Madeira – Wilderness and Charm on a Remote Volcanic Island

Dazzling cliffs set the scene on Madeira for a rugged and lush backdrop to the waves of the Atlantic Ocean. The cliffs twist and turn around the island and bring a feeling of wilderness that stretches across the interior of the island. From these cliffs, you can watch pods of dolphins rising in unison as they surf the waves. Picturesque fishing villages also hide down below, their scents of coffee and seafood carried on a breeze. Farming hamlets dot the interior hills, serene, and picture-perfect as they mark the panorama. Madeira is a perfect place for you quickly succumb to nature and overcome any travel fatigue.

You will be greeted at the airport and transferred to a timeless hotel that will overlook the ocean. Your hotel has been entertaining luminaries for over a century and is a place of indulgence and decadence to complement the wild feel of the island. Enjoy a welcome drink with your Madeira guide and discuss the itinerary for the next few days. A high level of customization is possible with the private four-wheel drive tour and the yacht expedition, with options to discover different parts of Madeira dependent on your interests and mood. You will not need to decide now, but while introducing the region’s history, the guide is likely to inspire your imagination.

Detailed Description

Portugal dazzles with authenticity as medieval cities are packed with cobbles and charm, a river weaves through the old Port vineyards, scenes are painted in colorful blue tiles, and traditional food has been given a contemporary local makeover. The great highlight of Portugal is the opportunity to uncover the realities of each region of this beautiful country. The great challenge is knowing where to go and who to meet, for this is not a country that widely advertises its great pleasures as rather they are kept secret and low-key as one means of preserving the authenticity. On this luxury 2020 tour, you will be guided privately by local experts, and their insider knowledge will ensure that you go far beyond what is found in the guidebooks and into a land that is proud of its tradition and unseen heritage.

This luxury tour includes three nights on the island of Madeira, two in Porto, then four nights in capital city Lisbon. Each day is led by local specialists, so whether you are meeting the winemakers in a Porto cellar, exploring pre-Moorish history in Sintra, or cruising around Madeira in a private yacht, your excursions will showcase electric highlights.  This will allow you to taste both the urban and the rural pleasures, as well as the scent of wilderness that Portugal’s coast can provide. As you cross the country, there will be a focus on all the paradigms as every day will celebrate the very best of what Portugal has to offer: culture, history, cuisine, wine, landscapes, beaches, medieval cities and colorful modern neighborhoods.

First Madeira, the redolent island off the coast of Africa. Local markets and private studios are among the stops on your first day, complemented by a four-wheel drive adventure across the heart of the island the next. Set sail the following day as dramatic cliffs serve as the backdrop to the serene Atlantic waters and beaches that are inaccessible by land.  You could also choose to follow Madeira’s hiking trails instead, as with its wild feel and tranquil atmosphere, the island is an easy way to start your discovery of luxury Portugal.

Fly to Porto the next day, and your boutique hotel will overlook the port cellars and the bridge to the historical center. So many beautiful buildings fill this living UNESCO World Heritage Site, the liberal use of blue tiles connect the Roman, medieval, baroque and contemporary. Spend an afternoon exploring with one of the city’s pre-eminent guides, before a day on the Douro River. Like so much in Portugal, the private ravelo boat cruise blends adventure and discovery with a laid-back cadence. The drive south to Lisbon will provide an opportunity to explore further with a stop in 13th-century Coimbra and the whitewashed brilliance of medieval Obidos.

Lisbon can be vibrant and colorful, and the Portuguese capital can also be soothing and sublime. Built across seven hills, it is a city with many different sides, and all will be experienced on a private tour with an insider. There’s the eye-catching Alfama and the monuments of Belem, but also neighborhoods of vintage stores and grand cathedrals that overlook the city. Enjoy unique encounters with esteemed local artists, travel further afield to the fairytale world of Sintra, take a day in the fabulous Alentejo region, and return each evening to a version of Lisbon that best suits your mood. You will quickly understand why Portugal has been one of the world’s most talked about destinations throughout recent years.  Begin planning your dream Portugal tour by connecting with one of our luxury Portugal travel companies.

Portugal Travel Review: Waves of Nazare, Obidos, Alentejo Region, Cork Factory Tour, Local Artist, Food & Drink
I booked this trip before the CoVid pandemic. We postponed the original trip scheduled in March of 2020 to December of 2021. I just returned from Portugal with my daughter. The trip was amazing! We were fully vaccinated and boosted and Portugal is doing an excellent job with safety! Testing was frequent and everyone was masked. We spent three nights in Porto and five in Lisbon. The waves at Nazare are a sight to behold as are the towns of Obidos, Sintra, and many more. Be sure to have a cherry drink of Jinha served in a chocolate cup! The Alentejo (wow, cork factory tour pretty cool) and Douro regions (the winery!) provided delicious wines and Ports as well! Oh and the food…delicious! I cannot say enough about the kind, warm people we met and our guides were amazing! If you go in December, the Christmas lights, roasted chestnuts and shopping are all incredible. The hotels that Zicasso/the travel company chose were above and beyond also! They clearly know the area and provided a top notch experience to us. We will be traveling with this company again! Thank You!

Portugal Trip Review: Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, Nazare, Aveiro, Wineries, Cooking Class, Private Tour, Monasteries, 11-Day Travel
A big thank you to Marisa and our guide! Marisa did an exceptional job planning our 11-day private tour throughout Portugal. She coordinated with a fantastic guide. We could not have asked for a better Guide than him. His knowledge of Portuguese history, culture, and cuisine is beyond belief. Some of the highlights of our trip were the Lisbon Cooking Academy where we learned how to cook a three-course Portuguese meal. Marina was an exceptional Chef! We shopped first at a fresh market for all of the ingredients. I will upload those pictures. We then began our exploration of Portugal. The highlights of those trips were the UNESCO sites. Pena Palace and Sintra were spectacular. We had two visits to wineries one was Quinta do Quetzal (6-course meal with 5 pairings) and we also did an olive oil tasting at Mainova where we toured the olive farm. Make sure you visit the Convent of Christ and Batalha Monastery. Nazare Beach was beautiful- make sure you ask our guide for lunch or dinner reservations at Pangeia by the Sea. He always knows the best places! Especially when you get to Aveiro, there is an incredible two Michelin star restaurant there. (Salpoente) Porto has a totally different vibe than that of the bustling city of Lisbon. We did a walking food tour there that should not be missed. The typical sausage hotdog of Porto with a cold Super Bock is super fantastic. I had no idea how much I would like port wine. Douro Valley Vineyard Quinta do la Rosa is not to be missed. Great tour of the manufacturing of all of their wines followed by a tasting and 3-course lunch with pairings. We had a great port wine tasting just outside of Porto. Our last stop was Obidos where we were able to enjoy Ginja liqueur out of chocolate cups. Our last night was a sailboat tour of the Lisbon harbor, what a way to end an incredible vacation! Thank you again, to Marisa and our guide.

Travel Review: Luxury Trip to Portugal & Spain, Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Evora, Sintra, Merida, Douro Valley Wine Tours

We had a wonderful trip to Portugal with an itinerary created by this travel agency based on our preferences. They met us at our first hotel in Porto with a programmed GPS, cell phone and a device to create a WiFi hot spot wherever we traveled. They offered a guide with a car to sites in Porto, Braga and Guimares and again in Lisbon and Sintra. This freed us to relax and enjoy the cities without a car but also learning so much of the history of Portugal provided by our guides. They secured a a rental car for us to continue through the Douro Valley Wine country then south visiting smaller towns with castles and fortifications as far back as the Romans. We chose mid level accommodations that were all unique. A restaurant and dinner reservation they arranged in Evora was intimate, family owned and the best culinary experience of the trip. Transport to and from airports, connections with guides, rental car pickup and drop off was all seamless and stress free.

Portugal Family Tour Review: Lisbon, Sintra, Evora, Porto, Algarve, Madeira, Douro Valley, Cooking Class, Tile-Painting Workshop, 13 Nights

The travel agent from Zicasso's tour company planned for my family of four the most spectacular and luxurious two-week trip around Portugal. We traveled to and enjoyed the highlights of Lisbon, the romantic architecture in Sintra, the incredible history of Évora, the beautiful coastline of the Algarve, the laid-back atmosphere and gorgeous scenery of Madeira, the beautiful, historical, bustling city of Porto, and the stunning scenery of the Douro Valley.

The travel agent's suggestions and bookings were all perfectly aligned with what we envisioned and the accommodations booked were all beautifully appointed and family-oriented – five-star hotels that catered to the entire family, with indoor pools and kids greeted with backpacks and toys at the door, and nightly treats on pillows.

The tour guides booked were all very knowledgeable and kind. They were patient with my two- and four-year-olds, and taught us all so many new, amazing things.

Every day was a highlight, but I would say my girls really enjoyed the tile painting as well as the pastel de nata-making workshops.

My husband and I really enjoyed Évora and Sintra, and truly seeing the beauty and history of it all.

We absolutely fell in love with Portugal, the culture, and the food. My only regret is not having more time so we could’ve seen the Azores as well and stayed even longer.

We so look forward to this travel agent planning us another perfect vacation in the near future!
