New Zealand Luxury Vacation Review: Queenstown, Wellington, Picton, Greymouth, Christchurch, 16-Day Vacation

The trip was well planned. The response from Zicasso’s travel agency was prompt and helpful while planning and during the trip.

Our driver/guide was awesome; very knowledgeable in all aspects of travel and photography, well mannered and very helpful.

The ferry from Wellington to Picton was in awful condition. Most of the toilets did not work and the scenery was nowhere near as profound as described by the agency.

The three nights in Queenstown for senior citizens like us (65+) was too long if you are not into bungee jumping, rafting, kayaking, etc. Instead, it would have been nice to spend a day or two in a place like Wanaka, or one night in Te Anau near Milford Sound.

While the train trip from Greymouth to Christchurch was great and scenic, the agency should have booked the seats on the left side (facing the front of the train) as most of the nice views were on that side.

The hotel in Christchurch was way below the four- to five-star accommodation requested by us.

Overall, however, we had a great trip!

New Zealand Luxury Travel Review: Auckland, Queenstown, Rotorua, Mount Cook, Milford Sound

Having explained to the travel agency that we wanted them to arrange a package based on our itinerary, not theirs, they eventually came up with an excellent tour plan at around half the price of the other competing company for almost the same itinerary, so that was a big positive.

Unfortunately, our trip was then delayed for three years by the Covid pandemic.

Our trip was replanned for 2023, but through no fault of the company, some amendments were necessary due to hotels and excursions being fully booked or just not available as New Zealand opened up to tourists once more. This seems to have been at least in part the reason for the poor execution of our itinerary which eventually caused us to lose all confidence in the company.

We first noticed that the written amended itinerary supplied by the company had errors such as transfers being shown from hotels booked on the original 2020 itinerary instead of from the replacement hotel booked for the 2023 tour. We queried this and were given the assurance that everything including transfers had been updated as necessary.

Our arrival and stay in Auckland was very satisfactory, but in Rotorua, our second stop, our hotel had been changed.

On our day of departure to Rotorua airport (for our flight to Wellington) our taxi to the airport failed to arrive at the hotel. After some minutes we managed to get through to the taxi company on the phone, to be told the taxi had gone to the original hotel. Our itinerary had not been amended. Thanks to our own efforts and the kind cooperation of the local taxi firm, they got us to the airport but check in had closed. Luckily, a member of the airport staff noticed our arrival and rushed our luggage through and we boarded the plane. Had this been three or four minutes later or in a larger airport we almost certainly would have missed our flight with inevitable disruption to our itinerary.

I called the office regarding this error and I was assured that they would recheck our transfer arrangements.

Later in our tour we stayed in Christchurch. The day before we were due to leave for Queenstown via Mt Cook we received a message from the agency that the transfer to Queenstown would not pick us up from our hotel and we would have to find our own way to another hotel early in the morning to meet the transfer bus. The distance to the other hotel was not far but too far for my wife to walk with our luggage, so we took a taxi. On arrival at the other hotel nobody else was waiting. Eventually when the pick up time had passed the reception staff kindly phoned our hotel and were told the bus had in fact gone to our own hotel. By the time the bus had been diverted to the second hotel the transfer journey to Queenstown had been delayed by over 30 minutes causing unnecessary inconvenience not just to us but to all the other people on the bus and shortening the tight schedule of the morning´s tour for everyone.

Following this incident, we took it upon ourselves to contact each transfer company in turn to confirm the arrangements.

Luxury New Zealand Vacation Review: Queenstown, Wanaka, Waiheke Island, Kerikeri, Auckland, Picton, Franz Josef, Golf, Wine Tour
Shelley was very good at listening to our desires and bringing it all to life! There were things that could have been done to ensure our trip went more smoothly and for that reason I am not giving a 5 star. There were bumps in the road and some advice that perhaps should have been given as it was our first time to NZ. For example, it seems that the driving times given to us were for local people. All the drives took at least 30% to 40% longer than we expected. There was also a lot of construction on the road, we may not have driven as much had we realized how difficult and stressful some of the driving would be. We found ourselves getting in late to Wellington at 5/6pm and couldn't obtain a dinner reservation. We ended ordering pizza on uber eats because the idea of getting back into the car was daunting. Golfing and then driving 5 hours was too much!! We also drove out of our way to go Wairakei instead of Rotorua just to find out they were closed for repairs for 3 weeks. I feel our tour company should have been aware of that. We had issues with our rental car not having our information which caused us to miss out on most of our wine tour in Blenheim. Things were scheduled a bit tight and I wish she would have advised us of that. I would not recommend the hotel in Wellington. They have bathrooms with glass doors and a curtain, really bizarre. Parking garage is far away.

New Zealand Vacation Review: Mount Cook Village, Southern Alps, Queenstown, Wanaka, 5 Nights

We had an escorted tour to New Zealand with a big tour company, but wanted to add on a few days at the end without the tour company. So I contacted Zicasso, who we have used for African safaris. They set us up with our trip planners. From half a world away, I could have booked the three hotels and rental car myself, but I wanted the expertise and back-up of somebody right there in New Zealand in case of problems. And I am glad we did. Our agent was always available by phone or email to answer questions. We picked up the rental car at Queenstown airport, then had two nights at Mount Cook Village, with spectacular vistas of the Southern Alps, then two nights at Wānaka, another of the scenic spots of the South Island. We met our agent at the tour office on our way out of town. Then, the last night was in Queenstown.

The trouble started the next afternoon while waiting for our flight home from Queenstown airport. All flights were canceled that afternoon due to heavy wind shear. They booked us for the next day. Hundreds of people were scrambling to get hotel rooms, like we were. We just could not find anything on our own and were thinking we would have to sleep in the bushes, since the airport closed at night. But then I called our agent and, within a few minutes, she had us booked in one of the last available rooms in Queenstown. This is what I meant by “back-up in case of problems.” I am very glad we went with Zicasso’s tour company and will use them if we go back to New Zealand.

New Zealand Honeymoon Travel Review: Auckland, Queenstown, Wellington, Hobbiton, Milford Sound, Cruise, Helicopter Ride
My wife and I chose this travel agency to plan our honeymoon trip.  We could not be any happier with the incredible adventure and service they provided.  Shelley was phenomenal!!!  We worked with her for about a year leading up to our magical getaway. We love the Lord of the Rings and our wedding theme was even inspired by the stories.  So our honeymoon was centered around the unique settings and filming of the movies.  There aren't words to describe how wonderful Shelley was planning a unique exploration of the greatest parts of New Zealand to enhance the LOTR experience. We started in Auckland with a well-planned first day of accommodating to the time zone after leaving the US.  We experienced the "City of Sails" by sailboat (our first cruise). We traveled to the land of Hobbits to enjoy an incredible feast at the Green Dragon that Shelley planned our trip to ensure we would make the special event.  At the time, this had just re-started as an option and could not have been more special.  It alone would have been worth the trip.  We explored the glowworms of Waitomo, the beauty of "Mt. Doom", the amazing Weta workshop, and filming locations on the North Island.  So many beautiful memories and surprises there aren't enough words to describe it.  And then we ferried across to the South Island!!  The accommodations were perfect for our requests and budget.  We traveled by train to celebrate a milestone birthday along the Pacific Coast. The last half of the trip increased in splendor, special moments and phenomenal landscapes.  The filming location of Rohan (OMG!!), Mt. Cook, the Milford Sound and even a helicopter flight to the glaciers outside Queenstown concluded by an afternoon guided tour of some of the "Remarkable" places around the city.  And speaking of guides, we had some of the best people to share and lead our adventures.  The people of New Zealand we met rank as some of the most sincere and pleasant we've ever met.  True ambassadors of the magical nation.  This trip will forever be one of the most enjoyable experiences of our lives.  It would not have been possible without Shelley and the travel agency.  Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the work done on our behalf before and during our honeymoon.  We could not have asked for a better trip!!

New Zealand Honeymoon Trip Review: Mount Cook, Christchurch, Hiking, Kayaking, Local Cuisine

If we could give our Zicasso travel partner, specifically our amazing tour specialist, a rating of 10, we would do so with zero hesitation. Everything from the initial consultation with her through the planning process and the trip itself was absolutely flawless. This was the most incredible trip of our life!

This was our honeymoon (delayed a couple of years because of Covid). Our agent did things for us that were so far above our expectations. For example, when we arrived on our first day in Christchurch, there was a handwritten note and a bottle of champagne. Things only got better from there.

At a couple of the hotels on the South Island, we were given complimentary room upgrades, as well as "Happy Honeymoon" drink vouchers. The most stunning room upgrade we received was from the standard superior room we had booked to a one-bedroom suite on the top floor of the hotel directly overlooking the lake, the town, and the gondola.

Some of the other outstanding planning and execution details that made our trip so smooth and enjoyable included the itinerary app with complete information, suggestions, and directions. We always knew exactly where we were going and what we were doing each day. The private transfers were always early and everything about our trip was booked with 100% accuracy.

There was nothing about it that was within our travel agent's control that was even the slightest disappointment. On the contrary, everything she did for us exceeded our very lofty expectations. We would recommend our tour operator to anyone who is planning a trip to New Zealand.
