Havana – Full Havana Immersion

Havana is a city that embraces artists and inspires music. Images and sounds combine along the Malecón, the main boulevard along the sea. Waves crash against the wall. Classic cars cruise down the streets in front of crumbling colonial buildings. Two Spanish fortresses frame the mouth of Havana Bay. You arrive at Jose Marti International Airport. Your private transfer meets you at baggage claim and escorts you into the city. At first, Cuba reminds you of any Caribbean island nation. Pastel painted buildings frame Carr. Central de Cuba. You begin to notice the little differences gradually. Murals shade the thick walls with the colors of the Cuban flag.

Pictures of Fidel Castro accompany slogans supporting the state and the ideals of socialism. On the edges of the old city, you find Plaza de Revolucion. The square covers five square miles adorned with a 59-foot statue of Jose Marti standing beneath a 358-foot tower. On the opposite end of the plaza stand two silhouettes depicting the Cuban Independence Hero Camilo Cienfuegos and Cuban Revolutionary Hero, Che Guevara. You can easily imagine thousands upon thousands of Cubans filling the square to hear Fidel Castro evoke one of his famous speeches. The American National Anthem played in the square during President Obama’s visit in March 2016. Your private transfer continues to escort you into the colonial heart of Old Havana where you can settle into your hotel.

Cuba Travel Review: Old Havana, Museums, Rum Factories, Architecture, Beach, Hemingway House, 8 Nights

The trip was wonderful! Everything was so great. I would highly recommend Zicasso’s tour company to anyone traveling to Cuba. Our guide and driver were excellent, and we really loved them. Everything was taken care of, from being picked up at the airport to meals and accommodations. This also included guided tours into dance studios, museums, rum factories, an architectural tour of Old Havana, and more! Again, I would highly recommend our travel company.

Cuba Trip Review: Varadero, Placetas, Santa Clara, Cojimar, Family Heritage, Cooking Class, Fusterlandia, 6 Nights

What a wonderful trip! Zicasso's travel agent and her team were outstanding. The trip was well planned to visit the popular Cuban cities and towns, and included a personal trip to where my son's father was born. All the tours were great. Thank you to our guide and drivers! The accommodations, restaurants, and entertainment were terrific.

Cuba Vacation Review: Havana, Trinidad, Topes de Collantes, Nature, Culture, Local Cuisine, Hiking, 8-Night Tour

We had a wonderful time in Cuba and our guide, driver, and Zicasso tour director were all very professional and welcoming! We visited beautiful sites, including Havana and Trinidad, and felt we learned something about Cuban culture.

For future travelers, please pack a flashlight, as power can intermittently go out. Cubans are prepared for this and life goes on as normal.

We were well taken care of on this trip and since it was all-inclusive, bringing a lot of extra cash was not necessary. We recommend bringing cash for tips and souvenirs.

Our tour was in a charming 1952 Chevy, equipped with AC and plenty of trunk space. The food was great, especially for seafood lovers, and there were plenty of places to hear live Cuban bands. We highly recommend this tour and this travel agency!

Cuba Vacation Review: Havana, Trinidad, Culture

We really enjoyed the trip. Havana was great and we would like to return one day. The drivers were perfect and we really appreciated their kindness and friendly faces every day. Zicasso's travel agent was friendly and took good care of everyone. We loved the Havana BnBs. The staff at both places went beyond what was required. The accommodations were lovely. The BnB at the beach was OK. However, they need to improve the seating on the beach. There were only two chairs that were comfortable and the husband of the host was using one when we arrived. We never really got to enjoy the beach because the other chairs were too hard or missing cushions. I know that it was requested that we add a day to visit this area, but in hindsight, it was too far to travel in an old car for older people. It was hard on the back. Also, unless you are interested in the beach, there isn’t much to do. I would skip that area, especially if it’s for one day.

The food was good in most every location we ate. I didn’t particularly like the dinner when we were at the beach. Sometimes the meals were too large, especially after eating a big meal for lunch and dinner. One of our favorites was the pork sandwich, which we ate on the way to Trinidad – simple and smaller. Plus, eating such large meals at lunch took a lot of time.

I think additional time for sitting in cafés and enjoying music would have been good. We really didn’t get to enjoy much local music, which was something Gary and I were looking forward to. The days were pretty full, so we would have had to eliminate something in order to do that, but I think that would have been OK.

We particularly liked the events where we were able to interact with the locals. For example, the dance school was very enjoyable. We also liked the senior center where we dropped off our donations.

We really enjoyed our time and, as I said before, we hope we can return for another visit.

In conclusion, the biggest changes I would recommend would be less time eating at lunch so we could experience more things, more time enjoying the local atmosphere (like music in the late afternoon), not trying to do too much on a trip, and not traveling too far, but it was a great trip!
