Day 1

Reykjavik – Welcome to Reykjavik

As you step into Iceland’s capital city, you’ll notice its magnificent architecture, like the soaring Hallgrimskirkja Church. Admire it from below, near the statue of explorer Leif Erikson, a gift from the United States in 1930, before ascending via elevator to the top of its 244-foot tower where you can take in a jaw-dropping panoramic view of the city and its colorful rooftops, the North Atlantic, and the surrounding mountains. The three bells housed in the tower ring every 15 minutes, heightening the experience and making the little ones giggle at the thrill of the loud but lovely sounds.

Enjoy the rest of your day at your leisure, relaxing, or exploring this highly walkable city with a compact center that’s not only safe, clean, and simple to navigate, but also home to a thriving arts scene, fascinating museums like the Reykjavik Maritime Museum and The National Museum. It’s also well known for legendary eats like Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur, one of the world’s most famous hot dog vendors. An institution in the Reykjavik Harbor since 1937, it gained global fame after former US President Bill Clinton stopped in for a bite. Just a short stroll away is the stunning new Harpa building, a concert venue and conference center with the design of its facades inspired by the surrounding nature. As it sits at the edge of the brilliant blue bay, not only does it make for postcard-perfect photos, but you’ll be mesmerized by watching the water through the honeycomb glass. As you walk the streets of Reykjavik, you’ll find a pleasant surprise around nearly every corner, with so many of the walls and buildings decorated with creative, vibrantly-colored murals.

Detailed Description

Iceland is a land of otherworldly landscapes that make you feel as if you’ve stepped onto an entirely different planet. From the moment you begin this 7-day family-friendly tour, you’ll start to wonder if you’ve somehow landed in Narnia, with waterfalls, rainbows, glaciers, lava fields and soaring mountain ranges at every turn. Not just for adults, this is a magical, wondrous place that no child will ever forget – and it has such a strong allure that high tech gadgets are likely to be forgotten, at least for now. Outdoor adventures abound, which includes horse riding, ideal even for children and the inexperienced, as the small Icelandic horses are even-tempered and manageable. The thrill of watching a geyser explode into the sky is as remarkable as any fireworks display, and there are few things that can surpass the joys of watching a rainbow appear in the mists of a thundering waterfall.

Your adventure begins in the capital city of Reykjavik, renowned for its stunning architecture, street art, burgeoning food scene and friendly people. You’ll take in the panorama of colorful rooftops, the North Atlantic and surrounding mountains from the top of the famous Hallgrimskirkja Church before exploring this safe and clean city with lots of interesting shops, galleries, museums, and eateries, including the most famous hot dog stand in the world.

While Reykjavik is sure to delight, you’ll be amazed at what awaits in South Iceland, including two of its most spectacular waterfalls: Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. After stops at both, you’ll surely be pinching yourself just to be sure it’s not a dream. But it just keeps getting better – from here, you’ll walk on a glacier in an icy wonderland, where you’ll be able to see from the lines of ash just how many volcanic eruptions have occurred in this country throughout the millennia.

Along the Golden Circle route, many surprises await, including the chance to walk on two continents, gaze at Gullfoss Waterfall, visit the Geysir area with its erupting geysers and boiling mud pots, and trot across the countryside on Icelandic horses. It’s hard to imagine there’s more than this, but the jaw-dropping beauty continues with a trip to the Capital of the North, Akureyri, providing opportunities to taste fabulous local cuisine and experience the area’s rich culture as well as visiting the tiny island of Hrisey and its House of Shark Museum. The next day, you’ll explore the Lake Mývatn area, a landscape of mystical sagas and tales with an incredible array of bird life and unique lava formations before soaking in a natural pool of geothermal waters.

After flying back to Reykjavik, you’ll be taken to a farm and art studio, where the kids can get to know the animals, and you’ll enjoy checking out the gorgeous works of art before dining on fresh, local foods paired with home-brewed dandelion wine and enjoying a live performance of traditional Icelandic music.

Finally, no trip to Iceland is complete without a soak in the Blue Lagoon. Your last day here is sure to be a memorable one, relaxing in the warm, mineral-rich waters, soaking your cares away while the kids splash around, with everyone wishing that this trip would never end.

Iceland Trip Review: Glacier Hike, 8 Nights

Zicasso's travel company and, in particular, our travel expert, did a great job for us. With input from me, he planned a great itinerary, selected very nice hotels, and, lastly, selected a wonderful driver/tour guide for our party of six. Our guide was a native Icelander who did a great job of keeping us safe, entertained, and on schedule. We’d definitely work with our travel company again.

Zicasso's travel specialist was great! She was very responsive and flexible, and she created a wonderful trip for our family. The hotels were great and the pace of the trip was perfect for us. All the transfers and details were seamless and we didn't have to contact her at all because she prepared everything so well.

Iceland Multigenerational Tour Review: Reykjavik, Blue Lagoon, Horseback Riding, Lava Cave Tour, Glacial Pool Boat Ride, Waterfalls, Local Cuisine, 9-Night Trip

Zicasso's tour agency did an outstanding job of listening upfront to what we had in mind, asking key questions, and providing excellent input. He nailed the trip from the beginning, with only a couple of added activities requested.

The proof, of course, was the execution and the satisfaction of the group members. In our group were grandparents and two middle-aged families with four teens, ages 10 to 18. Everyone loved it! This travel agency provided an excellent and knowledgeable guide who diligently made sure everything was done to expectations.

The trip coordinator followed up during the week several times to make sure all was well.

The bottom line is that we had a great trip covering a lot of Icelandic highlights over our 10 days. The accommodations were perfect and as requested, and the food and restaurant recommendations were wonderful. We couldn’t have been more pleased with this company.

Iceland Travel Review: Glacier Hike, Waterfalls, 9-Day Trip

We had an outstanding trip. Every facet of it was well planned and conducted. We can't say enough about our guide. He was just exceptional; he was in good spirits every day of the trip, patiently answered our many questions, and expertly adapted to our needs and requests.

The Zicasso travel agency's owner was just terrific to work with, as he put together an itinerary filled with wonderful places to see and activities to do. From glacier hikes to being in and out of waterfalls, each day was better than the previous one.

So, congrats to them for being excellent at what they do and for providing all six of us with the trip to Iceland we hoped for.
