Beijing – Welcome to China!

Your flight to Beijing lands in the early afternoon. Your guide and private driver meet you in the arrivals lobby. During the half-hour journey to your hotel, a plethora of fantastic sights surround you. From the seven beltways that encircle the city to the countless skyscrapers under construction, Beijing is a city continuously undergoing transformation and growth.

You arrive at your luxury accommodation. Located less than a mile from the Imperial Palace, the hotel is situated among the city’s historic hutongs. The hutongs are narrow alleys linking multiple traditional homes, some dating back 400 years. The hutongs are known for their magnificent private courtyards, something your own luxury accommodation spares no expense to emulate for your enjoyment. Your room features modern amenities while staying true to the hotel’s Qing dynasty design.

After some time to freshen up, your guide picks you up for dinner. Your first taste of China is at the famous restaurant specializing in duck dishes. The outside gardens feature modern art, and inside a chef cuts duck right at your table. Wrapped in a thin pancake with fresh cucumber, scallions, and sweet bean sauce, the first bite is a decadent blend of tastes and textures.

Detailed Description

Your tour begins in Beijing, China’s capital and home to some of the county’s finest cultural treasures. Over two days, you get to know the locals by exploring the city’s oldest neighborhoods and practicing tai-chi in the soft morning light. Enjoy succulent Peking Duck along with a variety of other culinary treats. Your lovely hotel is in one of the city’s most historic districts, and it makes you feel right at home.

From Beijing, you venture north by private car to the Great Wall. At your secluded villa overlooking the wall, dine on a specially prepared lunch before spending the afternoon exploring the restored and original Great Wall. From the ruins of an ancient watchtower, take part in an ancient Chinese tradition of flying a kite there. Your day ends with a private barbecue dinner at your villa.

Xi’an was known as Chang’an throughout its 1,000-year history as China’s capital. Its impressive city walls are a testament to the engineering of the past when defenders protected the city against foreign invasions and local rebellions. As you tour the city on bicycle, the massive walls are never out of sight. At the end of your tour, you step inside the Grand Mosque of Xi’an. Dating back to the 8th-century, it is an elegant symbol of how Islam adapted to Chinese culture.

An hour’s ride away from Xi’an are the famous terracotta warriors and horses. Part of a sprawling burial complex constructed for the first emperor of China, the thousands of warriors leave you breathless when you first gaze upon them. While there, you learn much about the statues’ construction and preservation, and the greater treasures still buried underground.

Flying south from Xi’an, you arrive in Guilin, a step into the distant past. Here, you discover China’s most beautiful landscapes, from terraced rice farms to impossibly steep cliffs. Exploring the area over three days on bicycle and bamboo raft, you cannot help but feel at peace within this beautiful landscape.

For two days you tour Shanghai, a city with its feet planted in both the past and future. Walking alongside the stately European buildings on the Bund, learn about Shanghai’s history, when most of the city was controlled by England, France, and Germany. Across the river is the Pudong, a district of futuristic skyscrapers all constructed in the last 25 years. They symbolize the glory of 21st-century China.

Your final destination is Hong Kong. Returned to China in 1997, the city retains many British influences. From the names of city streets to the architecture, you discover a blend of cultures and languages as you explore some of the city’s most famous neighborhoods and priceless vistas.

This 11-day tour is perfect for couples of all ages. It is best taken in the Spring or Fall when China’s weather is ideal for outdoor exploration. Luxury accommodations and expert guides are included in all cities. Your guides are trained to assist you with any questions that may arise throughout the course of the tour.

Travel Review: Tour of China, Shenzhen, Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai, Xi'an, Guilin, Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors

This travel agent planned our 3 week trip to explore China for our party of four.  We started in Beijing and walked on the Great Wall, learned much about Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, went to Xian for the Terracotta Warriors, to Chengdu for the Pandas, Hangzhou and Tunxi, then a hike up the Huangshan Mountain; Shanghai and the Shanghai Tower, Guilin for the amazing countryside and rice terraces, Shenzhen to visit our nephew and Hong Kong as the finale.  Transportation, guides, accommodations were wonderful and effortless for us.   In a land of millions of people and many tourists, the guides slid through the crowds and found places to explore that were not as crowded as others.

Our travel company helped us coordinate visas, travel insurance, and provided tipping and shopping guidance.  Any small concern (and they were minimal) were met with a smile and addressed.  They even sent a replacement van up Longji Mountain.

I would highly recommend the travel company for your China tour.

Travel Review: Luxury Family China Vacation, Beijing, Bayan Nur, Xi'an, Guilin, Terracotta Warriors, Great Wall Hiking, Bamboo Boat

Our China travel agent did the best job possible of arranging a very complication travel schedule for my husband and I, as well as, our two daughters (one living in China) and one son in law!  We had kids coming and going at different times to meet their limited vacation/work schedules.  It wasn't easy, but our agent made it seem easy and understood what needed to be done from our first contact.  The other agency that responded (late), didn't seem to really read the information I provided to the Zicasso.com website.  Clearly, our agent read and understood what needed to be done to make our vacation work for everyone.

While we went back and forth, our agent provided excellent advice (yes, the super speed G train was an excellent choice!) and created a memorable itinerary.  We knew generally where we wanted to go (Beijing, Xi'an and Guilin), but our agent filled the itinerary with expected sightseeing (Terracotta soldiers, Forbidden City, etc.), but also fun - bike ride, cooking class, second river trip, incredible Great Wall hike (an experience, not just checking it off the list).  At each step our agent explained options, so I knew that we were selecting the best options for the amount of time that we had (it's a BIG country!).  Our agent was able to add another day of sightseeing for us in Beijing (one day notice!) after we changed our mind about having a day off our last day in Beijing (everything was so easy, that we decided we could keep going one more day!).

The hotels our agent selected were EXCELLENT!  The guides and drivers that our agent selected were fantastic!  They didn't just drop you off, they came into the hotel/airport/train station, so if anything was wrong (which it wasn't), they could have handled any problems immediately.  There was only one hiccup in the 12 day trip (amazing!), and our agent went the extra effort to make things right immediately.  We could contact our agent 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, but we also had the names and mobile numbers for all our guides/drivers ahead of time.  The guides were all knowledgeable, friendly and engaging which added greatly to our enjoyment.  They selected great restaurants and wonderful dishes.  The guides were also patient while we took many pictures.  We never felt rushed and they re-arranged our lunches twice (without skipping a beat!) because we a bit slow sightseeing.  As promised the tours were all no shopping trips.

Your overall comments on Zicasso

Not really sure how I found your website, but this was our second trip using Zicasso and I am HOOKED! I love the Zicasso system. Our first trip was to Australia in 2013. I tell everyone who wants to travel to check out the Zicasso.com website. It really works!!!!

Travel Review: Grand China Tour - Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Li River, Yangshuo

TRIP OF A LIFETIME! We're typically do-it-yourself travelers. Overall we enjoyed our times when we were on our own more than when we were with a guide. However, we did enjoy having the driver and guide for the Great Wall (Mutianyu) and the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xi'an. Plus our guide en route from Guilin to Yangshuo arranged the amazing sunset raft trip down the Li River. Having someone meet us and return us to the airports was extremely helpful, and at the train station, it was almost essential! We chose 4-star hotels in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong and 5-star hotels in Xi'an and Yangshuo (although the one booked for us in Yangshuo was at most a 3-star). We opted to eat meals on our own and had no trouble in any locale even though we spoke NO Chinese. Shanghai and Hong Kong were very easy to navigate on our own, and we loved that! More than anything we wanted to see how the people lived, and we felt we were able to do that better when we were on our own. The way we structured our trip, we were able to have plenty of time on our own while utilizing the guide services only where they were truly needed.

Overall the China travel agency delivered what was asked. Our hotels met our expectations except for the 3 nights in Yangshuo (as noted above). Prior to departure we did ask that the one in Shanghai be changed as they had us staying in Pudong originally. Most of the transfers/guide services were as expected. Our guide in Xi'an (David Xu) was exceptional; however, we rated our guide in Beijing (Michele) a 4 on a 10-point scale. We did not book any of the recommended "extras" and found that was best. We could book these locally when we arrived depending on weather, timing, etc.

Review: Family Trip to China, Beijing, Hong Kong, Xian, Forbidden City, Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, Calligraphy & TaiChi Class

Our travel agency arranged for hotels, tour guides, meals and transportation along with a detailed itinerary in Xian and Beijing (and partially in Hong Kong). This was our first time using a "distant" travel agency, one which we did not know other than what we read in TripAdvisor. It was also the first time we put down a large sum of money in advance (I'd rather pay 1/2 up front and the remainder upon completion). We were nervous we'd be taken. But it turned out all right. The hotels were top notch, very comfortable, and we couldn't have asked for better in this department. Plus the morning hotel buffet breakfasts were unbelievably lavish and varied. Our teenage kids really enjoyed them. The private tour guides were quite good - we had 2 - 1 in Xian and 1 in Beijing - and both spoke English very well. Both met us promptly upon arrival and, for the most part, were on-time and kept us moving. As for their explanations of sites, both guides were quite good, although I have to say they were not as detailed as I had hoped, but I tend to be a detail oriented person. The drivers were also good, and it was a huge load off of us to not have to worry about how to get from point A to point B. It was also a learning experience to see how crazy driving in China is! We are sure glad we didn't have to drive! All the meals outside the hotels (the lunches and dinners) were also very good. We went to local restaurants that had a great variety of wonderfully tasty food. I wonder now, in hindsight, if we didn't have someone (my husband) who could read and speak Chinese, if we would have had a more tough time of it. I seem to remember a lot of Chinese everywhere, and not so much English, but perhaps there were enough pictures/photos in the menus that we would have been able to order ok. The only down side to the food was that we had way too much of it where ever we went and I'm sure we paid a premium for all that food - I wish we could have got a discount for not so much! As far as the main event - the sites - we hit all the major spots (Tianamen, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Great Wall, Xian Pagoda, TerraCotta Warriors, etc), plus, thanks to customizing with the our travel company's gal, we did a few "smaller" teen-friendly things like take a calligraphy lesson, take a TaiChi lesson, take a table tennis lesson, see a shadow puppet show, go to street malls and bargain for junk, etc. There was only 1 stop in our itinerary which was a total waste of time/money (the tea house where they put together a medley of acts - food was terrible and the acts were so-so), but otherwise we went to over a dozen other spots/highlights/activities that were all very good. Also, 1 experience (a motorcycle tour of old Beijing) had to be cancelled due to storms, and we were given some money back, which was good (although I wonder if they gave us the whole amount). Overall, I say it was a good choice to go with this travel agency. It was professionally managed, we followed the itinerary as promised, the guides and drivers where reliable/trustworthy/pleasant, the hotels and restaurants were all good, and everything was pretty much taken care of. Sure, it was expensive, but it was a once in a lifetime experience we will remember forever.

Travel Review: Luxury Trip to China, Beijing, Xi'an, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Great Wall, Terra Cotta Warriors

Very well planned trip and we liked the guides in each city.  Our guide in Beijing was our favorite and we really enjoyed the guide in Xi'an too.   There was always someone waiting for us at each destination and the transportation/drivers also did a good job.  We got to see everything we had hoped to - the Great Wall, the Terra Cotta Warriors, the high speed train, rickshaw ride, Forbidden City, CIty Wall in Xi'an, the skyline in Shanghai, Peking duck meal in Beijing (we actually had 2), the floating restaurant in Hong Kong, the harbor in Hong Kong and more.  We also got to experience pandas in Hong Kong at the amusement park on our free day, the Chinese calligraphy class, dancing with people in the French Park in Shanghai, and the meeting with the Cricket Master in Beijing was an unexpected trip highlight.

The head of the tour company also gave us a very nice personalized gift of a stamp in Chinese of each of our names - the same stamps artists and collectors put on the art in China.  We also had our guide help us buy a full sized Terra Cotta Warrior for our garden that is going to be shipped in September.

The guides gave us great information on the life of Chinese citizens as well.  The hotels were great  in that they were very upscale and well located for our day to day adventures.   I loved having a free day in each city as well - made the pacing of the trip better than in the past where we never had a down day that allowed us to sleep in a little and experience the city on our own terms.

I was very very happy with the service overall.

Travel Review: Luxury Vacation in China, Xi'an, Shanghai, Chengdu, Great Wall, Terracotta Soldiers, Panda Experience, Local Cuisine

Our recent trip to China was outstanding.  We learned a lot about the Chinese culture and experienced the delightful food.  Our tours of the Great Wall, Terracota Soldiers, and other sites were remarkable.  Most of the travel agents were outstanding.  The best guide was our guide in Beijing.  She provided information even as we drove around, and was very attentive to our needs.  The only complaint that we have is our tour guide in Xian and the transportation in Shanghai.  The guide in Xian seemed to be inpatient and did not provide a lot of information.  He often walked ahead of us instead of with us.  Overall though, the trip was outstanding.
