Athens – Ancient Greece, Plaka and the Acropolis
The Acropolis is your Athens compass point, its colonnades, and temples visible from almost anywhere in the city. You might even glimpse its splendor from the plane window, the remains of an ancient civilization perched high on the rocks above Greece’s capital. Check into your hotel and check out the rooftop view, the compass point almost within touching distance. Down below the streets twist and turn, and a myriad of sounds creep out from the tavernas and echo upwards, suggesting what’s to come this evening. But once your bags are dropped there is only one place for you today, the centerpiece of a civilization that changed the world in so many ways.
A path ascends, and the ruins start. Beyond the Beule Gate, you will glimpse what lies ahead with polished stone lies along the path, small sculptures sit on the floor, with temples coming gradually into view. Keep ascending, walking slowly in the heat, and take your time as the Acropolis temples and Parthenon rise high above you. It is the ruins of the Parthenon you never forget, so perfectly proportioned, so remarkably preserved. And although busy with tourists, there is enough to the area that you can also find quiet moments to take it all in. There is a chance to escape the heat with a look inside the Acropolis Museum, a place preserving marble and friezes that were rescued from destruction.
Maintain the slow walking pace as you descend, this time amid the cobblestone and marble of Grand Promenade. Skirting Acropolis Hill, you will be led to the Theater of Dionysus before plunging you forward into the 17th and 18th centuries. That is the time when Plaka evolved, and the neighborhood still has a lived-in old-world atmosphere. Boutique stores spill their wares into pedestrianized streets, enticing aromas come from narrow taverna doorways, and street traders call as they walk past. It is energetic and laid-back at the same time, classically Greek, but just completely different from the nearby Acropolis. Your guide will point you in the right direction for a traditional dinner before you take an early night, or stay out and enjoy all that is on offer.

Detailed Description
Nothing is rushed in Greece. Meals continue long into the evening, the walking pace is languid, and the mantra of siga siga, slowly slowly, can be felt everywhere. Even in the capital city, you will rarely encounter a sense of urgency. But to see the best of Greece in seven days? Surely that is a no-go given the languorous way of life? Not any more. Modern transport connections are making one-week itineraries possible, allowing you to hop between ruins and islands without missing out on the siga siga way of life. This best of Greece tour takes you to Athens, Santorini, and Crete with seven active days followed by seven tranquil evenings.
While the sights are many, you will not need to charge around. Slow down, change your perception of time, and appreciate the Greek ambiance that unfolds all around. In the evenings, you will discover one of the most cultural and traditional of all the world’s countries. During the days, you will explore settings beyond the imagination with the Acropolis in Athens, the blue and white villages perched above the Aegean Sea, the vast ruins of an old Minoan city, crystalline waters, towering volcanoes and the magnificent Temple of Apollo. Also included in this best of Greece itinerary is a helicopter and catamaran tour around Santorini, Crete’s remote landscapes, intimate Athens neighborhoods, and a whole host of other coastal and historical treasures.
Day one and you will head straight to the Acropolis. Explore the ruins beyond the Beule Gate, basking in the glory of the Parthenon and its nearby temples. This is classical Greece, and it is so much more impressive than the photos suggest. Plaka is a lively evening destination, perfect for strolling and eating local. Then the next morning you stay within history, seeing important galleries at the National Archeological Museum and passing another couple of temples. Fly next to Santorini and inhale the fresh sea breeze, and you will be staying in Oia, a village of blue and white houses that only gets prettier at sunset. Cliffs glimmer in the moonlight and your hotel is built on the cliffs, ideal for appreciating slow island life.
Spend day three exploring the best of mainland Santorini with beaches, villages, vineyards, volcanic remains, and then what remains of Akrotiri, a once lavish Minoan town. Santorini epitomizes the Greek island vibe, and you will continue to take things slow on day four, admiring the island from a helicopter window before a half-day private catamaran cruise. Fly next to Crete and savor a second island as Knossos is all dramatic ruins, Iraklion offers intimate market experiences, and other old cities present a maze of culture and charm. You will be staying close to the village of Ellinika, at a five-star retreat on cliffs that preserve this itinerary’s laid-back atmosphere.
Crete is vast and diverse, an island of beautifully barren landscapes and simple pleasures. Spend day six discovering rural sides to the island, the Lasithi Plateau a puzzle of orchards and pastures topped by tiny villages and cottages. Remote turquoise waters are nearby, the Elounda Peninsula a place to swim alone beneath the cliffs. You will have an early flight back to Athens on day seven, meaning you can spend the day visiting Delphi and the Temple of Apollo as it would not be the best of Greece without something majestic and mysterious to end on. Your final night in Athens is back where you started, amid tavernas and traditions in the neighborhood of Plaka. The itinerary is not the best for the price we paid and for a family with two children. We thought we could come back to Greece, but after this trip, we might not come back or even use Zicasso again. Here are the reasons: 1. The hotels are subpar for the price we paid for this tour. Our hotel in Athens felt like a 2-star. Our hotel in Santorini has a great view, but it's just a view, no pool, etc. nearby. Our hotel in Crete is not near a beach, a 20-minute walk. 2. Too much time was wasted on travel from one location to the next (Santorini to Crete and Crete to Athens). 3. Four nights in Santorini with two children is overkill since there is not much to do other than take photos, hike, and that's basically it. 4. Some of the tours are okay but nothing special, i.e., the hiking tour in Crete where they call the "little forest" is merely just for the name. It has nothing to do with the tour guides. All tour guides are great. However, we feel the tour company is crafting ordinary tours, labels it special, and calls it private. 5. In Delphi, we could have had more time to look around after the two hours. If any of the tours were great, it was the tours we had in Athens and Delphi. If we had known this type of tour we received, we could have done an all-inclusive resort in Greece and done our own without having to go through Zicasso and the tour company.

The travel fairy at Zicasso's tour operator, as she called herself (and I felt it fit her well), certainly put together a magical trip to Greece for our group of four. We all had a fantastic vacation in Greece and were super-impressed and pleased with the staff at the travel company.
The connections for flights and ferries, as well as all of the transfers to and from our hotels and excursions, were seamless, which made for a stress-free vacation. The hotels they arranged for us ranged from old Venetian buildings in older parts of Athens and Heraklion to an upscale small resort in Naxos, as well as a fantastic hotel in Chania that overlooked the harbor. My husband and I loved every one, especially the resort in Naxos.
I highly suggest this travel company because they listened to our group's likes and dislikes to plan the perfect trip. Our trip consisted of Athens, Naxos, and two places on Crete, filled with two food tours, a boat trip, historical excursions to the Parthenon and Knossos, as well as excursions in nature to Imbros Gorge and Balos Beach. Any guide during these excursions was very knowledgeable.
We would change only the following two things. Naxos was so beautiful and we were all sad to leave and wish we could have added an extra day to just relax on the beach for a full day. So, my suggestion to anyone traveling to Greece would be to save at least one full day at one of the beautiful islands without an excursion.
The other thing we would change is to take a boat to Balos Beach instead of walking down to the beach. My husband is 80 years old and although he is in good shape, the hike was very steep and scary in some parts. As we were walking down to the beach, we loved the incredible vistas, but were also concerned about having to walk back up the equivalent of 66 flights of stairs. I say this just as a cautionary tale to really look into this walk before your trip. The views were hard to beat, but the walk was not easy.
Highlights of this trip included the hotel in Naxos (our resort on Plaka in Naxos), with super-friendly and helpful staff, private tour of Knossos and the museum, and the charming city of Chania. Greece is truly a beautiful country, with stunning vistas, beaches, historical sites, museums, and cute narrow streets filled with shops and restaurants.
Thank you for a vacation that will stay in our hearts forever.

Zicasso's travel company made our bucket-list trip to Greece come to life! They organised all our tours and transportation, worked with us to provide activities that were in line with our interests, and even gave detailed information on suggested itineraries for our free days.
Some highlights included the walking tour(s) of Athens, our trip to see Santorini, and the best steak I have ever had at a beach hotel in Naxos! Our only suggestion is that we went on a day tour to Delos which was self-guided. There is so much history there though that a guided tour would have been helpful. I would definitely recommend booking your tour with them!

This was a dream vacation made reality–five stars!
We just returned from the most unforgettable two-week adventure through Greece, all thanks to the exceptional planning and care of Zicasso's travel operator and her team! From the moment we landed until our final farewell in Athens, every detail was flawlessly executed.
Our journey began in Crete, where we were welcomed by a warm, knowledgeable guide who brought Chania's rich history to life during all of our many activities. From touring the many villages to hiking Imbros Gorge to the Palace of Knossos, we felt immersed in the true spirit of Crete.
Next was Santorini, where the sunsets were just as magical as we’d hoped. Our stay was filled with stunning cliffside views, wine tastings, and personalized recommendations that made it feel like we were exploring the island with a local friend.
Naxos was an unexpected gem—less touristy, but bursting with charm. The tour guide here was particularly fantastic, taking us to authentic villages, ancient ruins, and serene beaches that felt like our own private paradise.
Our final days in Athens were the perfect ending to this epic journey. The historical sites were breathtaking and our guide’s passion for Greek history made every moment at the Acropolis and the museums feel deeply meaningful.
What truly set this experience apart was how responsive and supportive our agent and her team were throughout the trip. Any time we had a question—whether about transportation, recommendations, or small changes in plans—they replied quickly and helpfully, making us feel completely at ease and well cared for.
Throughout the trip, the logistics were seamless—beautiful accommodations, smooth transfers, and thoughtfully curated excursions. Every guide was not only professional and knowledgeable, but also incredibly kind and engaging. It felt like we were traveling with friends who truly cared about our experience.
We can’t thank our agent enough for crafting such a memorable and enriching vacation. Greece was always on our bucket list and now we’re already dreaming of our return!
Highly, highly recommended!
