Outdoor Tour of New Zealand: Best of the North Island in 2 Weeks

What to expect on this itinerary
Kayaking to Whenuakura and crossing Tongariro will be just two of the experiential highlights on this adventurous 14-day excursion of New Zealand’s outdoors. New Zealand’s North Island is the great outdoors: it is a magnificent land of rugged mountains, rolling coastline, bucolic pastures, and volcanic enchantment. From digging a jacuzzi in the sand to Maori encounters and sailing through the Pacific with dolphins, these two weeks will showcase the very best of the North Island’s wild side.

Auckland – Introduction to the Capital
Auckland’s city charm is created by quirky little neighborhoods, and the city center is not overly impressive, especially if you are more of an outdoor person. The small neighborhoods can feel like little villages with lovely cafes, boutiques, bars, and artistic architecture, and after a private airport transfer, this day will be at your leisure. Auckland’s neighborhoods are relaxing and comfortable places to get over your jet lag and become accustomed to the New Zealand pace of life. You can also take a stroll around the harbor to check out some pop-up bars and watch all the boats.

Detailed Description
New Zealand has helped redefine notions of an outdoor vacation. This is a country where almost the entire experience is outdoors, and for those who crave outdoor adventure, there is nowhere better to indulge in a two-week getaway than New Zealand. While the South Island offers the most dramatic landscapes, including famous fjords and glaciers, the North Island has better weather and a wider diversity of accessible activities. You can do something new every day and not have to spend much time traveling between destinations. With two weeks, you can discover most of the nature and outdoor adventure that the island has to offer.
Handcrafted with private activities and off-the-beaten-track locations, this two-week tour will celebrate much of the best of the North Island. Five different day hikes have been included, and you will explore the full range of landscapes from Pacific beaches to volcanic mountains that tower above the interior. Auckland is the island’s gateway city, and you will spend two nights relaxing after the flight with a whale and dolphin safari that will fill up your first full day in New Zealand. Waiheke Island is warm and tropical, where hiking trails connect vineyards and beaches. It is a laid-back destination that will help you unwind before the outdoor adventures really start.
You will travel to Thames on day five, which is where you will search for Karekare Falls, wander Nikau glowworm caves, and hike the magnificent Pinnacle Rock formations. The Coromandel Peninsula will follow, which is a destination that is soporific at heart but adventurous in spirit. You can hike a stunning coastline, relax on secluded beaches, paddle around isolated rock figures, and build your own jacuzzi on a unique, hot water beach. By staying on the coast, you will hike to Cathedral Cove on day nine before kayaking to Whenuakura, which is a Maori island that is located on an island’s lagoon waters. Private guides will lead all of your activities, so you can tailor the itinerary each day. Perhaps, you will want to extend a hike or add another journey along the water.
From Whangamata, you will travel inland and spend your final five days exploring the North Island’s volcanic interior. You will stop to see Hobbiton before hiking Mount Maunganui and lazing away in some Rotorua hot springs. Mountain biking and kayaking are two options that are also available on a customizable day of activities that will be followed by a Maori cultural experience. Geothermal wonder will provide a highlight in Rotorua on the road to Lake Taupo, which will be your final overnight destination. Here, you will hike to Rainbow Mountain as an introduction to the iconic Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This legendary, single-day crossing will provide you with a fitting finale for your two weeks in New Zealand.

The itinerary was awesome! We had a few snafus with hotel reservations, but they were quickly resolved. The tours were perfect and all private, with excellent guides. The pace made good use of the time we had and maximized seeing the most locations in our time frame. The hotels were beautiful (especially the one in Queenstown, WOW!) and the rooms were perfect for our needs (kitchens and laundry). It was so great having everything pre-booked and guided, as it allowed us to relax and enjoy the trip and not worry about logistics. It was a trip of a lifetime.
I would highly recommend this Zicasso travel agency! When traveling so far away, it made such a difference to have everything coordinated by a professional. I have had many people ask how we managed to do so much with the time we had. Now, I don't think I can travel any other way.

This was a great trip. We enjoyed many of the activities, especially the Māori experiences, the garden tours, the glowworm cave, the first wine tour on Waiheke Island, the kiwi hatchery, and Arthur’s Pass. The guides were excellent. All were courteous, prompt, and knowledgeable, and showed a high degree of enthusiasm. The reasons we give this travel company four instead of five stars is due to the poor hotel room we had in Queenstown, the slow response from the company concerning the hotel room, and the fact that they gave us no help in choosing restaurants or making reservations. One change I would have made in the itinerary would be to have just one wine-tasting day instead of two. The other activities were wonderful… fine choices.

We went to the North and South islands of New Zealand for our trip, and I felt like Zicasso’s travel specialist planned it perfectly for us. We gave him our dates, budget, and activities we were interested in, and his initial pitch was spot-on. He was very accommodating when it came to changes as well. We ended up adding another day to take in some of the Māori culture and also ended up shifting our dates from October to November, which he easily handled for us.
Our travel specialist was great and patient about answering any questions we had, which weren't very many. I'd never gotten such a complete package of information from a travel agent! They also utilize an app, so all of the information we needed was contained there. I had one question during the trip that I needed answered that day, and I called the local number I was given. They answered immediately and were so friendly and kind. We really couldn't have asked for a better trip and a better supporting team behind us.

Zicasso’s trip planner did an excellent job. Communication and the quality of the experiences were everything we'd expected and more, especially in New Zealand. The accommodations were first rate; the highlight was the lodge in Queenstown. The guides and drivers were professional and knowledgeable, especially those in Queenstown and Auckland. We loved the dedicated website for reference, as well as the detailed booklet and maps for both countries.
For future itineraries, I would add another day in Queenstown and a full day in Christchurch. If days were limited, I would recommend one less day in Auckland and/or skipping the drive/train from Franz Josef.
The only complication was the day we spent 10 hours going to and coming from Milford Sound. I recommend doing Milford Sound by plane/helicopter from Queenstown, which would also permit seeing the glaciers/southern alps from the air. The only things we missed were the zoo in Auckland and the Blue Mountain day tour in Sydney. Next trip!

Zicasso’s travel agent did an excellent job planning this trip. We loved New Zealand.
If we were to do it over, we would probably reduce the hours on buses and vans by perhaps flying, for example, from Christchurch to Queenstown.
We loved our Māori cultural evening and the Redwoods evening light show in Rotorua.
We wondered why we were collected at 8am and driven to the airport in Rotorua, where we ended up spending over six hours at the airport, leaving little time to spend in Christchurch that day. It did not make any sense to us.
We loved Queenstown and the accommodation at our hotel in Queenstown. Queenstown was the highlight of our trip. Unfortunately, and beyond anyone's control, our kayaking trip was cut short due to windy weather and we were unable to do the glacier heli-hike in Franz Josef, also due to weather conditions, leaving us with a lot of time in a much less desirable town and our worst accommodation for nearly two days.
The rail adventure was superb.

We just got back from a most enjoyable trip to New Zealand, planned by Zicasso's travel agent and her company. She understood what we were trying to cover during this trip and planned the excursions/activities, hotels, and transportation very well.
We started in Queensland and, after Milford Sound, worked our way north through Mount Cook, Christchurch, Rotorua, and Auckland. The company planned each day, with the travel times and activities woven well with appropriate meal times and rest breaks. The guides and pick-ups at each location were prompt and well-informed, and we always knew what to expect at each step of our trip.
We had a couple of issues, one with a day trip for wine tasting and another with the quality of one of the hotels, but our agent responded quickly with a solution.
It was a memorable trip; a fun, enjoyable, and educational introduction to New Zealand, and we would heartily recommend them to anyone planning a trip to New Zealand.
