Buenos Aires – City Charm

Buenos Aires has often been referred to as the “Paris of South America,” due to the resplendent 19th-century streets framed with elegant architecture. Boulevards shaded with marvelous trees contain cafes and bakeries filled with the aromas of fresh espresso and buttery puff pastries. Your flight lands at Ministro Pistarini International Airport, and you meet your private transfer at baggage claim. The rosy hues of the façade at the presidential mansion of Casa Rosada adorn the 16th century Plaza de Mayo. The square extends for two full blocks and retains an important position in the history of the city dating back to the Spanish arrival, along with Argentina’s uprising against Spain in 1810.

The striking figure of Palacio Barolo, located near the end of Avenida de Mayo soars above the surrounding buildings, retaining its title as one of South America’s tallest structures. The palacio was completed in 1923 with the intention of serving as a symbol for Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy. The building has 22 floors to coincide with the epic poem’s 22 stanzas. The interior takes visitors on a journey through the far reaches of Dante’s imagination while climbing to the top of the tower to reach paradise, an observation deck offering a 360 degree view of the remarkable city from a height of 328 feet above the streets, allowing you the perfect introduction to the splendors of Buenos Aires’ culture, past and present.

Argentina, Chile, Uruguay Travel Review: Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Montevideo, Santiago, Local Cuisine, Wine, Culture

We had the perfect trip, which lived up to the purpose of wine, food, and colonial culture. We covered lots of destinations in Buenos Aires, including La Boca, with outstanding steakhouses, tango shows, and a food and wine-tasting city tour. We also crossed Rio de la Plata to picturesque UNESCO-listed town Colonia del Sacramento.

We visited Montevideo and inviting wineries, then flew to Mendoza for the best Malbec wine tasting, with the spectacular snow-covered Andes as the backdrop. Then it was on to Santiago de Chile, with more visits to bodegas serving exceptional wines and food. We also toured the coast to visit another UNESCO city, Valparaiso, and adjacent Viña del Mar.

This was a trip of a lifetime. Zicasso’s agent organized it perfectly and was always available via WhatsApp for any questions.

Luxury Chile Trip Review: Valparaiso, Santiago, Viña del Mar, Caleta Portales, Cajón del Maipo, Vineyard Visit, Wine Tasting
We had a guided tour of the Valparaiso and Santiago area March 6-10. I must begin the review by stating that a severe attack on her back, hip, and leg nerves/muscles debilitated Elaine to a great extent during the duration of this tour. The cause was unknown, but she has had similar attacks in the past, but not to the extent that she had to use a wheelchair. Needless to say, this situation severely impacted our enjoyment of the tours, and indeed kept her in the hotel room for an entire day. I must also add that Elaine is the chronicler of their trips, and so our review of this tour is somewhat truncated and cursory in detail. One thing we must add, the injury to Elaine occurred just a day or so before beginning our Chile tour so advance notice regarding her dependence on the wheelchair was unexpected to all and had not been considered in the planning of the trip. We understand the hardship this placed on everyone and appreciated the considerations that were afforded us, and apologize for the extra work and stress it placed on all those helping us. The trip planned out by Veronica was excellent and responsive to our requests, and we thank her for a job well done.Nonetheless, we got to see a lot in the area and did enjoy many aspects of the trip. To recap, we were picked up by our guide for Valparaiso (we didn’t get his name) and driver. We did not connect with them until about 30 minutes after our pick-up time. We don’t know if this was unfamiliarity by the cruise company or the gentlemen as to the proper place to pick up people. But we were soon loaded up and began our overview of the city. We really enjoyed the unique and fascinating culture of the city, and were particularly fascinated by the layout of the colorful houses all built along the signature hills that characterize the city. Elaine was particularly taken by the graffiti/murals that seemingly decorated  every structure in town – I could easy have enjoyed a tour of nothing but the vast variety of that artwork. Elaine was even able to very painfully get to and take a ride (with lots of assistance) on one of the characteristic funiculars.Unfortunately, those same hills kept Elaine from seeing more of the city since she could not tolerate any walking, much less on hills. So, she was stuck in the car while the guide and Doug explored the many neighborhoods of the diverse city. This was particularly unpleasant as some of their excursions lasted a significant period of time and Elaine had nothing to do with no wi-fi and the driver’s lack of English (and Elaine’s lack of Spanish). All the sitting was also not good for Elaine’s back. We were happy that Doug could visit the communities and he took lots of photos to give Elaine a glimpse of them. It was the same situation at Caleta Portales where Doug got a look at the fish market and brought the smell of it back to Elaine! While it was very limited, we did enjoy getting a glimpse of this unique city.We did stop at the Fonck museum where we were able to see the authentic Mooi in its grounds, but we could not tour the museum as Elaine was incapable and Doug was too tired. We went on to Viña del Mar, which was strikingly different in character than Valparaiso but provided comfort and ease of getting around in the wheelchair for Elaine. The hotel was modern and spacious, which is what Elaine needed. They also loaned us a wheelchair for the duration of our visit. We were very glad that we had opted to stay in this hotel with its great ocean view since the second day Elaine was forced to stay in their room in bed.The second day was Doug and the guide/driver alone as they hit some of the local communities. Again, it was good that Doug was able to get to these sites and bring photos back to Elaine. He did say that the closure days of all venues, such as the Pablo Neruda, should be checked before getting there. It was a little odd that the guide was not sure if he was to be our guide for only the first day or both days.On the third day, we transferred to Santiago and met our other guide/driver. We did an overview driving tour of this huge city and got a feel for the diversity of the city neighborhoods. The difference between the “feel” of Valparaiso and Santiago was striking. Mid-day we checked into the hotel in Santiago, which gave us a break and a chance to get a loaner wheelchair from the hotel. The hotel is an older property and thus was harder for us to navigate with the wheelchair. We took a break on their rooftop bar for a snack and a drink even though we found their menu quite limited and rather overpriced.. Afterwards we went to the Pre-Columbian museum, which was of particular interest to us. We spend a lot of time in the museum which was very convenient for the wheelchair and which was quite empty of other tourists and a great help to us. The guards were considerate and helpful navigate the museum easily. We enjoyed this stop immensely. We were tired and a bit concerned since it was Day of the Woman with a parade, either that day or the next, that was scheduled to be held in the vicinity of our hotel. To avoid any issues, we went on back to the hotel. Unfortunately our room was very hot at 26-27C. We mentioned this to guest services, but when we returned to our room after giving maintenance a chance to work the issue, we found the room just as hot but a FAN had been added (which provided no relief since apparently the Air Conditioning was not working and was not fixed). We asked for water since there was none in the room, and they told us it was in the mini-bar which we had searched for and could not find. They explained it was in a second closet that looked like an electrical closet to us!The next day, our guide drove us outside the city (and that takes a long time). We enjoyed the drive down the Cajon del Maipo along the river and valley. It was a pleasant drive and we started to climb into the Andes toward our destination, Yeso Reservoir. The water was a gorgeous blue color and we drove along it. Unfortunately, the road that bordered it was also the one that the big gravel trucks had to use. This was some tricky driving on the narrow road, but our guide was a good driver with quick reflexes, which we were to find out more than once in this land of crazy drivers! Our guide talked us into lunch at Casa Bosque which was a very interesting and very popular restaurant. We soon knew why as it had great food and a big clientele to prove it! Our guide had asked the hotel concierge to get us a reservation at the popular Leguria restaurant, which was just down the block from the hotel and an easy wheelchair away. We got there at an early hour and enjoyed a quiet dinner before returning to our hot hotel room.We checked out of the hotel and journeyed down the Maipo Valley on our way to a wine tasting at a Vineyard. This is where our guide really earned his Merit Badge from us. The vineyard was very pleasant, quiet, and a nice break from the traffic of the City, but it was not made for wheelchairs. He was an impressive trooper as he pushed Elaine over cobblestones, gravel roads, stairs and ramps -  all with not a murmur of complaint! We enjoyed the tasting and the break it afforded him. Our guide was the best part of our tour and he gets our highest thanks as he was simply a terrific asset in every way.Getting back into town, we went to Met Park with its iconic hill with the Christ statue very like Sugarloaf in Rio. At this point, Elaine was able to do short bits of walking and so was able to get to the cable car and ride it up the hill. There was a nice area at the top with gorgeous views of the City. Here we took a rest and our guide talked us into a Motte(?), dried peach drink that was very refreshing. After that we were able to get down on the Teleferico with its great views of the City.  This took us to time to return to the hotel where we had a few minutes to collect our bags and take a very fast shower and get a change of clothes for our trip to the airport. It was blissfully close by and we got there in record time. We parted with our guide and thanked him for his exemplary service and showing us a good time.

Argentina & Chile Travel Review: Valparaiso, Casablanca Valley Wineries, Puntas Arenas, Perito Moreno Glacier, Iguazu Falls

Our trip started on November 7, 19 with our first stop at Santiago del Chile.  Our guide (from a local agency) spent two wonderful days with us. Even though our visit at Valparaiso had to be cancelled due to some street riots, the travel specialist has secured a visit at a winery in Casablanca Valley, as well as a winery where we had a tour, vine testing and a very good lunch.

Our next stop was at Puntas Arenas, from which a minivan had taken us to the Hotel in the Las Torres Del Paine .  The hotel and the staff were wonderful, very attentive and provided all services with big smiles.  Our first hike to Las Torres took us a whole day but what a view we did experience ... we will never forget the Las Torres view and excellent guides hotel had provided.

From Las Torres the minivan had taken us to El Calafate where next morning we were met by our guide - a wonderful lady, very experience and knowledgable tourist guide - we highly recommend her services. We spent a day visiting Glaciar Perito Moreno.  We spent two night at a Boutique Hotel, a very classy yet modern hotel.

From El Calafate we took a short flight to Ushuaia, where we stayed at a hotel.  Our trip to see the penguins and other water animals was very well organized (the captain of the boat could wear a more professional cloths but then he was a captain......).

From Ushuaia we traveled to Iguazu via Buenos Aires.  The Suites Hotel was spectacular; it was situated literary in the middle of jungle with lavish green vegetation in front of our balcony.  The Iquazu Falls are impossible to describe, one needs to see them from both Argentinian and Brazilian sides. Our private guide was superb - extremely intelligent, knowledgable, resourceful and very helpful - we highly recommend his services.

Our last stop was at Buenos Aires where we met our guide, a very educated city guide.  We had a wonderful time with her and  highly recommend her services as well.  The Tango Show was superb, not to mentioned a very tasteful meal.

We, Peter and I have planed this trip for a long time and with your help it was the trip we will never forget.

In Buenos Aires we met with our travel planner from this travel company; she was interested in our comments and suggestions with regards to provided itinerary. It is always better to provide more details rather than less or information which is  not quantifiable.  For example: "At appropriate time."..... rather than around 3 pm the van (it is important also to specify what van?) will pick you up from the airport.  This example is for the Puntas Arenas airport where nobody was waiting for us......

Overall, our trip was fantastic and we will always remember it.  Thank you for making it happen.

I have already reached out to your office for the itinerary for our next trip to Japan in September 2020.

Argentina, Chile Luxury Travel Review: Buenos Aires, Chacras de Coria, Mendoza, Valparaiso, Cape Horn

Diana and I cannot heap enough praise on Zicasso’s travel agents for the trip they planned for us. Everything went according to schedule and there were no problems.

Every pick-up was on time and the drivers were very attentive to our needs. Several engaged Diana in Spanish conversations as they were happy she was a porteño.

The hotel in BA was a hidden gem. The room and hotel were very clean, and the staff were outstanding. The agent at the desk even arranged for us to leave our luggage at the hotel after we got off the cruise ship three weeks after we checked out. (After two weeks in BA and Mendoza, we took a two-week cruise from Valparaiso, Chile, to BA, around Cape Horn.)

We used taxis and Uber in BA, and surprisingly, found our credit cards gave us a very favorable exchange rate. We did convert some dollars on the Blue Market, especially for taxis.

The hotel and vineyard in Chacras de Coria was very quaint and quiet. It was about 20 minutes from downtown Mendoza. It was a wonderful setting, but we thought it was closer to the city. We did a city tour with your guide.

We had two wonderful dinners at the hotel, in a restaurant that was literally in the middle of the vineyard. One night we had a parrilla with a young couple from Singapore. The vineyard tours you arranged were very interesting and we started tasting the fine malbecs at 10am! We also had an excellent lunch at a third vineyard.

We spent one night at a hotel in Valparaiso. It was our least favorite of the hotels we stayed at, but it was only one night and we did meet other people who were going on the same cruise. I will say that the hotel had an excellent breakfast buffet.

We wanted to have a nice seafood dinner for our one night in Valparaiso. We walked several blocks uphill (the word “flat” does not exist in Valparaiso!) and found a nice restaurant with music. When we left, we turned right instead of left and got totally lost. We finally called an Uber and it turned out we were very close to the hotel!

We spent a lot of time planning this trip with you and you were so patient and understanding of our requirements. You were able to work within our budget and we are so appreciative of the effort, knowledge, and time you put into our trip.

Muchas gracias to our travel agent!

Luxury Chile, Argentina & Antarctica Travel Review: Torres del Paine, El Calafate, El Chalten, Santiago, Buenos Aires, Valparaiso
Our trip was a three week customized journey which included an Antarctic cruise, three stops in Patagonia (Torres del Paine, El Calafate, and El Chalten), and time in Santiago (with day trip to Valparaiso and Viña del Mar) and Buenos Aires. Mariano, owner of this travel company, assisted us for over a year in the detailed planning and refinement of our itinerary, which included multiple in-country flights, hotel and camp reservations, transfers, guided tours, and many other moving parts. The excellent work Mariano did, reflecting our desires for a trip of a lifetime, paid off handsomely in a largely effortless tour experience. Once we arrived, our "destination host," Jeremias, was continuously available and responsive to any moment to moment needs we had (for example snags with accessing electronic boarding passes, confirmation of transfer arrangements, real-time communication at airport pick-up times outside baggage claim in unfamiliar locations). Mariano and Jeremias even took time out of their busy schedule (this is busy season in South America) to meet us personally, and Mariano took us out for a delicious seafood dinner in Buenos Aires even though he had family visiting and his young 14-month old daughter at home waiting for him. To say that this trip exceeded expectations is an understatement. We recommend our travel agency without reservation and enthusiastically!
