Day 1

Fitzgerald River National Park – Adventurous Beginnings

Your day begins in Perth, Australia with the untouched landscapes of the west before you. Western Australia stretches along stunning beaches, rugged cliffs, and striking desert ready for you to explore. Begin your journey with a visit to York, the oldest inland town in Western Australia, a short distance outside of Perth. The township is charming, filled with Edwardian beauty and pillared structures that adorn the main street. The church has a towering brick spire that stretches tall into the open sky.

While you are inland you will explore the serene landscape around Hyden where you will climb onto the oldest plateau on earth, Greenmount Hill in the Darling Range. The gigantic granite piece sits in the sun and is open to rushing wind and falling rain, which has shaped the rock over millions of years. The rock rises and curls like a tremendous wave that sparkles in the sunlight. Once you have “ridden” the Wave Rock, and explored its spectacular structure you will make your way to Fitzgerald River National Park where inspiring trails curve along the shore. The water shines an opulent blue, waves lap at the rocky coast, and the sky is open as far as the eye can see. Whether standing on the hilltops and feeling the misty breeze through your hair, or walking along the hot sand, there is always open space to explore and enjoy.

Detailed Description

This stunning 9-day tour takes you on an adventure through the secluded towns and diverse natural wonders of Australia. Not all Australia vacations are for the adventurous, but this journey is for explorers, adventurers, and the just plain curious who are ready to enjoy the open landscape, antique history, and underwater beauty. Wander through the majesty of Australia where granite rock stretches through the scenery and curls like a wave, Edwardian architecture decorates the oldest township in the west, and the beaches are filled with warm white-powder sand. The awe of this unique adventure is yours to experience as you travel along the winding roads of the coast, through the vast, flat plains of Nullarbor, and take the custom tailored path through the stunning landscapes and the seclusion of the outback down under.

Begin your adventure in the city of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Jump out of the city and into the sensational outback with a visit to York, the oldest township in Western Australia and known for its Edwardian architecture. Pretend to surf along the granite wave of Wave Rock before traveling along the coast of Fitzgerald River National Park and the stunning views that meander along the shores of the walking trails. Once in Esperance you will experience the history of the multicultural settlements that mark the town, and wander along the warm white sand of the beaches where the water shines bright blue and kangaroos lounge around the breezy bay. As the roads stretch farther with untouched beauty and expansive landscapes you continue to see the sensational splendor of pure Australia.

Continue your adventure in Eucla where you can visit the old Telegraph Station halfway covered in sand like a forgotten relic of Australian history. The sand dunes roll and stretch from the horizon to the sea where in the proper season you can venture out to see the Southern Right Whales. Whether out in the sea or standing along the stunning bluffs of the Great Australian Bight, dolphins swim in the lull of white water, and the mist splashes up from the cliff base spraying the air with the sweet scent of the sea. Venture through the arid plain of Nullarbor, where the flat panorama is treeless and incredible, before arriving in Eyre Peninsula. Whether traveling out into the water to swim with sea lions or venturing along the coast to experience the unique granite formations, the day will inspire and awe as you settle into the Coodlie Park Farm Retreat and tour the wild animals that wander the grounds.

Arrive in Fowlers Bay where you will have the opportunity to advance your surfing skills with a private lesson in the stunning Australian waters. Connect with the beauty of the sea from beyond the shores and let the cool water carry you to the beach before arriving in Port Lincoln. The sun shines bright on your time in Port Lincoln, where the unique opportunity to cage-dive with Great White Sharks awaits you. Take advantage of the opportunity to safely view the wondrous animal in its natural habitat where afterward you can relax in the comforts of an authentic Aussie country pub. The final day of your journey has you wandering through the Wadlata Cultural Centre where the natural history of South Australia and its surroundings come to life, and where you can wander through the exceptional beauty of Flinders Range before arriving in the luxuries of Adelaide. The landscape of Australia has been nothing less than glamorous from the West to the South, offering you the unique sights of the secluded world that Australia has kept secret until now.

Luxury Australia & New Zealand Trip Review, Sydney Opera House & Botanical Gardens, Queenstown Sky Trolley & Bird Sanctuary, Yacht
We were pleased with the accommodations and the flexibility. The flights there were seamless, Quantas is exceptional. Sadly the flights back were not. Personally, if I can avoid it, I’ll not fly United or Air New Zealand again. We also had difficulty getting into New Zealand as they haven’t worked out the kinks in their new visa program. The hotels were spot on and so convenient. The breakfast included made everything so much easier and less stressful in terms of finding a place and payment. The food, especially at Hamilton Island was amazing.  We were able to walk anywhere we needed so fewer cab/Uber fees. We did seem to do a lot of 5 star cuisine ( the food was nice but none of them were impressive or 5 star). By the end of our Australia leg we were pretty much over being on the water. The first yacht we did in Hamilton Island was amazing. Great staff, nice small group, excellent beach. The second one we did (cannot recall they name) was just to big a group, everything seemed impersonal and snorkeling was a pain because you kept literally running into other people. Sydney was great, and being in The Rocks is the way to go. We could walk most anywhere we wanted to go and if it was farther we were close to the ferries. Found a great little pizzaeria that had the best margarita pizza ever. Plus it was directly behind our hotel. I wish we would have had time to go to the big zoo and not just the smaller wildlife one, but I’m glad we made the choice we did. The Wildlife center, attached to the aquarium, only has native animals so that was cool. My biggest surprise was with Australian souvenirs nothing was made in Australia. Artwork was aboriginal but it was all outsourced. New Zealand was great as everything including manufacturing was from New Zealand. That, to me, is a real souvenir, not something made in Asia that says Australia. I can make something that says Australia, the whole point is to have something from there and contribute locally.

Travel Review: Custom Australia Family Vacation, Sydney, Adelaide, Barossa Valley, Darwin, Ayers Rock, Bonza Bike Tour
Just wanted to take a minute to thank you for all the great work you did for us in organizing our Australian vacation. I truly appreciate it. I also want to take a minute to give you some feedback on a couple of items on the trip – so you can fold them into future trips – I hope this is useful. 1. I wouldn’t use the AOT transport services again – or at least – warn people that this is a ‘group’ transit service – I would particularly not use it for people’s arrival in Sydney. When we arrived, we were exhausted and in need of a shower, a change of clothes and a stretch. The van service was not on time – and then after he arrived (late) he informed us that we needed to wait for the arrival of another group of travelers on another flight. This was not good. 2. The Four Seasons in Sydney (I know you didn’t organize this but just FYI) was comfortable but oh my heavens all the extras were expensive. 3. The bike tour with Bonza was TERRIFIC. Interesting, just the right amount of exercise and just long enough. Also run by really nice and helpful young people. It also gave us a great overview of a couple of places we wanted to go back to on another day. 4. The Medina in Adelaide had huge, very well provisioned hotel rooms – these were more like apartments, including full kitchens, living rooms and eating areas. Similar (although larger) than an Embassy suites room in the US. I would strongly recommend this. But the breakfast service was TERRIBLE. Took forever. And every day the same orders resulted in slightly different meals! 5. Cleland Wildlife Park in Adelaide is a great way for people with a short amount of time to directly experience Aussie wildlife. We petted a koala. We hand fed Kangaroos etc. 6. Jacob’s Creek Winery has a nice Napa-style tasting room of the old style – they will let you taste pretty much anything for no cost. 7. The Barossa Valley is beautiful and a great way to spend a day wine tasting – only about an hour out of Adelaide. 8. Darwin isn’t worth going to – my husband and his brother did the WW2 stuff but my son and I were totally bored. 9. The hotel we were in in Darwin (I’m sorry, I”ve forgotten the name – was it a Sofitel?) had that kind of oldy-moldy-airconditioner under the window feel about it that didn’t make me want to ever go back. I would not recommend it again. And the concierge (when asked for a recommendation for a fish restaurant) sent us to a Chinese all you can eat buffet restaurant. Not sure where the fish was supposed to be. UGH. Net net – not very nice all around. 10. We really enjoyed our 1 ½ days at Ayers Rock – especially the Sounds of Silence and the Kata Tjuta walking tour (where we ran into one of our neighbors!!!) The location and layout of the hotel was quite nice but WARNING – The ENTIRE PUBLIC AREA of SAILS ON THE DESERT IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION – no restaurants, no lobby etc.. This was not a problem for US – we walked over to the Desert Garden for dinner (where dinner was one of the best meals we had in Australia) but probably would be for most people – I wouldn’t send anybody else there until the construction is done. Also – if people want to play tennis, tell them to take their own tennis balls – the hotel will ‘loan’ you a couple of aged ones but they won’t sell you a fresh can! 11. Hamilton Island Reef View was OUTSTANDING. I don’t know what you and AOT did, but our room, on the top floor of the hotel, was extensive, comfortable and had a terrific view. We also had absolutely personal service from a concierge, from picking us up at the airport – to giving us special recommendations for recreation options – to making our dinner reservations every night. She reached out to US as opposed to us chasing her. I would recommend this hotel to any of my friends or colleagues. 12. In terms of activities, though, I would suggest – if people can afford it – that they not use the big ‘group’ trip out the reef. The platform they have attached to the reef has clearly been there for quite some time. The reef is worn out there – it does NOT represent the beauty and diversity of the Great Barrier Reef. If there’s another more ‘private’ option, I would take it – or put a reef visit elsewhere in my trip. This was kind of sad, honestly. 13. The guys took the helicopter back from the reef to the hotel (there wasn’t enough seats for all of us ) and really enjoyed it – this trip went over the white silicon sand beach and the ‘heart’ reef. It was beautiful, apparently. 14. The Holiday Inn in Sydney is in a great location and fine for the basics (pretty good breakfast buffet) but after the Reef View………..sigh. It was a return to reality. That’s it – hope the feedback is useful.

Australia & Tasmania Tour: Sydney, Blue Mountains, Ayers Rock, Cairns, Great Barrier Reef, Winery Tour, Bonorong, Bruny Island

Our trip to Australia was a trip of a lifetime and it exceeded all our expectation thanks to our travel agent from the Australia tour company. Our agent worked with us tirelessly for months to customize a package to fit our needs and our budget. Our trip consisted of 10 airline flights, 8 shuttle transfers, 7 hotels and 10 tours. Every connection went like clockwork and problem free.  Each tour was well managed and professionally done. Every hotel was clean and comfortable with 100% satisfaction from us.  We were particularly happy with Tasmania in general and the Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart.

Our 4 days in Sydney over New Years was fabulous and we loved the city.  The Hunter Valley Wine tour was great and we were sorry to miss the Blue Mountain tour but it did not fit.  Ayers Rock was enjoyable and we were glad to make it a brief stopover. Cairns was a beautiful location and we enjoyed our 3 days there doing Karanda and the Reef.  As mentioned Tasmania was super special.  We loved the Bruny Island cruise and the city of Hobart.  We drove our rental car to Swansea with stops at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary (highly recommended) and historic Richmond.  After a visit to Freycinet National Park which was lovely, we drove to Launceston.

Our 3 days in Melbourne after our Princess cruise was also very special.  We enjoyed the city and the Travelodge Southbank hotel.  It had the perfect location next to the Eureka Tower, the riverwalk and the free tram for the city. We flew home on Australia Day which was a little disappointing but no one considered that before the trip..

Australia Travel Agent Review: Southwest Coast, Mount Gambier, Great Coastal Drive to Melbourne, Margaret River, Esperance, Albany
Everything went perfectly. It was a lovely trip to a part of Australia that we had never traveled around, the southwest coast. We continued by flying to Adelaide and driving from there to Melbourne on the Great Coastal Drive.  "The Barn Accommodation"  Mount Gambier, Australia  was a highlight!
