Sorrento – Arrive in Naples and Transfer to Sorrento at Leisure

Sorrento is the perfect western gateway to the Amalfi Coast attracting 19th-century poets and authors like Lord Byron and Goethe, Dickens, and Tolstoy to enjoy the natural beauty that spans the Bay of Naples. The cobbled lanes wind along the glistening shore leading alongside palatial hotels and a network of boutique shops. The scent of the sea air fades beneath the ever-present aroma of lemons. Your flight arrives at Naples International Airport, where your private transfer greets you. Travel outside of the bustling southern city and around the bay passing the infamous peak of Mount Vesuvius. The grandeur of Sorrento is understated nestled between the staggering bordering cliffs reaching 180 feet above sea level.

The relaxed ambiance spreads across the beaches and former noble houses, as well as through the heart of the historical city center leading to Piazza Tasso. After settling into the comforts of your luxury hotel overlooking the charming waters lapping at Marina Grande, the remainder of the day is yours to bask in the welcoming charms of the city. The Basilica di Sant’Antonio has a dramatic exterior reminiscent of a brutalist office building, but the interior paints a more ethereal picture with uncovered Roman artifacts and medieval paintings reflecting dark themes. The gilded ceiling glints in the soft light embodying the extravagance of the Baroque design.

Detailed Description

Travel Italy from toe to heel during your 12-day tour following the illustrious coastlines of the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas. The majesty of Southern Italy is rooted in the soulful mixture of crystalline waters, chalky white cliffs, verdant vineyards, pastel-colored homes, and lush olive groves sprawling across the countryside. The famous towns of the Amalfi Coast and Campania illustrate the iconic beauty of the Italian shores while lesser-visited villages in Puglia exemplify spirit in the authenticity of medieval lanes and traditional restaurants. Your journey along Italy’s coastlines begins in Sorrento, located along the Bay of Naples. Your five nights in the charming city offers easy access to the captivating beauty of Campania, home to the marvels of the lesser-known preserved homes of Herculaneum and the infamous conical peak of Mount Vesuvius, the distinctive towns along the Amalfi Coast brimming with cinematic luster and the alluring scenery of the Isle of Capri. With its central location, Sorrento becomes the perfect base from which you can trek to the top of Vesuvius to view the steaming caldera or venture to the top of Ravello overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Relax on a night stroll alongside the ancient city walls or sample the delicious buffalo mozzarella after visiting one of the best examples of ancient Greek architecture on mainland Greece.

Two nights in the city of Matera bring to light the unique history of Basilicata and the way many places in Southern Italy that felt forgotten by the central government of Italy until the 1960s. The medieval architecture atop the cliff-side plateau hides the famous sassi caves in which locals lived for centuries. The greater towns around the Basilicata region take you to Castelmezzano and neighboring Pietrapertosa along the steep slopes of the Lucanian Dolomites immersing you in the traditional style contrasted by a distinctive zip-line connecting the towns on opposite slopes.

Italy Trip Review: Amalfi Coast, Herculaneum, Vatican, Capri, Pompeii, Naples, Sorrento, Pantheon, Boat Ride, Street Food Tour, History, Culture, Local Cuisine, 10 Days

We had a fantastic time and Zicasso's tour operator did an excellent job organizing every detail of our trip. Drivers and guides were always punctual, and the itinerary was perfectly balanced—full days, without ever feeling rushed.

Some real highlights for us were Herculaneum, the Pantheon, the Vatican, and our unforgettable Capri boat tour. Our guide brought Pompeii's history to life in a way that made it feel like stepping back in time and the Naples street food tour was delicious and nostalgic—her pizza fritta instantly took me back to the calzones I grew up with in Niles, Ohio. Our driver was with us for several days and made every transfer feel effortless.

There was a small hiccup at the very end with a trip planner, but it was minor compared to the overall quality of the trip. The organization, communication, and attention to detail throughout made this a truly memorable experience and we wouldn’t hesitate to book with this tour agency again. We had a fantastic time and the tour company did an excellent job organizing every detail of our trip.

Italy Travel Review: Capri, Amalfi Coast, Positano, Cooking Class, Private Boat Tour, Scenery, 6 Nights

The trip was perfect. We only booked everything about two to three weeks prior to our vacation. To make it more difficult, we are a family of five. Zicasso's tour company took care of everything! We didn't have to stress over any details. The hotels were better than expected and the excursions were beyond expectations.

The two highlights for our family (kids 17, 14, and 12) were the private cooking lesson and the private boat tour of Capri and the Amalfi Coast.

The cooking class with a local at her home was a night to remember. (Amazing family and the view was perfection.) Even my kids said it was perfect. We cooked, we ate, we laughed, and had a magical evening, all with the picturesque backdrop of the Amalfi Coast beneath us.

The boat ride was equally spectacular. We enjoyed the day swimming in the sea and touring all of the grottos and legends of the area. I couldn't have asked for a more relaxing way to see the sites.

The trip was a little more than I originally wanted to spend, but was well worth every penny at the end of the day. I've already forgotten the cost, but will savor the memories with my family forever. The tour company really did an excellent job of planning every detail to ensure we had an amazing time. The regular communication and check-ins provided a stress-free vacation.

Another really nice touch was the chaperone to and from the boat docks in Capri to the hotel. She was lovely and extremely helpful. Overall, I was extremely happy with the experience and would reach out to them again when traveling to Italy.

Italy Vacation Review: Abruzzo, Puglia, Alberobello, Matera, L'Aquila, Pescara, Castle of Rocca Calascio, Cooking Class, 13 Nights

Overall, our group of nine people had an amazing experience. We visited the regions of Abruzzo and Puglia, and both are stunningly beautiful. We had an awesome "cooking-with-nonna" experience in a real trulli house in Alberobello—highly recommended!!

We stayed in some beautiful B&Bs (historic homes) and the owners/staff and breakfast spread were amazing in all of them. We saw so many beautiful medieval towns (Matera was jaw-dropping!) and had so many great, once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

The only thing I'd recommend is to ensure you have a communication plan with your tour agent and private drivers. For example, when we arrived to our initial B&B in L'Aquila, it was dark/locked and no one was there. Apparently, our arrival time was not communicated to the B&B staff (which was a bit frustrating). Also, you should definitely expect to use a translation app to communicate with your private drivers and to ask drivers to communicate daily plans so everyone is on the same page. Other than a few small hiccups, the trip was great. We'd definitely use this group again.

Italy Travel Review: Turin, Rome, Puglia, Florence, Food Tour, Winery, Museums, History, Art, Culture, 2 Weeks

Zicasso's travel specialist asked for our interests, to which we replied history, art, food, and wine. When queried about accommodations, our preferences were that they have character and be varied. Our expectations were exceeded.

We were two couples who had a spectacular survey trip of Italy. Our agent addressed our request for history by arranging private tours with expert guides. We visited multiple eras: ancient times at the Egyptian Museum in Turin and the Colosseum in Rome; medieval times at the Medici palazzos; Byzantine times with views of the frescoes in Puglia; and modern history during a delightful food tour of Turin that featured historical cafés renowned for their political meetings and plotting.

We indulged in a smorgasbord of art and history, as it is readily available wherever you journey in Italy. The guides and drivers were knowledgeable, pointing out treasures in the palazzos, the Vatican, the public squares, cafés, the cathedrals, and churches. Food tours featured cheese, capicola and truffle tasting. Multiple types of wines and vineyards were sampled, the settings varied and the offerings enjoyed.

Accommodations could not have been better chosen. We enjoyed staying at a converted fortified monastery and a historic 16th-century palace. We appreciated the sunset over Turin from the upper deck of the hotel and enjoyed hidden privacy in Rome in our suites.

During the trip, our guide shepherded this complex trip and promptly addressed any issues that occurred (delayed trains and coordinating tour guides). Unequivocally, each tour was unique and well picked by our agent. We strongly recommend this agency to help you have a fantastic trip to Italy!

Italy Travel Review: Capri, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Alberobello, Lecce, Grottos, History, 16-Day Tour

First off, Zicasso's travel designer was on point! She answered any of our questions before the trip and during the trip.

Let me go hotel by hotel:

Our hotel in Sorrento: The people who worked there were very nice. Our room was next to where the maids had their supplies, and they would loudly chat outside our room while they got their things together for the workday. It's on us to have requested a different room. It was a minor annoyance.

Our hotel in Capri: It was so clean! The owner/manager could not have been kinder, as were all of his staff. I would recommend this to anyone!

Our hotel in Bari: It was clean, but it was too long in gritty, dirty, downtown Bari for four days.

Our hotel in Alberobello: It was so charming, so clean, and a great place!

Our hotel in Lecce: The complimentary earplugs should have been a tip-off. This historical venue is exquisite, but the parties go on till the wee hours of the morning. IT was so loud! It was impossible to sleep! Yet the front desk kept all the lights on for us when we left at 3:30 in the morning; they could not have been kinder!

Italy Travel Review: Capri, Mount Etna, Climbing, Cheese Tasting, Swimming, Nature, Scenery, Local Cuisine, 11-Day Trip

Where do I start? My trip to Italy, put together by Zicasso's travel agency, was absolutely incredible! From climbing Mount Etna and seeing the craters to swimming in the deep blue, crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea on the Island of Capri, I had the time of my life! It's a good thing I have pictures and videos to remind myself that it really happened because every day felt like a dream. I can't thank the travel agency enough for creating special moments that will last in my memories for a lifetime!
