Day 1

Timbavati Private Game Reserve – Stunning First Safari Experiences

Is it easy to imagine the exhilarating moments of a Kruger safari. You will be exploring the wilderness and searching for lions, elephants, and all the other legendary, African mammals. Preconceptions usually revolve around excitement and thrills, but a Kruger safari is serene at heart, especially in the Timbavati. This is the most laid-back and compact Kruger region, and you will not need to spend all day, bouncing around a dusty savannah. In the Timbavati, you can often see the animals directly from your lodge, and you can take a picnic and dine on the view with hippos and buffalos as they quarrel at a watering hole beneath you. In short, you can take it slow and easy and still experience incredible wildlife sightings.

After flying into Johannesburg, you will board a mid-morning safari flight to the Greater Kruger. The transfer to the lodge is a game drive, which will be a beautiful journey past many of the large species that also call this landscape home. An afternoon game drive will be included, and there is an excellent chance of encountering the full Big Five on a single Timbavati drive. Still, do not think too much about the Big Five and checking off your list because today is mostly about settling into the safari atmosphere. You will experience the space and serenity of the Timbavati and drift off to a soundtrack that is dominated by elephants and baboons.

Detailed Description

The Kruger is Africa untamed, and it is one of the continent’s oldest protected areas, which is a landscape that is larger than many US states and where more than 100 mammal species are able to thrive. Nowhere else in Africa can rival the Kruger’s diversity and abundance of wildlife. Close to half of the world’s rhinos can be found here. Usually, elusive animals such as leopards can be seen on a daily basis, and you can arrive with dreams of the Big Five, and then quickly realize that five is just the very beginning. Such an enormous wilderness is dominated by contrasts and nuances, and there are over a dozen different habitats to explore here, each with their own animal cast.

This one-week South Africa safari will reveal the contrasts of this landscape and celebrate Kruger’s wild appeal. You will travel between habitats and ecosystems from the immense beauty of Blyde River Canyon to the mysterious Lebombo Mountains. The safari experience is not only about where you can go and what you will see, but the manner in which you see it. Over these seven days, you will enjoy the complete range of Kruger activities, including hot air ballooning, game walks, nighttime drives, and even a mountain bike safari if you wish. All this ensures that you can discover the Kruger and its wildlife from all of the possible angles. You will get closer, experience the big and the small, and come to understand the circle of life out here.

It is important to understand that each area of the Kruger offers something unique in terms of wildlife, atmosphere, and experience. On this one-week, South Africa safari, you will visit the four most essential Kruger areas. You will begin in the Timbavati, which is a classic bush savannah that is ideal for easy first encounters with Kruger’s larger animals. Then, you will travel to the Blyde River Canyon, which is an area that is light on wildlife but is arguably the most beautiful landscape anywhere in Africa. Then, you will settle into Mala Mala for three nights. This is the most game-rich part of Kruger and perhaps the most game-rich part of Africa.

In Mala Mala, you can track the big and the small in addition to watching how different animals approach a river to drink. Like in the Timbavati, there will be an opportunity for daily game walks and nighttime drives, so you can understand how the Kruger is different, depending on the time of day. Mala Mala is part of the Sabi Sands, but it feels separated from its neighboring reserves, purely because it has the greatest wildlife location in the entire Greater Kruger. On day six, you will venture across Kruger National Park to Lebombo, gaining a stunning impression of its scale and changing habitats.

Like the previous days, you will have a private guide and driver. This ensures the safari always revolves around your interests, including wildlife photography or tracking a particular animal. You will culminate your safari experience in the Lebombo Mountains, where limited water makes for dramatic wildlife scenes. It is delightfully wild and serene out here with a clifftop retreat that provides a real escape from the world. This handpicked lodge will contrast your experiences in Timbavati and Mala Mala, and the camp is often surrounded by wildlife. After seven nights in Kruger, you will fly back to Johannesburg for a departure from South Africa’s main international airport.

South Africa & Madagascar Luxury Family Vacation Review: Cape Town, Johannesburg, Blyde River Canyon, Game Drives, 2-Week Trip
I would like to focus this review on Natalie at the travel agency. Bar none, she is the best travel advisor I have ever worked with. I have been traveling all over the world and in the United States for well over 15 years. I've worked with all grades of travel agents including very high end and well known ones, nationally and internationally. Natalie surpassed all of them. She worked with me to create a 2 week South Africa itinerary for my family of 6. She even helped blend this seamlessly with a volunteer trip that we were taking to Madagascar at the end of our trip even though this wasn't her specialty. Finally, we're vegan. Natalie was great at giving us ideas and also arranging for vegan meal options at the various hotels/accommodations we stayed at.We started planning relatively close to our trip date so this put a bit more pressure on her. I had done a lot of my own research and had my own ideas also. She worked with all of this and made it so easy. She worked very efficiently and got back to me quickly; was always very thorough and knowledgeable when answering questions; she was very flexible and was never at a loss finding us alternative and options when I asked for more. To make things even more complicated, right in the middle of our time in Madagascar, we had to cut our trip short and return early. Using Whatsapp from Madagascar, I connected with Natalie. Together, we were able to arrange the return in a matter of hours. Her help was invaluable as our volunteer camp in Madagascar had no electricity and very poor network connection! She made the change quick and easy. When our process first started with Natalie, my first concern was if she was real or was she a scam artist trying to take my money. Sending large sums of money to someone who I've only met online was not something I was comfortable doing. In response, Natalie didn't become defensive. She simply sent me so much information about herself and her company that I had no doubts that she was real. This is just one example of how she handled our interactions so quickly, efficiently and with care. After asking some background questions, she sent me some potential itineraries. She  provided options and alternatives along the way. As I had some ideas of my own, she was very quick to give me feedback on my ideas and also to help incorporate them as needed. Her knowledge of South Africa was invaluable in making our final decisions. Our trip took us to Cape Town and the surrounding areas for several days, then to Timbavati Reserve for some game drives for several days, Blyde Canyon for a day and then Johannesburg. Every part of our trip met or exceeded our expectations. Even the rides she arranged from airport to hotel and our tour guides/companies were all wonderful choices. The tour guides were personable and knowledgeable adding quite a bit to the experience. We always felt safe and were able to focus fully on making the most of our experiences.I cannot recommend Natalie and this travel company enough. Fantastic!

Review: Luxury Africa Safari, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Chobe Game Lodge, Lions Sands Ivory Lodge, Okavango Delta

WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING!

Making a Safari in Africa was on the top of my bucket list and I wanted to do it “in style”. We also wanted a company who was located in Africa and who had established a good infrastructure. We hoped to avoid delays between inter-camps on the small planes.

All this was fulfilled by this safari travel company. They designed a programme for us where we were eased into safari life beginning with Chobe Game Lodge, then onto our first tent experience at Xakanaxa, then onto Okavango delta area for a water and walking safari experience. Our agent then organsed our trip to Cape Town and a sojourn to Hermanus by private car and then flew us back to the stupendous Lions Sands Ivory Lodge in Kruger. Of special mention in Hermanus is the charming Ocean Eleven B&B. The location, room and the breakfast spread deserve special mention.

Throughout our trip, all accommodation was wonderful, staff, game wardens and trackers most knowledgeable and kind, all transfers seamless (so we didn’t miss any game drives), the private car service for the Cape experience was excellent .. and of course, the animals.

On Safari, one expects to see many animals. Well, in the 4 lodges/camps that we stayed, we saw elephants, lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, jackal, spotted wild dogs, buffaloes, rhinos, impalas, kudus, sable, bush bucks, nyalas, waterbuck, wildebeest, giraffe, zebras, hippos, warthogs, baboons, small animals like banded mongoose, crocodiles and countless species of birds and the beautiful African frog. And then the whales in Hermanus

We stayed at : Chobe Game Lodge (3N), Xakanaxa Camp (2N), Okavango (Delta) Camp (2N) all in Botswana, Ocean Eleven B&B @ Hermanus (2N), Ivory Lodge, Lions Sands in Kruger, S.Africa (2N). We also had 3 nights in Cape Town and an over-nighter at Johannesburg.

We confidently recommend this company to anyone who is considering a Safari. On a scale of 1-5, we would give them the full 5 points.

Luxury Africa Safari Review: Botswana, Zambia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Cape Town, Victoria Falls, Okavango Delta, Wine Country

Nothing but great things to say about our experience with this Africa safari travel planner!! The day after we entered our Zicasso request online, we were contacted by our agent.  We clicked immediately. She got right away what we wanted to achieve during our trip and began helping us to develop a workable plan. If we drove her crazy with all of our revisions, you would never have known it: she was focused, resourceful, and upbeat, offering great advice at critical junctures to come up with a plan that met our needs and maximized both our time and convenience. She went the extra mile to ensure that we had a great trip, checked in frequently to find out how things were going and made great recommendations for restaurants and local attractions. We felt very pampered and we were! The outlines of our final trip included stops in Cape Town; the Blyde River Canyon; Kruger National Park; Victoria Falls; Botswana; and  Johannesburg.

The company made all arrangements for us at two great safari camps: Kings in Kruger, and Shinde in Botswana. Both were excellent – knowledgeable guides; incredible surroundings; generous and welcoming staff.  We lucked out and managed to see the Big Five in just two days!  A highlight of the Botswana safari was spending 45 minutes observing a pride of eight lions congregated about 40 feet away from our open-air jeep. At Kruger, we had a similar up-close and personal viewing experience of two leopards and two white rhinos.

Our travel company also made all arrangements for five internal flights and pick-ups and one wonderfully guided day tour of the Blyde River Canyon: there was never a hitch! We even crossed four borders. The hand-offs were smooth; the transport vehicles clean and comfortable; the drivers safe and enthusiastic. All the practical details were attended to from tasty box lunches to confirmation calls the day before transfers.

Our travel company also arranged two wonderful tours in Cape Town for us and we were especially privileged to have them led by the Managing Director of the company.  He is a consummate professional and was incredibly knowledgeable and informative about every topic that we discussed. He is also charming and delightful on a personal level and all of these qualities are reflected in the company he manages.  Our two day-tours were to the Cape of Good Hope which included a spectacular gourmet multi-course wine-paired lunch at the Flagship, a restaurant located in the home of the chef and situated near the edge of the sea in Simon’s Town with beautiful views all around. We were joined by a handful of other quests and spent a lovely afternoon in their company sharing a great culinary experience.

The Managing Director also led us on a one day tour that included stops at Hermanus in the Western Cape for whale watching and at two beautiful towns in the wine country – Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. We tasted the extraordinary wines of the Delaire Graff and Tokara estates, both of which had distinctive architecture and art, but the Delaire setting was breathtakingly luxurious.

All in all, an unforgettable trip thanks to this company!

South Africa, Botswana & Zimbabwe Luxury Travel Review: Cape Town, Kruger National Park, Okavango Delta, Wildlife, 2-Week Trip
Neil did an awesome job curating our 2-week trip. He helped us to minimize the travel time from Cape Town to our camp in Botswana (and onward to Zimbabwe and then back into Kruger Park area in SA).  Saw all the big animals in both Botswana and SA ... guides at "and Beyond" in Okavango Delta and in the game reserve in Sabi Sand respectfully were outstanding!

Review: Africa Safari, Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Chobe National Park, Cape Town, Victoria Falls, River Cruise

This safari travel company went above and beyond in the planning of my "once in a lifetime" trip.  They got us in and out of 3 countries in Africa without any complications.  The two safari lodges that they chose gave us very different experiences. Kambaku Lodge, a private reserve on the border of Kruger was an off road, go wherever the animals are, kind of safari.  Muchenje Safari Lodge, in Botswana, had a daily drive into Chobe National Park.  The highlight of Muchenje is the river cruise where we were able to get up close and personal with Cape Buffalo and more elephants than we could count.

We added an additional tour at the last minute in Cape Town and our travel company immediately took care of all of it.

They did an amazing job!

Review: Luxury Africa Family Safari, South Africa, Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Kruger National Park

I like to think of myself as a low maintenance girl, but the truth is, I’m not. And that’s ok. Work hard play hard.  So when I, with my parents, husband and daughter decided to take the trip of a lifetime to South Africa, every detail was really important.  We knew we wanted a mix of a Safari vacation with a visit to Capetown.  For the Safari, all I had heard about was Kruger National park and then nothing else.  My entire view of SA was really what I knew through friends I met during their visits to the US. I found this travel agent on Zicasso and, although she didn’t have that many reviews, she beat out two other well-known companies because of her attention to detail, her exceptional hotel recommendations and her anticipation of what we might need.

For example, when looking for Safari lodges to stay at, she asked whether we were ok being in the malaria zone because my daughter is 10 and parents are older.  I had no idea the park was in the malaria zone and none of the other travel agents mentioned this to me! Instead, our agent found us a fantastic 5 star lodge in Welgevonden reserve (Mhondoro Game Lodge) where we had the absolute best guide and staff ever. She also booked us on a charter flight from Johannesburg to the reserve and back, and then the domestic flights from Johannesburg to Capetown and back (we had already booked the international flights on our own).  During our trip, our agent even went online and checked us in for our flights! She also arranged for executive meet and greet services for all our intra-country transfers which helped a ton.  Our travel agent also did an excellent job of booking all road transfers for us and every driver was at least 10 minutes early - we never had to wait - and super friendly and helpful.   She told all hotels, restaurants, etc. that I was gluten-free, she was always available via WhatsApp during our vacation and we even met her for lunch while out for a day tour of Stellenbosch & the winelands - so nice to put her pretty face to a name.

All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend this agent and this travel team for any travel in Southern Africa (in addition to S. Africa, I believe she also does Botswana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and some other southern African countries). This travel agent has set an extremely high standard and I wish I could just take her back home with me to organize the rest of my life!
