Äkäslompolo – Dreamy First Impressions of Finnish Lapland

Kittila is an hour’s flight north of Helsinki, window seats providing a glorious idea of how remote Lapland really is. There’s nothing down below, nothing but snow and forest, a wonderland that is more surreal once you land. Except in early winter, the snow tends to be soft and powdery; jump into it and when you emerge the snow brushes off. Snow covers the white spruce and Douglas fir trees, forming peculiar shapes along the waxy needles. Pines and hemlocks also have their winter coverings, each tree a distinctive work of art that rises many meters above you.

Touch down and transfer by road – snow chains on the wheels – to a boutique hotel on the Äkäslompolo lakeshore. From here you look out across a frozen expanse, then onwards, out towards the sense of infinity that the Arctic Circle creates. At first, it all looks the same, snow and trees and wilderness from every angle. But even on this first day, you start to realize that every angle is different. This is a silent land and while some people escape to tropical beaches, there’s nowhere better than Finnish Lapland for resting and recharging your batteries. So discover the smoke sauna and hot tub on the lake, go for a walk or ski in the surrounding landscape, and appreciate the solitude of a first night in the Arctic.

Detailed Description

At first, it seems that everything looks the same. The white world extends in all directions, and it looks as if the wilderness never ends. Silence. Serenity. Solitude. The snow is marked by prints of huskies and a sled that came this way. Look in another direction and find different prints; reindeer passed here. Soon you learn that no two angles are ever the same in Finnish Lapland. Everywhere you look there’s a new detail, yet everywhere you go there’s the same thoughtful impression of silence. When you leave Finnish Lapland after a week, you realize that it’s the feeling of the wilderness that stays the same, an escape from everything else in the world.

This one-week vacation is the iconic Lapland getaway. You travel to the Arctic Circle and lose your senses in a wild world, reindeers and snowmobiles, and huskies taking you around. Brightening the nightly sky is the aurora, viewed around 150 nights per year in this part of the world. With six nights in Lapland including two in a glass igloo, you should witness the northern lights on multiple occasions with multiple colors swirling through the sky. There’s more to the evenings than this spectacle though, outdoor smoke saunas and hot tubs maintain the inimitability.

Handcrafted as the complete Finnish Lapland escape, this itinerary is designed for travel from November to April. The first snow falls in October and stays on the ground into May. December and January see little daylight but have a frosty, ethereal real, with dusk colors extending for four or five hours during the day. February and March tend to have clear nights and the spring equinox is generally the ultimate time to witness the aurora borealis. The nights brighten quickly after this, but snow continues to cover the ground, so many different adventures are possible.

You land in Kittila and spend several nights on Äkäslompolo’s lakeshore, where a smoke sauna stands on the frozen water. Then travel by reindeer to Levi and spend two nights in a glass igloo, the prime aurora viewing experience. The first days are relatively active with soft adventures in the snow. Take a husky safari through the wild, a very pristine connection with nature. Drive snowmobiles to get a sense of the land’s scale, stopping to go ice fishing on the route. Try reindeer sledding and craft your own path through the virgin snow. From Levi, you can ski and snowmobile as well, each day a chance to find your own way in Finnish Lapland. There are also options for fat bikes, cross-country skiing, kick sledges and tobogganing, even downhill skiing from nearby Levi.

Traditional foods are featured throughout with locally sourced ingredients given a fine-dining twist. Think berry juice, cured fish, pea soup, game meats and soft cheeses. Special winter suits are provided depending on the season, essential for a day of exploring when temperatures are regularly in negative Fahrenheit. While the safari-style activities are guided for the rest of the time, you can make your own exploration here, feeling the escapism and exclusivity of this white land. The silence is breathtaking, the solitude can be absolute, and the setting seems likes a place of magic.

Northern Finland Travel Review: Ivalo, Kittila, Dog Sledding, Igloos, Northern Lights, Snowmobiling, One Week Luxury Trip
My trip to Northern Finland was everything that I had hoped it would be. Excellent trip to the boutique hotel in Ivalo and glass igloos in Kittila. The flights were set up by Zicasso’s flight experts and made everything very easy for me. The travel company did an awesome job setting up the itinerary. They set me up with all of the excursions that I wanted to do, from husky sledding to snowmobiling to aurora trips to see the Northern Lights. We finished up with one night in Helsinki before returning home. Great trip that I would highly recommend. Thank you to Zicasso and the travel company for all that they did to make it amazing.

Finland Vacation Review: Hiking, Waterfalls, Icebreaker Tour, Five-Day Trip

Our trip to Finland/Lapland was beyond our expectations. It was like living in a fairytale! All the activities were very well organized and tailored to our needs. Every day, we were in touch with Zicasso's travel specialist to make sure we did everything at our own pace, without missing what we had arranged together. We felt like we had a local friend who wanted to show us the best of this lovely place.

She did things that surprised us and made us feel she was dedicated to providing a really great time in Lapland. She added much more than what our itinerary included, like arranging a dinner at the Ice Hotel as a gift, a personal tour of frozen waterfalls that avoided the crowds, and an amazing dinner of Finnish delicacies beside the fire in a hut. We had the experience of a lifetime in Lapland, without having to worry about anything!

We definitely gained a new friend in Lapland and will go back. Our boutique travel agency truly respects its guests and I highly recommend them if you want to visit Lapland and experience what this place has to offer in an authentic and carefree way.

Sweden, Norway, Finland & Denmark Trip Review: Aurland, Copenhagen, Inari, 4-Week Tour
Excellent trip to all of the Scandinavian countries and a (all too quick) trip to Estonia. The recommendations that were included by Anna were excellent--our notable highlights:Staying two nights in Aurland--loved it so much, we could have added another nightCopenhagen, Denmark--loved the area and would have liked to explore more of the towns beyond Copenhagen. Booked a private cooking class on our own that really enhanced the cultural experience and fun.Inari, Finland--fabulous wilderness lodge next to a prime fly-fishing river (they were in the process of extending their property, so we were told that the workers start at 7am--noise not an issue, a bit unsightly construction site that our balcony overlooked).Estonia--what a lovely old town. Definitely would have liked to stay a couple of nights exploring more.Hotels--Every hotel had a fabulous location, excellent for walking to main areas of the town, lovely accommodations and quiet at night (even the one in Copenhagen by the Central Rail Station--great soundproof windows).Guides--Every guide was lively, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Even our driver to Fiskars shared his wealth of experiences since he was a local of the area!Only issues we had were primarily with drivers meeting us (mostly not being there, or no indication they were our driver). Multiple times we had to call the company providing the service. One of the vans did not have functioning air-conditioning NOR windows that opened--and it was a 2.5 hr. drive and 28C/82F that day! Also, see notes below regarding the Ferry (not an issue of our travel company, yet worth mentioning for travelers). I absolutely would recommend this travel company to others and would use them again. They were extremely prompt to address any questions/issues we had along the way (we are experiences travelers so did not contact our travel agency for every no-show driver--we just dealt directly with the pick-up service company since thankfully our travel team had provided all of the contact information)!

Finland, Estonia, Norway, Denmark, Sweden Vacation Review: Helsinki, Oslo, Stockholm, Tallinn, 18 Days
We recently returned from an 18-day trip that was planned and booked by Zicasso's travel company, and we couldn't have been more pleased. We had a complicated itinerary that included visits to Helsinki, Finland; a day trip to Tallinn, Estonia; Stockholm, Sweden; Oslo, Norway; and overnight stays in three areas along the fjords: Flåm, Balestrand, and Bergen. Our agent worked closely with us upfront to plan a wonderful itinerary. We were delighted with the destinations, the hotel selections (at our request, small boutique hotels with character and good locations), the guides, the travel arrangements (eg, overnight ferries, drivers where needed), etc. During our trip, there was always someone available to answer any questions we had. We are seasoned travelers who have worked with many travel agencies around the world and would absolutely recommend them without hesitation.

Travel Review: Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Russia, Vilnius, Trakai, Tallinn, Helsinki, History & Culture

We loved our travel route and our private drivers. The cities we visited were outstanding - we especially loved Vilnius. We had a minor hiccup with our transfer to the ferry to Helsinki, but all's well that ends well - we made it in time and our travel company even sent some champagne to our room in Helsinki for the trouble.

Norway & Finland Vacation Review: Kirkenes, Tromso, Northern Lights, Snowmobiling, Dog Sled Ride, Ice Cart Racing, Cruise
Our trip to Finland (hotel in Ivalo) and Norway (the hotel in Kirkenes, cruise and Tromso) was the trip of a lifetime!  The star of the show for us was being fortunate enough to see the northern lights on multiple occasions.  Beyond that, we thoroughly enjoyed everything about our 3 night stay at the hotel in Ivalo.  The staff was exceptional, the lodging very comfortable, the food exceptional and the activities exciting and interesting.  We snowmobiled (day and night), raced ice carts, took a reindeer sleigh ride and, what we considered the most fun, drove a dog sled through the wilderness!  We then had a private driver to Kirkenes for a one night stay in a cabin.  Seeing the ice hotel was amazing, but sleeping there would not have been for us :).  However, the cabin, scenery, food and entire property were beautiful.  The next adventure was boarding a ship to travel from Kirkenes to Tromso.  The ship was very nice and the scenery along the coast were things we had never seen, and probably will never see again.  Simply beautiful!  I will say, if you are subject to motion sickness, beware! The Barents Sea can get very rough, and while safe, this cruise is not always smooth.  We arrived very late in Tromso and were unable to make our fjord cruise the next morning because we were just too tired and needed some extra rest.  We wish we had one more day in Tromso to explore, but we did enjoy our walking history tour and accommodations were comfortable. Working with Anna at our travel agency was a pleasure.  She was extremely responsive and attentive every step of the way.  She put together a great itinerary for us when we really had no idea what we wanted to do or see.  We only knew this was a place with the best chance to see the Northern Lights and we were very fortunate to see nature's light show at it's best!
