San Jose – Easing Into Costa Rica

To begin your adventure, you will touch down in San Jose, and the Costa Rican capital may feel a little different to your preconceptions. This is not a place of bustle, but it is a low-slung capital that is easy to explore on foot in addition to being very safe for families. The historic center and oldest neighborhoods of San Jose can prove extremely relaxing places to ease into Costa Rica and to make first impressions of the country. After landing at the country’s major international airport, you will be met by a local guide and transferred to a luxurious boutique hotel in the city’s center.

Your guide will discuss different options in San Jose, so you can plan the afternoon based on your energy and interests. By indulging in a stroll through the city center, you can admire wonderful 19th-century mansions and a string of plazas that have been enlivened by street traders and locals. There’s an exotic atmosphere here, and it is easy to see that you have landed in a place very different from home. San Jose is also symbolic of the country as it is safe, welcoming, and easy to feel at home. For dinner, you may want to try a restaurant that serves up traditional cuisine alongside dance and entertainment from around the country. Your guide can also lead you to a restaurant that serves more Western-style dishes.

Detailed Description

Costa Rica can mold to your mood. You can lounge in hot springs and spend lazy hours on pristine beaches. You can also walk across hanging bridges and zipline through the treetops. One day can be dominated by soothing water and relaxed scenes, while another day can bring the thrill of watching your kids come face to face with wild monkeys and sloths. With nature providing the settings, Costa Rica will be the destination where you can get active or completely relax. It is also an incredibly safe and easy place to travel, especially when you are on a private tour.

Two weeks is ideal for a Costa Rica family vacation. It allows enough time for you to visit different destinations, so you can enjoy the classic combination of city, volcano, cloud forest, and beach. This is one of the world’s most biodiverse countries, and nature will encourage you to slow down and appreciate the details, especially unusual and rare wildlife. With two weeks, there is more than enough for your children to do without getting bored, and you will be able to find time to truly relax. Everything is customizable on this tour, so you can take each day as it comes, mixing up the adventure and downtime.

Over two weeks, you will follow an iconic route through Costa Rica, visiting five of the country’s most enchanting destinations. You will begin in San Jose, which is a charming capital city where you can spend a day getting used to a new country. The following day, you will safely explore an active volcano. La Fortuna basks in the shadow of Arenal volcano and is an idyllic place to combine outdoor adventure with comfortable hours in hot springs. You will have three nights at a luxury lodge that has its own thermal pools and springs. A private guide will customize your daily itinerary, so the hours can be active or laid-back, depending on the interests of your family.

From La Fortuna, you will travel across the water for three nights in Monteverde, which is a breathtaking cloud forest, where you will be walking on hanging bridges and admiring an incredible variety of wildlife. Again, with three nights, you can take your time, try different activities, and tailor daily trips that suit your moods and interests. You will conclude your vacation with five nights on the Pacific coastline: first, in Tamarindo, then in Manuel Antonio National Park. Tamarindo is a classic beach town, where your kids can try surfing and the sand provides serenity. Manuel Antonio will combine wild monkey encounters with sunset sailing and more pristine beaches and bays. Flying between these destinations will mean that you see more of Costa Rica while preserving the laid-back atmosphere of this family vacation.

Costa Rica Luxury Vacation Review: San Jose, Manuel Antonio National Park, La Fortuna, Arenal Volcano, Nine-Day Trip

I cannot say enough good things about the team at Zicasso’s travel partner. It's not just that they arranged an amazing Costa Rican adventure for me and my family, but it's the service they provided that really made everything so seamless.

The amazing service began during the planning stages, when the team worked with us to build a travel itinerary that fit our timing and budget (not easy, given it was the Christmas holiday season and we got a late start in planning). Based on our interests, they provided a menu of options in each region of the country. When we had questions about excursions, they were quick to respond and happy to provide recommendations based on their intimate knowledge of the activities and providers. In the week leading up to the trip, they provided a detailed itinerary, as well as instructions on what to expect when we landed in San Jose.

The incredible service continued once we were on the ground in Costa Rica. Our travel agent and his daughter met us at the airport with a welcome gift of local chocolates. He introduced our driver and went over the itinerary with us. We exchanged WhatsApp information and he encouraged me to text/call at any time with any questions, issues, or feedback.

From the airport, we made our way to Manuel Antonio, with a stop for lunch and fresh fruit. We checked into the hotel and a lovely room with panoramic views of the ocean and a magnificent sunset. It was my birthday, and the travel team arranged for a lovely fresh fruit tray to be sent to the room, as well as restaurant reservations that evening.

After three days in Manuel Antonio, we were driven to La Fortuna/Arenal (a long drive) and checked into a large resort with excellent facilities and incredibly responsive service (we called to ask for a roll-away bed, and within two minutes three people showed up with the bed and sheets). While we were in Arenal, we messaged the travel team with questions about potential changes to the itinerary (including changing the time of a couple of activities, as well as adding an activity), and they responded within minutes, making all the changes!

After three days in La Fortuna/Arenal, we headed to Monteverde for a couple of days at a resort, a lovely property in a great location. We enjoyed a couple of days in Monteverde before heading back to San Jose for our flight back to the States. On the drive back, our travel agent called to thank us for entrusting our trip to them, but I had to stop him, as it was really us who needed to thank him for making the trip so enjoyable (and so seamless)!

Costa Rica Vacation Review: La Fortuna, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, Canyoning, Rafting, Ziplining, Wildlife, Hiking, 10 Days

Our 10-day adventure to Costa Rica in April was amazing. We spent time in La Fortuna, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio. Each area offered so much to do and see, and we took advantage of every minute.

We did a number of tours: hanging bridges in Arenal, a sloth hike, canyoning/rafting, a night walk with Costa Rican dinner, a coffee and chocolate tour, hike in the cloud forest, zipline, catamaran sailing, and a private guided tour in Manuel Antonio National Park. We had private drivers taking us from each location.

Zicasso’s travel company was very attentive to all our requests and put together a great itinerary. Having them to correspond with through WhatsApp during our trip was wonderful. I would highly recommend them for your trip planning. Thank you to the staff who were always there when needed. They are a five-star travel agency.

Costa Rica Trip Review: Tortuguero, Monteverde, Manual Antonio National Park, Wildlife, Waterfalls, Zip Lining, Nature, 14-Day Tour
This travel agency was fabulous. We would use them again in a heartbeat! They were with us every step of the way from designing our trip to checking in with us periodically during the trip to make sure everything was going okay.  The drivers they picked were top notch. They were so friendly and helpful. The tours they picked for us as well as the Tour Guides were excellent. I think the travel company made the most of our visit to Costa Rica. We were greeted at the airport by Francisco and taken to a beautiful hotel in San Jose. We were then flown by small plane to Tortuguero.  We were then met by our guide and his boat! He was fantastic and showed us everything from birds, sloths to crocodiles. We were personally picked up by our guide for every one of our boat tours - so much fun. We stayed at lodge in Tortuguero which had great food, great pool and fabulous staff.  It was just a wonderful lodge.  We then went to the hotel in Arenal which was beautiful.  It had breakfast included every morning and two pools - one heated by hot springs! We went on several tours and the guides were informative, very friendly and prompt. We had guides for the Sloth Tour, for the Bridges and for the Cave tour. Can’t sing their praises loud enough. We then travelled by car to Monteverde with our driver. How lucky could we get. He took us for our night walk  as well as a Cloud Forest Reserve walk. Great guy. So knowledgeable and personable. Another guide took us on a treetop walk and was super. We stayed at a lodge in Monteverde. View was spectacular, breakfast great and the people were so helpful. The birds and jungles were fantastic!  We then traveled to hotel near the Manual Antonio National Park.  What a hotel!  Everything about it was top notch.  On our way to the hotel we stopped to Zip Line at Vista Los Suenos Adventure Park. It was one of the highlights! What a grand time. Our guides were fantastic. We felt totally safe and it was very exhilarating.  The guys were so happy and fun to be around. The next day we went on a full day waterfall tour. We had our guides and we had them all to ourselves. It was a blast. Jumping off of cliffs, sliding down chutes and just seeing the beautiful waterfalls. Lunch was included and was marvelous. Efrain was our driver and boy could he drive! The next day we went to the Manuel Antonio National Park. Lovely. Our final tour was a night tour which was very enjoyable. Our guide was so knowledgeable. What a trip of a lifetime. We want to go back!

Costa Rica Travel Review: La Fortuna, Manuel Antonio, Rainforest, Ziplining, Whitewater Rafting, Cuisine, Wildlife, Nine-Day Tour

We had a wonderful time in Costa Rica and spent our time in La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio.

We were welcomed at the airport by a driver and tour guide, and transferred to La Paz, where we had a great tour of the gardens, waterfall, and wonderful wildlife (including sloths), then continued our drive to the resort near La Fortuna. The hotel was beautiful, with magnificent rooms, volcano views, and a spectacular, expansive buffet each morning with an omelet station, fresh fruits, and an extended selection of local, delicious foods, including a smoothie station. The hotel staff were friendly and provided great service. On the first night, we ate at a restaurant at the hotel which had a limited menu for our family.

We had a wonderful guide on day two who brought us to the Arenal rainforest, with hanging bridges, an aerial tramway, and a zipline which was beyond a spectacular, adventurous experience that we will not forget. We enjoyed the hotel’s thermal pools and excellent dinner in La Fortuna (varied menu and open to substitutions).

On day three, we had another day of adventure on the Balsa River for whitewater rafting. Our family of six had a spectacular guide who kept us exhilarated and safe! It was a blast and perhaps the best family activity! We enjoyed dinner at a restaurant in La Fortuna (good food, but pricey).

We had another great guide for our hike in the Arenal Volcano National Park on our fourth day and dinner at a local place with a very limited atmosphere, but a spectacular meal brought out on grills to continue the cooking of steak, chicken, shrimp, and fresh fish, with delicious sauces on the side. It was plentiful, wonderfully displayed, and delicious.

Day five was supposed to be a five-hour transfer to Manuel Antonio to include a crocodile encounter and lunch. Due to the Easter holiday week, it took 10 hours, but our driver was kind and patient, and we enjoyed our time together. We learned a good deal of Spanish on the way. We arrived where rainforest and beach meet at the hotel. The hotel was beautiful, but rustic, overlooking the water, and we had dinner. The staff were all great and helpful, getting our luggage handled at 5am and transportation as needed for restaurants.

On day six, we enjoyed the morning at the adult pool. There were monkeys all around us in the canopies and trees. It was exciting to watch and take photos! We had lunch at the hotel and then the guide picked us up on time and took us for a fun adventure on Damas Island: an estuary and mangrove kayaking tour. We enjoyed the dinner provided with the kayak tour, then had a late-night BBQ at the hotel!

Day seven was action-packed, with a transfer and spectacular, passionate tour guide for our outing to Manual Antonio National Park. We had lunch at the hotel and then another very exciting ATV adventure! We had a fabulous dinner at a café with a beautiful atmosphere.

On our last day, we were transferred very early to the airport and said goodbye to an amazing, adventurous family vacation.

We want to thank Zicasso’s travel agents for all their help in planning this vacation. They were patient, attentive, and accommodating of our relentless changes to the plans and restaurants. They were with us all the way from planning to arrival, and always available for any questions or guidance. All the plans were executed seamlessly and on time, with quality recommendations and team support. Thank you for all the great moments and memories!

Costa Rica Travel Review: Monte Verde, La Fortuna, San Jose, Manuel Antonio, Tortuguero National Park, Arenal Volcano, Ziplinging

Our travel agency organized the perfect tour of Costa Rica. Our small group of 4 were treated as VIPs from the moment we arrived at San Jose airport, until the day we flew home. We even received a "welcome to Costa Rica" call and special "goodbye" call from our agency. Every transfer and guided tour was on time and the drivers were good. There were no worries or concerns, each day was perfectly organized and each hotel was informed of our itinerary. Our travel agency provided us with a free cell phone for local calls as well as walkie-talkies to stay in touch with each other. This added an even higher level of security to our trip.

We wanted to experience an environmental tour that would introduce us to the rain forest, the flora, fauna, birds, reptiles & animals of Costa Rica. We were amazed by the scenery and the knowledge of our guides on each of our tours. Costa Rica is truly magical. All of the hotels were interesting and clean, the staff friendly and efficient.  We stayed in bungalows & cabins in the heart of the rain forest! The food was very good and served in more than ample quantities. Our last few days were spent at the Belmar Hotel in Monteverde and the luxury of that small inn and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, were a great way to end our stay.

Our only disappointment was that our internal flight with Nature Air from Tortuguero National Park turned out to have a connection at San Jose airport with a 3.5 hour wait for the second flight to Arenal. We were expecting a direct flight, and more time to explore the village of La Fortuna.

We would definitely recommend this travel company and will use Zicasso Handcrafted Travel to help us book holidays in the future.

Costa Rica & Mexico Travel Review: La Fortuna, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, Volcano, Hiking, Waterfalls, Safari, Beaches
We loved every minute of this trip! The agent was excellent and listened to what we were looking for and found hotels that matched our desires. We were looking for places surrounded by nature and that is what we got. The first hotel, in La Fortuna, was amazing! The view of the volcano and the grounds were wonderful! I loved our own cabin and deck. We enjoyed the tours that we completed in that area, The volcano hike and the La Fortuna waterfall with lunch after. The lunch was a complete meal and really delicious! We also did a float safari and sloth tour, which were so wonderful! I can't recommend them enough! The float safari was relaxing, and we saw such a variety of wildlife. We were able to see sloths and even babies on the sloth tour, which was not a refuge just natural habitat. The next stop for us was Monteverde and we stayed at a hotel where we could walk to town or just up the road for food and drinks and the nature trail behind was excellent for seeing wildlife. The tours we did there were a night hike and the swing bridges. The nigh hike was informational, and the swing bridges really were amazing, even though I am afraid of heights...Our next stop was Manuel Antonio and the place we stayed at was so top notch! The included breakfast was anything you can imagine done excellently. We loved the property and we walked to the public beach and town. Our day at Manuel Antonio was excellent, the guide was awesome! We loved seeing all the Capuchin monkeys near the cafe. The beach was divine, and we saw monkeys and sloths there too! Definitely plan on staying as long as you want and take the bus back to your hotel for like a dollar a person.
