Medellin – Arrive in the Bustling Capital of Antioquia with a Day at Leisure

Colombia has shed its former reputation to reveal a stunning blend of cultural heritage, vibrant daily life, and one of the world’s most ecologically diverse countries. The state’s capital of Medellin has a cosmopolitan ambiance with the charms of an eternal spring spread across the hills. The streets maintain urban sophistication as they wind around the undulating valley beneath crisscrossing gondolas and a skyline of natural peaks and high-rises located at 4,900 feet above sea level.

There is an endless movement of commerce and industry in a city that promotes chic restaurants, stylized hotels, and a welcoming culture. Your private transfer will greet you at Jose Maria Cordova International Airport and escort you to a luxurious hotel, which overlooks the city’s dynamic center. The valley in which Medellin stands provides an endlessly mild year-round climate, giving rise to its nickname, the Endless Spring. You will find the aroma of arepas emanates from a small grill near the door of a café. The chef tops the grilled maize dough with a pineapple sauce full of sweet and savory flavors.

The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy the city at your preferred pace. You will notice the paragliders circle the sky over the towering buildings like one of the endemic birds of the jungle and the lush mountains frame the city with jade canopies.

One point of interest is La Comuna 13, formerly one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the city. It has transformed as it is now a focal point that clings to the mountainside above San Javier metro station. The escaleras electricas, open-air escalators, connect the city center to the formerly isolated neighborhood. You will admire the escalators, which have become artwork decorated with murals and graffiti that lead to a boardwalk with panoramic views of the vibrant streets below. The best way to experience the La Comuna 13 is with a local guide who can demonstrate the significance of the neighborhood’s transformation and the importance of connecting the people to the greater city.

Colombia Travel Review: Medellin, Bogota, Cartagena, Isla Baru, Culture, Nightlife, Coffee Plantation, Local Cuisine, 9 Nights

Our trip to Colombia was our third travel experience arranged via Zicasso. As was the case with our previous two trips, this one was managed nearly flawlessly from start to finish with the kind of attentive customer care we have become accustomed to with Zicasso and their partners.

The agent from our travel company went above and beyond in assisting us with all our planning, providing insights and recommendations only someone who has experienced Colombia fully can provide. She was very patient in helping us make adjustments to arrive at the perfect itinerary and then remaining in constant contact to ensure every minor detail was handled perfectly throughout our journey.

Our drivers and tour guides made sure we were greeted and escorted through each destination, from Medellín to Bogotá to Cartagena and our final destination on Isla Barú. While many friends expressed concern over our safety in Colombia, I can say we did not feel unsafe for a moment. The Colombia of today is no longer one riddled with crime and drugs, but rich in culture and charm.

We greatly enjoyed the thriving art scene of Comuna 13 and the nightlife of Medellín. Our hotel made us feel like we were in the middle of the rainforest, while just steps away from the bustle and excitement of the Poblado district. Our visit to a wonderful coffee plantation provided a full education on every step of the coffee-making process, from the berries on the tree all the way to a delicious cup, delivering a new appreciation for black coffee. I may only drink Colombian from now on.

Bogotá proved to be a modern city with an incredible food scene. Our agent arranged an amazing gastronomical tour for us one evening that catered to our dietary needs. We attended an amazing wedding on top of an old portside fort in Cartagena and enjoyed the charm of the old walled city before relaxing on a pristine beach off the coast, then heading home to tell everyone to hurry down to see all Colombia has to offer.

I can only say, Zicasso is the only way to plan your travel, whether alone or with a small group. For those considering Colombia, our in-country travel company carries my strongest endorsement.

Vacation Review: Luxury Colombia, Medellin, Cartagena, Bogota, Flower & Coffee Farm, Dinner With Local Host, History

A long overdue review of our fabulous trip to Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena and our guide last month.

Our tour planner listened by phone weeks before our adventure to what my husband liked (and disliked) when traveling and what I liked (and disliked).  We shared with him ideas from Colombian friends for places to stay and restaurants to experience etc. and our tour planner incorporated much of that into our adventure after many e-mails.  We felt confident that when we would arrive all would be safe and in place and it was!

The best part was the private tours he arranged that were not your typical tourist group tours.  Instead we got to know the owners of a flower farm and coffee farm and the youth at Commune 1 in Medellin and had an incredible meal in a private home w an amazing host.   How inspiring it was to learn what Colombia has been through and where it is today and get to know people who proudly call Colombia home. We truly felt as if this was not only a vacation but a geography and history  lesson in a most relaxed fashion.

From the moment we were picked up at the airport by our tour planner's colleagues, the conversation and info flowed and Zicasso delivered a professional, knowledgeable guide who made our stay spectacular.  It was our first Zicasso adventure and certainly will not be our last.  Thanks again for listening and delivering a wonderful trip.

Colombia Vacation Review: Medellin, Santa Marta, Tayrona Park, Rum & Chocolate Tasting, Cooking Class, Local Cuisine, Nature
Brian did a wonderful job in showing us the best parts of Santa Marta and Medellin. The itinerary gave us the opportunity to see the gems that we wouldn't have found on our own.  We enjoyed the excursions and all the extras!  Not only seeing the sites, but experiencing the people and seeing where they have come from and their optimism for the future of Colombia.  We had great experiences tasting great restaurant food and having the opportunity to learn to cook local Colombian cuisine was very enjoyable.  We learned a lot from the Shaman, learning about the biodiversity and plants at the lodge in Marinilla and at Tayrona Park, the chocolate and rum tasting - wonderful experiences!  Having our guide with us most of the trip was really super - he is a great guide and ambassador and we considered him more of a travel companion.

Travel Review: Luxury Colombia Trip, Medellin, Cartagena, Jardin, Rosario Islands, Coffee Farm Visit, Snorkeling, 7-Day Tour
Our travel specialist from the travel company organized a wonderful experience in Colombia for us. Our travel specialist worked with us to make sure that our trip included the activities we wanted to experience and the places we wanted to see. They narrow down for us the selection of hotels to stay in a good location with easy access to the places to we wanted to visit.  Also they recommended great restaurants in each location. Through their company we went to Medellin, a coffee farm outside Medellin and Cartagena. Everyone of their staff was absolutely lovely to be with and very knowledgeable about the history of Colombia, the impact of the guerrilla and the drug war on contemporary Colombia, the transformation of Medellin, coffee farming, the amazing variety fruits and birds unique to the region, etc.  Their guides and drivers were terrific and mostly bilingual. The travel company and their staff were able to provide experiences that maybe special for tourists to have access to.  We went to the barrios in mountains of Medellin where people were affected by poverty and drugs and showed us how in the last few years, it has been transformed into a dynamic and artistic community.  The people who live and work in this area guided us and showed us how they are working to build and educate their community. In Cartagena we stayed in a beautiful hotel in the old city, visited the major attractions and went to the islands to snorkel and enjoy the caribbean waters. Our travel specialist and the travel company did a wonderful job arranging for all the local airline tickets, transportation, hotel and restaurant reservations and guides.  Without their guidance we couldn't have been able to explore the country as extensively as we did.

Colombia Luxury Travel Review: Cartagena, Medellin, Santa Marta, Salsa Dancing Class, Cooking Lesson, Local Cuisine, Culture

We had a wonderful experience in Colombia thanks to Brian and his team at the travel agency. We traveled to Colombia for a destination wedding in Cartagena, and after several delightful discussions by FaceTime with Brian we decided to extend our vacation and travel to Medellin and Santa Marta as well. Drivers were there when we arrived at the airport and brought us quickly to the hotel. During the remainder of the trip, all connections and drivers were punctual and polite. After we flew to Medellin we were picked up by our guide who brought us to meet a sillatero (flower carrier) and to hear about the history of the flower trade in Colombia. We then went to a working farm where we learned how the flowers and food were grown and harvested. There was a clear intent to respect the people who were showing us their lives. We then went to Brian's resort outside of Medellin and it was beautiful and peaceful. We were so impressed with the commitment to sustainable approaches to the design, building, maintenance and plantings around the hotel. The food was outstanding, creative and delicious, using locally grown products. It was great to meet Santi, the third of the trio of the travel agency.Brian then took us on a tour of Medellin— Brian is a special guide, so intelligent and capable with a unique perspective as an American who chose to relocate to Colombia. We then took a salsa dancing lesson before finishing up with a terrific cooking lesson with Brian's wife who was lovely.During our stay at the resort we also did a rum tasting and a chocolate tasting tutorial which we enjoyed quite a bit. Finally, we flew to Santa Marta and were met by our co-guides. They were terrific guides, worked well together, and took us to some really cool spots in Tayrona National Park. They even improvised to give us a roadside fruit tasting tutorial which was really fun. Along the way, we enjoyed some in depth discussions with our guides, and we felt a personal connection with them when we said goodbye at the airport.

Overall, we would recommend the team from the travel company highly, for a personalized and flexible travel experience.

Colombia Travel Review: Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena, Orchid Farm in Rio Negro

This travel company did an excellent job. Their planning help assured that we got the most out of our time in Colombia. Their execution was near-perfect. Best of all, they coordinated exceptionally well with friends we wanted to see, in both Bogota and Medellin. For example they made last-minute changes to arrange meeting us at church after early Sunday mass, instead of at our hotel. At our request, in Zipaquira, they turned us over to friends rather than transporting us back to Bogota.

Accommodations were excellent. Every tour guide was knowledgeable, interesting, and reliable. They clearly worked hard to please us and make the experience safe, fun and interesting.

When there was a political protest in Medellin, the guides stayed on top of the situation so we saw everything planned but avoided any tense situation regarding the protest.
