Kyoto – Nijo Castle Opening and a Shunkoin Garden Welcome to Kyoto

Kyoto's atmosphere immediately impresses, taking you away from stress and into a land of tranquility and subtle beauty. Lanes are doused in autumnal colors; reds and deep browns and oranges floating between the trunks of cherry and plum trees. Your Japan vacation begins after your private transfer picks you up at Kyoto International Airport and you check into the Shunkoin Zen Temple Guesthouse, a mystical place with stunning grounds and an effervescent air of authentic Japan. With this tour there's no interrupting the Kyoto spell; this temple guesthouse is the first step in helping you slip into the humble yet exquisite beauty of ancient Kyoto.

Behind ancient walls lies the 14th-century Myonshin-ji complex, a network of elegant walking trails and Rinzai school temples. Everything seems to flow and float, dozens of individual sub-temples and pathways blending into an introduction to Kyoto's unique style. Spend the morning at this vast cascading complex, the highlight being a languid wander through the Shunkoin garden. The serenity of a city will already be taking hold, compelling you to slow your steps and ignore time. From Myonshin-ji you enjoy lunch at Kyoto Station.

Kyoto's beauty and heritage is not merely an ode to the past. The majority of its gardens and temples continue to be functional and meditative places. At the Toji temple antique flea market there's another sense of history imbued with life: the stalls of trinkets engulfed with a vibrant atmosphere. Today's tour continues with a unique fall opening of Nijo Castle. This iconic early 17th-century castle is one of Kyoto's best-loved attractions although parts of the complex are only opened for a few viewings a year. You'll be among the only eyes that admire veiled areas like the Honmaru Palace, your guided tour pulling together a visual and historic narrative of the first Tokugawa shogun. After disposing of an emperor, Toji exemplifies the shogun's desire for prestige, power, and opulence rarely seen in Kyoto. In the evening you enjoy a welcome dinner that's accompanied by an orientation talk on the cuisine of Kyoto.

Detailed Description

Kyoto comes alive in the fall: the temples are speckled with autumnal leaves and the city becomes elevated by a blanket of mystique. This is a serene time of year; a time when palaces and temples host special fall openings and kaleidoscopic dusk colors seemingly continue for hours. Kyoto's gardens blossom with an untamed splendor yet their beauty remains diaphanous and de-emphasized, nothing boastful in their charismatic pathways or veils of seduction. This tour takes you to 13 gardens, mixing eternal favorites with hidden delights from one of the world's great cultural cities. Kyoto is ancient Japan; home to 1600 temples, 400 Shinto shrines, and 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Yet tradition doesn't just live on in the architecture, the heritage is also revealed through everything from food markets to calligraphy, and flute recitals to making sweets.

This 9-day best of Kyoto tour delves deep into the heart of ancient Kyoto, using the city's world-renowned gardens as its focus. Each is absolutely unique, crafted by artists to complement the tranquility and charm of the city. Some flourish with bursts of vibrancy as pathways take you past carp filled ponds and resplendently curved bridges; others are more humble, places of reflection in a city of artistic indulgence. All have an inspiring ingenuity and absolute harmony. Throughout the tour you experience an eclectic collection of Kyoto's gardens, from the works of famed master Kobori Enshu to sublime collections surrounding 12th century temples. Some are well regarded as can’t miss Kyoto highlights. Others provide an off the beaten track showcase of why the gardens garnered so much fame. Accommodation at the Shunkoin Zen Temple Guesthouse further enhances the serenity while organized lectures add fresh layers of knowledge to a city of utopian treasures. This tour is capped at 12 travelers and all transfers are by private vehicle.

Discovered amongst the gardens are Kyoto's exquisite highlights, including unique fall openings at Nijo Castle and Gosho Imperial Palace. You'll explore the city's finest temples, like Sanjusangendo and Kiyomizu-dera, as well as Shinto shrines that radiate spirituality. There are natural delights to discover like Arashiyama bamboo forest as well as guided tours through food markets and traditional townhouse neighborhoods. The detailed itinerary unveils ancient Japan, but like a Tendai Buddhist temple, there's no interruption to the calmness. Stresses melt away and tension escapes from shoulders. While this is a culture and arts based tour, there's a hypnotic feeling of escaping into another world. Two free days are included so you can explore new parts of Kyoto (suggestions are provided) and there are ample stops to enjoy traditional tea overlooking soporific gardens. This tour is the complete taste of Kyoto, both in its aesthetic impressions and the incumbent pull of equanimity.

Japan Travel Review: Kyoto, Hakone, Naoshima, Mt. Fuji, Cherry Blossoms, Shrines, 17-Day Trip
Our trip to Japan was very interesting and different than any other trip we have taken. Traveling by train was at times challenging, but we were able to cover so much of the country by doing so. Our favorite cities were Kyoto and Hakone and should be included in any itinerary. As an outdoor museum, Naoshima Island was beautiful and so different than anything we have seen. The cherry blossoms and gardens were amazingly beautiful in Kyoto and seeing Mt. Fuji near Hakone was magical. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed this trip. Jeff at the travel agency was very easy to work with. The tour was well organized and thorough. We had an 80 page itinerary!!!!!

Review: Luxury Japan Vacation, Kyoto, Tokyo, Hakone, Naoshima Art Island, Lake Ashi Cruise, Sumo Exhibition, Tea Ceremony

We are still talking about what a great trip this travel company and our agent planned for us... The trip missed nothing and we experienced almost every nuance of the Japanese culture and the unique itinerary was nothing short of perfect! Our agent, having lived in Japan, was able to coordinate all the trains and places in sequence - we literally travelled most of Japan in 11 days. This trip itinerary was originally being processed through another travel agent. As we became nervous of the capabililty of the agent I quickly recalled using Zicasso in 2012 for a Spain trip we took to see our daughter who was studying abroad. We had an excellent experience with Zicasso - and with their associated travel agents like this company. Zicasso immediately connected us with with this company and our agent. Within 48 hours she provided an intriging, fun, interesting and very comprehensive itinerary with all the rail and metro passes as well as all excursions in detail. We did provide ideas about things we wanted to do such as attend a Sumo wrestling exhibition and experience an authentic Tea Ceremony - both which we thoroughly enjoyed. We then visited Hakone, and stayed in an authentic Ryokan Japanese Home! Also, we took a cruise on Lake Ashi and the stunning views of Mt. Fuji were spectacular. The food we ate and the ammenities on tours were fantastic. We requested private guides take us on tours of Tokyo and Kyoto. We traveled to Naoshima, The Art Island. The experience was magical. The food was so amazing we have mostly pictures of food! The Japanese culture is so efficient, mannerly, safe. From the places we visited to the guides who made our trip unforgettable, we thank this travel company and Zicasso.

Travel Review: Luxury Family Vacation in Japan, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Awaji Island, Tsukiji Fish Market, Sushi Class

Our trip to Japan was perfect. We were attracted to and curious about learning Japan. We had a limited time of 8 days with our two teenager kids. We wanted many things actually and the time is always not enough. Apart from learning the culture and the country, we were individually interested in culinary world and architecture parts of the culture as well. Our travel agency prepared a program and a unique experience for us. They also thought about our kids and reshaped our tour program based on our requests. We had a great time overall. Everything was so much organised and we just found ourselves travelling from one location to another with not rush, although with our luggages and mostly in public transportation, and diving right into the culture. Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Awaji Island were the places we visited and we are glad that we visited Osaka for instance apart from Kyoto and Tokyo.Awaji Island as a final location was also perfect; as it was a mind switcher and putting everything that we learned on our journey on a holistic picture. We were very much interested in architecture and especially buildings of Tadao Ando. Our tour guides and our program and our walks were shaped based on seeing these buildings through our walks. The small touches such as the traditional candy workshop with kids and staying at a house for our own at Kyoto were perfect things that we wouldn’t think of.

Luxury Japan Travel Review: Tokyo, Ginza, Tsukiji Market, Akihabara, Kyoto, Harajuku, Shibuya, Gion, Arashiyama, Garden Tour
My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful time in Tokyo and Kyoto. The tour guides that were arranged for us were friendly, knowledgeable, spoke very good English, and they took us to see a mix of places that are "must-see" (since it was my wife's first visit to Japan) and other places that we would not have found ourselves. We were also very happy with the restaurants that our tour guides reserved for us and we had some fantastic sushi, teppanyaki, and kaiseki meals. Overall the trip went very smoothly and we enjoyed every minute of it.

Japan Luxury Trip Review: Tokyo, Kyoto, Takayama, Kamakura, Kanazawa, Miyajima, Shinto Temples, Cherry Blossoms, 25-Day Tour

Excellent service, excellent planning, excellent logistics. Truly nice people. Easy to work with.A few of their guides, particularly those in Kyoto, could have been better, but others, particularly in Tokyo were terrific. The guide for Naoshima was very dear to us though a bit challenged at times. Almost all of the hotels and houses we stayed in were great. Kyoto had its moments but was not up to the standards of the rest of our trip.Overall, Japan exceeded our expectations. Of course it didn’t hurt that we hit the cherry blossom season straight on. But in addition, the food, the culture, the politeness, the always on time trains and other rides were something to experience.

We have used Zicasso three times now and each time your tour companies have been first rate.
