered in the different locations were very well structured and the guides were of high quality, particularly those in Chobe National Park and Okavango Delta.

We just returned from a fantastic two-week trip to Africa, coordinated by our Zicasso travel agent. We started in South Africa (Cape Town/Franschhoek), then went up to Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls), and to Botswana (Chobe National Park and Okavango Delta). Every step of the trip was well coordinated and seamless. The guides and accommodations were fantastic and comfortable.
I can't say enough positive things about our travel agent. She is the most detail-oriented and responsive travel agent I have ever worked with. She has extensive knowledge of travel in Africa and was able to provide outstanding recommendations for every question we had for her. She checked in with us regularly during the trip to make sure everything was going well, which was greatly appreciated. She genuinely cared about providing us with the best experience possible. I highly recommend using her and her agency if you are thinking about traveling to Africa!
