Madrid - City Highlights Tour and Parque El Retiro

In the morning, as castanets echo in the distance, you will meet your private guide in front of your accommodation for a tour of many of the city's best and boldest highlights. If you have heard that all roads lead to Rome, then perhaps you have not heard Madrid's version of the story. You will set off just beyond your hotel at the Plaza del Sol, which is otherwise known as Kilometer 0 and from which all major highways in Spain originate. As the clock tower of Puerta del Sol chimes on the hours, Madrilenos are reminded of a Spanish New Year's tradition, in which families celebrate the Twelve Grapes of the new year as the famous clock strikes midnight.

Next, you will continue to the skyscrapers and flashing lights of Gran Via, which is Madrid's shopping mecca. You can peruse lavish shops and take pictures along this hectic avenue. Then, you will transform into royalty as you enter the gates of the Royal Palace, which is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family. Throughout the afternoon, you will tour the ornate, gold-leafed halls of this opulent edifice. Then, you will step outside the palace walls to tour the meticulously manicured gardens that are complete with elegant white statues, tepid water basins, and beautifully formed hedges.

Later this afternoon, you will cross town to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, where you can see the extensive art collections of the famed Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, including Picasso's original Guernica. In the evening, you will wander through the beautiful Parque El Retiro. The scenic rose gardens and grassy green pastures offer residents a respite from the concrete jungle of city life. Horse and buggy carriages will clop along the boulevards of Paseo de la Argentina and Avenida de Mexico, and you can step inside a charming paddle boat to glide along Retiro Pond and admire the charming foliage at every turn.

Detailed Description

Andalucia is not only coveted for its aesthetic charm but because it is steeped in a captivating history that spans thousands of years. Christian, Moorish, and Jewish communities have laid claim in each of the region's major cities as is evidenced in the exquisite cathedrals, mosques, and synagogues that flank the major plazas and narrow alleyways to this day. You will wind past verdant gardens, through prestigious museums, and around lavish palaces as you come to know these beautiful and critical historical markers. As the sun reaches its peak temperature each day, do as the Spanish do and indulge in a refreshing siesta. Then, you can sit back with a glass of tinto vino in the evening as you look out on the glowing horizon.

You will begin your journey in Madrid, which is the nation's capital. Here, you will live like royalty in your five-star hotel and meander through the Royal Palace, which will be just a short walk away. You will stroll through Parque El Retiro and keep up with the busied pace of life along Gran Via. Then, you will venture to Cordoba, where the fascinating history of La Mezquita is hidden within the ornate mosque-cathedral threshold. You will indulge in the Jewish Quarter before continuing to Sevilla. Here, you will admire the careful tilework in Plaza de España and get your adrenaline pumping as you run with the bulls inside Plaza de los Toros. This event only occurs in July, so should you be here during the festival, then you will have the opportunity to partake in this very unique and exciting experience.

Then, you will venture to the last-standing stronghold of the Moorish Empire in the charming city of Granada, which is where you will summit to the top of La Alhambra palace and the picturesque gardens of Generalife. Delectable tapas await you in the charming city center before you wind through the Sierra Nevada mountain range to the quaint villages of Las Alpujarras. In the evening, you will enjoy an authentic flamenco show in the cave-style homes of Albaicin. Malaga's beaches and superb Picasso Museum are the final destinations along your Andalucian adventure.

Spain Vacation Review: Andalucia, Seville, Cordoba, Alhambra, Mezquita, Alcazar, Picasso Museum, Malaga, 14-Day Trip

We just returned from two fantastic weeks in Andalucia. Zicasso's travel designer listened carefully to our travel preferences, provided important advice, helped with the logistics, and selected excellent guides for us in Seville and Córdoba. The most memorable part of our travel was when he guided us through the Alhambra.

Spain Travel Review: Madrid, Mallorca, Granada, Toledo, Barcelona, Horse Show, Horseback Riding, 10 Nights

We were very happy to be matched with Zicasso’s travel consultant to arrange our travel plans. His expertise and thoughtfulness were obvious through every detail, and his suggestions proved to be the right ones in nearly every case. The transfers made the travel stress-free and smooth. The drivers were professional and most engaging, with only one slight mix-up on the location when departing Mallorca, but this caused no issue.

We returned to Zicasso because of our wonderful experience they arranged for our trip to Italy a few years ago, and this experience was equally fantastic. It was very assuring for my wife and I to receive the notices and updates from our travel consultant while our travel was in progress. He was prompt and detailed from start to finish. My wife speaks Spanish very well and loved the opportunity to interact and rebuild her vocabulary.

All hotels selected were excellent. The service quality was a standout at the hotel on Plaza de las Cortes in Madrid and the resort on Carrer de les Molins in Mallorca, in particular. The accommodation in Granada was beautiful, although just for feedback, the room location was not so good, having a full window wall at nearly ground level looking at people at a cafe — which meant keeping the blackout drapes pulled the entire time — and, consequently, a little noisy. That is just meant as a note if you book this hotel in the future. The lower levels at the back of the hotel should be avoided. That probably had more to do with what was available at check-in time, but just a note.

As we mentioned to our travel consultant during the trip, all four private tour guides we had were wonderful and very knowledgeable. The day trip to Toledo was a standout, as was the Alhambra in Granada. The horse show at the Spanish riding school fulfilled my wife's wish over many years and it didn't disappoint. Our guide in Granada stayed with us nearly an hour beyond her time (even though we mentioned the time to her). She replied that she enjoyed spending time with those who appreciated her city – and we did. We enjoyed her historical perspective very much and she seemed to enjoy it too. Our other guides were all terrific and it was evident they all enjoy their work and are proud of their cities and heritage.

We loved the horseback riding at the ranch with our guide in Mallorca. The staff there went above and beyond when my wife lost a bracelet on the trail (unknown where or when). We were nearly back at the hotel when we got a call that one of their staff had found the bracelet. The manager offered and dropped off the bracelet at the hotel that night on her way home, before we left for Barcelona. Great people!

The crowning point was ending our travel at the Sagrada Família at sunset — awe-inspiring! We really don't have any complaints or things we would change. There is much we would add, however, had we had more time (and money).

Thank you, Zicasso, and Zicasso’s travel company, for helping make a great memory for my wife and me.

Spain Trip Review: Seville, 10 Days

Zicasso's trip expert was patient and responsive to our numerous requests and persistent in thoroughly organizing the trip. All planned aspects of the trip were carried out professionally and as scheduled. Recommended restaurants proved to be great choices.

For scheduled transfers, we were met by courteous, helpful drivers, with clean, comfortable vans. The drivers knew exactly where we were to be delivered and, on appropriate occasions, showed amazing skill in navigating the complex maze of narrow streets and tight corners of some of the old city centers.

Selected hotels were prepared for our arrival, provided clean, comfortable rooms, and served delicious breakfasts. Hotel staffs were consistently friendly and helpful. The staff of our hotel in Sevilla were especially noteworthy for their efforts to make our stay as enjoyable as possible and, even more, for their quick response to a medical emergency experienced by one of our group.

Tour guides were absolutely outstanding. Each was thoroughly knowledgeable of their tour subjects, able to field our numerous questions, and readily adapted the tours to our expressed interests.

Overall, a well-planned, well-executed, and most enjoyable trip.

Spain Vacation Review: Madrid, Granada, Seville, Barcelona, Costa Brava, Toledo, Cordoba, Flamenco, Sailing, Museums, Cathedrals, 11-Day Trip

My husband, our two adult sons, and myself had the pleasure of going to Spain for 11 nights. We didn’t know much about the country, so we relied on Zicasso’s travel specialist to guide us. From the start, she explained the history, culture, food, etc.

We traveled to Madrid, Granada, Seville, Barcelona, and Costa Brava! We also took day trips to Toledo and Córdoba. We had excellent tour guides and drivers. Our trip flowed nicely, as we were on the go a lot of the time.

It was a trip of a lifetime for our family. We looked forward to the tapas, paellas, Jamón Ibérico, gazpacho, empanadas, rabo de toro, and, of course, the seafood every evening. The Spanish people were great and some we’ll never forget!

We learned so much about the ancient and early history, including the Roman conquest through the Medieval and early modern history. We were taking in this information all week, including the Prado Museum, the Picasso Museum, and the Dalí Theatre-Museum!

A simple family moment was sitting on our rooftop in Seville by the pool looking out at this beautiful city, which was difficult to leave!
