Naples – An Introduction to Southern Italy

Italy is a land of story. From myths of Sirens and sea nymphs to the impact of two world wars, one needs to look no further than their immediate surroundings to see evidence of the centuries-worth of history that has taken place here. This adventure will give you the opportunity to write your own verse to a story that goes back millennia.

All of this will feel like nothing but anticipation as your flight glides down out of the clouds to arrive at the Naples International Airport. A private driver will swiftly escort you from the busy hub of the airport to your luxurious hotel in the heart of the city. As you and your partner begin to admire the sights, your open window will ensure that the smells and sounds of this Neapolitan life greet you as well. You will be greeted to the sounds of children as they shout amidst a game of street soccer, the buzz of scooters and fiats as they precariously navigate the traffic around you, and the eventual sound of the ships as they come and go. These next two weeks will be your story, and Naples is the perfect setting.

Detailed Description

Southern Italy has long been the destination of choice for travelers from all corners of the globe. Even during the ages of antiquity, Roman emperors found the views and coastal grandeur of this region to be the perfect antidote to the civic stress of running an empire. This 14-day journey through some of the highlights of this region was designed to offer you the same treatment, but with fewer volcanic eruptions. This adventure also offers a handcrafted escape for couples who are seeking a blend of comfort and adventure.

The first leg of your journey includes an exciting stay in the bustling port community of Naples. From this starting point, you will have plenty of opportunities to explore the dynamic and lively neighborhoods of the city before striking out to enjoy a trip to the nearby community of Pompeii. It is this region that witnessed the stunning eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, which covered Pompeii in ash and left an indelible mark on the geologic and social history of Campania. The second leg of your tour will lead you to the Sorrentine Peninsula, and the Amalfi Coast makes up the Southern end of the Bay of Naples. These rugged mountains afford visitors a plethora of stunning views of mountains that drop precipitously into the azure waters. Much in the same way they have for centuries, Sorrento, Capri, Amalfi, and Positano will all offer you unique glimpses into these distinct societies that persist through today. Finally, Sicily in the South will beckon you with promises of exotic flavors and intimate settings for you and your partner to enjoy.

As summers can be quite warm, timing will be everything on this tour. The busier months tend to be June, July, and August for international as well as domestic travelers, so Spring and early Fall are usually the best times to go for those who desire a quieter setting. This enchanting region is also home to Homer’s infamous Sirens, which were sea creatures that lured sailors into dangerous waters with their beautiful song, but rest assured that uncovering ancient myths and enjoying yourself are your only requirements of this satisfying tour of Southern Italy. Italy Family Trip Review: Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Capri, Tropea, Cosenza, Napoli, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Pertosa Caves
I asked Carmen and her team at the travel agency to help us with a special family vacation in south Italy.  My grandfather came from a small village in the hills of Calabria, well off of the beaten tourist path.  The travel agency arranged for a truly spectacular experience, customized to our needs.  We started with a few days in Sorrento, a driver to show us the Amalfi Coast, and a guides to help us experience Capri from the land and water, before venturing south to experience the Pertosa caves, and a small Calabrian community in which many residents share our last name.  The itinerary next brought us to stunning Tropea and its beaches, and then Cosenza and Napoli, including private guided tours of Pompeii and Herculaneum, with a wine-tasting lunch in the middle!  The mix of private, curated experiences and free time to explore my family's Calabrian roots was perfect.  The travel agency took care of all of our needs, from beautiful accommodations, to kind, knowledgeable guides and drivers.  The team was in frequent but unobtrusive contact, and always available, to make sure that we had everything that we needed, from driver and guide contact information to dinner reservation assistance, if desired. We were captivated by south Italy's beauty and its welcoming people.  Carmen's willingness to help us travel to a few areas infrequently visited by Americans provided my family and I with positive, unique interactions and experiences that will make us remember this trip forever.  I wholeheartedly recommend this travel company for anyone interested in a special visit to a really wonderful country.

Italy Family Trip Review: Rome, Colosseum, Roman Forum, Sorrento, Pompeii, Capri, Pizza & Gelato Making Class, Path of The Gods
Our travel agency did a wonderful job putting together a once in a lifetime trip for me and my three children (14, 12, 10). All of the logistics of getting into and from places were handled by Monica which meant my family and I just had to show up on time and enjoy ourselves (a huge relief for someone traveling with kids internationally for the first time). You could tell that Monica had put thought into where she selected accommodations for us in Rome and Sorrento, making walking to our destinations very easy and the preferred way of getting around. Hotel accommodations exceeded our expectations and the kids and I felt like we were in a James Bond movie at our hotel in Sorrento on the side of the cliff with Mt. Vesuvius looming over the bay in the background. All of the tours we took were very professional and we stayed pretty busy and on the move with appropriate amounts of downtime programmed into our days for people to recover and prepare for the next outing (while eating delicious food).  Rome included a private tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum, pizza and gelato making class, crypts and catacombs tour, and general site seeing as we stayed near the Trevi Fountain and were within walking distance to many of the famous piazzas. Staying in Sorrento had us hiking Mt. Vesuvius, a private tour of Pompeii, boating and site-seeing the island of Capri, and hiking the Path of the Gods along the Amalfi Coast.  A wonderful trip my family will never forget and we thank Monica/travel agency over and over for putting together such an amazing trip for us! Highly recommend!

Review: Luxury Girlfriends' Trip to Italy, Sicily,Positano, Amalfi Coast, Capri, Pompeii, Mt Etna, Colosseum, Herculaneum

I worked with this agent to plan a memorable trip to Capri, the Amalfi Coast & Sicily with 5 girlfriends.  The trip and the itinerary that was developed was fabulous!  There were unique activities specific to the town or region that we were visiting that provided a slice of what life is like there. From cooking classes, to a visit to a buffalo mozzarella cheese farm, to tours of ruins in Paestum, Pompeii, and Herculaneum, to a lovely boat ride around the island of Capri, to a hike on Mount Etna - we were absorbed and delighted.  The hotels were lovely and the drivers engaging and knowledgeable about the area and able to customize local travel to our requests or recommend places that we would enjoy.  Our agent was also connected to local representatives to warn us in advance of any changes and he was personally involved to field requests for modifications to our original plan.  This was one of my favorite trips; to be able to travel with friends and share great food, wine, sights, laughter, activities and memories that will last a lifetime.  We are ready for our next adventure!

Italy Family Vacation Review: Sorrento, Naples, Matera, Puglia, Positano, Capri, Pompeii, Wine & Olive Oil Tasting, Pasta Making

We (family of 4 including two teenagers) had a wonderful trip to southern Italy the last two weeks of June:  Sorrento, Naples, Matera, Polignano a Mare (Puglia region).  With Sorrento as our base we saw Positano/Amalfi Coast, Capri and Pompeii.  In Puglia we visited Ostuni, Alberobello and Lecce, went to a wine tasting (with great wine!), and visited two masserias:  one for an olive oil tasting, and another with a pasta-making class.  Our travel agent at at this company helped us to plan a great itinerary.  She was very flexible and helped us keep within our budget, and the logistics she put together were flawless.  I also felt she truly listened to what we wanted - even her first draft itinerary was very close to the mark.  Highly recommended.
