We outlined our desires to visit the Basque region of Spain and Portugal's Douro River Valley, with an emphasis on the culture, food, and wine of the two regions. We are in our mid-70s, so we asked that activities be designed at a pace appropriate for our age.
The itinerary designed by Zicasso’s travel team met all of these requests. Our guides/drivers were superbly prepared to explain the culture and culinary milieu throughout our trip. The guides were also universally punctual, open, and affable.
We were especially pleased with the excellent locations of our hotels. In San Sebastian, we had a really excellent pintxos restaurant across the street. The owner was exceptionally helpful in choosing items from the menu, as well as local beers. And in Porto, the hotel staff recommended a small, relaxed restaurant with excellent local cuisine just half a block away.
Our walking food tours of the two cities were excellent, both in the quality of the tastings offered and the pace through the cities. And our wine tours complemented our tastes perfectly. We could not have asked for more.

Our travel agency did an exceptional job on our custom trip from Barcelona, Spain, up to Rioja, then to Bilbao and San Sebastian, Spain, then to Bordeaux and finally Paris. This was a trip all about food and wine and our travel agency ensured a flawless trip. Our travel specialists worked very hard to find us the best hotels, a very balanced selection of dining, from exceptional Michelin star dining to various Tapas Crawls in Spain. Our travel agency arranged all of our transportation needs, again with perfect timing. Our private tours were all made with personable English speaking guides, and we were able to get into some very excellent vineyards. Overall, I highly recommend this company to customize an awesome trip that takes the worry out of traveling overseas.

Planning as described and all accommodations, transfers were as anticipatedGood road book with driving directionsRestaurants selection OK (would have preferred more bistro gastronomique recommendations)Activites recommendations OKHotel in Biarritz OK (nice design, but small room with too little storage)Hotel in Bordeaux excellent (great room, service, location)All tour guides and visits were excellent
Issues:Car pick-up in Bordeaux not as indicated. Was indicated outside of train station (1+ mile) and I called from train station to learn the company was inside the station.Tour in Saint Emilion was wrongly listed as the meeting point in Bordeaux and when we went there we learned that meeting was supposed to be in St Emilion i.e. 45 mn away. We lost at least 90mn of planned activitiesHotel reservations in Bordeaux were listed with breakfast included, but we learned at the hotel that it was not. If breakfast has been pre-paid we need to be reimbursed for 30Euros per day for 4 days.
Travel Company's Comments
I’d like to thank our client for this feedback. Firstly we are always looking at ways to make our road books more interesting and relevant. Sometimes we think they focus too much on restaurants; but in this case, it seems we should have been more detailed in that area. Point noted! With regards to the issues brought up, the car agency location changed on the 28th of April and I did not receive this information from our supplier. I am sorry you had to walk out of your way and I have alerted them expressing your dissatisfaction. With regards to the hotel, I called the hotel in Bordeaux straight away and they said that the breakfasts were not on your bill, and you were in fact not charged for them, but the parking costs and city tax were, for a total of 55.80€. We will certainly reimburse you for the breakfast costs in Bordeaux if we can get some document that shows their error. Could you please send us through some sort of document that shows that they charged you for the breakfasts if you have one? I really hope that this problem at the reception of the hotel does not taint your memories of your stay in France. Therefore If I can resolve any problem I would love to do so. Thank you again sincerely for the feedback we will use it to make our service more adapted and precise in the future.

Our trip itinerary was titled “Memorable Trip to Spain” by our travel company representative Ana. Her planning and coordination of our excursions, car rental, hotels and some meals were flawless. Everything was planned perfectly and went like clockwork. The excursion guides were local to the area and were extremely knowledgeable about the history, customs, and interesting facts of the area we were in. Being local allowed us to see sites far beyond the normal tourists. For example, at a winery in St. Emilion, France we were able to have a private tour in one of the oldest wineries in the area with the owner of the vineyard. After the tour he also showed us through his house.
Ana and her team were able to answer questions we had immediately. We questioned how to drop the rental car off in Barcelona and not only did they send directions, but they also sent a picture of the facility. While driving from San Sebastian to Alquezar we asked for lunch stop recommendations and they directed us to a beautiful location on a lake for lunch, something we would have never found on our own.
After our initial contact with Ana, we emailed and talked on the phone. We established a budget, a rough itinerary of stops, a rough duration, and the class of hotels we wanted. From there Ana put together a list of excursions at each stop and a list of 3 or 4 hotels that we could choose from. Once everything was decided on, she also gave us a list of recommended restaurants we could review and make reservations for our evening meals that were on our account. Finally, about a week before our trip she called to go over the itinerary and answer any questions we had. The entire process was simple and easy thanks to Ana and her team.
Finally, if you have not already noticed, we had a fantastic and memorable time on out trip to France and Spain. Thank you again for putting this together for us.
