Day 1

Dubrovnik – Welcome to Croatia

This morning, your airplane will descend over what some might recognize as King’s Landing from Game of Thrones. Characteristically orange roofs sit atop Baroque-style buildings, that nest together protected by the outer wall of Dubrovnik’s Old Town.  After clearing customs and collecting your baggage, a private driver will meet you and together you will enter this Medieval-feeling city. After familiarizing yourself with your first of many exquisitely luxurious hotels, you will have what remains of the day to explore Dubrovnik. In the late afternoon, you may find yourself most content at a seaside café where you can sip on a glass of local Croatian wine as the sun turns the facades of nearby buildings a dusty shade of rose. Enjoy dinner tonight at your chosen hotel, where you will feast on local specialties that revolve around daily catches, local olives and cheese. Welcome, finally, to the Mediterranean!

Detailed Description

Allow the Adriatic Sea to beckon you down from a rocky plateau and into her warm waters before you embark on adventures through Dubrovnik’s Old City. Cobblestone alleyways lead you through Baroque architecture, etched with memories from the country’s turbulent past. Here and in Split, galleries, museums and innumerable cafes spill out onto the streets around, building an excitement and energy that captures the hearts and minds of those who visit. Find magic on the Riva seaside promenade with a dish of local olives and a glass of wine as a Mediterranean breeze blows gentle across your table.

The second portion of the journey carries you deep into the region’s raw natural beauty. In Plitvice Lakes National Park, you will have an entire day to follow boardwalks as they lead you beneath spruce and fir, gradually winding towards the series of adjoining mineral-filled lakes. Shades of cobalt and turquoise will poke through the branches, and the gentle noise of rushing water will signal your proximity to nearby waterfalls. From here, you will descend into the Slovenian subterranean world, venturing deep into the Postojna caves. Surrounded by curtains, stalagmites and columns of twinkling stalactite, listen to the melody of a solo violinist as she plays in the center of the underground concert hall.  Unrivaled acoustics in this otherworldly landscape make this an unrivaled European performance.

Returning above ground; the final days of this experience are spent in the Julian Alps in the alpine town of Bled. Epitomized by a castle perched atop a cliff over electrically blue and green waters, this town attracts those with discerning, though adventurous, palates. Exclusive boutiques and Slavic museums sit against a backdrop of snowcapped peaks and endless hiking trails, providing every preference with an idyllic activity. Sample flavors of local pastries lakeside, before continuing on to the markets of Ljubljana where further savory delicacies await you. Your trip will conclude back in the streets of Zagreb, where you will have one more opportunity to sample the emergent Croatian fusion cuisine that wafts out of inventive local restaurants. Enjoy one last candlelit meal before returning with a newfound adoration for central Europe.

Luxury Croatia & Slovenia Travel Review: Lake Bled, Plitvice Lakes National Park, Zagreb, Pula, Split, Trogir, Dubrovnik, Hvar
Andrea planned a perfect two-week Croatia vacation including a visit to Slovenia to see beautiful Lake Bled. Our accommodations were spectacular, with the exception of Plitvice Lakes National Park. In her defense we were booked into the best hotel in the National Park which allowed us to walk from our hotel to entrance 2 of the park. Our private tours of Zagreb, Pula, Split & Trogir, and Dubrovnik were lead by very personable and knowledgable guides. I normally would not have done private walking tours but with COVID we wanted to take every precaution. I am now spoiled and may never go back to doing group tours in my future travels.

Bosnia, Herzegovnia, Montenegro, Croatia & Slovenia Luxury Vacation Review: Lake Bled, Rovinj, Kotor, Perast, Dubrovnik
We (group of 6) really enjoyed the tour in Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro. We stayed in Lake Bled, Rovinj, Plitvice National Park, Split and Dubrovnik and all the places visited were wonderful. The services provided by this travel team were excellent; the vehicles were in excellent conditions, the drivers/tour guides were very good and they were always ready to adjust the times if needed. All hotels and accommodations were great and we can say that all worked as planned.

Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro Vacation Review: Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Zagreb, Sarajevo, Dubrovnik, Kotor

My wife and I did a private, 13-day tour through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro with Zicasso's travel partner. We visited Ljubljana, Lake Bled, Zagreb, Plitvice Lakes National Park, Sarajevo, Mostar, Dubrovnik, and Kotor. I provided them with an outline of the cities and places I wanted to visit and they suggested several additional sites and activities that we may want to include while we visited those locations. After a couple of iterations and tweaks to the itinerary, we finalized the trip outline. Shortly thereafter, they booked our hotels to allow us to make our flight reservations way in advance. We received plenty of communications from them as our trip date approached and a detailed itinerary, with contact information for our guides and drivers, so we knew what to expect.

During the trip, there were a few surprises. When one activity had to be canceled, our travel agents got in touch with us and quickly found a more than acceptable alternative. When a tour time needed to change, they were able to reschedule all of our day's activities to reasonable times. The hotels, guides, and drivers were all excellent. They were easy to work with and we highly recommend them.

Luxury European Vacation Review: Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Split, Dubrovnik, Lake Bled, Ljubljana, Hvar

The month long trip throughout Croatia and Slovenia exceeded expectations. The itinerary was Zagreb, northern counties, Lake Bled, Ljubljana, Rovinja, Plitvice lakes, Split, Hvar, Dubrovnik and many points in between and around those areas. The terrain is beautiful, the culture tremendous, the people friendly, and the wine and food exceptional. The planning of our itinerary with this agent was half the fun and her suggestions and recommendations proved very sound. We wanted a combination of self guided and private tours. The arrangements with car rentals and cars, guides, and drivers were great. All the guides were extremely knowledgable, friendly, intelligent, and able to answer all our questions. The vehicles and drivers were first class. The wine tours and cultural tours were great and allowed us the freedom to enjoy without worrying about driving. The country is very easy to travel in and encourages tourism well. We were there from The middle of May to the middle of June. This travel agency was first rate and easily gets a 5 star rating. The 2 hours we spent on the phone with our agent ironing out details was time very well spent.

Luxury European Vacation Review: Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Split, Rovinj, Hvar, Mostar, Lake Bled

Our travel agent and travel company prepared and executed an outstanding 15 night trip in Croatia and Slovenia.  Our trip took us to Dubrovnik (3 nights), Hvar (3 nights), Split (day visit), Mostar (Bosnia), Montenegro (day visit), Trogir, (1 night), Plitvice Lakes (1 nights), Rovinj (3 nights), Ljubljana (2 nights), Lake Bled (day trip) and Zagreb (1 night).  We covered a lot of villages, but the time in each location was perfect!  We never felt rushed or bored with each location.  We stayed in small 3 and 4 star hotel/villas for the most part. However, Ljubljana and Zagreb were larger hotels.  Vehicles/drivers were always on time and all of them added their local knowledge to each of the locations.  Tours were 1 to 2 hours each and the guides were all great.  With private drivers and tours, we had the ultimate flexibility – if we decided to cut an event short, we just called the driver to come pick us up.  If we wanted to skip a castle and do a wine tour all we had to do was ask.  If we were interested in one area, the tour guides would tailor their tours to meet our interests.

Our US based agent was located in Chicago, which made it easy to coordinate flight details.  Our agent did a great job coordinating travelers from two US locations (Boston and Chicago) and getting us meet up in London, for our connecting flight to Zagreb.  Our local agent was located in Zagreb and was always available for our questions and minor change requests to our itinerary. Even though the office was closed on weekends, she was always checking her emails and we would usually get responses to requests within an hour or so.  I think I called her 6 times during our trip and she always treated me like an old friend.  She really took the time to understand all our interests, needs and concerns and prepared a fantastic trip for 7 people (one handicapped).  We brought our own wheelchair, which was a Roughrider brand.  It did well in all the towns and the cobblestones were not a big problem, but we did have to deal with some stairs in every location.   Relative to this travel agency – go with them, you won't regret it.

Travel Review: Tour of Croatia & Montenegro, Dubrovnik, Zagreb, Split, Trogir, Plitvice Lakes National Park, Lokrum

The Plitvice Lakes National Park was spectacular.  We enjoyed the tour of Split/Trogir.  The wine tasting tour and dinner on Hvar were also highlights.  The cable car ride and the walk around the top of the walls provided a different perspective of the Old Town in Dubrovnik and were well worth it.  Our tour to Montenegro was very interesting and a day well spent.
