Day 1

A Magical First Safari in Lake Manyara

Your safari adventure starts with the rowdy sound of hornbills, great flocks of birds covering the entrance gate to Lake Manyara. As you enter a thick forest the cacophony dies down, supplanted by an assortment of the park's over 400 bird species. Each turn takes you deeper, Africa's unique animal world slowly revealing itself as you meander around corners. Baboons appear, prancing around and impishly staring at the safari truck. Now watch an elephant clearing a track with its ferocious dismantling of trees. Impala and oryx stand watchful, always alert because the predators in Lake Manyara have some unique talents.

Glance at a tree and you might not see it. Even when you're barely meters away they can easily be missed. But a twitching tail alerts your eyes and now it all seems so obvious. A tree-climbing lion lounges on a branch, its eyes intensely focused on you. Along with Tarangire, this is one of the few places in the world where lions live in trees. They enjoy the shade and breeze up here, and it's always good to have an aerial vantage point of the dinner menu. Zebras cover the lake's flood plains, feeding on the lush grass that makes this an oasis for wandering herds. Long necked gerenuks are careful about where they eat, arching back on their hind legs and stretching for the leaves of lower branches. They must always be cautious, because if it's not the lions that they must be wary of then it's the stealthy leopards.

Lake Manyara offers the perfect safari introduction because of its compact collection of different habitats. After emerging from the forest, the savannah brings open expanses of elephant and giraffe. Wallowing in the shallows, large pods of hippos throw their weight around the lake. There is also a quiet serenity here, making it easy for everyone to settle into the gentle rhythm of safari. Exploring these untamed lands is not about charging around hoping for glimpses of brilliance. It's all about moving slow, admiring the beauty of the environment, and allowing nature's great theater to ineradicably play out before your eyes. In the late afternoon you'll enjoy a visit to Maasai cultural sights before a leisurely dinner at your luxury tented camp.

Detailed Description

Northern Tanzania is perhaps Africa's greatest safari region, an untamed land where indelible scenes defy the eyes. It revels in diversity, each park providing a different ecosystem and an unforgettable cast of wildlife. Over six days you'll visit four different parks, immersing yourself in a natural world that goes beyond anything you might have seen in documentaries. Elephants wander past ancient acacia trees in Tarangire, black rhinos plod through the savannah of Ngorongoro, and big cats stalk prey on the endless plains of the Serengeti. Every game drive is different, but it always combines classic, sought after scenes with personal moments and surprise. Everybody remembers the lion that lounged by your safari truck. But nobody else saw the cute interaction between two hippos beside the lake. These six days offer a complete safari package. It's a thrilling adventure, but one that's packed full of charm and serene moments.

Lake Manyara is the perfect first stop, a compact park that offers hippo infested lakes and giraffe covered floodplains. Bird song flutters through the forest but this is no place for a quiet picnic. Baboons impishly roam while tree-climbing lions wait silently on the branches. From here you head to the Serengeti and three days exploring the grassland of this iconic national park. Two million mammals maraud around this land during the Great Migration, the wildebeest carefully tracked by a smorgasbord of predators. At all times of year the Serengeti contains a remarkable concentration of wildlife. And it's all easily spotted, from lounging lion prides to the antelopes that dot the plains.

With this unique itinerary you'll be staying in luxury tented camps that effortlessly combine comfort with a total immersion in nature. Sounds perforate through the thick canvas tents, wildlife wanders just meters away, and there is an encompassing sense of freedom and adventure. After the Serengeti you'll descend into the remarkable world of Ngorongoro, an inactive volcanic crater that contains six diverse habitats. Black-maned lions, majestic rhinos, giant elephant bulls, large hippo pods; it's all visible and sometimes within one sweep of the eyes. Concluding the safari experience is a trip through the ancient acacia trees of Tarangire, one that reveals the interaction of elephant herds numbering up to 300 strong. Expect to be wowed over these six days, and expect nature's great theater to play out before your eyes.

Tanzania Group Africa Safari Review: Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara Sunsets
There are no words for the incredible trip to Tanzania from which we have just returned, all planned to perfection by our travel planner at this travel company. Our guide was with us from start to finish and showed us amazing sites and animals - its hard to believe there is a better guide in Tanzania than ours! I would highly recommend both our planner and guide who made sure our trip left nothing to be desired. Looking back, there is not one thing I would change if I could do it all over again (which I would in a heartbeat). Our trip began with two nights in Arusha getting acclimated before heading out on safari. We spent most of the full day we had in Arusha at an amazing place called Jifundishe, a library, school, community center and much more that does incredible work to help the local community - I would highly recommend a visit there. Next, we headed to Tarangire National Park, where we spent about a day and a half exploring the abundant wildlife, including at our beautiful resort, Maramboi Tented Camp (two nights), where the zebras, wildebeests and gazelles hung around right outside our rooms and where we could watch gorgeous sunsets over Lake Manyara as we enjoyed happy hour each evening. After Tarangire, we heading toward Ngorongoro Crater where we enjoyed two nights at the beautiful and peaceful Plantation Lodge, relaxing by the pool in the afternoons after a full day in the crater. Next, we headed to the gorgeous Serengeti where we stayed for four nights in the spectacular Roving Bushtops camp, a very intimate and special experience. Our group of 7 made up half of the camp of beautiful tents in a serene atmosphere and we were well taken care of by the most attentive staff, who anticipated our every need (even before we did!). The food at all of our accommodations was beyond expectation in both quality and quantity. We were sad to leave this beautiful country but hope to return one day in the future.

Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia & South Africa Review, Luxury Africa Safari, Nairobi, Serengeti, Cape Town, Tarangire National Park

You could not have planned the trip better. It was fantastic! Our safari driver from Rangers was great - again could not of been better. He pushed every day for us to see everything possible. Hes fun and incredibly knowledgeable and has a great command of the English language. You were right to schedule one day in Nairobi - so glad we did not change it to two days. We saw the last of the Big 5 - the black rhino in Kenya. We loved all of our accommodations and the people are so friendly, polite and helpful. We saw the Great Migration in Tanzania. We would not of changed one thing. People from other tour agencies were dissapointed that when they arrived in Kenya when we did as all of the Wildebeest had already migrated to Tanzania. What you scheduled for us was perfect. I do think that Tanzania is not well known but Kenya is to the average American like us. If it wasn't for you we would of never known about Tanzania. Tanzania has it all - except the black rhino at the Govenor's Camp- no need to even go to Kenya but I did want to go the the Elephant and Giraffe orphanages. We loved Capetown, the shark cage trip and the tour operator was wonderful. The 1/2 day Capetown trip was great. We went on the historic Capetown walking tour at 11:00 after we checked out. We added the Olduvai museum at the crater to our trip.  We had a wonderful time and saw so much in 17 days including traveling from the East Coast;  Arusha, Tarangire National park,  Ngorongoro crater, Central Serengeti - Turner Springs, Norther Serengeti - Kokatonde, Masai - Mara, Nairobi, Victoria Falls and Capetown. A trip of a lifetime.

Luxury Tanzania & South Africa Safari Review: Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, 29-Day Trip
Best organized trip we've ever taken. Every day of the 29 day trip went perfect. We did a 9 day trip in the Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti Park, Tanzania. We think and were told by the different lodges that we stayed at, that  we had the best guide in the park.  Couldn't agree more. Two people made this trip so good our trip planner at this travel company and our guide. We had several conversations organizing the trip with the planner who made several suggestions that made it such a great trip.  Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about all the animals, plants and places we went to.

Tanzania, Rwanda Luxury Vacation Review: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, Safari Experience

Zicasso’s travel agency gave us a mind-blowing experience. We've never had a trip where nothing went wrong. Thanks to their hard work and our in-country hosts, our trip was flawless. We had lots of questions and ideas. They worked to incorporate them into the package. This really showed how much they knew about Africa, as well as what works and what might not.

Our driver/guide for Tanzania was great. His encyclopedic knowledge of everything was astounding. From the little beetles and the birds to the Big Five and beyond, he knew it all and knew everyone. This really elevated our trip experience.

We started in Arusha, then set out on our adventure. We stayed in Tarangire National Park, drove through Lake Manyara, the Ngorongoro Crater, and then on to the central and northern Serengeti.

Our driver made sure we saw what I think was every animal in Tanzania. Each encounter was an experience and up close! Thanks!

The tented camps in Tarangire and the central and northern Serengeti were wonderful. While a little outdated, the locations were perfect. The staff at each camp were over the top. Awesome job. We planned this trip as my gift for turning 60. Our tour operator made sure everyone knew this, and at each camp, the cooks baked a small cake to recognize this. What an unexpected surprise. I cannot express enough gratitude to everyone for making the camps so special. The food was fabulous.

We also had a morning balloon flight over the northern Serengeti. This too was amazing, watching the sun rise floating silently over the Mara River, listening to the animals.

From the northern Serengeti it was on to Rwanda for gorillas. Again, the travel agency went above and beyond. Our guide in Rwanda was a font of knowledge and knew many of people wherever we went. The hotels in Rwanda were small and exceptional.

We had two days of gorilla treks. We were extremely blessed to have our guide on both days. We saw 35 gorillas in what I call a full 3D, up-close experience. I had wanted to see mountain gorillas ever since I was young and read about Dian Fossey. The gorilla experience really moved us. Such gentle creatures. We will remember this encounter for the rest of our lives.

I highly recommend the travel company. We had a wonderful adventure and want to return.

Safari Review: Luxury Kenya & Tanzania Safari, Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangeri, Maasai Mara
The accommodations were wonderful as were the destinations Alana from this African safari tour operator helped us select. We really appreciated the diversity of the places we visited and stayed at: Amboselli, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangeri, and two concessions in the Maasai Mara. Each park and each camp had something special to offer. One camp had only luxury 7 tents, one had 40 raised tents . Some were in between (with 15-20 individual units). Not all accommodations were tented... as Alana selected some luxury smaller lodge type properties too. Each was different and had a unique personality which only added to the trip. Whether it was the view of Kilimanjaro, the resident warthogs, the sneaky monkeys, the elephants that visited the water hole for an evening drink, the gourmet food, the incredible service, the night game drive, the walking safari, the picnic breakfast or the Maasai spotters.. each facility and each destination was perfect.

Tanzania Luxury Family Tour Review: Safari, Arusha, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Tarangire, Wildlife, Cooking Class, Culture

I have just returned from a safari to Tanzania with my husband and 13 year old grandchild.  The trip was arranged by Melanie at our travel agency. We began the trip in Arusha and from there went to Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and then to the Serengeti. Melanie has a deep knowledge of Africa and is a super planner and took care of every detail to make this a most memorable adventure.  She asked many questions about what we were looking for in a safari and proposed lots of alternative plans until we fine tuned our choices.   She was very solicitous  of our specific needs.  My husband has a bad knee, Melanie made sure each accommodation we had was in the center of the action and required no extra walking.  She even arranged for a little stepstool for each vehicle so my husband would not need to struggle to step up into the car.   Melanie guided me in arranging our frequent flyer flights and an overnight stay in Amsterdam even though she was not receiving any commission on these arrangements.  She advised me in regard to securing a Visa for Tanzania and making sure I had no issues in taking my grandson out of the USA without a hitch.  She went over and above from beginning to end in putting this vacation together for us.

We stayed in a variety of accommodations. At Tarangire we stayed at a super luxurious lodge that sits atop a ridge with a view that can only be described as spectacular.  We spent our days on safari with our guide who was expert at spotting and identifying the animals as we encountered them.  He was a font of knowledge, and my grandson was enthralled with what he knew and the game we were seeing.  He was an exceptional guide and we were lucky to have him for 5 days.  Our next stop was a hotel which overlooked Manyara Lake.  Not only did we explore the National Park, but it was special because Melanie arranged for a lesson in the art of cooking  African style for my grandson once she learned he was a budding chef.  We also took a tuk tuk tour of the local village to get a sense of the local culture.  From there we drove to the Ngogongoro Crater.  Melanie’s knowledge of the area was key because she selected a tented camp that overlooked the crater which allowed us to be one of the first safari vehicles to enter the Crater the following morning.  The Crater was quite an experience and we were awed by its beauty and abundance of game.  Again our guide was most able.  No trip to Tanzania is complete without viewing and understanding the migration.  Instead of a day long drive to view the migration, Melanie arranged for a small plane to fly us to Grumeti, in a seamless transfer we were picked up by our new guide who took us to the a luxurious moving tented camp in Serengeti.  What a place!  In our daily drives we were able to view the migrations and witness a multitude of animals who were both the hunters and the hunted.  Our guide had encyclopedic knowledge about everything surrounding us.  Our grandson was in heaven and used his camera to record over 1,000 photos.  We made a lifetime of memories together.

Throughout out trip Melanie kept tabs on us, always knowing where we were and providing advice.  She provided a heads up on changes in the airline schedule and was always available for a What’s App call.  We had a wonderful adventure in Tanzania and highly recommend Melanie and the travel company.
