Amsterdam – Walking and Cycling the Charming Old City

Amsterdam is easy on the eyes as narrow canals form a spider’s web through the old city, each flanked by narrow townhouses and lanes made from cobbles. Churches jut above the skyline, their bells competing with the tinkle of bicycles. House doors open onto the water, reminders of when everyone traveled by boat. Amsterdam is not a big city, and the old city center – everything inside the grand canal – is easy to get around on foot, by bicycle, or on the water.

Land in Amsterdam and you will be transferred to your hotel that is on the water, a small boutique place kindling the romance of yesteryear travel. Your arrival day is flexible, and your guide will show you around, either on foot or by bicycle if you wish. A short boat cruise is best for gaining a city overview, and then later in the evening you will need to be on foot, the narrow streets too crowded for anything else. A handful of attractions can be visited should you wish, ranging from the Ann Frank House to the Heineken Museum. It’s best not to prescribe the itinerary too much on your first day, so your local guide will tailor a route dependent on your interests and your energy.

Detailed Description

Bicycle bells will provide the soundtrack on the narrow canal-side lanes of Amsterdam, while aromas of chocolate and coffee guide you through local Parisian neighborhoods and the al fresco cafe culture dominates the evenings wherever you are in Barcelona. Of course, the sights are different, and it is almost impossible to juxtapose Amsterdam’s architecture with Gaudi’s cathedral or Paris’s Montmartre. But these are not just cities with sights, however famous those sights may be. These are cities with soul, and destinations that will excite each of your senses. For while the Eiffel Tower or La Sagrada Familia may initially attract you to Europe, you will soon find a piece of each city that feels instinctively like you.

Find yourself walking in small neighborhoods, and you will find places that reflect what you like with cafes, corners, shops, and small nooks where you could sit forever and watch the world in Paris. The same happens in Amsterdam and Barcelona. You cannot visit any of these cities for the first time and miss out on the iconic attractions, but spend three days in each, and you can combine legendary sights with places you will uncover just for yourself. For while these three cities are among the most visited on the planet, there is always something very personal about them.

Your three days in each city will follow a similar pattern. Spend your first day exploring the city slowly, either on foot or by bicycle, getting to know the historical central areas. The second day in each will focus on iconic cultural and artistic highlights, and then on your third day, you can include a tour to nearby destinations so that you can gain a wider appreciation of the country. Daytime exploration is privately guided and flexible, while the evenings are free for the best time to find your own favorite part of the city and watch everyone roll by. Of course, each of these major cities could deserve more time, as three days is never going to be enough to experience it all. But three destinations in ten days means your vacation is not rushed, and still includes many dozens of highlights.

Amsterdam is charming and old-world, a superb introduction to Europe. Traveling around the city is quick, and you can easily get around everything by bike or by tram. Rembrandt and Van Gogh are among the highlights, while your day trip will take you to another city of canals, Delft, Holland’s first capital. Take the high-speed train to Paris, and you will both walk and cruise the Seine for a simple way to experience the majority of the city’s most iconic attractions. The next day will be all about the local Parisian neighborhoods and the unmissable art, and then the following day, you can choose Versailles or Champagne.

Fly to Barcelona next, and its old central quarter will allow you to relax along the Mediterranean. The following day is dedicated to Gaudi and the Modernist movement, and your day trip is to Montserrat and rural Catalonian villages. Local guides will provide recommendations for the evenings, but it is really over to you. Take a walk, see a neighborhood, check out a restaurant or café, as it is on atmospheric city evenings that you are most likely to find a piece of Europe you want to pick up and take home. And the best thing about these three cities is that everyone finds their own special place, somewhere in Europe that is instinctively you.  Consider learning more about our travelers’ favorite European travel activities by reading their Europe travel reviews.

Spain, Portugal Trip Review: Lisbon, Porto, San Sebastian, Barcelona, Seamless Travel, Wine, 10 Nights

My wife and I have been lucky enough to travel to many places around the world, but our April 2025 journey organized by Zicasso's tour company was easily one of the best. Our agent and her team thought of every detail. All we had to do was show up and enjoy these two beautiful countries!

We went to Four cities: Lisbon, Porto, San Sebastián, and Barcelona. The itineraries were thoughtfully planned to give us great experiences without wearing us out too much. And the guides in each city were fun, knowledgeable, and engaging. The transportation was always easy and on time, and the hotels were top-notch.

Spain Tour Review: Llafranc, Costa Brava, Girona, Barcelona, Dali Museum, Sagrada Familia, Park Guell, Montserrat, Tapas Tour, Hike, Winery, Flamenco, Cooking Class, 8-Day Trip

This trip was the best vacation my husband and I have ever taken! Zicasso's travel designer was excellent; he was very knowledgeable and planned the perfect itinerary. I would book another trip with him in a heartbeat! I told him we wanted to go to Barcelona and the activities we wanted to do. He was spot-on with the initial itinerary and we only needed to make minor adjustments based on additional recommendations he had.

The entire trip was very well planned out and everything went off perfectly. I wish I could do this trip all over again!

We stayed the first three nights in Llafranc, Costa Brava, which is a very lovely seaside town that our travel designer suggested. The hotel there was beautiful, pristine, and right on the beach. We went for a wonderful hike, took a day trip to the Dalí Museum, and had a wine tasting at a smaller vineyard that he suggested rather than a large, touristy one. Here, we had a private tour and tasting with the host. On our way to Barcelona we had a tour of Girona, where it was very interesting to see and learn about the history. We loved the hotel in Barcelona. It was in a great location, with many good restaurants nearby, and was also beautiful and pristine. The first night in Barcelona we saw a flamenco show that was incredible and the next day we saw Park Güell and La Sagrada Família. In the evening, we did a tapas tour through five restaurants that was so much fun. The next day, we had a cooking class, which was one of our favorite activities of the trip. The last day, we took a bus trip out to Montserrat, which is well worth seeing and only about an hour outside the city.

I was able to be in communication with our agent throughout the trip. He was always available for questions and also gave us recommendations for restaurants and bars to go to. He also made dinner/lunch reservations as needed.

All of the private guides that were hired were excellent: our guide who did our hike, our guide who took us to the Dalí Museum and Girona, and our guide who showed us Park Güell and La Família Sagrada. They were all so knowledgeable and enjoyable to be with. Even the guides when doing group activities were amazing: our guide who did the cooking class, our guide who took us to Montserrat, and our guide who did the tapas tour.

I appreciated that although our itinerary was busy, our travel designer made sure there was still free time to explore on our own. He was a pleasure to work with and made this vacation so special. The whole process of planning was very easy because of his expertise. I will definitely use him and the tour company for future trips!

Portugal, Spain Trip Review: Porto, Douro Valley, Segovia, Barcelona, Madrid, Wine Tastings, 3 Weeks

The trip itinerary and guides provided in Barcelona, Porto, the Duoro Valley, and Madrid were excellent. They were very knowledgeable, professional and personable, and spoke excellent English.

Most of the drivers were very good, but we were surprised that some of them did not provide bottled water for half-day tours (we had to ask and stop to buy it). This was a minor nuisance, but given the price of tours and previous experiences, a simple expectation, as well as having the car cooled down and AC on during hot days when being picked up.

The tour manager did an outstanding job overall, but could have improved on some specific requests that seemed to be either forgotten or missed regarding an electric scooter/wheelchair we rented that caused some issues during pick-up and drop-off. Otherwise, working with her was a very good experience.

Spain Tour Review: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Malaga, Toledo, Granada, 10 Nights

The owners of Zicasso’s tour company were amazing from start to finish. They curated a custom trip for us to Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Málaga, Toledo, and Granada. They listened to our requests and came up with a brilliant itinerary that included personal drivers, hotels, dining recommendations, and tour guides. They were also so quick to respond to our questions and pivot our plans when needed. This was a very special 30th-anniversary trip for us and they knocked it out of the park.

Spain Birthday Trip Review: Barcelona, Sevilla, Private Guides, 8-Night Tour

Our Zicasso travel agent was so personalized in his approach to making this a trip to remember. He communicated regularly and responsively, and the itinerary he created for us in Barcelona and Sevilla was exactly what we were looking for. We had the perfect blend of time with customized guides and time on our own to explore the cities.

The guides were amazing; they knew everything we could ever want to know about these two cities. We felt very special during the entire process and I could not recommend our travel team more for the very knowledgeable and articulate itinerary they created for us to see Spain. This was the best trip we have ever taken and I was there for my 50th birthday.
