Unraveling Secrets

Edinburgh is filled with tempting nooks that urge you forward to explore the depths of the city. The narrow lanes feel like a labyrinth until they wind back to a familiar avenue. Old storefronts are filled with modern shops and world-class restaurants. The cobblestone streets provide cacophonous echoes that bounce off old walls made of stone. The urban village of Cramond sits near the mouth of the River Almond and creates a bright picture perfect area that combines landscape, charm, and history; from the Romans in the 2nd Century AD to a Bronze Age settlement dating back to 8,500 BC. The nearby riverfront is decorated with ruined mills and roman relics. Your private guide meets you at the airport and escorts you to your hotel located in central Edinburgh. The aroma of smoky wood and malt is never far away and settles you into the luxuries of the city and the soon to come flavors of Scotland.

Luxury Scotland Tour Review: Edinburgh, Isle of Skye, Inverness, Speyside, Historic Sites, Local Cuisine, Distillery, 10-Day Trip

Our trip, starting and ending in Edinburgh and looping through the Highlands with an emphasis on the Isle of Skye, Inverness, and Speyside, was very enjoyable, much to the credit of our travel agency. We were awed by the sheer beauty of the Highlands, the warmth and friendliness of the Scottish people, and the country's fascinating historical sites.

Our culinary experience was outstanding, with a variety of traditional dishes and contemporary cuisine prepared by world-class chefs. As could be expected, distillery visits gave us an opportunity to enjoy a range of whiskey flavors and styles.

Jane, the owner of the travel agency, was accommodating in creating the ideal itinerary, finding superb lodging and dining experiences for us, and helping us through last-minute bookings due to a flight cancellation.

Our driver/guide was personable, knowledgeable, timely, and professional. He entertained us with amusing Scottish lore, local and regional information, and eagerly adjusted the itinerary as needed to suit our personal tastes and interests.

London, Scotland Travel Review: Windsor, Villages, Wimbledon, Harry Potter World, Covent Garden, 2 Weeks

Our Zicasso trip organizer planned a perfect holiday for us. First, my husband and I traveled to London and stayed in the Covent Garden area for two days before taking the train to Edinburgh and continuing on to Pitlochry, Inverness, the Isle of Skye, and, finally, Glencoe, before training back to London. We met family in Wimbledon for three days of tennis and then went to central London for four nights to see the sites there.

Our agent arranged all hotels and a house in Wimbledon and the Pimlico area for the family. The itinerary was wonderful and included some out-of-the-way places we enjoyed. She made suggested dinner reservations and all were good. She got us a rental car, transfers, and some pre-booked tours and tickets. The travel company was wonderful before and during the trip.

Review: Scotland Vacation, Edinburgh, Inverness, Glasgow, Glencoe, Isle of Skye, Speyside, Whiskey Tasting

This travel agent was great to work with. She was able to take our preferences and build an itinerary that covered them while making sure we made best use of our time.  She was also able to make recommendations for places to visit that we wouldn’t have known about.  That’s one of the reasons we use Zicasso instead of making our own arrangements.  We do a lot of research prior to traveling but want to make sure we don’t bypass an important site.

One of our days was spent tasting Speyside whisky, and our agent encouraged us to stay in Inverness and use a guide for getting to and around Speyside, good call.  While we selected the distilleries to visit in Speyside, she recommended the Dalmore Distillery on the way to Tain.  That was a good call too as it turned out to be one of our favorites.  Our agent was also good natured while dealing with our numerous questions.  I’m sure she thought they were interminable, but she answered them all promptly.  Lodging was something we left entirely in her hands, and, even though she was forced to scramble due to cancellations, she found comfortable and really interesting place to stay.  We wouldn’t hesitate to call on her again.

Luxury UK Trip Review: England & Scotland, Seaham Beach Sea Glass, Hiking Isle of the Skye & Cotswold, Edinburgh, Blooming Heather
Our trip to the UK was slightly complicated and involved a lot of physical traveling between both Scotland and England. I worked with a trip planner from start to finish and although there were a few hiccups along the way, our overall experience was wonderful. We traveled from Washington, DC to London. From there we went to Edinburgh, Inverness, The Isle of Skye, Glasgow, Seaham, and the Cotswolds. And, the first week we traveled with another couple. Our planner had a lot of planning to do which involved a lot of moving pieces. He did an excellent job. Along the way, we took a train, had drivers, and also drove ourselves with a rental car for several days. At each stop, our reservations, drivers and activities were all carefully organized. The only exception was our rental car reservation. When we got to Inverness, the rental car place had given our car away, because they had the wrong information and thought we were picking it up at 9:00 am instead of 5pm, which would have been impossible because we were driving from Edinburgh that day and didn't leave until 10:00am. The problem came when the rental car place told us they had NO cars for us and would not have one the next day either. Fortunately, we had an awesome guide/driver who handled the entire situation with professionalism. He ended up staying with us until he had secured a car for us from another car rental agency for the next morning. Our guide/driver took care of everything allowing us to stay stress-free:) My husband and his brother were playing golf the next day and needed the car to get to the course, so our guide/driver arranged for a prepaid cab to pick them up to take them to the car rental agency. The guide/driver really went above and beyond what he was hired to do and should receive kudos for turning a potentially big problem into barely an inconvenience. Also, the car we ended up receiving was a lovely Mercedes upgrade from our original car hire. Our driver/guide was also an excellent guide in Edinburg and full of information about Scotland and that city in particular. He was fun, easy to talk with and full of ideas. He heard we loved Outlander, the series, so made it a point to stop at many of the places where Outlander was filmed!  We also had a one day guide in London. She was wonderful, and full of information about the history of England, especially London. Our driver from Seaham to the Cotswolds and he, too, was a wealth of information (former teacher) and was very interesting to talk to. The drivers and guides really helped to enhance the overall experience of being in another country. We stayed in a variety of hotels, all with their own uniqueness. Our favorite was probably the hotel on the north coast of England. This hotel also had a spa with great facilities. The people were amazingly nice and accommodating. Our room was absolutely beautiful and large. We are sea glass collectors and Seaham Beach is known for its treasures from the sea, because of glass factories that used to operate in the area a long time ago. We found lots of sea glass so Seaham did not disappoint. The Isle of Skye in Scotland and the Cotswolds in England were our two favorite places . . . of course they were the farthest apart from one another .  . . Skye is an island in the upper west corner of Scotland and the Cotswolds are about 2 hours west of London. In two weeks, we traveled many, many miles, but we really wanted to get a feel for both countries.  To do a trip like this on our own would have been very difficult. Using Zicasso and this tour company made our two weeks so easy! The issues we had along the way were all made right by the travel partners involved without question. In fact, one of the most impressive things that happened, was when we got to the last three days of our trip . . . by the time we arrived in the Cotswolds we were tired of touring and traveling from place to place. I called our planner to tell him we wanted to cancel our trip to Bath and Stonehenge.  . . all we wanted to do was hike. All of the time it took to travel from place to place had taken away time we had to hike and explore. He was able to get us a full refund for money spent on that final tour to Bath and Stonehenge, and that was greatly appreciated:)Once we returned, the planner called to go over everything about our trip and to ask for constructive feedback on how things could have been better. We talked for over an hour and in my opinion, his concern and attention to detail is what makes this company so successful. We are looking forward to working with him again to plan a trip that concentrates more on hiking and revisiting the places we fell in love with. We also want to include Wales next time and he has already sent some suggestions.

Scotland, Ireland Vacation Review: Killarney, Dublin, Edinburgh, Isle of Skye, Cooking Class, 15-Day Trip

Our anniversary trip to Scotland and Ireland, planned by Zicasso’s travel company, was unforgettable!

Our travel agent was very easy to work with! She made several adjustments to our itinerary at our request and also to address some of the vendor's changes, such as one of our flights (originally from Inverness to Dublin) and one of our "in a local home, dinner and cooking lessons" (originally in Scotland). She was cognizant of my budget constraints and suggested I do some of the driving myself to reduce the cost of private drivers.

Then, during our trip, little things like a wine and cheese board in our room upon our arrival in Edinburgh were very much appreciated! Also, when things didn't go as planned (flight delay from Aberdeen to Dublin), she was available (at 2am Pacific time) to help smooth out the bumps! Even the way our trip itinerary built up to a subtle crescendo with our stay in a castle made this a trip we will never forget!

Scotland Vacation Review: Oban, Glencoe, Fort William, Inverness, Kiltmaker's Shop Private Tour, 12-Day Trip
Our trip to Scotland was a blast; Anne Marie and this travel company did an excellent job accommodating our budget and flight change (word to others: sometimes it's cheaper to fly into Edinburgh rather than Inverness). Our tour had just enough whisky tastings to satisfy hubby and a good amount of castles for me.
