One-Week Highlights of Rwanda Safari

What to expect on this itinerary
Black rhinos returning, lions thriving and chimpanzees just habituated are just a few of the highlights found in a new national park in Rwanda. With a gorilla population that is stronger than it has been for centuries, now is the time to visit Rwanda. Best of all, this is the time to explore while tourists remain relatively thin on the ground. Connecting Rwanda’s old favorites and new experiences too, this signature safari will also celebrate the remarkable story of a country that has exceeded all expectations in its regeneration.

Kigali – A City and a Country Transformed: 24 Years On
Rwanda’s progress is remarkable. The country is clean and green, where plastic bags are illegal, and nothing ever looks out of place on the streets. The vibrancy you associate with East Africa – colorful dresses, beaming smiles, a gregarious atmosphere on the streets – is enhanced by a modern touch, especially in capital city Kigali. In your first two hours, you will be nearly unable to imagine that this is a country ravaged so recently. Make a stop at Kimironko Market to absorb the smiles and smells, along with the shouts of traders that flutter past laden stalls. Enjoy lunch at one of the up and coming restaurants in the city, where the food is building on the nourishment of tradition.
Through the afternoon, you will visit three genocide memorials, each with a different angle on the story to give you a complete perspective. The National Genocide Centre provides context, detailing the events leading up to the tragedy, pulling no punches in its vehement criticism of the UN and the broader international community. Beneath the ground are the bodies of more than 250,000, just one insight into the scale. At Nyamata Church and Murambi, you will witness what took place as clothes hang from rafters, blood stains cover walls, bones are stacked in piles while survivors narrate the tales, and it will be difficult not to be moved to tears, standing in these haunting places untouched since 1994. There is also the heartwarming element as when you look at the past, you can appreciate just how far Rwanda has moved forward. The evening is free as you settle in from any jet lag, and your hotel has an excellent restaurant at your disposal.

My wife and I approached this Africa travel company in February, requesting a draft itinerary and recommendations for a visit to Rwanda. We received prompt, well-informed assistance, and a final itinerary which, in retrospect, turned out to be absolutely perfect. Our tour of the country was well-structured in terms of acclimatisation, pace and variety. On the second last day of our visit, we met up with another South African group who had opted for a different tour agency, and were exhausted by the disproportionate amount of time spent on the road rather than enjoying the delights of their respective destinations.
In Rwanda itself, Primate Safaris were superb - always punctual, extremely well-informed, and attentive to our individual needs. our driver for the week was the perfect mentor and we felt 100% safe in his hands at all times. That was also true for the guides and trackers we encountered at both Akagera and Volcanoes National Parks.
At all destinations, accommodation, food and support services were as good as we'd hoped for. Where minor problems arose, staff went out of their way to set things right.
Rwanda has a temperate climate, charming people and a developing tourism industry which clearly places great emphasis on the safety and comfort of it's clients. Our experiences of the wildlife will stay with us for many years. If you wish to see the best of Africa - visit this fascinating, beautiful country.

We used this travel agency to organize our 3 week tour of Tanzania and Rwanda in February of 2018.
They were fantastic. The trip was seamless. The guides were first rate. Our agent knew my wife was a birder. So she teamed us up with our guide who not only was a remarkable person but whose knowledge of birding was first rate and a proud Tanzanian! Every time we saw a new animal or bird he got as excited as us- as if he discovered a treasure. That’s the type of guide you want! With his help my wife identified close to 200 new, species of birds (lifers!). He also seemed to know everyone in Tanzania! Every morning we were met with a vacuumed and cleaned car to start our day afresh! Didn’t matter what time we got back, he found time. Our first guide was also a pleasure to be with. He picked us up with a smile. We toured Kigali and the gorilla trek in Rwanda. He was respectful and honest when we wanted to talk politics. Genuine. Fun to kid around with as well! The hotel selections and the flow of the itinerary was perfect. Our agent was timely and responsive to our emails and Skype calls. One of the couples had to cancel post deposits and our travel agency made the refunds both seamless and with compassion and empathy (she could have insisted on an admin fee or worse-but she didn’t even raise the point-speaks volumes!) imwould have no hesitation in recommending this company or doing another trip with them.

Our safari travel company did a superb job of putting together an amazing East Africa trip for us. An african safari has been a “bucket list” trip for us for many years. When we decided to make this trip happen we knew that we wanted to do it right. We did a fair amount of research about where we wanted to go in general but we had no clue about how to make the specifics work.
When we started working with this agent, the trip quickly came together. She took the time to really understand our interests, the way that we like to travel, what we most wanted to see and do, and my specific needs as a photographer.
Our trip included Rwanda for the Gorilla Trekking (amazing, beautiful creatures), and terrific wildlife viewing and photography in Tanzania. We visited Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Serangeti National Park and Mahale National Park for chimpanzee trekking. We capped the whole trip off with four relaxing days on the beach in Zanzibar.
We were able to see and photograph every animal and scene on our list. We saw four of “the big five” on our very first day. We saw the “great migration” cross the Mara River. We saw chimpanzees, rhinos, and more baby animals then we ever imagined.
The accommodations that our travel company arranged for us were terrific throughout the trip. We stayed in camps that perfectly suited our needs and interests. They all had that perfect balance of luxury and authenticity where they were very, very comfortable but you still knew that you could only be in Africa.
We had wonderful driver/guides in both Rwanda and Tanzania. Our agent arranged for us to have just one terrific guide for our entire safari in Tanzania. This was important because we were then able to bond with our guide who got to know us and what we were most interested in. He was always willing to make it happen. We met many other travelers along the way who had a different guide at each camp they stayed at and they did not see a fraction of what we saw.
Out trip exceeded our expectations in every way and I would highly recommend this company for your next trip to Africa.
