Edinburgh – Climbing the Castle and Walking the Royal Mile

Land in Edinburgh and a memoir to the past look down upon you. The castle stands proudly and powerfully above the city, an ode to times of glory and occupation. This is where the city was founded, a military stronghold with dazzling views over everything else. After the airport transfer and some time to freshen up you head straight for the castle, driving up to the imposing stone then walking down the hill onto the Royal Mile. Along these medieval streets, you find many city secrets; pubs, markets, squares, a mysterious cemetery and cafes that spill the smells of a nation. The castle and the Royal Mile is the Edinburgh experience, and after a private walking tour, you have time to uncover more nooks and crannies.

Detailed Description

Scotland and Ireland aren’t countries that you see. For all the visual beauty and legendary landscapes, these are countries that you experience. It’s not just a stunning lake within a glen; it’s searching for the Loch Ness Monster. A medieval Irish town isn’t just easy on the eye, but stirring to the soul as you walk on the trail of ghosts and go back to the time of Vikings. You don’t simply sit in a cozy traditional pub; you wear a kilt and listen to bagpipes. With so much tradition and culture, these aren’t countries where you sit back and take photographs. They are countries that invite you to get involved: learn about sheepdogs, tasting whiskey and Guinness, hike wild cliffs and Scottish Highlands, swing a club at the home of golf.

Perhaps the most iconic of the experiences concern elements of culture that have been proudly brought forward into the 21st century. Take the Seanchaidhean as an example, storytellers that spin long fanciful tales of Celtic glories and mystical fairies, holding you captive with their craic and their faithful rendition of the past. These aren’t stories you can read in a book; they are tales created through cadence and audience participation, every night is different over many hundreds of years. You’ll experience this storytelling in a three-century-old pub in Dublin, just one example of the immersive insight that’s provided on this handcrafted tour.

Five days in Scotland are followed by a week in Ireland. Fly to Edinburgh, where you climb the castle then walk the Royal Mile. Cross the Scottish countryside and discover the home of golf, along with the ruins of St. Andrew’s cathedral. That night there are bagpipes, and the next day there is whiskey tasting and traditional crannog homesteads. Travel through the Scottish Highlands and choose one of the hiking trails, then learn all about the sheepdog heritage that exists in this beautiful stretch of the world. Day five and you look for the Loch Ness Monster – actually, it’s a sublime boat ride across a legendary lake – as well as searching the soul of various ruined castles.

Fly to Dublin, and there’s a pint of Guinness at the brewery before exploring the city’s literary history, following in the footsteps of James Joyce a great way to experience Dublin’s nooks and crannies. Storytelling takes center stage – after some pre-Celtic history – before you travel south to Kilkenny and learn all about the city’s ghosts. On your final days, you traverse Ireland’s coast, through green fields to the Rock of Cashel, a night of folk tradition, and hiking wild swathes of Atlantic coastline. The Cliffs of Moher are just one highlight, but as always it’s about experiencing not just sightseeing, like when you sit outside a thatched cottage, listening to piped music, dining on local delicacies and chatting with the locals. Ireland Vacation Review: Dublin, Belfast, Galway, Cliffs of Moher, Giant's Causeway, Gardens, Book of Kells, Kylemore Abbey, Food Tour, 10 Days

We just finished 10 outstanding days in Ireland on a trip that was completely organized and facilitated by Zicasso's travel company. We built the trip around a one-day visit to the Open and, with a lot of advice from our travel company, we visited Dublin, Belfast, and Galway. From each of the cities, we had day trips that were led by a private guide from the company.

Our guide made this trip outstanding. He drove us for seven of the 10 days to the many sites we visited. He was so much more than a good driver. His knowledge of everything we did was extensive and really helped prepare us for what we visited. Additionally, we added and deleted on his recommendation, and all of those moves made the trip better. Some of the deleting, in particular, was because of the weather, and he adjusted to something that made the trip even better. He had a real gift for recognizing immediately our likes and preferences, and adjusted accordingly. Our favorite phrase, which we seemed to say on a daily basis, was, “You did it again," which was in reference to daily tips and/or stops that we made, all of which enhanced our visit to Ireland. He was very professional, punctual, and personable for the entire seven days. He was, without question, the best driver/guide we have encountered in our many trips to Europe. On a personal level, we had great conversations right from the beginning and he seemed more like a good friend than just a driver. I give him my highest recommendation.

As for the travel company, they created a comprehensive plan that addressed the many wonderful sites for us to see in that section of Ireland. Very little of their initial proposal was changed. They were always available when we had questions or concerns before and during the trip. This is a first-class and professional travel agency. I would recommend anyone traveling to Ireland contact this company.

Scotland Travel Review: Edinburgh, Portree, Isle of Skye, Inverness, Trossachs National Park, Safari, Sea Cruise, Waterfalls, Hiking, Local Cuisine, Scenery, 11-Day Trip

The trip was lovely. Working with Zicasso's travel consultant was delightful from start to finish. She had really great ideas for things to add to the itinerary and was great about incorporating things to see and places to visit that we already had in mind. It was truly a collaboration between the two of us to form the perfect itinerary.

I've worked with a lot of other travel companies to arrange custom itineraries for trips and this was one of the best. The app was very handy for quick changes and communication when we were in Scotland.
