Athens – Arrival and Greek Tavern Plate Smashing
Land in Athens and you will be transferred to Plaka, a 17th- and 18th-century neighborhood that lies in the shadow of the Acropolis. The roads are narrow and mostly pedestrianized, with lots of people on the street but hardly any vehicles. It can be an overwhelming place for anyone, such is the intensity of the smells and sounds. However, your local guide will be on hand to show you around and give you an orientation into all things Plaka. Think cobbled lanes of market stalls, numerous traditional tavernas, and public squares where local families meet each evening.
You will soon grow accustomed to the style, and there is an easy-going atmosphere that is ideal when you are with your whole family. While at first it can seem a little overwhelming, you will soon find Plaka to be a place where children are revered, and everyone looks out for each other. You can be yourself and still fit in while feeling safe and welcomed. You will end your orientation tour at a small tavern, where the mezze dinner platter provides dozens of new tastes and your children can try many different Greek foods. After dinner, you can smash the plates should you wish, partaking in a legendary Greek tradition.

Detailed Description
Family life is central to everything in Greece. You can see it on any Athens square as families meet up each evening. You can also sense it on the islands as visiting children always receive a warm welcome. Traveling with children can be done with ease in Greece, perhaps thanks to the local mindset rubbing off on everyone. In a culture that values simple pleasures, family is the most important of all. Good food is another pleasure. An easy-going way of life is also prominent, which only helps to make things easier for you as a parent. Even amid the bustle of Athens, there is a relaxed atmosphere that can rub off on everyone.
Families have been attracted to Greece for generations, but even as recently as 30 years ago it remained a challenge to travel here as there were not enough facilities to make it an easy vacation. Circumstances have changed relatively recently as hotel standards and transport connections have improved drastically. You no longer need a six-hour boat between islands or a night spent back in Athens before any international departure. Destinations are well connected now, and resorts provide the family-friendly amenities that can make your trip hassle-free. Greece now offers a superb combination of experiences and destinations, and there is something for every age over this 10-day best of Greece tour for families.
Your private tour will be split across three destinations with three nights spent at each. Athens provides the astonishing history, from the Acropolis to the lived-in neighborhood of Plaka. There is a lot to see and do, but the capital can also be compact. So while not everyone likes to visit many ruins and temples, in Athens you can have many of the world’s most impressive ruins in just one morning. Spend one day in the Acropolis before choosing whether to see more of the city. Then spend day three on an excursion to Cape Sounion, which is a combination of beach time and the fabulous Temple of Poseidon. Each evening you can visit the tavernas, enjoying local dining experiences very close to your hotel.
Take the fast ferry to travel to Mykonos, which is as comfortable and as fast as flying, for three days at a small coastal resort. You will be based just outside of the island’s main town, so you can pop in to explore and to eat. But the bay is quiet, so it is ideal for family time on the beach or time spent around the pool. Two days in Mykonos are kept free, with the middle day spent on nearby Delos, an island rich in history and endless ruins. It is highly educational here, the journey leading from the birth of Apollo through 2,000 years of ancient eras.
Another relatively short ferry ride will bring you to Santorini, the island of whitewashed villages and volcanic splendor. There is a lot to do here, including getting lost in the village of Fira looking for ice-cream. On day seven, you will take a private tour of the island and stop at a red beach, a vineyard, a volcano, and the most traditional Santorini villages. For day eight you will travel by catamaran for an afternoon cruise to hot springs, a black beach, and then a superb sunset experience. From Santorini, you can depart directly as your ten days in Greece comes to an easy conclusion. Looking for the best Greece vacation ideas? Consider browsing our Greece travel reviews page.

We were extremely pleased with the tour of Athens, Mykonos and Santorini our travel company created for us this May ! We first traveled to Athens and stayed in a four star hotel selected by them near Plaka. It was perfectly situated for us to walk to this old city area as well as the Acropolis. They selected a half day bus tour for us with an amazing guide. After Athens, we travelled to Mykonos and stayed at a five star amazing hotel with walking distance to Platis Yialis . They set up amazing tours of the island for us as well as to Delos and then a fantasic cruise around the Island. From Mykonos, we went on to Santorini, again another amazing four star hotel in Fira.
Our Greece travel company's customer service was amazing ! On our first day in Athens, one of the team met us, explained all the details of our tour, and all the sights we might want to see in addition to those we had already booked. They ensured that all our transfers were exactly on time and in the right place. At each destination, one of our tour company's team met us and again made sure all the details were in place
I can't say enough good things about using this company to travel through Greece to see exactly those sights you want to see, whether you are familiar with Greece or like us on our first trip !

A really great trip! The itinerary was exactly what I requested, and a good combination of coordinated tours and free time. Our agent did a good job of working with me to set a schedule that gave us a really good sampling of what Greece has to offer. He was able to find better pricing on my international flights than I was on my own. I had this company book everything from soup to nuts for a worry free trip.
Athens was pretty cool. A huge sprawling city, that we found surprisingly clean, friendly, and organized for such a large city. The hotel was a very convenient 5 minute walk to Plaka and the Acropolis. Breakfast on the roof every morning staring at the Parthenon was hard to beat. Go to the Acropolis as early as you can in the morning, and leave the air conditioned museum for later when it gets hot. The heat and sun after 11:00 are brutal. Plaka is the area below the Acropolis full of restaurants and shops. It is a very interesting old area and lots of fun to explore for tourists and locals alike. A great place to shop and people watch.
Mykonos is one of the major tourist destinations for the younger generation and party crowd. The little town is full of small ally ways with shops, restaurants and Interesting architecture. Cruise ships, private and charter yachts and daily flights all converge on Mykonos so, it can get very crowded. If you like to explore a little, you can get lost in the maze of ally ways and end up where the locals live. It was fun to watch the local children play soccer at one of the small schools on the island. Mykonos is the place to see and be seen. We took the tour to Delos to see the birth place of Apollo. This was a great close up, uncrowded view of ancient Greek civilization.
Santorini. What else can you say about Santorini? Its so beautiful! The views in every direction are unbelievable. Santorini is a more mature, higher end experience. Fantastic restaurants, great shopping. Bring extra batteries and memory for your camera. The sunsets are the best. Everybody kind of stops what they are doing for the last 20 minutes of the day just to watch the sunset. We took a wine tour that included a wine museum, a local farm that grows tomatoes, capers and pistachios, and a small "ghost town" with some houses from the last major earthquake in the 50's. We took a Catamaran cruise into the caldera for dinner and swimming. That was really great. The views from the water were fantastic and the service and food on the boat were very good. Santorini is a must see on any trip to Greece.

We booked a 2 week vacation to Greece with this agent and travel company for the end of May. Our travel agent helped us plan the perfect vacation for our 25th wedding anniversary. It was the most incredible trip, more than we could ever have imagined! She planned accommodations, excursions and tours at each place we visited that highlighted each place. We started our trip in Athens for 3 nights, Crete 3 nights, Mykonos 3 nights and Santorini for 4 nights.
We were met promptly at the Athens airport by our driver taken to our Hotel in Athens where we were met by our agent personally to give us all of our tickets and instructions for our stay in Greece. As well she gave us a cell phone programmed with her number and the travel agency in case we had any issues during our time in Greece.
We stayed at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens at a wonderful boutique hotel. Our trip started with a private tour(highly recommend) of the Archeological museum of Athens ,the Acropolis and the area surrounding. Truly specials and unforgettable! A romantic dinner at a beautiful restaurant in the center of Athens. Watching the sun set on the Acropolis with all of Athens at our feet...stunning. A free day to explore a bit of the ancient and beautiful city then onto Crete.
We were met by a delightful young man, who was our guide for all 3 days on this amazing island. Wine tours, Palace of King Mynos at Knossos, ancient cities Rhethmynon and Chania, beautiful beaches and stunning views. We fell in love with Crete.
Then Mykonos. A beautiful little jewel of an island with beautiful beaches and ancient cities once attacked by pirates. A romantic dinner, tour of the island of Delos (incredible!) and getting lost in the maze of streets that make up Mykonos town.
Then onto Santorini. A jewel in the beauty of the Aegean Sea. Stunning hotel on the cliffs with a view that you never tired of, wine tours, a full day Catamaran sail to beaches and the Caldera ending with a magnificent sunset at Land's End. Santorini was the cherry on top of the trip. Truly a stunning island.
And everywhere we went the friendly, hospitable and welcoming Greek people. We can't say enough on how well orchestrated this trip was. We had flawless connections, over-the-top accommodations, incredible guides, amazing excursions that did not disappoint at any of our island visits. "More than we could have ever imagined" is how we describe this trip to friends and family. We highly recommend this company and the travel agent who planned a trip exactly to fit us personally.
Thank you Zicasso for your stellar travel agents and fantastic job of Jackie who paired us up with such great agents to choose from.

The trip planned by Zicasso’s tour company was amazing.
The Mykonos hotel provided the best customer service I think we have ever had. It was an absolutely gorgeous place. The Naxos hotel was really nice too, but a little remote. It didn't have as many amenities and was a little more nickel and dimming on the services. Our Santorini suite was so charming. It was nice that we were all together in one suite at our last destination. The Athens hotel was nothing too special, but the location was good. I think something in Plaka with a little more charm would have been fun.
The excursions were great. Everyone loved something different. Every guide was great!
All the transport was on time or early, with great service. We used the same drivers throughout our stays on each island.
We love the Greek people!

I'm so happy I discovered Zicasso & this Greece travel agency. When planning the trip, I dealt with Anthony, who was always so quick to respond & incredibly pleasant & knowledgable. We traveled with extended family, eight people in total, so it could have been complicated, but with Anthony's amazing planning, everything went along very smoothly. We traveled to Greece and were interested in seeing some of the Cycladic islands. Since we only had eight nights to spend, we decided to see Athens, Mykonos with an excursion to Delos, and Santorini. Anthony helped us to plan a trip with the perfect blend of relaxation & natural beauty with rich culture & history. Whatever tours he arranged for us were private with wonderful guides & drivers/ captain & crew. In addition to touring the Acropolis & Cape Sounion while in Athens, we had a great shorter tour around Santorini by car. We went on two amazing boat trips, the first being a private yacht from Mykonos to Delos. The second was a private catamaran which sailed around the Caldera in Santorini & included a delicious authentic Greek dinner & a spectacular sunset. During both sailing trips, with the captain's guidance, we stopped for swimming & snorkeling wherever we wanted. The Agean felt gorgeous, and the hot springs on the catamaran cruise were lots of fun.
As far as hotels, we were thrilled with all of them, and Anthony tailored the choices to our specific preferences. They all had delicious food with breakfast included. The Electra Palace had Acropolis views from the rooms & from the rooftop pool & was located in the great Plaka neighborhood; the beautiful Myconian Imperial had huge terraces with private hot tubs & a private beach; and the Ambassador Luxury Villas was in the perfect location on Santorini with the most incredible views. There Anthony got us upgraded to the grand villa which accommodated all of us & had its own full-size pool & path down to the Agean.
The strong Meltemi winds interfered with our scheduled ferry from Mykonos to Santorini, but Anthony was paying attention to the forecast & booked us on a flight instead later that night, saving us from being stranded when the ferry was indeed cancelled.
