Day 1

Kasane to Chobe River – Sunset on the Luxury Houseboat

Your first African sunset is a special experience. The sun will seem bigger than you have ever seen before, a burning ball that appears to linger on the horizon while casting a mirage across the floodplains and grasslands. The nearby river glimmers a golden hue, a soft color that contrasts with the tough skin of the hippos. A whole pod may emerge from the water and then scatter across the banks, heading out for their nightly grazing. Elephants are also nearby, and you will see large herds turning into shadowy figures as the sun disappears from the sky. Sunset from the riverboat is a sublime introduction to Africa, and your safari has already started.

Earlier in the day, you will have landed at Kasane Airport, where you will be greeted by a guide for your short journey over the border to Botswana and the Chobe River. Climb aboard, and you will spend an hour cruising downriver to get away from the lodges on the riverbank and into your own private piece of the river. With few other boats and very little manufactured noise, the region where you will spend the night is a prime place to encounter spectacular numbers of elephant and hippo, and they will look all the more impressive when you are also on the water with them.

Review: Africa Safari, Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Chobe National Park, Okavango Delta, Cape Town, Victoria Falls

Absolutely awesome experience – better than we imagined! We spent time in Victoria Falls, Chobe National Park, the Okavango Delta and Cape Town. The service, guides, lodgings and experiences we had in each location were exceptional. This safari travel company and our travel planner made everything easy – we were greeted each step of the way, enabling us to enjoy our African adventure without the normal stress of traveling in another country. In Zimbabwe, we experienced majestic Victoria Falls both from the air and a guided tour through the park. We enjoyed a sunset dinner cruise on the Zambezi River. Our room at the Ilala Lodge was picture perfect and comfortable, plus we could see the mist rising from the falls. In Chobe National Park, we went on numerous game drives and boat tour with a dedicated guide. The Ngoma Safari Lodge was the most visually extravagant place we ever stayed.  The view walking into the lodge literally takes your breath away as you look down at the Chobe River with herds of zebras, giraffes and antelopes moving between a small watering hole close to Ngoma Lodge and the river. Combine that with great location to Chobe National Park, exceptional guides, thoughtful and well-trained staff, delicious dinners and wonderful rooms with incredible views and you have the perfect safari location. In the Okavango Delta we saw so much wildlife (inlcuding a numerous lions and African Wild dogs and their pups) and were again blessed with wonderful guides, great staff, and lovely rooms in an amazing location at Sable Alley in the Khwai Reserve. Cape Town gave us an opportunity to relax at the boutique hotel and enjoy winery tours and a peninsula tour, as well as amazing restaurants.

Originally, I tried to work out an itinerary myself using online review and travel books, but became concerned about arranging transportation and guides. Then I contacted several different travel agencies. This travel planner quickly responded. She made everything easy for us. She worked with us on locations, desired experiences, dates and cost. We really wanted to see Botswana’s Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta. Two other companies were trying to steer us away those areas due to cost and availability, but our travel planner was able to make it happen for us. She took care of absolutely everything from lodging, car and in-Africa air travel, tours, guides, and even restaurant reservations for us in Cape Town. Amazing personalized service.

This company makes you feel very pampered and special. Our travel planner made time to meet us in Victoria Falls (her home base). In honor of our 30th wedding anniversary, the travel company surprised us with a complimentary dinner and bottle of wine at our Victoria Falls hotel, which had one of the best restaurants in Victoria Falls.

Botswana Luxury Trip Review: Safari, Game Drives, Wildlife, 9-Day Travel
The safari with one of the companies was nothing short of amazing! The camps in Chobe National Park, Okavango and in Moremi were very nice, the staff was incredibly welcoming, the guides were extremely knowledgeable, and the game drives exceeded our expectations. Also, the food and drinks were excellent.

Luxury Africa Safari Review: Namibia & Botswana, Etosha National Park, Skeleton Coast, Okavango Delta, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay

We are "active" seniors (retired language and science teachers) and asked this travel company to help us evaluate then arrange visits to 5 culturally and ecologically-distinct sites in southern Africa during February, 2019. We chose this time of the year because the safari camps are less crowded. In some cases there were only a handful of guests present, and often the two of us were alone on safari with the guide. This allowed us to set our own pace, to enjoy nature's sounds without chatter, and to engage readily with the very knowledgable guides who work at these camps. Using Windhoek as our hub (due to direct flights from Frankfurt), we first visited Swakopmund/Walvis Bay, then spent 3-nights each at Serra Cafema Lodge and Ongava Tented Camp in Namibia, and then Mapula Lodge and Jack's Camp in Botswana.

The staff - especially the travel planner - at this travel company were immensely helpful, and the on-site subcontractors they selected were 100% reliable, on-schedule, and friendly. In country arrangements booked by the travel company included transfers to/from airports by private van and seven flights on small aircraft to reach the four lodges, plus detailed advice about protocols and border crossings.

Except for Serra Cafema, there are many lodges close to the locations we visited, and our initial choices were based on on-line reviews. We had only positive experiences at each of the four lodges/camps. The staff were consistently friendly and supportive, the meals well planned and prepared (which is remarkable given the isolated locations of these places) and presented artistically, and all of the guides were amazing in their knowledge of animals and plants and ease of conversing (in English) on any topic. Given the sparse crowds, we were able to have extended conversations with them and often with managers and other lodge employees during meals and unscheduled times. It sounds naive, but having conversations about indigenous people, changing cultures, wildlife, and challenges due to changing climate and "modernization" while being on site brought richer, more meaningful understandings than our prior reading guide and history books.

Serra Cafema is remarkable, and puts a capital R in Remote. There are lots of birds (and crocodiles) along the river, and oryx and small antelopes abound, but one does not go there hoping to see the "big five" of African wildlife. Rather, it is the peacefulness, expansiveness, and serenity of this environment that are most impressive. The lush green and wildlife of the Kunene River basin contrasts dramatically with the adjacent barren desert containing amazing metamorphic rocks and multicolored sands, and visits to two Himba villages that provided insights to a unique traditional culture.

Ongava is on a private reserve adjacent to Etosha National Park. The water hole beside the camp draws a wide variety of antelopes, zebras, and elephants. While out on safari we were close-up with lions, cheetahs and white rhinos plus lots of bird species. It was worth visiting Etosha with its larger herds, but it is crowded and the commotion distracting.

We over-nighted in Kasane en route to Mapula Lodge in the Okanaga Delta region. Here we were serenaded by families of hippos behind our cabin, watched herds of cape buffalo and extended elephant families, and learned how short periods of rainfall quickly change the area from open scrub to "islands" of trees and wildlife surrounded by water. At our request a visit was arranged to the nearby village Eretsha, where we spent the morning at their primary school and visited the health clinic, learning much about the daily lives of these people.

Jack's Camp is unique, not just for being in the edge of the Kalahari Pan, but its spread-out tents, campy lodge, proximity to herds of wildebeast, zebras, and buffalos in addition to meercats, lions, cheetahs and many wetland avian species, and engagement with extended families of San (Bushmen) that camp nearby and introduce westerners to their amazing skills at surviving in such harsh environments. The manager and our guide were exceptionally gracious and accommodating.

Luxury Botswana, Zimbabwe & Zambia Anniversary Trip Review: Victoria Falls, Game Drives, Rhino Walk, 12-Day Tour
I wish I could give this trip and our travel agency a hundred stars. Both the trip and the service that our travel company provided were over the top! We visited a Camp and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, did a Rhino walk in Zambia and also stayed at a Lodge by the Chobe River in Botswana. I cannot say enough good things about Natalie, from our travel agency.  We started planning this trip in Feb 2020 with what was supposed to be our big 10th anniversary trip. Then Covid struck the very next month and we were forced to postpone the trip not once, but twice. Over the course of the next two years Natalie was on top of EVERYTHING. She worked with the places that we had booked and the airlines within Africa and was able to change our travel arrangements to accommodate the ever changing situation.  To start this whole process, we provided Natalie with some general guidelines on what we thought we wanted to do and our budget and she took charge of putting together our dream vacation. She put together several possible itineraries and we fine tuned our trip from there. Natalie is based in South Africa, while we are located in the USA. This distance was never a problem in any of our planning and I never felt uncomfortable with the fact that she was in a completely different country (and continent). In fact, Natalie scheduled a phone call with us early in our planning so that we could get to know her and she could better understand our expectations. Natalie was always very responsive and I could always count on seeing a response to my emails either same day or first thing the next morning if I sent something late in her day. Her level of service was always top-notch!Natalie was incredibly thorough in researching things like Visas, travel vaccinations, passport requirements, Covid requirements, etc. so that we knew what needed to be done to prepare for this trip as well as what to expect once we got there. The icing on the cake was when we got to our room at our final destination (Chobe) to find a bottle of champagne and a very special note from Natalie to me and my wife thanking us for booking our trip with her and recognizing our 12th anniversary! :-)  I still get chill bumps thinking about how touching that was and what it meant to us.

Review: South Africa Father-Daughter Safari, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Sabi Sands, Kruger & Chobe National Parks

3 Destination Safari Trip to South Africa and Botswana...  all logistics, transfers, airlines, reservations, excursions went off without a hitch, every thing flowed seamlessly. Our safari travel company and particularly agent did an excellent job pre-planning and sculpting trip to meet our needs and desires.  We wanted 9 day safari to various locations that had different terrains and bio-diversity, but wanted to be efficient with "travel times" and "travel days" to make use of limited 9 days.

Firstly, Kruger area in SA, our agent guided us away from some lodges and tented sites "inside the park" as one becomes limited to "on road" safari versus if at contiguous private concession [whereby animals freely roam from Kruger park into and out of concession] the safari guides will (and always do) take their Land Cruisers off road and into the bush, for example to find a leopard laying in the bush protecting his kill (water buck)... which this siting would never happen "on road" in the park.  Our agent and this company pushed us to Sabi Sabi Little Bush Camp which was 5 stars and beyond all expectations; modern, clean, impeccable and beyond the call of duty service, and great guides (our guide was great and very knowledgeable). We saw the "magnificent 7" in the first 24 hours [the big 5 plus cheetah and wild dogs].

Secondly, we flew from Nelspruit to Livingston airport in Botswana, had driver take us from airport to river border, hand us off to a boat driver that took us across the river, then he handed us off to another driver that took us through the Botswana customs and then drove us to Kasane airport to meet a 3rd driver from Muchenje Lodge to drive us 50 minutes to the lodge.  All logistics worked perfectly (coordinated by our safari travel company). Muchenje Lodge was 4-star (not 5 star) because it is a bit aged [old bathroom, old toilet, old fixtures] but they make up for it in "safari lodge family atmosphere" and great management effort, buffet style family meals with other guests. Their safaris differed as we were limited to "on the road inside Chobe National Park) type safaris versus off-road. But abundance of hippos, elephants, giraffes here make it worth it.  Just on one afternoon track we saw 36 elephants (different sitings) and over 30 giraffes in just over 3 hours.

Thirdly, we wanted to try a different bio-diversity at Okavango Delta, so our travel company and our agent after much batting back and forth during the planning process, and planning for "bush flights" we selected Khwai Tented Bush Camp by African Bush Camps (they own many lodges and tented camps).  Five Stars, full amenities for a "tented site" very modern, and excellent first class cuisine, high teas, breakfasts and service. Our safari guide was great, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Lots of lions and leopards.

We departed by bush plane (coordinated by our travel company and agent) to Maun and then back to Cape Town.  The whole trip was planned impeccably, and went off without a hitch, the logistics of which I could have never have personally planned or procured by myself. I'm sure we paid a premium using first class travel agent, but it was worth it to just lay back and leave all the coordination to others.

Would we use this safari travel company again? Yes, I had this agent book us a subsequent trip from Cape Town to Victoria Falls for the weekend after this trip, and once again was first class and logistically efficient.
