Day 1

Christchurch – Open Your Eyes to the Beauty of the South Island

Land in Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island of New Zealand, and open your eyes to the stunning scenery around you. The quite rush of the Avon River flows through the city center surrounded by the warm colors of Victorian architecture and the botanic gardens, lush avenues full of leaves and spectacular gardens. Whether floating down the river, strolling through the fabulous gardens, or wandering the pleasant streets of the city, the sweet smell of roses winds through Christchurch and is sure to open your eyes to the beauty of the South Island.

Known as the Gateway to Antarctica, learn more about the city’s connection to the seventh continent at the International Antarctic Centre. Enjoy the incredible simulation of the coldest, driest, and windiest place on earth. Explore the icy way of life from glaciers to penguins. The quiet chirps of little blue penguins come from their cold display where you can watch them fly through the water, glide through the clear imitation sea, search for fish, and nest onshore. You can travel through the ice and frozen water on an all-terrain, amphibious Hagglund. The simulation drives along the tundra offering you the incredible vistas of the open space, the large glaciers that plunge into the sea, and the whales that swim off the coast. And slide along the arctic floor in the “'Antarctica' Snow and Ice experience.”

Detailed Description

Open your eyes. Sometimes it’s that simple. On this 8-day tour of New Zealand you will see the stunning beauty that lies along the South Islands's coast and sits in the island’s center. Whether in the pristine snow of winter or the shining grass of summer, New Zealand is incredibly vibrant and welcoming. From one coast to another, the land is filled with magic, glaciers, and sounds, as well as Maori and European settlements. It is all here, waiting and ready, all you have to do is open your eyes.

Land in Christchurch and experience the “Garden City.” The Avon River flows softly through the city center. The gentle colors of the buildings offer warmth in the winter and a cooling sensation in the summer. Keep your eyes peeled for the incredible vista of Mt Cook on your way to Dunedin. The coast lines the city’s edge and the history of Maori tribes and the gold rush fill the city’s streets. Whether plunging into the cold seawater or walking along the city’s streets, soak in the city’s ease and beauty.

Make your way to Queenstown with the adventures and luxuries visible at all times. Hike in the lush forests, boat in the opulent lake or, for those daring enough, hang glide down from Bob’s Peak. Queenstown will keep your eyes wide open and the panoramas continuous. Visiting Milford Sound will keep you from wanting to blink. The opal water, the surrounding mountains, and the vibrant wildlife will help you from closing your eyes for one moment. Enjoy the soothing view of Franz Josef Glacier and the adjacent, quaint town. The glacier glows in the sunlight and almost dances until you make your way back to Christchurch along the TranzAlpine railway. No matter how long you spend in New Zealand the hardest part is closing your eyes worrying you might miss something, so why close your eyes at all?

Travel Review: Australia, New Zealand, & Fiji, Sydney, Milford Sound, Franz Josef Glacier, Local Culture, Cuisines & Traditions

"A superb, luxury trip to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji perfectly arranged!!!" Our travel specialist makes booking a holiday a charm. and stress -free. Destinations/transfers/hotels all completed without a hitch. When a question has arisen -very responsive and even during our trip, he made sure all are OK. Hotels were 5 stars and situated centrally. The hotels were within walking distance to city center, restaurants and local landmarks. Transfers were precise & took the worry out of inward & outward airport/hotels transport. All tours and destinations were top notch. We enjoyed the small group tours and the local guides were knowledgeable, punctual and was considerate of our varied interests. Renting a car in Queenstown to Franz Joseph was an excellent suggestion – the landscapes changes were breathtaking.

New Zealand Tour: Queenstown, Franz Josef Glacier, Punakaiki, Kaiteriteri, Christchurch, Outdoor Adventures, Intercity Coach

My travel agent was absolutely brilliant. She mapped out a wonderful trip covering many adventure activities in Queenstown before heading over to Franz Josef, Punakaili, Neslson/Kieteriteri, and then Christchurch.  Each leg of my trip was equally enjoyable.  My agent was very in tune to what I wanted to accomplish, flexible in last minute changes, and friendly as she not only provided needed details we chatted about various topics. I have and will continue to recommend this travel company to anyone I catch wind of wanting to visit New Zealand or Australia.

Luxury New Zealand Family Vacation Review: Auckland, Queenstown, Waitomo Caves Rafting, Franz Josef & Fox Glaciers, Milford Sound

We had a fantastic 12 day family trip in New Zealand!  Our agent from this New Zealand travel company put together a great itinerary that allowed our family of five to travel from Auckland to Queenstown with much ease.  The hotel accommodations perfectly fit our need with five adults, especially the Rainforest Retreat in Franz Josef.  The Tree House was wonderfully large for our days in Franz Josef and having a washer and dryer in the house was perfect for our mid-trip clothing needs.  Wanting a physically active trip, we loved the Blackwater Rafting in the Waitomo Caves, the day long Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike, hiking at the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks, Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, and the Dart River jet boats in Queenstown.  Traveling was a breeze with all the details of our trip put in place from the flights from multiple U.S cities, car rentals, hotel reservations, and the pick ups and drop offs at the hotels for some of tours we chose.  It was a great experience and we would highly recommend this company for your travel needs!

Review: Luxury Family Trip to New Zealand & Australia, Queenstown, Sydney, Auckland, Milford Sound, Great Barrier Reef Snorkeling

Our travel agent was excellent. We booked a 23 day trip during the Christmas and New Years holidays only a few short months before we were leaving so the logistics were difficult to say the least.   Our travel company did a wonderful job in planning dozens of activities throughout Australia and New Zealand and it was all very well organized.  We like adventure and we had some of the best adventures ever thanks to the recommendations of our travel agent.  A dream trip that exceeded our expectations.    Thanks so much!

Sydney was great!  The Harbor Bridge Climb was so much fun as well as the tour of the opera house.

Our Uluru resort was the jewel of the trip.  Very unexpectedly spectacular.  The accommodations were unbelievable – wonderful spot and tremendous views.  We enjoyed all the activities.  A grand slam home run.  The amount of time there was perfect and we were ready to move on when our time was up.   The kids skydived in Uluru and loved it.  Highly recommend it as it only took 45 minutes from start to finish and they land right next to the resort, so super convenient.

Port Douglas was fun.  The private boat trip to Barrier Reef was awesome and we highly recommend.  The snorkeling was fun.   The spear fishing was also an adventure.

Hamilton Island was great.  The Whitsundays were spectacular and Whitehaven beach was a treat.   The hotel was a bit large and busy for our taste, but we understand that we didn’t have a lot of options given we booked so close to the trip.  The Beach Club Christmas brunch was spectacular!!  What a view!!  The Koala visit was a huge hit with all.  We hiked on many of the trails and really enjoyed Hamilton Island.

New Zealand was super fun as well.  We loved the Franz Josef heli hike – definitely a highlight of the tour and we all thought worth the travel time to get there.  The resort was very nice. We explored on our own and walked to the mining tunnel and hiked through it and saw glow worms.

Queenstown was also so much fun.  Wine tasting was a wonderful afternoon.  Kids Bunge jumped off the bridge near Arrow Town and had a blast.  Arrow Town is also a cute spot to have lunch.  The Shotover boat ride was so much fun.  The flight to Milford Sound and cruise was spectacular.

We had pouring rain in Auckland, but still got out.  Th hotel was nice and in a great location to get around.  It would have been nice to have a pool, which we had not really considered until in rained for 3 days!

Luxury Fiji & New Zealand Tour Review:Auckland, Waitomo Caves, Hobbiton, Rotorua, Christchurch, Trans Alpine Railway, Snorkeling
Overall, we were happy with the itinerary and the hotel choices (details about each location below). All the transitions were smooth and hassle free. Fiji Sofitel was a great choice for us. The accommodations were clean, comfortable, and with views. The staff were all super friendly and approachable. There was even free laundry facilities. The lounge area and pool were superb. We loved the complimentary breakfast (lots of fresh fruit and pastries). Dinners at the buffet were OK, good food and service, but nothing special. We also appreciated how close Sofitel was to the port so we could go there for dinner as well. We did take a snorkeling day trip with a travel company partner in Fiji used by this travel company, which was fun. Fortunately the weather was good that day. The main downside of Sofitel (and all of the nearby hotels) is that the beach and water are not really good (thank goodness Sofitel had a nice pool area). If we were to go back to Fiji, we would probably want to explore more of the remote islands. Auckland Scenic Hotels was again a great choice for us. The central location was great, and the room was clean and comfortable. We thought that having both the bus tour and the cruise was maybe too much guided touring of the city. Jeff enjoyed the bus tour because it gave us a chance to get oriented and check out some of the different areas which we may not have had a chance to get to otherwise. We probably could have done without the Harbor Cruise, though. Both the Waitomo caves and Hobbiton tours were better than we expected. However it was a very long day on the bus with many transfers. Too bad the sites are so far away in New Zealand! Rotorua Ibis Rotorua was again a good choice for us. Clean and comfortable, with a nice location. One of the things we really enjoyed was the walk along the lake. We were pleasantly surprised to come across geothermal features right along the hike. We enjoyed the morning at Te Puia. We probably could have spent more of the morning there (and maybe skipped the Agrodome and/or Rainbow Springs). Rainbow Springs looks like a great place to take families, but we could have probably done without. The Mitai experience overall was enjoyable but did not feel authentic, and honestly the food was not good. I'm not sure if any of the other Hangi dinner experiences are any different, but I expected more (especially given the cost!) Christchurch Of all the places we stayed, we thought the Cotswold was the worst experience. Although it looks cute from the outside, the rooms are kind of frumpy and the walls are thin. The staff in the lobby were not particularly friendly or helpful, and the location was not ideal (a bit of a walk to Merivale and far from downtown Christchurch). The TranzAlpine trip was wonderful! Probably not something we would have known to book for ourselves - so it was a treat. The weather cooperated! Franz Josef Punga Grove was a great place with very friendly staff and clean/comfortable rooms. We enjoyed doing hikes around the area. Although we weren't able to go with the guided tour, we went on several of the self-guided hikes, which were nice. Queenstown The Copthorne has a nice lobby, nice rooms, and gorgeous views. Strangely, the hallways were very dingy looking. The tour with the travel company partner in New Zealand used by these travel specialists to Milford sound was great (and seemed like to best tour company). Our driver was Maori, and told us about the legends in both Mauri and English! Although this was also a long bus day, the tour company's bus was more comfortable than other buses we had been on. The Milford Sound experience was also very nice. In general - as I mentioned earlier, all the transfers and pick-ups went very smoothly. We're were a little surprised that our airline seats were not pre-assigned, and we didn't have the ability to pick out the seats for some of the airlines. Is this typical for the airlines (e.g. Air Pacific)?

Travel Review: Birthday Trip to New Zealand & Australia, Queenstown, Christchurch, Uluru, Franz Josef Glacier, Hiking, Camel Tour

TRIP OF A LIFETIME!

We just returned from the most amazing trip we have ever taken!  This trip was a present to me from my husband for my 70th birthday.  We have always wanted to visit Australia and New Zealand, and decided to spend 2 weeks touring each country.

We chose this travel agency based on their excellent reviews, and the fact that our travel specialist responded so promptly, professionally, and took the time to reach out to us personally to discuss our interests and answer our questions.  She responded promptly to our every communication.  This agent actually lives in Perth, and was able to provide insight and personal knowledge of every aspect of our journey.

We didn't have any specific requirements.  We wanted first-rate accommodations, a variety of activities and small group tours.  Our travel specialist planned the perfect combination of locations and activities, with "rest days" between each.  We traveled by plane, small tour bus, ferry, jetboat, car, train, camel, and some lovely hikes.   We experienced the beautiful metropolitan cities, and the gorgeous countryside.  Each hotel was first-class and perfectly located for easy access to everything.

Every aspect of the trip was perfectly planned and executed.  All airport-hotel-tour transfers were included.  All we had to do was show up.

NOTE:  One more thing I need to mention. We LEFT OUR PASSPORTS AND MONEY at the hotel in Queenstown when we checked out to drive to the lodge in the Franz Joseph Glacier area.  Upon our arrival at the lodge, they notified us that the hotel and our travel specialist had been attempting to contact us all day (our cell phone reception was non-existent that day in the mountains).  The hotel promptly arranged for DELIVERY of our property to our next stop in Christchurch.  Such amazing service and follow through!!!!
