Luxury Australia Vacation Review: Brisbane, Cairns, Sydney Harbor Tour, Blue Mountain Hike, Jenolan Caves, Great Barrier Reef

Our agent did a great job planning our 2 week vacation to the east coast of Australia.  He steered us away from our initial plan of driving up the coast, and instead encouraged us to fly from Sydney to Cairns. He covered all of the details - hotels, car transfers, in-country flights, visas and a GREAT 5 day cruise along the Great Barrier Reef.  Our agent was thorough and very easy to communicate with.

South Pacific Vacation Review: Australia & New Zealand, Aukland, Sydney, Wellington, Rotorua, Hobbiton, Doubtful Sound

~~I retired and my wife and I decided it was time to take the trip to New Zealand and Australia that we had been talking about for quite some time.  I discovered Zicasso while doing my initial research for the trip and decided to give it a try, in addition to the many standard tours we were looking into.  I had many different firms provide proposals and after doing my due diligence I settled on this firm.

Our agent listened and consistently provided options and insights that resulted in a month long itinerary that promised to deliver the experiences we were looking for.  She was a pleasure to deal with.

We spent two weeks in New Zealand beginning in Auckland, moving south through Hobbiton and Rotorua where we gained a deep appreciation for the Maori people and their culture.  Then on to Wellington the capital.  The ferry to Picton and the train to Christchurch were inspiring.  Then we drove from Christchurch to Mt. Cook and then on to Queenstown.  The night we spent on Doubtful Sound was the all-around highlight of the trip.  All throughout the tour guides, drivers and accommodations exceeded expectations.  Then we were on to Australia where our first stop was Sydney.  Alongside the Opera House and the Harbor Bridge a highlight was a half day guided tour of the city in a 1964 Holden.  Then we were on to Cairns and Port Douglas where the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest awaited.  Our day on the Reef was extraordinary.  Snorkeling off the beach at Low Isle was an experience to remember.  Our day on the Daintree River and in the rainforest was unforgettable.  While driving we stopped as a male cassowary and four chicks crossed the road and disappeared into to the bush.  Now we were on to Ayers Rock where the magic of Uluru awaited.  The Sounds of Silence dinner in the desert as the sun set with Uluru in the distance and didgeridoo in the background was magical.  As our time was growing short we were off to Melbourne where we joined a tour on the Great Ocean Road.  Wow, the Twelve Apostles and the coast exceeded our expectations.  What a great place.  Only matched, maybe outdone by the hosts of the B&B’s we stayed at.  We’re not big B&B folks, but the Lock Ard and Little River B&Bs were perfect and we will try more in the future.

Our agent had truly delivered a trip of a lifetime.

Australia Vacation Review: Sydney Harbor Cruise, Melbourne, Cairns, Local Culture, Port Campbell National Park, Wildlife

The following was sent to our Zicasso agent:

All the hotels were good so not much more to say. So were the flights.

First city was Melbourne and what a city it is. I would move there.

Day one we first stopped at a private zoo. We saw kangaroos, wallabies and koalas and got to pet them. Pretty good.

We continued our drive and eventually got to where we would see the penguins at night. While still daylight saw many wallabies.

The penguins coming out of the sea was a lifetime event. This was the best day of the entire tour. We got to the hotel about midnight.

Next day we travelled to the 12 Apostles. Even though very far it was worth the trip. We also stopped at a national park where we

saw many kangaroos in the wild and a couple Koalas up in trees. This day was also pretty good.

Piece of advice on these two days. If it can be done reverse the order.  The way we did it we got to the hotel about midnight the first day

and by the time we took a shower it was 12:30 AM. Next morning we were picked up at 7:30 but had to be up by 6:30 to dress and have breakfast before being picked up.

All in all, Melbourne was the best part of the tour. Many good places to eat with reasonable prices.

Next we flew to Cairns. Had part of the day to walk around the hotel. It was very nice even though very warm. We walked to the street just around the hotel to eat and what a tourist trap that street was. Next couple days we walked away from the hotel several blocks and found good restaurants and reasonable prices.

First day we went to the great barrier reef and this was also a highlight of the tour. Even though the reef itself is in bad shape, the snorkeling allowed us to see many fish. Great day.

2nd day was the aborigines tour and sorry to say it was a waste of money and time. First off, the vehicle was too small for guys like us that are above 6 feet. We drove north and other that the fact that the area looks a lot like the place where we come from, Puerto Rico it was unremarkable. The man whose ancestors might have  been aborigines but he is now a civilized city dweller, stopped couple times to show us some plants. One smelled wonderful but we all know most perfumes come from plants. The second by crushing leaves he made like soap suds. That took all morning because the drive was lengthy. Maybe 100 miles each way.

We then stopped for lunch and it was a lame one. We each got 2 small wraps one of ham which was just ok and one of chicken with mostly greens and little amounts of chicken.  Perhaps that was all that could be bought in the area. If so, we could have arranged much better lunch boxes at the hotel.

After that came the worst. We drove at length to a park where the entrance to the highlight of the day, the gorge was to be seen.

The guide took us to a place where he told us to wait. And wait we did. About 30 minutes. I finally got up and went to the counter to ask if they seen our guide. Before I got to ask, I saw a pile of printed flyers. They said that due to a big flood about a month before the road to the gorge was closed for repairs. Sorry, no gorge. I went outside to look for the guide. We was not around. However there was a man at the entrance and I asked him how long had the road been closed and he said couple weeks and that our guide should have know about it. The guide finally showed up and said sorry, no gorge which we already knew about. At that point, it looked like we were going to go back. My brother in law asked the guide if there was anything else worth doing. By the way, it was now 99 degrees Fahrenheit which is very hot. He took us to a stream where we sat in rocks with our feet in the water under some trees which allowed us to cool off somewhat.

Honestly, if he had told us what this was going to be like it turned out, we would have cancelled the day and asked for a refund.

We do not blame him. He was just doing his job. We felt that when he disappeared he might have been trying to reach his boss to get instructions of what to do. We blame the company. They should have know by the day we went that the road to the gorge was closed.

Next day we flew to Sydney and spent the rest of the afternoon touring the opera house which was great. Also one of the highlights of the tour.

Next day we went on a boat tour of Sydney harbor. That was really super. Besides the sights, there was a lady guide which gave a great narration of the sights. We did lunch on our own and then went to the zoo.

I honestly cannot figure out why. I suppose it was our fault for not paying enough attention to what was being offered.

We had seen all the Australian animals both in the private zoo and in the wild so the zoo did not offer anything new.

On top of that this zoo is old and in bad shape. We were told they are working on a $200 million rehab. Fine for the future visitors but not for us. Us being veteran travelers we all have been in great zoos in Europe and America. Because of the work that is going on there are no shows being performed. No seal shows, etc.

Next day we went to see the Blue mountains and that was a real long drive. If you have seen the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA and the wolf gorge in south France, then the real long drive to see the Blue mountains was not worth it.

And that was that.

As I said, parts were great, but parts were a waste of time and money.

Sorry to have to put it that way but that is how I feel. You might ask my brother in law for his opinion. Perhaps it might differ.

Australia Tour Review: Sydney, Phillip Island, Penguin Experience, Melbourne, Local Cuisine, History, Great Barrier Reef

I really thought the Zicasso travel partner was fabulous and so thorough and easy to use. I would rate it the best travel app. It had my itinerary down to the minute detail, info on how to contact various people if there were any questions, and was so easy to navigate.  I would rate my trip to Australia my favorite so far. I recently went to Japan through a different travel agent and was able to compare the difference. Our travel team was so much better!

My husband and I went to Australia to drop off my daughter, who was doing an exchange study in Sydney. We started in Melbourne and had a full-day tour to Phillip Island, with a moonlit animal sanctuary and penguins. I would recommend the penguins. I saw thousands of penguins. What an experience! I did not like the sanctuary part. Tickets were sold out for the koala petting and there were not very many animals to see. I have heard there are other sanctuaries/zoos in other parts of Australia that are much better.

The Melbourne food tour was fantastic! Our tour guide did a wonderful job of explaining Melbourne's history with the food. We flew to Cairns, to Port Douglas, and had two excursions: a boat ride with snorkeling in the Great Reef Barrier and a Daintree safari.  The full-day cruise with snorkeling was wonderful, with so much food! The Daintree tour was a bit long and could have been condensed into half the time. I probably would not recommend that tour.

Finally, we went to Sydney to drop off my daughter. We did the bridge walk, which was fantastic. Each person was so well protected and the safety checks were top-notch!

Our trip went without any problems and our drivers were well-coordinated and on schedule. I would use this company for future trips to Australia. I plan to visit New Zealand and would use them again.

Australia & New Zealand Tour: Australian Open, Ayers Rock, Great Ocean Road, Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Auckland, Doubtful Sound

The travel company did a great job for us.  Everything worked as planned. Our agent was very helpful and always responded quickly to inquiries.

Aussie Open, 44C/111F on second day - Wow that’s hot.  106 & 108 F on first and third days.  A bit cooler.  Saw some amazing tennis and had fun despite the heat, suspended play and Williams sisters pulling out of the doubles.

Great Ocean Road is fabulous, though the coach tour is bit long, 15 hours, and stops at anything that looks interesting.  I enjoyed it all, but Debbie was less thrilled due to the length and constant dialog from the guide.  We learned our tolerance of guided tours is not very high.

Cairns was great: Great Barrier Reef was just spectacular. The tour was absolutely first rate. Fabulous!! Best snorkeling conditions ever and of course the reef is awesome.  No sharks unfortunately.

Kurnda was wonderful and I especially loved the trip through the tree tops in the gondola.

We rented bikes in Cairns and had a blast riding along the coast.  The hotel is surrounded by trees with thousands of fruit bats living in them.  At dusk they all take off flying around the hotel and nearby streets. I thought it was great but the wife was a little freaked out.

Uluru was nice … and hot.  Sunset was pretty, but we attracted a lot of flies. The hiking was a bit much for some of the party.  Sunrise was early … and not as good as sunset.  We had the same guide for both, a French woman, which was a bit disappointing for the wife - she wanted an Aussie.  Beautiful place with wonderful stories.

Sydney was wonderful.  Opera house tour and story of the architect made us cry.  Harbor cruise was spectacular.  Loved Sydney and the Rocks area.

Blue mountains were fogged in, but we had fun on the high angle train.  Debbie screamed the whole way down on purpose for a Frenchman videoing the trip.. He spoke no english and we no french, but he loved the soundtrack he got.  This was on Australia day.

Driving in New Zealand, South island was a snap.  Te Anau was beautiful as was Milford Sound and Doubtful was the best of all.  The overnight was great and we saw millions of stars, Wow!  We Kayaked and swam in the Tasman sea.  Cold - 59F!

Queenstown was wonderful, though the day before a couple from India told us there was nothing to do there.  Ha!  There was plenty to do.  The gondola and luge were a blast and we really enjoyed the city.  If we ever go back, Queenstown will be one of the cities we visit, along with Auckland.

We got fogged out of our helicopter trip to the Franz Josef Glacier.  Refund in the works.  But we did hike out to see the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers.  Not too bad, but tough to take pictures under a cloudy sky.

TranzAlpine railroad was very nice, relaxing and beautiful.  Christchurch looked like a war zone.  We were surprised at the apparent slow progress some 3+ years after the earthquake.  But NZ doesn’t have the resources for a quick rebuild I guess.

North Island driving was a bit more challenging due to more people, but not bad.  We got a smaller car this time and it was easier to fit on the slightly narrower roads of NZ.

The Scenic Hotel in Napier was fabulous.  We were sorry we were staying only one night.  The view from the window was spectacular.  Walked quite a bit and enjoyed the area.

The Copthorne in Rotorua was likely the worst place we stayed.  Not bad (the others were great), but it needs updating.  Rainy day for the area attractions tour, but we enjoyed most of it, especially the Agrodome show - wonderful!  Rotorua does have a pervasive sulfur smell to it, but I got used to it.

Auckland was wonderful.  We each captained (steered) a 50 foot sailboat in the harbor on a beautiful 1hr 30min cruise.  Highly recommended.  The Explorer hop on/hop off was OK, but not a big hit.  We did see some very nice sights.

Highlight of Auckland, besides the sailing, was being “kidnapped” by a local woman, about 65-70 years old, and driven to Mount Victoria, after we took the ferry across the harbor. She gave us a history lesson, showed us all around and took us to her favorite bar afterwards. I was quite wary to start with, but we decided to accompany her in her car.  Worked out very nicely.

All flights were very good, with wonderful service on the LAX-Melbourne and Sydney-LAX legs.  The latter flight was about 40% full, so we could really stretch out and sleep.  No jet lag to speak of on either end - we planned our sleep times well.

Australia & New Zealand Tour: Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Rainforest, Melbourne, Sydney, Penguin Parade, Fjords, Harbor Cruises

Overall trip was well planned...the tree house in the rain forest near Cairns was 5 star...th front row to see the march of the penguins was awesome...so the upgrades on tours was a pleasant surprise. The only criticism would be the quality of the hotels booked in melbourne and sydney. One consideration might be flexibility in the trip to the barrier reef making it able to be switched when weather made the viewing of the reef impossible..meaning set the possibility of switching in advance when weather turns bad. But overall it was the trip of a lifetime i was hoping for...i have recommended Zicasso to other travellers i met while on the trip....thanks for doing a good job
