Killarney – A Laid-Back Arrival on the Emerald Isle

For any golf trip to Ireland, it makes sense to fly into Shannon instead of Dublin. It is in the country’s Southwest, which is where the most famous and beautiful courses are located. You will land in Dublin, and it would be a five-hour cross-country transfer just to reach the first tee. So, you will land in Shannon today and be less than two hours to Killarney, which is a colorful old city that is situated inside a national park. You will check into your boutique hotel in the old town, and you can spend the afternoon exploring at leisure. Irish music seeps out from small pubs, colorfully painted houses line the main streets, and there will be a sense that you are in a town where time has stood still.

Detailed Description

Ireland’s luscious landscapes always make for a spectacular vacation. Coastal cliffs hang over tiny beach coves and Atlantic Ocean waves, and beautiful valleys carve a path through green mountains. These are stunning settings to walk, but even more stunning settings to play a round of golf. Dotted around Ireland’s southwest are some of the world’s most celebrated golf courses, including Ballybunion Old Course, Tralee, and Lahinch. Steeped in history and defined by Mother Nature, these courses will provide a serious golfing challenge, but in their undulating fairways and cliff-perched greens, they will also provide a vacation of serenity and surreal views. There really is no other landscape like southwest Ireland and golf is always a great excuse to go exploring.

Handcrafted for senior visitors, this seven-night tour can be further customized to include other bucket-list courses or attractions. It is the perfect itinerary for first-time golf visitors to Ireland, incorporating five iconic courses and the spiritual home of the Irish Open. You will spend five nights in Killarney, which is a city that is packed with Irish tradition and charm. Here, you can get to know Guinness, Irish storytelling, dancing, and the friendly atmosphere for which the country is known. County Clare will be your destination for the final two nights, where you will stay in a castle and tee off at two of the country’s wildest and most spectacular courses.

Along the way, there will be plenty of traditional, Irish sightseeing as well. For example, on day two, you will travel halfway around the Ring of Kerry for a round at Waterville. The highlights of the Dingle Peninsula will beautifully complement Tralee Golf Club on day three. A relaxed pace will continue throughout, and tee times can be adjusted to your preferences. Usually, you will play in the morning and have the rest of the day to enjoy the sights, whether that is just the clubhouse or any town or attraction that you wish to see.

The reason for being here is the golf, and the six picturesque courses will take you on an eye-catching journey around rural and southwest Ireland. Waterville offers a dazzling location and a number of highly unique holes, making it an excellent introduction for what is to come. Arnold Palmer designed Tralee winds around Atlantic Ocean cliffs, which is one of those courses where so many holes can linger long in your memory. Ballybunion Old Course is Ireland’s premier golf course and is perhaps the finest course anywhere in the world. It will be a supreme test of your ability, so it is best to have a couple of rounds under your belt before teeing off.

On day five, you can take a break from the seaside with a relaxed day in and around Killarney. This is a city that is located within a national park, and Killarney Golf Club’s superb Killeen course offers a very different scenic challenge. As with the other courses, you should be wary of the plus 7,000-yard back tees. You can often gain more enjoyment from playing shorter, especially on courses where golfers win championships without finishing under par. After transferring to County Clare and the castle, you will play at Lahinch, which is well regarded as the country’s second best course. You will culminate your golfing excursion at Doonbeg Golf Club, which is a course that is dominated by Mother Nature and Ireland’s green landscapes.

England, Ireland & Scotland Couple's Review: London, Dublin, Killarney, Ring of Kerry, Abbey Road, Edinburgh, Cooking Class
We gave this travel team a tall order. “Here is our days to travel, here is our budget, we want to see it all, even though we did not know what “it all” we wanted to see and we do not want to have to worry about anything! The travel team delivered in flying colors! From the time we landed in London and were greeted by our driver to the time we were dropped off at the Shannon airport in Ireland 12 days later, everything was perfect. The logistics, the hotels and guides were great.  Communication with the team was outstanding and they were very accessible despite the time change. The guides they placed us with were timely, friendly and extremely knowledgeable and their recommendations were on point. The hotels were comfortable and well located. Our itinerary was -London and the surrounding area, a train to Edinburgh, a flight to Dublin and then down Killarney, the Ring of Kerry and the surrounding area.

Ireland Family Vacation Review: Galway, Tralee, Killarney, Dublin, Cliffs of Moher, Ring of Kerry, Hiking, Culture, 1-Week Trip

Our family of four traveled to Ireland for 7 days following an itinerary Claire created for us. Right from our first inquiry in Zicasso, Claire was the most responsive of the agents we connected to. She incorporated our feedback from the initial interview into the itinerary, and continued to refine it till we were satisfied. All the arrangements were made thoughtfully, and you could tell they were made by someone who knew the place like a local. Airport transfers, hotels, guides, dining recommendations - all of it was executed without a hitch. We arrived in Shannon (highly recommend fly in/out of Shannon over Dublin), spent 2 days in Galway visiting sights in and around County Galway, traveled on to Tralee and Killarney before making our way to Dublin for the last leg of our trip. Our guide/driver, was amazingly well informed. Conversing with him on the longer drives was just as much fun as the beautiful Irish landscape. He made our trip extra special with his warmth and flexibility as we adjusted our plans real-time.Overall, we were very pleased to have worked with Claire and her team for an incredible experience in Ireland.

Travel Review: Luxury Ireland Trip, Dublin, Galway, Limerick, Killarney, Sheep Dog Demonstration, 8-Day Tour

We were extremely pleased with this Ireland travel company and the agent we worked with. This trip was two years in the planning due to multiple delays due to Covid and Julie worked with us every step of the way. The communication between us and her was always prompt and helped make sure we were able to do everything we wanted to do. The trip itself was wonderful. This was our first trip to Ireland and the specific itinerary, along with the suggestions made by Julie, we were able to get a flavor of both "Wild Ireland" and the City of Dublin during the eight days we were there.

The hotels booked by Julie were impeccable! The accommodations and service in Galway and Limerick were truly 5 stars and possibly beyond. The hotel in Killarney, has amazing service and is less updated, but still very comfortable and in a fabulous location in the town.

My wife and I strongly recommend Ireland to anyone who has never been and using this travel company for the booking of that trip.

Ireland Vacation Review: Kinsale, Killarney, West Clare, Galway

We had a lovely 10 days on the West Coast of Ireland.

We visited Kinsale, Killarney, West Clare, and Galway. We spent one night in a castle, which was a special treat.

Zicasso’s travel operator was a delight to work with. She listened to our wishes and put together a trip that gave us what we were looking for.

We had an outstanding driver who gave us lots of insight and information as we drove through the countryside. He was extremely professional, kind, and flexible, wanting to give us the best experience possible. He was also a very safe and responsible driver, and we were relieved to not have to deal with the narrow roads, flooded roads, etc. When rain interfered with our itinerary, he came up with alternatives that made up for what we missed. By the end of the trip, it felt like we were traveling with an old friend.

One of the advantages of using a local travel agent was that he was able to reschedule some of our activities based on the weather and our level of energy. He made phone calls and was able to make changes that I don't think we could have done on our own.

The hotels our agent chose were in great locations. We asked to stay in places where we could easily walk to restaurants and shops, and she delivered. The staff at all of our hotels were amazing and the Irish breakfasts kept us going until dinner!

Ireland Travel Review: Dublin, Killarney, Kinsale, Cork, Shannon, Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Moher

This travel agent arranged a six day trip of Ireland for my husband and myself, and it was just wonderful.  I provided her with some loose parameters and a general travel route, and she put together a great trip,  We began in Dublin with a walking tour and plenty of free time, as requested, and then travelled southwest to Cork where we stayed in Kinsale and Killarney.  We ended on the west coast near Shannon where we stayed in the fantastic Dromoland Castle.  Our accommodations were exactly what we had hoped for, a mix of guest houses and fine hotels.  Our agent arranged for a private driver/guide who made great suggestions and adjusted the sights we visited based on the weather.  He was a friendly and fantastic host, and I would highly recommend this form of touring. Our agent was quick to respond to all phone calls and messages, and provided us with a packet of informative travel materials at our first hotel.  Every detail was handled and we had a worry free trip. Our agent provided friendly, excellent service and we would recommend her highly.

Travel Review: Luxury Ireland Tour, Dublin, Galway, Kinsale, Kilkenny, Killarney, Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Moher

From the first line of communication to boarding our plane in Dublin, our travel agency's perfection in planning made our vacation a perfect dream.

I found this agency through Zicasso, and after filling out our wish list, our agent emailed me back with the PERFECT itinerary. I didn’t have to make one change, and she nailed all areas I wanted to see, and offered several options for dining, excursions, sites, and must-see and do things. (They were also extremely patient, as it took us about 3 months to actually book due to busy schedules!)

The agency did not book flights but was helpful in helping us find flights and then worked with our flight schedule to finalize our itinerary. When we arrived in Dublin, we were met by our representative who was truly wonderful in making us feel welcome. He was friendly and chatted with us about things to do and see in Ireland, and made us feel very comfortable and relaxed, especially after traveling for about 25 hours. He advised us on the best way to get out of Dublin when we got our rental later in the week and pointed out places of interest on our drive to the hotel.

Upon arriving at the hotel (AMAZING), we were met by friendly staff, and since it was 9am, our room was not yet ready, so they sat us down so we could relax and enjoy breakfast. They provided us with a place to store our luggage and freshen up so we could explore Dublin a little while our room was being readied. Our stay at the hotel was simply outstanding, and made even better by a welcome gift from our travel agency, a chilled bottle of Sparkling wine, handwritten welcome card, and a scented candle!

Our rental car was delivered as promised (wonderful) and the process was simple and easy. From Dublin, we headed to Galway for a two-day stay (stayed at a modern and posh hotel with a spa and edgy and fun décor), had dinner at an Inn, which was spectacular and then spent an evening out in Galway City Center with the locals. An amazing place with tons of fun pubs and live music. We then headed to Killarney (stayed at a 5 stars, and luxurious resort again with a spa). In Killarney, we went to the Ring of Kerry and explored St MAry's Cathedral and Ross Castle. The town is beautiful, and the Muckross was in the Killarney National Forest-Absolutely beautiful.

After Killarney was Kinsale, where we stayed at a seaside boutique hotel and just gorgeous. On our first night, we stumbled into a restaurantand pub, great food, neat ambiance. We were also able to find laundry services as we were beginning to run low, and the town was easy to explore on foot. In Kinsale, our agent arranged dinner at a restaurant that was by far some of the best we had (and that’s pretty good, considering all the food in Ireland was fresh, locally sourced, and simply outstanding).

After Kinsale, we headed to Kilkenny for our last night. My only regret was not adding one more night to fully explore Kilkenny. It is a beautiful medieval town with some pretty amazing scenery, and we just didn't have enough time to see it all. We stayed at a very luxurious and nice hotel, and our last dinner at was delicious. I had fish and chips, and can still taste them!

All of our wishes, desires, and hopes were fulfilled during our trip. Our agent and the travel company team somehow knew exactly who we were and what we wanted, and then delivered perfectly. I would absolutely recommend this company for all of your booking needs. Thank you Zicasso for connecting us with them, and thank you to the team at our travel company for the vacation of a lifetime!
