Detailed Description

There are few individuals whose life inspires global change for a better world. In memory of Nelson Mandela, we're introducing a journey that follows in his footsteps and reflects on his legacy. The year 2014 will mark the 50th anniversary of Mandela's sentence to life imprisonment and the 20th anniversary of Mandela becoming the first black South African president.

“Nelson Mandela’s life is a story of the triumph of the human spirit,” said Brian Tan, CEO of Zicasso. “To be sentenced to life imprisonment and then emerge 30 years later to become the president, after 27 years in prison, is one of the greatest inspirational stories. Our goal of this unique tour is to give travelers an immersion into his story of sheer will, clarity of purpose, and compassion while getting to know the beauty of South Africa.”

The journey begins in Johannesburg, a vibrant and busy city that is the economic powerhouse of South Africa, and also the scene of some of the country’s darkest political moments. You will stay at the refined and exclusive Saxon Hotel in the leafy suburb of Sandhurst, famous for being where Nelson Mandela chose to live while writing his remarkable autobiography, ‘Long Walk to Freedom’.

A master storyteller who won a “Tour Guide of the Year” award, our private guide will take you on tours of the city. Begin by visiting Mandela’s home in the ‘Struggle’ years in Soweto, as well as the haunting and evocative Apartheid Museum. After Soweto, you visit Liliesleaf Farm, where Umkhonto we Sizwe (meaning “Spear of the Nation”) the military wing of the ANC, and the Congress Alliance were headquartered prior to the infamous government raid where Mandela was arrested in 1963. Along with the interactive displays and engaging tales from your guide, you will gain fascinating insights into the early days of the liberation movement, and the key players within it. Follow up with a visit to the Constitutional Court, seat of the nation’s democratic heritage, and a witness to more than a century of turbulent history, from the British and Boer conflicts to the birth of a new and modern democracy.

Note: During your time in Johannesburg, a meeting might possibly be arranged with a member of the Mandela family for meaningful first-hand accounts and discussion, depending on schedule and availability.

Your guide will also bring you to the outskirts of the city, to the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. This is where some of the most remarkable paleo anthropological fossils have been discovered in recent years, giving you a window into the deepest reaches of our human past.

Next, you jet off to Cape Town, South Africa’s oldest and most beautiful city. The Table Bay Hotel is situated in the bustling port of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, with the iconic bulk of Table Mountain looming over it as a backdrop.

From here you take a ferry to the infamous Robben Island, the penitentiary where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his imprisonment. Now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it serves as a poignant reminder of the price South Africa paid for its freedom. The curators are former inmates of the prison, and you tour the site with them, learning at first hand how life was during the years of the Apartheid regime. Spend a moment of quiet reflection in Mandela’s cell, and imagine the mind of a man who could forgive his oppressors after almost two decades within those walls.

Returning to the city, you then visit the Presidential Residence at Groote Schuur- a magnificent historical building that stands in vivid contrast to Mandela’s prison cell, and where he resided after being elected President of South Africa in 1994.

Round off your day by taking the cableway to the top of Table Mountain, 3000ft above sea level, with tremendous views of the city, mountains and ocean at your feet.

The following day, take a walking tour through the ancient Bo-Kaap district, a colorful, cobblestoned warren of quirky homes and mosques that was previously known as the Malay Quarter. Next, visit the District Six Museum in the city, where the history of the Malay Quarter and District Six are interactively presented to give you an insight into the turbulent past of the communities who resided in these vibrant multicultural areas before being forcibly evicted in the 1960s by the Apartheid regime.

After a day of history, reminiscences and anecdotes, your guide will select one of Cape Town’s wonderful restaurants to enjoy your last evening soaking up the vibrant atmosphere of the city and indulging in the finest wines and cuisine.

Return northwards to the Waterberg, where the African wildlife paradise of Shambala Private Game Reserve is located. This picturesque reserve nestles in a mountain range that is home to the famous Big Five: elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard. It is fitting that Nelson Mandela chose this location to inaugurate the Centre for Reconciliation, surrounded by the peace and tranquility of the African wilderness.

Review: Luxury Africa Family Safari, South Africa, Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Kruger National Park

I like to think of myself as a low maintenance girl, but the truth is, I’m not. And that’s ok. Work hard play hard.  So when I, with my parents, husband and daughter decided to take the trip of a lifetime to South Africa, every detail was really important.  We knew we wanted a mix of a Safari vacation with a visit to Capetown.  For the Safari, all I had heard about was Kruger National park and then nothing else.  My entire view of SA was really what I knew through friends I met during their visits to the US. I found this travel agent on Zicasso and, although she didn’t have that many reviews, she beat out two other well-known companies because of her attention to detail, her exceptional hotel recommendations and her anticipation of what we might need.

For example, when looking for Safari lodges to stay at, she asked whether we were ok being in the malaria zone because my daughter is 10 and parents are older.  I had no idea the park was in the malaria zone and none of the other travel agents mentioned this to me! Instead, our agent found us a fantastic 5 star lodge in Welgevonden reserve (Mhondoro Game Lodge) where we had the absolute best guide and staff ever. She also booked us on a charter flight from Johannesburg to the reserve and back, and then the domestic flights from Johannesburg to Capetown and back (we had already booked the international flights on our own).  During our trip, our agent even went online and checked us in for our flights! She also arranged for executive meet and greet services for all our intra-country transfers which helped a ton.  Our travel agent also did an excellent job of booking all road transfers for us and every driver was at least 10 minutes early - we never had to wait - and super friendly and helpful.   She told all hotels, restaurants, etc. that I was gluten-free, she was always available via WhatsApp during our vacation and we even met her for lunch while out for a day tour of Stellenbosch & the winelands - so nice to put her pretty face to a name.

All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend this agent and this travel team for any travel in Southern Africa (in addition to S. Africa, I believe she also does Botswana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and some other southern African countries). This travel agent has set an extremely high standard and I wish I could just take her back home with me to organize the rest of my life!

Review: Luxury Africa Safari, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Chobe Game Lodge, Lions Sands Ivory Lodge, Okavango Delta

WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING!

Making a Safari in Africa was on the top of my bucket list and I wanted to do it “in style”. We also wanted a company who was located in Africa and who had established a good infrastructure. We hoped to avoid delays between inter-camps on the small planes.

All this was fulfilled by this safari travel company. They designed a programme for us where we were eased into safari life beginning with Chobe Game Lodge, then onto our first tent experience at Xakanaxa, then onto Okavango delta area for a water and walking safari experience. Our agent then organsed our trip to Cape Town and a sojourn to Hermanus by private car and then flew us back to the stupendous Lions Sands Ivory Lodge in Kruger. Of special mention in Hermanus is the charming Ocean Eleven B&B. The location, room and the breakfast spread deserve special mention.

Throughout our trip, all accommodation was wonderful, staff, game wardens and trackers most knowledgeable and kind, all transfers seamless (so we didn’t miss any game drives), the private car service for the Cape experience was excellent .. and of course, the animals.

On Safari, one expects to see many animals. Well, in the 4 lodges/camps that we stayed, we saw elephants, lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, jackal, spotted wild dogs, buffaloes, rhinos, impalas, kudus, sable, bush bucks, nyalas, waterbuck, wildebeest, giraffe, zebras, hippos, warthogs, baboons, small animals like banded mongoose, crocodiles and countless species of birds and the beautiful African frog. And then the whales in Hermanus

We stayed at : Chobe Game Lodge (3N), Xakanaxa Camp (2N), Okavango (Delta) Camp (2N) all in Botswana, Ocean Eleven B&B @ Hermanus (2N), Ivory Lodge, Lions Sands in Kruger, S.Africa (2N). We also had 3 nights in Cape Town and an over-nighter at Johannesburg.

We confidently recommend this company to anyone who is considering a Safari. On a scale of 1-5, we would give them the full 5 points.

Review: Luxury Africa Safari & Tour, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zulu Nyala Safari Lodge, Cape Town

The following is what we wrote to the travel agency directly:

I am writing this in lieu of the survey and hope that we cover the questions.  First of all, THANK YOU!!!  Our agent was wonderful and accomodating in reference to the scheduling and the itinerary.  She was charming and friendly and was quick to respond to my questions and requests.

Upon arrival, the woman from our tour company was nice, accomodating.

The Faircity Hotel was just what we ordered, easy and near to a couple of things.  Our guide from the tour company was nice and informative.  I highly recommend the Cradle of Humankind and wish we had spent a little longer there but we arrived too late.  We went to the Sterkfontein Caves and would not recommend it for people of our age although it was interesting.  (We're not really cave people anyway)  The Apartheid Museum was good but not outstanding.  We had done a lot of reading before the trip.

Next, we got our car and drove to Hazyview. Oh, we added a GPS in the rental.  We had brought our own but you should recommwend to people that they make sure that their GPS has South Africa in it.  I had checked it at home trying to find Johannesburg and our GPS found it so I assumed they had S Africa, but somebody later told me that there is a Jburg in the US that GPS pick up! The driving wasn't bad at all, in fact, very good and easy even for us Americans.  The Tanamera Lodge was out of this world--beautiful and well managed.  We drove up to Bourne's Pothole, etc, etc, which shouldn't be missed. We stopped for lunch in Graskop on the way, a cute little touristy town.

Our next leg was a long trip from there to Swaziland.  Uneventful and easy to get thru the borders. Since we stopped at other craft places on the way, we didn't make it in time to see the candles or glass.  The Mountain Inn accomodation was OK.  We had dinner there amongst throngs of tourists but the food was good.

Then on to St Lucia Amazulu Lodge.  We had been given a note at the Mountain Inn that the front office closes at 6 and we could call when we got there.  Problem is--no phone!!  Luckily, some other tourists were there and let us in and told us where to park the car--and therre was a night watchman who found the key for us (non-English speaking)  We walked around St Lucia which is a nice town and walked out to the estuary.

We next drove to Hluhluwe the Zulu Nyala Safari Game Lodge--very good experience.  The rental car was picked up the next day.

Our transfer to Durban went smoothly as did the transfer from the CT airport.  We stayed at the Underberg Guesthouse, which we would recommend highly.  Fortunately, our in country contact had discovered that I had booked one day short there and scrambled for us and found another guesthouse for the last night--Wergelen--terrific!!!!!!!!

CT: Robben Island (good), Greenmarket Sq--fun market and lots of cafes around; District 6 Museum, a little disappointing but we're glad we went, the V and A Waterfront for a nice lunch.  Oh, and the Red and Blue buses which are hop on hop off buses touring CT and environs.  Oh, our trip to Cape Point which had been arranged by the Underberg was wonderful and beautiful, stopping by several small towns.  The penguins were delightful!  (There was a major fire on the Cape for a couple of days, which was really sad but interesting watching the helicopters trying to put it out with seawater)

Our car was delivered to Wergelen.  And we decided that we had too much stuff for the remainder of the trip so Fiona, the owner of Welgelen helped us find a shipper for our suitcases which should arrive in the PHL airport soon.(!?)

The drive to Stellenbosch and Franshoek was wonderful.  The River Manor Boutique Hotel was a great find, easy walk into town, good breakfast, nice staff. We went to Oppie Dorp, good food and not expensive and to Ernie Eels  restaurnat, the Big Easy--again good food.  We drove thru Franshoek on the way to Hermanus since it had been recommended and the trip is FANTASTIC.  (I am glad we had gotten used to driving on the left side by then thru the mountains!)  We went to several wineries, including the one owned by Ernie Eels (beautiful views!!) and some others.

\Hermanus was  a cute town, touristy, good for one night.  Beautiful seaside.

\Oudtshoorn was very interesting as a one time deal.  Not a must but good for once.  The Mooiplaas GH was a good accomodation.  Not much to do in the town.

Driving to Plettenberg Bay was nice. Enrico's Restaurant is about 15 mins out of town and a really nice place, highly recommended for beauty and food.  By the water.  Also stopped for oysters in Knysna, asking at the tourist office where good oysters were. (Quay Four), an informal place on the water with great oysters.  Driving to Port Elizabeth was uneventful.  We arrived late at the No 5 Boutique Art Hotel and left very early for our flight, but the hotel was magnificent and we wished we had spent a couple of nights there.

Flight to Joburg and onto Maun were fine.  At that point Desert and Deltas Safaris took over and WOW--we were treated royally and it was so interesting and lots of fun and LOADS of pix.  I'm glad you chose the combination of venues thru DDS, water, Okinavango Delta, Moremi, Xugana.  We saw lots of animals and birds.  The weather was great (a little too dry for them) but good (and hot) for us.

Victoria Falls:  Transits went well and timely.  We booked the sunset cruise thru the tour company that picked us up in Kusane to V Falls.   We went to Zambia and Zimbabwe sides of the falls.(walking and taxi)  There's a competition between the countries as to which side is better.  We loved both.  Zimbabwe gave a better overview but Zambia felt intimate and more into the falls.  My camera shorted out in the falls in  Zimbabwe, our last day :((( but it had put in 6 weeks of great pix.

All in all, a TERRIFIC trip which we would recommend to anyone (who can afford it :(  )  We want our adult children to go someday.  Our travel agency did a wonderful job of making sure we were well taken care of and getting us to absolutely great places.

Thank you!!!!

Barbara and Loren C

Review: Africa Family Safari, South Africa, Botswana, Okavango Delta, Cape Town, Robben Island, Wine Tours

The smallest details were covered in every aspect of our family’s trip to Cape Town, SA and the Okavango Delta private mobile safari in Botswana. Our safari travel company was tireless in their desire to provide the itinerary and arrangements that we specifically wanted. Organized itineraries molded to our interests, the choice of tour companies to provide the safari end of things were just the start of what we got from our travel company. Over the course of several months, our agent worked with us to take care of every single part of the trip that we needed organized. He knowledge base and experience stemming from his own experiences in Africa served as the springboard for giving us the trip we wanted. The four of us were completely satisfied with our three-week trip and would recommend this company to anyone who wants a trip they will remember forever. Our agent was most helpful when I was in the States trying to arrange tickets to Robben Island in Cape Town. I couldn’t complete the purchase online due to some website complication and he took over, booked the tickets for me, emailed me the tickets and added the cost to our invoice with no fuss.

South Africa, Botswana & Zimbabwe Luxury Travel Review: Cape Town, Kruger National Park, Okavango Delta, Wildlife, 2-Week Trip
Neil did an awesome job curating our 2-week trip. He helped us to minimize the travel time from Cape Town to our camp in Botswana (and onward to Zimbabwe and then back into Kruger Park area in SA).  Saw all the big animals in both Botswana and SA ... guides at "and Beyond" in Okavango Delta and in the game reserve in Sabi Sand respectfully were outstanding!

Luxury South Africa & Mozambique Tour Review: Cape Town, Benguerra Island, Safari, Wildlife & Local Cuisine, 10-Day Travel
The trip was a once in a lifetime type of experience. Sherilyn and the travel agency did a tremendous job catering to our requests and needs. Sherilyn spent hours on the phone with me as we finalized the itinerary spanning Cape Town, Safari at the game reserve in Kruger, and ending on the beach on Benguerra Island in Mozambique. My wife and I saw all the things we wanted to, and more! As a couple of animal lovers the trip was truly a blessing. We were able to hangout with penguins outside Cape Town; we saw the big 5 plus wild dogs, warthogs and much more on safari; and we swam with sharks, devil rays, turtles and lots of exciting marine life during our dives in Mozambique. The service was top notch. I even left my keys at the resort while on safari, and Sherilyn was able to coordinate a swift retrieval so that I had them before I returned home. I could not recommend Sherilyn and this travel company enough!
