Bajos del Toro – Arrive in San Jose and Travel to Bajos del Toro

San Jose retains the same active spirit and bustling nature you remember from your last Costa Rica vacation. The Central Market continues to bustle with the stunning colors of mango, pineapple, passion fruit, and papaya. The aroma of cherimoya soup drifts through the aisles, emanating from the sodas, small restaurants serving traditional dishes. The handmade crafts filling the lanes of the Outdoor Market at Museo Nacional still hold the charming allure connected to the customs of the Central Valley and greater Costa Rica.

Your flight lands at Juan Santamaria International Airport, where your private transfer greets you upon arrival. As you make your way out of the city, your driver points to the mountain ridges encircling the Central Valley. A slight blue haze dwindles over the verdant crops. Your driver calls the ridge the “Coffee Line,” the demarcation at around 5,575 feet above sea level where the coffee in the Central Valley ceases to grow. You are excited for this new experience visiting the area of Bajos del Toro, which offers the biodiversity of the cloud forest, along with luxurious amenities and wildlife, away from the crowds of Monteverde.

The roads take you around the bubbling activity of the Poas Volcano.  You travel over the steep mountain ridges where the air is noticeably crisper than that of the Central Valley. The cooler temperature overtakes the landscape as you reach the remote comforts of your eco-resort where you will take the time to relax surrounded by the serene sounds of nature. Your private suite offers a remarkable view over the canopy, while your Jacuzzi on the patio provides a soothing, private experience in which to indulge in the beginnings of your Costa Rica vacation.

Your return adventure to Costa Rica begins with your arrival at Juan Santamaria International Airport where the first of your private transfers greets you at customs and escorts you to a secluded, gorgeous lodge in Bajos del Toro. The quiet charm of the landscape welcomes you back to Costa Rica and offers a new, distinctive setting in which you can explore.

While in Bajos del Toro, you connect to the culture with a small tour of the nearby town where you will meet with a local restaurant owner to learn how to make regional tortillas. Travel Review: Luxury Costa Rica Tour, Osa Peninsula, Tortuguero, Dominical, Bajos del Toro, Arenal, Coffee Plantation Tour

From their first response to our enquiry, we had confidence that this travel agency had understood what we were looking for, from our trip to Costa Rica. They worked with us to fine-tune our itinerary and hotel choices, and made valuable suggestions when we were unsure of the best options. They responded promptly to all of our emails and phone calls before we left England, and were equally available throughout our time on Costa Rica. When they say that they are contactable 24/7, they really mean it.

On arrival in Costa Rica, we were met by the co-owner and his wife as well as our driver - this was a truly personal touch and showed their commitment to looking after us. They kept in contact throughout our trip - for example, speaking to us during internal transfers between the different places we visited. We felt confident that our travel agency would be there to solve any problems that may arise, and as with any extended trip, we did have a couple of problems. When we both picked up local virus, our travel agency arranged for the hotel to take us to a local clinic for treatment.

They offered an outstanding service when we missed an internal flight, due to heavy traffic, by arranging a private charter flight to ensure that we could reach our next destination. We were extremely happy with the standard of all of the vehicles and drivers that our travel agency used and felt completely safe on the roads. We enjoyed all of our destinations and the accommodation was excellent (with only one exception: our cloud forest lodge in the Bajos del Toro area which was very cold at night, as there was no heating. It really needed some).

In summary, this company are the best agents that we have ever used and we have no reservation in recommending them most highly.

Trip was well organized. The hotel in Bajos del Toro and the hotel in Monteverde were both great. We loved our little cabin in the rain forest, all the fresh food, the walks, the little farm and the MASSAGE!The hotel near Manuel Antonio National Park had amazing views. However, service in dining room was slow and terrible; this was also true at the Bar.  One day our room was not made up until 4 p.m. Our safe didn't work and had to be repaired. The travel company was very organized, considerate, responsive to our questions; very accommodating and kind. All guides for tours were on time, very informative and kindAll our drivers were AMAZING also.

Review: Tour of Costa Rica, Arenal, Bajos del Toro, Manuel Antonio, Sea Kayaking, Bird Watching, Canoe Tour, Ziplining, Wildlife

This year we decided to give each other a trip to Costa Rica as our Christmas gift. I mentioned to our travel agent that we enjoy photography and want to shoot birds and animals in the natural habitat. We really did not want waterfalls since we were at Victoria Falls a month ago.

Our agents greeted us at the San Jose Airport and gave us a Christmas gift and travel documents. Our driver was knowledgable and spoke English very well. He drove us to Arenal Volcano area. We were lucky to see the top of the volcano. The hotel had beautiful views, hot volcano heated pools, large suite with a hot tube viewing the volcano, delicious food and good, friendly service.

The Canoe Adventure was our favorite tour in Costa Rica. Our guides took the time to help us get great shots of the sloth, crocodiles, birds, bats, monkeys and iguanas. After the rafting trip on the Peno Blanco River, we had a snack of tortillas, cheese, plantains and coffee.

At night we had an Ecoterra guided night adventure which poured down rain so we did not see much. The homemade meal was ok.

The next morning at 5:20 am we went bird watching adventure which was a wash out. Just rained so we did not see many birds. Very disappointing since we got up so early.

Our driver picked us up and drove us to Bajos del Toro area to our lodge and spa. Even though he has broken English, he is a funny man who enjoys sharing the Costa Rica life with his clients. The lodge and property were beautiful and staff was very friendly. We enjoyed the outside hot tube, large cabin and snack time. We were disappointed that the chicken and beef were tough, trout was over cooked and not much on the farm to table menu that we liked.

Our guide took us on a guided hike to the waterfalls which was ok. Later that day I took the private guided Cultural Adventure with another guide which was ok.

We liked the Lodge and property but we felt it was not worth the cost compared to the other towns we visited in Costs Rica. We would have liked to spend time at the Corcovado national parks taking pictures of wildlife/Macaw birds.

Costa Rica Travel Agent Review: Rainforest Visit, Hiking, 12-Day Tour
Most of the trip was good. We loved our rainforest visit. The down side was our experience at the beach. We were looking forward to a beautiful setting and that didn’t happen. Our hotel had no pretty view and there were no taxi’s available in the town we stayed at.

Review: Luxury Costa Rica Vacation, San Jose, La Paz Waterfall Garden, Caribbean Sea, Snorkel, Hiking, Animal Refuge, Fine Dining

Flawless planning and execution!

From the beginning, the trip representative was eager to find out about and satisfy our wishes for this Costa Rican discovery.  First night was at a classy San Jose hotel with free breakfast in a beautiful outdoor dining room. The next two days where in a quiet retreat hotel in the rainforests  where is the rain stopped just enough to let us enjoy our excursions to waterfalls and the typical village closeby . We were supposed to stay in a suite but were upgraded to a large villa with our own Jacuzzi! Lovely welcomed surprise!

We were then taken by a travel company driver to our final beach destination by the Caribbean Sea. Hotel was to our liking as well . Food was marvellous and service pleasant. Hiking and snorkeling guides were most knowledgeable, on time and generous with information on the local fauna and flora.

I would definetely recommend the travel company to anyone considering visiting Costa Rica - especially for the first time.  Considering the quality of hotels and private drivers on four occasions, the cost was very reasonable.
