Detailed Description

Music has always had the power to bring people together, and it has been doing so in Andalusia and Morocco long before the Western pop culture of the 20th century. For many centuries music has been both a means of escape and a vessel of unity, an art form that transcends cultural differences while it enables culture to share experiences. In Andalusia, the music of choice is flamenco. In Morocco, the music has a deep spiritual element, as it originates from holy Islamic tenets. Both styles have evolved over the last millennia, with a myriad of offshoots and new creations that keep the music fresh.

These two unique styles of music are difficult to experience outside Andalusia and Morocco. Of course, you can hear the music anywhere in the world, but it’s only in Morocco and Andalusia that you can truly experience the art forms and what they mean. Only in the home of the music can you feel the emotion and uncover the meaning behind it all while you learn to play the music for yourself.

This unique 17-day itinerary combines time spent in Andalusia with a visit to Morocco. Through the music, you will enjoy unique cultural connections with the people and the places. You’ll experience some of the greatest performers at some of the most legendary venues, from 200-year-old village taverns to spiritual open spaces beneath the stars. You’ll also have the opportunity to get involved, as you learn flamenco dancing and Sufi drumming from the experts. While music provides a focus, the 17 days are also packed with the sights and charms of iconic destinations so that you can get a real feel for the cities’ atmospheres.

Start in the Triana district of Seville, with flamenco dance lessons, exploring the city, and opportunities to watch performances. Then spend time exploring the cradle of flamenco, and follow the three-four time route through the flamenco triangle. It’s a journey full of secrets, including the sublime music venues that form the genesis of deep flamenco.

Then, you’ll fly to Casablanca and enjoy an immediate insight into the spirituality at Moulay Idriss, with local mystics that offer an understanding of the art’s fundamental roots. Over the next few days in Fes and Marrakech, you’ll join the drummers and trance dancers, and each day will focus on a different spiritual music offshoot including Issawa, Jajouka, Gnawa, and Dekka. Finish this handcrafted tour in Essaouira, the musical city that inspired Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and others.

Morocco, Portugal, Spain Anniversary Tour Review: Casablanca, Porto, Lisbon, Sevilla, Malaga, Madrid, Sherry Tasting, Private Guides, Private Drivers, History, Culture, 17-Day Trip

Zicasso’s travel agency helped us plan a 17-day, three-country tour (Morocco, Portugal, and southern Spain). We were able to enjoy all the highlights of each city we visited with a very well-paced schedule!

The travel company's staff were flexible too! Adjusting the initial itinerary for cost and sites to visit was not an issue. We cut out a leg to Barcelona and some private drivers where prudent. We also adding things back in (i.e., a sherry-tasting experience, etc., was accommodated).

During our trip was where this travel company truly excelled. The staff very conscientiously checked in on us as our tour progressed and were proactively reminding us (via a messaging tool) of meeting places and the names of guides for the next day. They stayed on top of our itinerary and continuously inquired if they could do anything else! I enlisted their help when I had trouble checking in to our flight from Casablanca to Porto. At my request, she stepped in and helped successfully check us in! Knowing of my difficulties in checking in to intra-EU flights, she then took the initiative to check us in to our next flight from Lisbon to Sevilla! I even had a scare when I forgot some valuables in the safe in our hotel in Málaga, but she was able to retrieve them and send them to me in Madrid! It was comforting to know we had someone in our corner looking out for us!

We have gone with Zicasso on many trips, but this tour operator met and far exceeded our expectations for this trip! The travel company not only saved me a great disappointment for my forgetfulness, but provided very informative private guides, courteous drivers, and exceptional personal service throughout our itinerary! This was our 43rd-anniversary trip and they provided us with wonderful memories that will last us a lifetime!

Spain, Morocco Trip Review: Barcelona, Andalucia, Chefchaouen, Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Marrakech, Atlas Mountains, Architecture, Art, Riads, 2 Weeks

Flawless doesn't begin to describe how incredible and meticulous the planning and taste that went into designing our Spain and Morocco trip. I reached out to Zicasso’s travel specialist far in advance, describing a dream vacation for my husband and me that included a near-impossible amount of locations to cover through both countries in only two weeks. We had tried coming up with an itinerary with another planner prior to meeting the travel specialist, but it did not work out. When we shared our vision with the travel specialist, he materialized it on paper in a way that made sense and even made adjustments that fit within our budget. We got to see every location with enough time to savor each.

The order of travel from Barcelona to Andalucía to Morocco was an intricate weave that told a story of cross-cultural exchange. We started off with Gaudí architecture and the Sagrada Família, sunsets at the Puente Nuevo, Alhambra, and Córdoba, marveled at the grandeur of the mosque cathedral, savored seafood paella and Picasso art in Málaga. We finished off road-tripping in Morocco, starting from the blue city of Chefchaouhen, continuing our journey through Casablanca, Rabat, Fes, Marrakech, and the Atlas Mountains. It was nothing short of magical.

We will never forget the beauty of the sun rising above the Atlas Mountains, private candlelit dinners on our private terrace in the riads, the colors of the souks, and the hospitality of our Moroccan hosts. Each riad was carefully selected and far exceeded our expectations. And of course, our driver in Morocco was an absolute delight and went above and beyond. Besides providing transportation, he acted as a friend who showed us the ins and outs, helping us see Morocco in a way that we would not have if we went in a large group or had chosen to come alone. Overall, my husband and I cannot recommend our travel specialist enough.

Spain, Greece Vacation Review: Seville, Barcelona, Athens, Santorini, River Tour, 17 Nights

Overall, we had a wonderful trip. All of the locations were great and met our expectations. A few of our hotel accommodations could have been a little bit better, but overall, they met our needs. The tours and our guides were wonderful, very knowledgeable, and friendly.

The river ride in Seville, Spain, was the only activity that wasn't very good, as it seemed more like a boat ride versus a tour. Also, the communications with the travel company in Greece and Spain were excellent. They provided all the information we needed via text and WhatsApp.

We were very pleased with Zicasso’s travel specialist. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and always available to answer our questions.
