Travel Review: Africa Safari, South Africa, Pretoria, Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, Stellenbosch, Sabi Sands Game Reserve

We are fairly seasoned travellers, and did a lot of homework before planning this trip. Nothing really prepared us for how fabulous it would be.  I'd say it was the trip of a lifetime, except that we fully intend to go back.

From first contact to last, this travel agency was a pleasure to deal with.  They were responsive to our ideas about what we wanted to do and see, and put together several itineraries which also included many suggestions that we had not thought of.

Ours was a private 3 week tour, beginning in Durban, then to the Sabi Sands game reserve (where we stayed at the Londolozi Founders Camp).  We took the Blue Train from Pretoria to Cape Town where we stayed a few days at the very lovely Cape Grace Hotel, and spent 3 wonderful days at the a wine estate near Stellenbosch.

Our travel agency arranged all of our transportation and excursions.  Everything went like clockwork:  all of our guides or transports were right on time, and without exception they were extremely pleasant and knowledgeable people.  We learned a lot about the country from each of them.

South Africa is a long way from Canada.  What made us feel very secure was that we had the personal cell phone number of our agent and knew that we could call her at any hour if something went awry.

The very best thing is that we never had to call!

I would recommend this tour company highly, and would definitely use them again,

Review: Luxury Africa Safari & Tour, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Zulu Nyala Safari Lodge, Cape Town

The following is what we wrote to the travel agency directly:

I am writing this in lieu of the survey and hope that we cover the questions.  First of all, THANK YOU!!!  Our agent was wonderful and accomodating in reference to the scheduling and the itinerary.  She was charming and friendly and was quick to respond to my questions and requests.

Upon arrival, the woman from our tour company was nice, accomodating.

The Faircity Hotel was just what we ordered, easy and near to a couple of things.  Our guide from the tour company was nice and informative.  I highly recommend the Cradle of Humankind and wish we had spent a little longer there but we arrived too late.  We went to the Sterkfontein Caves and would not recommend it for people of our age although it was interesting.  (We're not really cave people anyway)  The Apartheid Museum was good but not outstanding.  We had done a lot of reading before the trip.

Next, we got our car and drove to Hazyview. Oh, we added a GPS in the rental.  We had brought our own but you should recommwend to people that they make sure that their GPS has South Africa in it.  I had checked it at home trying to find Johannesburg and our GPS found it so I assumed they had S Africa, but somebody later told me that there is a Jburg in the US that GPS pick up! The driving wasn't bad at all, in fact, very good and easy even for us Americans.  The Tanamera Lodge was out of this world--beautiful and well managed.  We drove up to Bourne's Pothole, etc, etc, which shouldn't be missed. We stopped for lunch in Graskop on the way, a cute little touristy town.

Our next leg was a long trip from there to Swaziland.  Uneventful and easy to get thru the borders. Since we stopped at other craft places on the way, we didn't make it in time to see the candles or glass.  The Mountain Inn accomodation was OK.  We had dinner there amongst throngs of tourists but the food was good.

Then on to St Lucia Amazulu Lodge.  We had been given a note at the Mountain Inn that the front office closes at 6 and we could call when we got there.  Problem is--no phone!!  Luckily, some other tourists were there and let us in and told us where to park the car--and therre was a night watchman who found the key for us (non-English speaking)  We walked around St Lucia which is a nice town and walked out to the estuary.

We next drove to Hluhluwe the Zulu Nyala Safari Game Lodge--very good experience.  The rental car was picked up the next day.

Our transfer to Durban went smoothly as did the transfer from the CT airport.  We stayed at the Underberg Guesthouse, which we would recommend highly.  Fortunately, our in country contact had discovered that I had booked one day short there and scrambled for us and found another guesthouse for the last night--Wergelen--terrific!!!!!!!!

CT: Robben Island (good), Greenmarket Sq--fun market and lots of cafes around; District 6 Museum, a little disappointing but we're glad we went, the V and A Waterfront for a nice lunch.  Oh, and the Red and Blue buses which are hop on hop off buses touring CT and environs.  Oh, our trip to Cape Point which had been arranged by the Underberg was wonderful and beautiful, stopping by several small towns.  The penguins were delightful!  (There was a major fire on the Cape for a couple of days, which was really sad but interesting watching the helicopters trying to put it out with seawater)

Our car was delivered to Wergelen.  And we decided that we had too much stuff for the remainder of the trip so Fiona, the owner of Welgelen helped us find a shipper for our suitcases which should arrive in the PHL airport soon.(!?)

The drive to Stellenbosch and Franshoek was wonderful.  The River Manor Boutique Hotel was a great find, easy walk into town, good breakfast, nice staff. We went to Oppie Dorp, good food and not expensive and to Ernie Eels  restaurnat, the Big Easy--again good food.  We drove thru Franshoek on the way to Hermanus since it had been recommended and the trip is FANTASTIC.  (I am glad we had gotten used to driving on the left side by then thru the mountains!)  We went to several wineries, including the one owned by Ernie Eels (beautiful views!!) and some others.

\Hermanus was  a cute town, touristy, good for one night.  Beautiful seaside.

\Oudtshoorn was very interesting as a one time deal.  Not a must but good for once.  The Mooiplaas GH was a good accomodation.  Not much to do in the town.

Driving to Plettenberg Bay was nice. Enrico's Restaurant is about 15 mins out of town and a really nice place, highly recommended for beauty and food.  By the water.  Also stopped for oysters in Knysna, asking at the tourist office where good oysters were. (Quay Four), an informal place on the water with great oysters.  Driving to Port Elizabeth was uneventful.  We arrived late at the No 5 Boutique Art Hotel and left very early for our flight, but the hotel was magnificent and we wished we had spent a couple of nights there.

Flight to Joburg and onto Maun were fine.  At that point Desert and Deltas Safaris took over and WOW--we were treated royally and it was so interesting and lots of fun and LOADS of pix.  I'm glad you chose the combination of venues thru DDS, water, Okinavango Delta, Moremi, Xugana.  We saw lots of animals and birds.  The weather was great (a little too dry for them) but good (and hot) for us.

Victoria Falls:  Transits went well and timely.  We booked the sunset cruise thru the tour company that picked us up in Kusane to V Falls.   We went to Zambia and Zimbabwe sides of the falls.(walking and taxi)  There's a competition between the countries as to which side is better.  We loved both.  Zimbabwe gave a better overview but Zambia felt intimate and more into the falls.  My camera shorted out in the falls in  Zimbabwe, our last day :((( but it had put in 6 weeks of great pix.

All in all, a TERRIFIC trip which we would recommend to anyone (who can afford it :(  )  We want our adult children to go someday.  Our travel agency did a wonderful job of making sure we were well taken care of and getting us to absolutely great places.

Thank you!!!!

Review: Luxury Africa Family Safari, South Africa, Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Kruger National Park

I like to think of myself as a low maintenance girl, but the truth is, I’m not. And that’s ok. Work hard play hard.  So when I, with my parents, husband and daughter decided to take the trip of a lifetime to South Africa, every detail was really important.  We knew we wanted a mix of a Safari vacation with a visit to Capetown.  For the Safari, all I had heard about was Kruger National park and then nothing else.  My entire view of SA was really what I knew through friends I met during their visits to the US. I found this travel agent on Zicasso and, although she didn’t have that many reviews, she beat out two other well-known companies because of her attention to detail, her exceptional hotel recommendations and her anticipation of what we might need.

For example, when looking for Safari lodges to stay at, she asked whether we were ok being in the malaria zone because my daughter is 10 and parents are older.  I had no idea the park was in the malaria zone and none of the other travel agents mentioned this to me! Instead, our agent found us a fantastic 5 star lodge in Welgevonden reserve (Mhondoro Game Lodge) where we had the absolute best guide and staff ever. She also booked us on a charter flight from Johannesburg to the reserve and back, and then the domestic flights from Johannesburg to Capetown and back (we had already booked the international flights on our own).  During our trip, our agent even went online and checked us in for our flights! She also arranged for executive meet and greet services for all our intra-country transfers which helped a ton.  Our travel agent also did an excellent job of booking all road transfers for us and every driver was at least 10 minutes early - we never had to wait - and super friendly and helpful.   She told all hotels, restaurants, etc. that I was gluten-free, she was always available via WhatsApp during our vacation and we even met her for lunch while out for a day tour of Stellenbosch & the winelands - so nice to put her pretty face to a name.

All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend this agent and this travel team for any travel in Southern Africa (in addition to S. Africa, I believe she also does Botswana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, and some other southern African countries). This travel agent has set an extremely high standard and I wish I could just take her back home with me to organize the rest of my life!

Review: Luxury Africa Safari, South Africa & Tanzania, Zanzibar, Dulini Private Game Reserve, Franschhoek Wine Tours

Our safari travel company and our tour designer were the perfect choice for our 3+ week southern Africa vacation. We have used Zicasso referrals for several monthlong vacations, including Vietnam [2015], and this 27 day trip to southern Africa [2 Tanzania safari locations, Zanzibar Island for a beach stay, then into South Africa's Cape Town and Franschhoek in the Winelands, and finally several days the Dulini Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sands section of Kruger National Park. Our travel agent recommended terrific lodgings (save one, more on that later) and arrangements including transfers were flawless. We have already begun a conversation with her about a future trip to the Maldives or Seychelles. She wisely steered us to the right regions for safari for our January/February travel, knowledgeably aware of where to have the best viewing opportunities, she listened to our preferences and understood our style of travel perfectly.  I cannot recommend this agent and her safari travel company highly enough.

Travel Review: Luxury South Africa Safari with Zambia - Cape Town, Victoria Falls (Toka Leya Camp),...
Dear Reader, I am writing to unconditionally recommend the services of this travel company so that you may have the same exceptional experience that I was lucky enough to have by utilizing the services of this South Africa safari tour company. As a piece of background before the details of this letter, it is appropriate to detail that I work in the travel industry as the Vice President of Revenue Management and Operations for LeisureLink who owns and operates a niche lodging site called A Better Stay. My business caters to specialty lodging providers predominately in North America and the Caribbean. As part of my role, I do site visits at a majority of resorts and vacation rental properties as well as run a call center. The point I am making is that service is the utmost importance to me. Another point to frame this prior to diving in is that this trip was for four people from San Diego, CA traveling to South Africa. Now that the above formality is out of the way, I can move on to my experience with this South Africa safari travel company and the trip itself. From the get go, the travel company provided vastly superior service than any of the other providers we looked at for the trip. They provided knowledgeable recommendations on itinerary rather than simply a canned tour program. Deb from this South Africa safari travel company personally planned our trip. Would you rather have someone who is intimately familiar with the region plan the trip or some call center agent reading a script plan your trip? In fact, several of the planning discussions with Deb occurred when she was on site in South Africa scouting new lodges and locations. Deb's intimate knowledge of South Africa was obvious. Her knowledge made us comfortable. Upon receiving the completed itinerary and full trip proposal from Deb and her team, we realized how truly personalized of a trip we had requested. They came through with an itinerary that no other provider came close to matching in terms of quality, personalization and "soup to nuts" travel planning. We were planning on doing the Garden Route, but given that we live on the beach, Deb recommended we take advantage of the trip and visit Victoria Falls. All other operators, simply offered us a canned Garden Route package. Without their recommendation, we would have missed major highlights of the trip, including all of Zambia. Another item that was quite pleasing, if not shocking, is that the superlative service from the travel company continued even after they had secured our business. We made changes slight modifications to day tours and itinerary and they made it happen. Not only did they make it happen, but the the team was able secure surprise upgrades for us throughout. They made dinner reservations for us -- we got the best tables. We were on wait lists for upgrades (travel was during the World Cup) -- we got that even at the 5 Star Ivory Lodge at Lion Sands. We were even upgraded to first class on a couple of the flights within Africa. I could go on, but I assure more detail will come out in the description of my trip of a lifetime by this travel company. Now on to the trip... We were picked up by our guide at the airport and taken directly to the hotel for the early check in which pre-arranged by the travel company. Our guide, Brian, was phenomenal. The guide can often make or break a trip and Brian definitely made ours. He was great. His knowledge of the country, its history, and general pleasant nature really set us at ease. Brian adjusted any schedule based on our desires. I don't know if we will be able to travel again without a personalized guide of Brian's caliber. He was able to provide additional insight on every aspect of our stay in and around Capetown. Again, this travel company exemplifies a dedication to service and personalized travel with the highest quality guide. We stayed for 4 nights in Capetown at More Quarters ( Cape Cadogan ). The service was at the Cape Cadogan was fantastic. The entire team made us feel right at home. In Capetown, we went to the Waterfront, Table Mountain, the noon gun, Cape Flats, the Winelands, a World Cup game, and much more...The Hotel is in walking distance from great bars, clubs and restaurants. It is basically in the heart of the nightlife of Capetown, but on a quiet side street. It was perfect: a quiet, side street location, within a short walk of the heart of the city, just as we had requested. We were upgraded to the More Quarters for fully catered apartment style living rather than that of a simple hotel. The extra space in the More Quarters allowed us to relax and adjust to the massive time change. Another unexpected touch from this travel company were nightly dinner reservations at fantastic restaurants in the area. We received the best table at prime time at each restaurant, clearly exhibiting this travel company's partnership with the local businesses. The food and wine at each was top notch. We are an indecisive group, so having these made really added to the relaxation of our trip and the sense of vacation. From Capetown, we spent two nights in a quiet boutique guest house in Franschoek. The Winelands are beautiful and Brian arranged for several tastings at quality wineries with either private tastings or tours. We were thrilled with the Reserve tasting at Spier. We almost skipped Spier as it had the feel of a tourist trap with Cheetah petting, etc., but their reserve tasting was one of the best wines we have had in quite some time. We came home with the limit of Pinotage. They also arranged dinners at phenomenal restaurants: Reubens and The tasting room. The dinner at The Tasting Room was more of an experience than dinner. It was a 9 course blind tasting. They do 1 seating a night. Our dinner experience lasted 4 1/2 hours. Without this travel company, we would have missed our "dinner experience," which, by the way, we would recommend to any food and wine lover. We concluded our wine country experience with exceptional wine and cheese reserve tasting at Fairview . It was simply a great way to wind down before safari. We moved on to Sabi Sands. The Ivory Lodge at Lion Sands is unforgettable. We were thrilled to be able to experience Ivory as the original reservation was at the River Lodge at Lion Sands. The upgrade landed us at what has to be one of the most exclusive lodges in all of southern Africa, let alone South Africa. With only six units, you have a huge degree of privacy at Ivory Lodge. Upon arrival we did an abbreviated night game drive and saw 3 of the big 5 within 2 hours. After an hour of the morning game drive, we had seen the big five. Landon, our ranger, was great. Not only did we see the Big 5, but we experienced them. We would stay with the animals for at least 15-20 minutes to see how they behave. This is not a drive by safari. It was beyond expectations. We also saw giraffe, zebra, hippo, and many more. Breakfast and happy hour in the bush are not to be missed. Ivory Lodge provides the utmost in service. We had in room dinner and massage. We also did a bar-b-que where we were able to select the tasting menu. Food was fantastic (we are all on a diet regimen now). We had intended to stay somewhere else, but stayed here based on Deb's recommendation. This place is unbeatable. From Ivory Lodge, we moved to Johannesburg for a 1 night stop over. The travel company Selected 93 Jan Smuts for our stop over. This guest house provides the ultimate in comfort and friendly service. Karen, the owner, made us feel like we were well and truly at home. Given that this was just a stop over, we didn't really explore, rather had a quiet dinner and got ready for Zambia and Victoria Falls . Upon arrival in Zambia, our driver met us and transported us to Toka Leya -- another lodge with impeccable service. Our itinerary was planned once we got there: Lunch followed by a river cruise with sunset cocktails followed by dinner under the stars. Day two had us at Victoria Falls. What a sight to behold. After getting drenched during the tour of the Falls we went to the Victoria Falls Bunji Company. They only take cash, so be prepared. We didn't have the cash on hand to bunji, but our guide had the cash to allow us to zipline. This extra touch from the guide allowed us to add to our truly incredible. It is not every day that you can zipline from country (Zambia) to country (Zimbabwe) with Victoria falls as the back drop. We elected a massage over lunch. The spa services at Toka Leya are provided in a room directly on the Zambezi . The massages were absolutely fantastic. From there, we closed out our stay with another sunset cruise down the Zambezi , where we saw several hippo and crocodile. My only regret with Toka Leya is that we didn't stay longer. In my opinion two nights is simply not enough. We will be back to do the rafting trip down the canyon of the Zambezi . This was truly a trip of a lifetime. Every single item we requested from this South Africa safari travel company was met with a smile. Every accommodation they arranged was perfect. Guides and drivers were always prompt and knowledgeable. We did not wont for anything. I cannot fathom this trip coming of near as well had we worked with anyone else or been stuck a standardized tour. The travel company's team more than delivered on everything and truly went above and beyond. We will definitely use this travel company's services when we return with our entire family in the future. Without question, I recommend their services to anyone traveling to South Africa or southern Africa in general and I hope that other travelers are able to yield the same satisfaction as I from the services of this travel company.

Travel Review: Luxury Africa Safari, South Africa, Mozambique, Cape Town, Robben Island, Kruger National Park, Victoria Falls

Our trip was planned by this agent and her travel company. We loved the accommodations she chose for us. Our safari at Londolozi was the highlight of our entire trip. We were so glad we got to experience that particular camp. Our private driver/guide in Cape Town was wonderful.

I would say that our driver/guide to the Drakensburg mountains was only fair but we enjoyed our day. The weather did not co-operate so that may have flavoured our opinion.

All transfers and travel connections were easy and well-planned. Our agent was very responsive and answered all of our questions.

We were extremely pleased with our trip to South Africa.
