We outlined our desires to visit the Basque region of Spain and Portugal's Douro River Valley, with an emphasis on the culture, food, and wine of the two regions. We are in our mid-70s, so we asked that activities be designed at a pace appropriate for our age.
The itinerary designed by Zicasso’s travel team met all of these requests. Our guides/drivers were superbly prepared to explain the culture and culinary milieu throughout our trip. The guides were also universally punctual, open, and affable.
We were especially pleased with the excellent locations of our hotels. In San Sebastian, we had a really excellent pintxos restaurant across the street. The owner was exceptionally helpful in choosing items from the menu, as well as local beers. And in Porto, the hotel staff recommended a small, relaxed restaurant with excellent local cuisine just half a block away.
Our walking food tours of the two cities were excellent, both in the quality of the tastings offered and the pace through the cities. And our wine tours complemented our tastes perfectly. We could not have asked for more.

The Zicasso travel agent did a wonderful job! She immersed us in Spanish and Portuguese culture and heritage. Our trip was amazing! She was always so accommodating and helpful when planning the trip for 22 people! (We all got along well, but think 22 people on a tour like this was too many.) We could always get hold of her when we were in Spain/Portugal (this was only necessary a couple of times). It really did go pretty smoothly! Train travel was a good way to get around and very efficient. Our bus drivers were always on time, hard-working, and very accommodating.
The average age of our group was 70. We loved all the tours, but three events in a day were too much for many of us. We didn't have enough time to browse the cities and shops. We were on the go a lot. Our tour guides were excellent, very educated, knowledgeable, and passionate. There was only one who was hard to understand, but on the second day, we were better at her accent. The flamenco tour guide was so soft spoken we asked her to speak up and that didn't work. The food and wine tours were awesome.
The hotels were all very good, but good and bad on two occasions. In Porto, we were supposed to get water from the hotel for our full-day tour in the Douro Valley, but that didn't happen. We were also supposed to get a box breakfast the morning we left the hotel, but that didn't happen (we were told we would get a refund?).
The comments from 22 people were that it was amazing and we would all highly recommend your company to anyone looking to travel to and learn about Spain and Portugal!
