Havana – Adventurous Havana
When your flight lands at Jose Marti International Airport in Havana, your pulse is already racing. The excitement of venturing to such a unique city is almost unfathomable. Havana is a city of music and vintage American cars, a mixture of glistening and crumbling colonial mansions, and filled with elegant plazas. Your private transfer greets you at baggage claim and escorts you to the heart of the Old City. Cars with 1950s Cadillac frames and bright pink Chevrolet designs cast an image of a city set in the past. The stone façade of Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta watches over the edges of the sea.
The fortress provided a strategic position in the maritime defense of the city beginning in the late 16th century. A brass and wood chain connected the stronghold to Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro. In the case of a naval attack, the chain was tautened, which prevented ships from entering the harbor. A grand statue of General Maximo Gomes stands at the center of a traffic island. The war hero fought for Cuban independence from Spain in the 19th century. The general sits atop a horse and watches over the western edge of the old city, combining bronze and marble work that creates an enchanting impression.

This was our first trip to Cuba - my husband and myself. Though we travel often, we were advised to find a travel agency to prepare an itinerary for us and help navigate any administrative issues related to travel from the US. I am so glad I came upon Zicasso and their recommended agent. Briefly, I cannot imagine a better experience and initiation into Cuba. Our travel agent listened carefully to my hopes and desires for our brief (one week) trip and created an itinerary that gave us a truly in depth sense of the country and the people in a short period of time. All the personnel he selected for us - our guides and drivers - were wonderful and clearly dedicated to giving us an intimate and positive experience of Cuba. The three cities we visited - Santa Clara, Trinidad and Havana - offered a different perspective of this fascinating country, thanks also to the residents we met, including artists as well as individuals working in the service industry. We loved our lodging in both Trinidad and Havana - and felt very well taken care of by the hosts. They all went out of their way to make us feel welcome
We learned so much, about history, architecture, art, food and of course - to my husband's delight - classic American cars that you see everywhere in Havana. This is what we love - to really learn about the places we visit - and while Cuba is complicated and perhaps we came away with more questions than answers, it was not for lack of discussion with the people we encountered more than willing to tell us about their Cuba. All in all, a tremendous treat.

Guide Lorenzo was very helpful and did his best to make the trip comfortable.
Family agreed that the Salsa Lesson was the most fun and very appropriate for our varied ages (14 to 82).
More beach time would have been appreciated.
We should have given the trip planner more direction as to what we would like.

Our travel planner was great in organizing the trip, I am glad we stayed 50% in hotels and rest in Casas. The bathrooms in Casa in Ceinfugeous was gloomy and had a smell - thank god it was only one night stay. Glad we stayed 4 nights in Havana instead of 3 since there was so much to see in Havana. Glad stayed in Ceinfugeous for one night only on way to pink flamingoes and water falls. The mob tour (which I wanted) was a slight dissappointment, I expected more than seeing lobbies of hotels related to mobs with just pictures. Unfortunately the night tour (nothing happens before 11 pm) would have been great if we were not so tired - we left the tour at 10:30 pm since we were sleepy. The tour guides (very knowledgeable) and drivers were awesome. organization was seamless. overall a good trip

We really enjoyed the trip. Havana was great and we would like to return one day. The drivers were perfect and we really appreciated their kindness and friendly faces every day. Zicasso's travel agent was friendly and took good care of everyone. We loved the Havana BnBs. The staff at both places went beyond what was required. The accommodations were lovely. The BnB at the beach was OK. However, they need to improve the seating on the beach. There were only two chairs that were comfortable and the husband of the host was using one when we arrived. We never really got to enjoy the beach because the other chairs were too hard or missing cushions. I know that it was requested that we add a day to visit this area, but in hindsight, it was too far to travel in an old car for older people. It was hard on the back. Also, unless you are interested in the beach, there isn’t much to do. I would skip that area, especially if it’s for one day.
The food was good in most every location we ate. I didn’t particularly like the dinner when we were at the beach. Sometimes the meals were too large, especially after eating a big meal for lunch and dinner. One of our favorites was the pork sandwich, which we ate on the way to Trinidad – simple and smaller. Plus, eating such large meals at lunch took a lot of time.
I think additional time for sitting in cafés and enjoying music would have been good. We really didn’t get to enjoy much local music, which was something Gary and I were looking forward to. The days were pretty full, so we would have had to eliminate something in order to do that, but I think that would have been OK.
We particularly liked the events where we were able to interact with the locals. For example, the dance school was very enjoyable. We also liked the senior center where we dropped off our donations.
We really enjoyed our time and, as I said before, we hope we can return for another visit.
In conclusion, the biggest changes I would recommend would be less time eating at lunch so we could experience more things, more time enjoying the local atmosphere (like music in the late afternoon), not trying to do too much on a trip, and not traveling too far, but it was a great trip!
