Melbourne – A Calm Landing

Arrive in the cultural capital of Australia, Melbourne. A city full of quaint cafés, beautiful gardens, eclectic museums, and a vibrancy that is both international and uniquely Australian. Take part in the welcome reception at the Hotel Crowne Plaza, a plush hotel overlooking the serene Yarra River.

Relax in one of the many cafés of Melbourne, a city that boasts its café culture as part of its lifeblood. No matter the weather, sit with the locals under the umbrellas, most often lining an alley, like Degraves Street, with restaurants and umbrellas sitting shoulder to shoulder, the smell of fresh pastries and chocolates drifting through the street. For a sweet treat, try Little Cupcakes, their Blueberry Pistachio cupcake has the tart sweetness of berry with the earthy crunch of pistachio.

Melbourne is a city known for its art. The boutiques clustered around Little Collins Street are funky and fresh with styles that range from avant-garde and international, to strictly Australian, bannering the proud cry, “Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie!” across the garment’s chest. The street art that coats the city is vibrant and adored, colorful pieces that range from political satire to comic book appreciation. A walk down most streets in Melbourne will boast how proud the city is about their artistic culture, whether worn on a local’s shoulders as a broach or painted on the city’s walls.

New Zealand’s scenery ranges from the welcoming green of the prairies to the looming white tips of the Southern Alps. The indescribable beauty that Australia and New Zealand offer lies in the history, culture, and luxury of the cities, along with the untouched naturalness that encompasses so much of both countries.

The journey through Australia takes you from Melbourne, Australia’s café clad cultural capital, to the deep Red Centre to see the wonders of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest monolith, Uluru. The legend of Dream Time will compel you to wander deeper into your tour. Cool off in the inviting waters of the Great Barrier Reef, swimming with the vibrant fish. South Pacific Vacation Review: Australia & New Zealand, Aukland, Sydney, Wellington, Rotorua, Hobbiton, Doubtful Sound

~~I retired and my wife and I decided it was time to take the trip to New Zealand and Australia that we had been talking about for quite some time.  I discovered Zicasso while doing my initial research for the trip and decided to give it a try, in addition to the many standard tours we were looking into.  I had many different firms provide proposals and after doing my due diligence I settled on this firm.

Our agent listened and consistently provided options and insights that resulted in a month long itinerary that promised to deliver the experiences we were looking for.  She was a pleasure to deal with.

We spent two weeks in New Zealand beginning in Auckland, moving south through Hobbiton and Rotorua where we gained a deep appreciation for the Maori people and their culture.  Then on to Wellington the capital.  The ferry to Picton and the train to Christchurch were inspiring.  Then we drove from Christchurch to Mt. Cook and then on to Queenstown.  The night we spent on Doubtful Sound was the all-around highlight of the trip.  All throughout the tour guides, drivers and accommodations exceeded expectations.  Then we were on to Australia where our first stop was Sydney.  Alongside the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge a highlight was a half day guided tour of the city in a 1964 Holden.  Then we were on to Cairns and Port Douglas where the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest awaited.  Our day on the Reef was extraordinary.  Snorkeling off the beach at Low Isle was an experience to remember.  Our day on the Daintree River and in the rainforest was unforgettable.  While driving we stopped as a male cassowary and four chicks crossed the road and disappeared into to the bush.  Now we were on to Ayers Rock where the magic of Uluru awaited.  The Sounds of Silence dinner in the desert as the sun set with Uluru in the distance and didgeridoo in the background was magical.  As our time was growing short we were off to Melbourne where we joined a tour on the Great Ocean Road.  Wow, the Twelve Apostles and the coast exceeded our expectations.  What a great place.  Only matched, maybe outdone by the hosts of the B&B’s we stayed at.  We’re not big B&B folks, but the Lock Ard and Little River B&Bs were perfect and we will try more in the future.

Our agent had truly delivered a trip of a lifetime.

Australia & New Zealand Travel Agent Review: Sydney, Port Douglas, South Island, Wellington, Kayaking Doubtful Bay, River Rafting
Wonderful. It was well planned and went off without a hitch (other than the rain/flooding in NZ.) Our travel planner is well informed on the area. He listened to what we were looking for and the itinerary reflected that. It was action-packed but the activities did not repeat themselves. We did change a few of the hotels from what the planner initially suggested (as we wanted a king bed) and in hindsight--those were the least liked hotels (especially the hotel in Sydney and the Villas-a bit shabby.)We have friends that did Shotover River Rafting which is probably a more thrilling ride through the Gorge but due to the weather we were glad we were on Dart, as Shotover wasn't running. We did the the Queenstown Steamship cruise (the lunch option) on a day that one of the days that our 4 tours were cancelled due to the raining/flooding and really enjoyed that. Also the Sydney Harbor Lunch was very nice. The weather temperature was pretty good and heard from Franz Josef through Te Anau that the substantial rain was a century event. The tour guides did an excellent job, really enjoyed our guide from Walkabout Cultural and our guide from the Doubtful Bay Kayaking (Doubtful was really more stunning than Milford). We did hit a Millers Point hotel on our first day in Sydney (nice late afternoon activity/view) and would recommend restaurants:1. An international dish restaurant in Port Douglas (best dinner of the trip)2. Makers of the best peanut butter (for a novelty PB snack) in Wellington3.Seafood and Vegetarian restaurant in Christchurch4. Italian in Wanaka (best to make rsvps)5. Hamburger restaurant in Queenstown (for the novelty) and the Pub on the wharf for a good $20 dinner and live music at 8pm

Tahiti, New Zealand & Australia Luxury Trip Review, Railroad Tour from Christchurch to Greymouth, Snorkeling Great Barrier Reef
So happy to have been able to visit Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti.  Australia (visited Sydney and Cairns/Port Douglas) was amazing, New Zealand (South Island) incredibly beautiful and Tahiti (Moorea) was also beautiful and provided a nice relaxing end to our trip of a lifetime.  The trip planner at this travel agency provided a very nice itinerary to accommodate our desired excursions/activities.  The transportation arrangements and hotel/resort accommodations were excellent.  That said, there are a few things that we feel the travel team should have managed better and #1 is a very "big miss" in our opinion which is why we gave 2 star rating (some in party suggested 1 star)....1.  We missed our flight from Cairns, AUS to Christchurch, NZ due to change by airline (which happened a few weeks before we embarked on our trip) that was apparently not communicated to the travel agency.  This caused us to have a very long day of flying to various cities in AUS to get into position to fly out the next morning to Christchurch which caused us to miss most of our planned day in Christchurch including missing whale watching excursion that was on our bucket list.2.  Beyond our missed whale watching excursion in Christchurch, the hell hike excursion in Franz Josef and the scenic flight to Milford Sound were cancelled due to weather conditions.  While weather conditions that cancelled these excursions were obviously out of the control of the travel team, I think it would have been appropriate to caution us that given the short amount of time and the very unpredictable weather (maybe just this time of year - end of November) in New Zealand we would run risk of having cancelled excursions that would be difficult if not impossible to reschedule.3.  One other note, cautioning us regarding restaurant/food/service expectations in countries we were visiting would have been appreciated as this would have calibrated us and would have helped us make different decisions on restaurants that would have saved us money and frankly enjoyed the restaurants/food more.

New Zealand Travel Review: Auckland, Queenstown, Milford Sound, Sailing, Wine Tasting, Hiking, 2 Week Adventure Trip
This was a trip of a lifetime.  We worked well together, came up with an awesome itinerary for 6 weeks to New Zealand and Australia.  You name it we were going to do it.  This truly was an itinerary with planes, trains & automobiles.  Let's not forget to include boats, helicopter, camel and kayak.  We had such a variety of things planned including wine tasting in both NZ and Australia.  I can't say enough good things about our travel company!!!  In the planning stages they even spoke to us about where and when to go as far as seasons and which way to go whether it be Australia first or NZ. As it turned out, the recommendation to go to New Zealand first was perfect. We were saved the experience of Australia for only a few weeks and maybe being stuck there!  No stone was left unturned, even when the fires occurred in Australia.  Our impact was going to be minimal. We left the US on March 9th for NZ arriving on the 11th.  No problems with Covid-19, we continued on with our itinerary.  Sailing in the harbor in Auckland, wine tasting on a beautiful little island outside of Auckland.  On to Queenstown which is delightful and Milford Sound for an overnight on a ship.  Absolutely beautiful.  Glad we did this vs a day trip or boat ride.  We flew back to Queenstown, which I'd recommend because you have a great overview of the mountains.  Breathtaking!!  Picked up a rental car and drove to Franz Josef to climb the glacier.  We're an older couple, but this was an incredible, first-time experience! My husband still marvels! We took a train to Christchurch which is still suffering the after effects of the 2011 earthquake.  Again a train up the Pacific Coast which is beautiful to Nelson.  Kayaking, hiking and a catamaran in the Tasman Sea.  What scenery!!  Up to Rotorua for more fun.  Well this is where the wheels starting coming off of our fun.  Things got cancelled because of Covid-19 and the ever changing environment of new shut downs and what the government was asking of people and vacationers.  Starting on the 15th of March our travel agent was continually in contact with us about Covid-19 and how our itinerary was going to be impacted.  She made alternative suggestions, we made the decision to extend in NZ.  As our trip went along, things kept changing....  NZ decided to shut down on March 25 midnight.  Our new flight home was March 29, then March 27.  She worked with us so closely and was so helpful she actually got us a flight home on March 25.  While we were having fun and enjoying ourselves, this company was working for us behind the scenes.  You can't ask for more than that!!  By the way, we came home and quarantined.  To date, we're healthy.

Australia, New Zealand Luxury Vacation Review: Melbourne, Sydney, Cairns, Queenstown, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Wanaka

Our Zicasso travel agent helped us plan a dream family vacation with our adult sons to Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, and Cairns) and New Zealand (Queenstown, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Wanaka).

We only had three weeks for two countries, but our tour operator fit in a Great Barrier Reef dive, Melbourne and Sydney bike tours, wine tastings, a private luxury boat tour of Sydney, river rafting, a Siberian Air and jet-boat experience with a 7km hike through New Zealand's wilderness, an overnight stay on a boat in Milford Sound, glow worms, a wildlife sanctuary, and a steamboat ride to enjoy tea at a farm to watch sheep shearing. All this and we still had free time to explore on our own. The accommodations were top-notch and the majority had laundry facilities in our unit!

He was fantastic to work with – highly responsive and detailed, and we would definitely recommend his services! His presentation of the itinerary and activities was really helpful. He spent over two hours with a video presentation covering all aspects of our trip. This included hotel and activity locations, with detailed views. This made things really easy to navigate once we were there. Anything he reserved for us went without a glitch and all transports showed up on time.

Cyclone Jasper hit Australia right before our trip and Zicasso's travel partner spent a lot of unexpected extra time reconfiguring the first few days of our itinerary, given the storm's impact on our first location. Again, another two-hour conference covering these changes, which put our minds at ease. We still got everything on our dream list covered and greatly appreciate his extra time, especially as this was during the holiday season. It really was the trip of a lifetime!

Australia & Tasmania Tour: Sydney, Blue Mountains, Ayers Rock, Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Winery Tour, Bonorong, Bruny Island

Our trip to Australia was a trip of a lifetime and it exceeded all our expectation thanks to our travel agent from the Australia tour company. Our agent worked with us tirelessly for months to customize a package to fit our needs and our budget. Our trip consisted of 10 airline flights, 8 shuttle transfers, 7 hotels and 10 tours. Every connection went like clockwork and problem free.  Each tour was well managed and professionally done. Every hotel was clean and comfortable with 100% satisfaction from us.  We were particularly happy with Tasmania in general and the Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart.

Our 4 days in Sydney over New Years was fabulous and we loved the city.  The Hunter Valley Wine tour was great and we were sorry to miss the Blue Mountain tour but it did not fit.  Ayers Rock was enjoyable and we were glad to make it a brief stopover. Cairns was a beautiful location and we enjoyed our 3 days there doing Karanda and the Reef.  As mentioned Tasmania was super special.  We loved the Bruny Island cruise and the city of Hobart.  We drove our rental car to Swansea with stops at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary (highly recommended) and historic Richmond.  After a visit to Freycinet National Park which was lovely, we drove to Launceston.

Our 3 days in Melbourne after our Princess cruise was also very special.  We enjoyed the city and the Travelodge Southbank hotel.  It had the perfect location next to the Eureka Tower, the riverwalk and the free tram for the city. We flew home on Australia Day which was a little disappointing but no one considered that before the trip..
