Havana – The Old and New

Havana is a majestic city, steeped in colonial buildings, pulsating music, and inspiring history. Its seaside location casts a slightly salty aroma over the Malecón, the boulevard bordering the Atlantic Ocean. In the afternoon, the waves crash against the jutting rocks and splash over the sea wall. Couples stroll along the walkway, sip rum, and listen to the passionate sounds of the water striking the edges of the city. Your first image of Cuba comes from inside the plane. As you descend into Jose Marti International Airport, you look out the window to find tall grass stretching to the mountains in the west.

After you land, your private transfer greets you at baggage claim and escorts you to the elegance of your accommodation, which has housed international glitterati, from Frank Sinatra to Marilyn Monroe. After you settle into your hotel, your guide meets you in the lobby ready to introduce you to the city. Classic American cars roam around the vibrant music scene of Parque Central. The 18th-century mansion now housing Hotel Inglaterra overlooks the marbled walkway of Paseo del Prado.

The Plaza de Armas has acted as the social center of Havana since the city’s inception in the 16th century. Noble families would watch military processions from their mansion balconies. The baroque structures continue to outline the square, including the magnificent Palacio de los Capitanes, which hosted Spanish generals during their time in Cuba. In the Used Booksellers Market, you find a treasure-trove of enthralling literature of every genre. You can search for interesting titles and engage in conversations with Cuban readers about the most popular books in Havana.

Cuba Tour Review: Havana, Trinidad, Varadero, Beach, Cuban Jazz, Local Drinks & Cuisine, Hiking, 16-Day Trip
The travel company and Eli were nothing short of fantastic. The trip Eli curated for us to Cuba was perfect. Everything was taken care of - from accommodation, to food, drinks, sight seeing, and transport. She arranged a fantastic guide and private driver/car. Both the guide and the driver were great and took care of every need we had - even going so far as to wait in line at high demand restaurants so we had a table ready when we arrived. We stayed in Casa Particulars in Havana, Trinidad and Varadero. Eli personally inspects all the Casa Particulars that she will put her clients in - and they were all fantastic - clean, spacious and with the most gracious hosts. In addition to the accommodation, Eli also books at the best restaurants in each town hence we had some memorable meals which turned into not just eating but culinary experiences. The itinerary was packed with great tours and excursions - we enjoyed them all, which is a rarity! We visited Cuba over the Christmas / New Year's period, which is great weather-wise. The highlight of our trip was meeting Eli for a New Year's Eve party she organized for all her guests - the cherry on top of a spectacular trip!

Cuba Vacation Review: Havana, Trinidad, Culture

We really enjoyed the trip. Havana was great and we would like to return one day. The drivers were perfect and we really appreciated their kindness and friendly faces every day. Zicasso's travel agent was friendly and took good care of everyone. We loved the Havana BnBs. The staff at both places went beyond what was required. The accommodations were lovely. The BnB at the beach was OK. However, they need to improve the seating on the beach. There were only two chairs that were comfortable and the husband of the host was using one when we arrived. We never really got to enjoy the beach because the other chairs were too hard or missing cushions. I know that it was requested that we add a day to visit this area, but in hindsight, it was too far to travel in an old car for older people. It was hard on the back. Also, unless you are interested in the beach, there isn’t much to do. I would skip that area, especially if it’s for one day.

The food was good in most every location we ate. I didn’t particularly like the dinner when we were at the beach. Sometimes the meals were too large, especially after eating a big meal for lunch and dinner. One of our favorites was the pork sandwich, which we ate on the way to Trinidad – simple and smaller. Plus, eating such large meals at lunch took a lot of time.

I think additional time for sitting in cafés and enjoying music would have been good. We really didn’t get to enjoy much local music, which was something Gary and I were looking forward to. The days were pretty full, so we would have had to eliminate something in order to do that, but I think that would have been OK.

We particularly liked the events where we were able to interact with the locals. For example, the dance school was very enjoyable. We also liked the senior center where we dropped off our donations.

We really enjoyed our time and, as I said before, we hope we can return for another visit.

In conclusion, the biggest changes I would recommend would be less time eating at lunch so we could experience more things, more time enjoying the local atmosphere (like music in the late afternoon), not trying to do too much on a trip, and not traveling too far, but it was a great trip!

Cuba Tour Review: Havana, Vinales, History, Local Cuisine & Music, Classic Cars, Tobacco Farm, 9-Day Vacation
Everything went exactly as planned. Eli listened to us and executed perfectly. From the hotels to the guides, the sites and restaurants. We were met at the airport in Havana by a driver of a classic car and a guide. Both stayed with us for 5 days. They were very knowledgeable and we were completely comfortable in their presence and enjoyed their company and learned a great deal from them. Everything we were told was prepaid in advance was indeed included and even a last minute lunch place change didn't cause any issues. The places we stayed matched our criteria completely including safety, locations and cleanliness. The people that own and work at each establishment were fabulous and made us great breakfast every morning. The dinner restaurants that Eli planned for us were beyond fabulous. She nailed it! We ate in a farm to table home that is top rated in Vinales where the owners came and spoke to us and in Havana the superb, cool and delicious meals were literally highlights of our trip. Each evening after dinner we experienced local music in a different club.

Travel Agent Review: Cuba One-Week Family Trip, Salsa Lesson, Beaches, Culture & Locals

Guide Lorenzo was very helpful and did his best to make the trip comfortable.

Family agreed that the Salsa Lesson was the most fun and very appropriate for our varied ages (14 to 82).

More beach time would have been appreciated.

We should have given the trip planner more direction as to what we would like.

Travel Review: Cuba Vacation, Santa Clara, Trinidad, Havana, Museum of Fine Art, Zoo

This was our first trip to Cuba - my husband and myself. Though we travel often, we were advised to find a travel agency to prepare an itinerary for us and help navigate any administrative issues related to travel from the US. I am so glad I came upon Zicasso and their recommended agent. Briefly, I cannot imagine a better experience and initiation into Cuba. Our travel agent listened carefully to my hopes and desires for our brief (one week) trip and created an itinerary that gave us a truly in depth sense of the country and the people in a short period of time. All the personnel he selected for us - our guides and drivers - were wonderful and clearly dedicated to giving us an intimate and positive experience of Cuba. The three cities we visited - Santa Clara, Trinidad and Havana - offered a different perspective of this fascinating country, thanks also to the residents we met, including artists as well as individuals working in the service industry. We loved our lodging in both Trinidad and Havana - and felt very well taken care of by the hosts.  They all went out of their way to make us feel welcome

We learned so much, about history, architecture, art, food and of course - to my husband's delight - classic American cars that you see everywhere in Havana. This is what we love - to really learn about the places we visit - and while Cuba is complicated and perhaps we came away with more questions than answers, it was not for lack of discussion with the people we encountered more than willing to tell us about their Cuba. All in all, a tremendous treat.
