Namibia Walking Safari: Desert Rhino & Elephants

What to expect on this itinerary
This journey is a unique adventure that has, at its heart, a focus on the truly remote and the pristine. It also offers an opportunity to accompany a group of conservationists on a remarkable effort to raise awareness for, and protect, some of the world’s greatest creatures. The Save the Rhino Team will take you on an unforgettable foray into the Namibian wilderness, teaching you invaluable tracking and bush skills and demonstrating the precarious nature of the existing populations of rhinos and elephants in this area. In addition to this experience, you will explore areas of Namibia that are inaccessible by vehicle and thus reserved for the privileged few to witness on foot while supported by a camel train. This trip is about the wildlife and people of Namibia, and the unbreakable bonds that you will undoubtedly forge with both.

Palmwag - Welcome to Namibia
Welcome to Namibia, where a spectacular, sprawling wilderness awaits you. This is the land of rolling desert dunes, undulating into the distance as far as the eye can see. This is the land of promising gems with birdlife and wildlife that will astonish you; the extraordinary juxtaposition of the harsh and the inhospitable with the luscious and the living in this beautiful country will take your breath away. You will be experiencing this intriguing landscape on foot, by vehicle and, if you wish, from the air. Firstly, your journey brings you to the stunning Palmwag area, where you meet your guide for the journey that awaits you. Surrounded on all sides by palm trees, the lodge itself is set in an unexpected Eden here in the arid and sparse desert, and the waterhole draws visitors, both human and animal, into its lush and green embrace.
Said to be one of the most likely places to spot predators outside of Etosha National Park, the lodge’s location near to the Uniab River heightens the chance of animal visitors and you may be lucky enough to see desert rhino, elephants, mountain zebra and even leopard, cheetah or lion. The charming little thatched chalets of the lodge, complete with canopy beds, as well as the cool and inviting swimming pool will ensure pampered luxury when you really need to kick off your shoes and relax. The exciting combination of morning and evening game drives and bush walks will introduce you to a truly wild and magical world that will continue to unfold over the next few days of your Namibian adventure. This will be your first game-viewing experience out in the bush, and a taste of what is to come. Starting tomorrow, you will be exploring mostly on foot, and immersing yourself fully into the wilds of Namibia.

Zicasso’s tour company did an outstanding job planning our three-week vacation and safari through South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Our agent patiently worked with us through a number of iterations.
The selected lodges and hotels were immaculate. The service at each lodge was second to none. The activity schedules were planned accurately. Our guides, rangers, pilots, and many others involved in our activities were knowledgeable, extremely friendly, and had a high degree of experience. We always felt safe and well taken care of.
While our planned schedule was tight, we never felt pressured or stressed by the local tour guides. Our agent’s planning allowed us to maximize our experience. For instance, making sure we get to Inyati in time for the afternoon game drive on the day of arrival. She was always on top, checking in multiple times and making sure we got the best service possible.
We can strongly recommend our travel company, specifically our agent, and thank them for making this trip unforgettable.

I had the absolute best time! Everything went so smoothly and I could not have asked for a nicer trip. I've traveled a lot, using Zicasso many times, and this trip, by far, shoots to the top of the list.

We worked with Zicasso's travel partner to plan a trip around a seven-night sail in the Seychelles. After sailing, we followed the itinerary we put together with our agent to Namibia and Botswana. We had a glitch in Namibia with a scenic flight of the Skeleton Coast that did not go as planned. I made contact with our agent and over a couple of days, he forged a solution that fixed the oversight by one of his vendors.
We enjoyed the desert lodge very much. It was a first-class and beyond operation. We also really enjoyed Sossusvlei. We were not happy with our shared guided rides as we were with parents and their 11-year-old only child who ran their lives. It affected us on our tour of Sossusvlei in that we were left alone without a guide for three hours to hike Deadvlei while they unsuccessfully attempted to hike Big Daddy. The longest anyone takes to do that hike is an hour and three quarters. They only made it halfway and were gone for three hours.
We were not thrilled with the two-hour, very rugged ride from and back to the airstrip to the camp, but we did enjoy the camp very much. In hindsight, if we had known the ride would be dissatisfying, we would have likely opted for a different accommodation. This said, the private rides in the Hoanib Valley were unique and very satisfying.
We loved that as much as both of our camps in Botswana, which were in the Okavango Delta and in quite different environments. The camp was wonderful. The highlight of our trip came at our last camp in Botswana. We really enjoyed this area of the Delta in that it had a lot of water. This created a very unique guided driving experience. The safari rides were arguably the best we’ve ever done as we witnessed three warthog kills by lions. We almost witnessed a fourth, of a lechwe by a hyena.
What made this camp a cut above the rest was the food and overall culinary approach of the executive chef. He was at the top of his game. This camp also offered surprise after surprise to make us feel special – lunch in the field, a private dinner in our room, bubble bath, etc.
Our travel agent put together an incredible itinerary and trip. He too was at the top of his game!
