Reykjavik – A Gourmet City Tour Introducing Icelandic Culture

In the shadow of the snowy mountains and draped along the water, Reykjavik is Europe’s most charming capital city. The city feels more like a village with blocks of whitewashed houses with colorful roofs and church spires that seem so insignificant against the height of nature. Touch down in the morning, and it will be a quick transfer to a waterfront hotel. Check in and check out the view, as well as the crisp outside air. Settle in, and then set off on a walk through the city alongside your guide to learn about Icelandic culture as you go.

Stop in a cafe and gaze across the water, or visit a small pub and try Iceland’s beer, while asking the questions you have always wondered about Icelanders. Continue through the city, checking out rows of color-laden houses then the church which is visible from almost all of Reykjavik. It will not take long to walk the entire city, but how long it actually takes depends on how many little pubs and cafes you stop in. End your tour at a traditional restaurant, sampling some of the delicacies you will soon come to love during this tour. As you will be on a private tour, there are many options for customization and your guide will naturally tailor the afternoon to your interests.

Detailed Description

Geysers spurt in a dramatic show of power and sound as waterfalls gush from cliffs where roads have no place. Ice shimmers like diamonds on the black sands of a distant beach, and of course, there are volcanoes as well, unruly giants that pockmark the landscape as if sentinels to another world. Welcome to Iceland, an island where nature takes over, and not just any nature, as here you will find landscapes crafted by the earth’s raw power with lava fields, glaciers, bubbling streams, and lagoons so translucent they never appear real. This best-of Iceland tour will show you the full variety of highlights in seven days and reveal what nature can create when it is left to its own devices in the middle of the Atlantic.

Landscapes always set the scene in Iceland. The environment overwhelms people so even when there are many others around, it is impossible not to be awed. However, it’s always more impressive when there are no other people around, so this handcrafted tour is private to give you the opportunity to stop in places that tour buses cannot reach or do not visit. Exclusive activities showcase remote tracts of wilderness, taking you far away from any semblance of civilization. Taking a helicopter over a geothermal is one, where you touch down on lava flows far removed from the tourist trail. Snowmobiling over a glacier is another, chance to feel the solitude that exists in Iceland’s remote corners.

This private tour has been handcrafted to incorporate Iceland’s range of natural highlights. With only seven days, it is best to focus on the south of the country. Highlights in the south are more popular as they are most easily accessible from Reykjavik, which is where the advantages of a private tour really come in. Even so, you will still spend a lot of time actually traveling from days two to four, but the journeys here are the experience with a chance to rove across the wilderness and really appreciate what nature can create. Day six then provides the downtime, a full-day lagoon spa experience surrounded by lava flows.

Your Iceland tour starts in Reykjavik, the country’s only real city, though it is more like an oversized village in reality. Spend your afternoon exploring with your local guide to get a sense of Icelandic culture while also trying out the food and beer. Day two will follow Iceland’s most iconic route, the Golden Circle. Travel to waterfalls and spurting geysers, and then onto a glacier where you can snowmobile into the distance. Head to the South Coast on day three, where rainbows circle in misty waterfalls and rock formations provide surreal photos. You will spend this and the next night in Vik, where Atlantic waves crash against black sand in Iceland’s southernmost village.

Day four will be a bumpy ride to and from the country’s southeastern corner. Experience the Glacier Lagoon on a boat tour, and then walk across Diamond beach, where ice glistens on black volcanic sands. It will likely be just as bumpy as you go off road on day five as your guide takes you around the slopes of Eyjafjallajokull volcano, where hidden canyons are reached by splashing over glacial rivers. It will be quite an adventure, and by the time you reach Reykjavik, you will probably be ready for some quiet time. Spend the next day in the spa, and then helicopter over Iceland’s high geothermal area on day seven, touching down in places few others venture for the crowning highlight to seven days in Iceland. Consider learning more about our travelers’ best Iceland vacation experiences by reading their Iceland travel reviews.

Travel Review: Iceland Tour, Reykjavik, Thorsmork, Vik, Blue Lagoon, Valley of Thor, Eyjafjallajokull Glacier, Geysir Hot Spring
Our vacation, and the guide exceeded all of our expectations! We saw so much of the southern part of Iceland in 6 days which was perfect for us. We had a private guide for the entire trip, and our guide took us everywhere in his jacked up Land Rover with giant tires capable of driving through rivers, lava fields, and on beaches! Our guide was so knowledgeable about the people, culture, and land, and we felt like we really knew the country and had made a real friend by the time we left. Having a private guide and being able to go where and when we wanted was awesome, and our guide went over and above to make sure we saw the highlights as well as less seen places, and he kept an eye on the Aurora forecast, and got us to a very dark place where we were lucky enough to see a spectacular show! Our stops included, the Blue Lagoon which was a great way to start our vacation after taking the red eye from the US. It's a tourist stop, but worth going to since it takes 20 years off of your body- so they say! We went 400 feet inside of a 4000 year old volcano which was an awesome experience. We saw multiple waterfalls- Gljufrabui, Seljalandsfoss, Hraunfossar, and the Golden, and all were worth the hike. In Thorsmork we went to Thor's Ravine, an awesome canyon and a pretty good hike. Eyjafjallajokull Glacier is the one that erupted in 2010, and it's stunning. We spent 2 nights in Vik, and traveled around from there, and 3 nights total in Reykjavik, which is a great little town with restaurants and bars and a harbor. We took a zodiac boat ride on a glacial lagoon, and got up close and personal with the glacier. We drove the Kaldidalur Mountain Pass between glaciers, and went into the Langiokull Glacier through a manmade ice cave. Finally, we went on to the Golden Circle, with it's three main attractions- Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Hot Spring, and the Golden Waterfall. I planned the entire trip with the owner of the travel company, and he tailored the trip specifically to my family. We emailed and had one 45 minute phone call, and he had the entire trip planned including hotel reservations, reservations at attractions, and he even suggested and made dinner reservations for us. Also, he and his wife gave us weather forecasts, tips for clothing, and answered any other questions and concerns, and always responded almost immediately. I would totally recommend Zicasso, who asks a bunch of questions so they can pair you with 3 highly rated travel agencies, and follows up with you, and the travel company- an awesome travel agency who planned a trip that exceeded all of our expectations!

Travel Review: Family Trip to Iceland, Reykjavik, Thorsmork, Geysir, Gullfoss, Jokulsarlon & Thingvellir National Parks

Our guide was great.  He met us at Keflavik Airport at 4:50 AM in his 17 passenger mini-bus, showed us a lavafield on our way to the Blue Lagoon, and took us to a very nice breakfast at a small café in Grindavik, before taking us to our hotel in Reykjavik which had a great fish and chip on the menu.

Iceland was a great trip and our guide was a great guide for it.  We were a family of 5, ages 16 to 85, and Our guide was able to accommodate all of us.  My wife and mom were not up for the more challenging hikes, so he got them to lunch and a museum.  My son wanted to get the morning light for his camera, so he was in the lobby on two mornings at 3 AM.  My other son forgot his toiletries bag in one of the 8 hotels we stayed in, so our guide coordinated with his niece to have the bag delivered to us before we got on the plane. Lastly, I have an interest in the sagas, Njal's Saga in particular, so our guide got me to the site of the Njal burning (which was not easy), the saga museum, and various landmarks along the way.  Also, waterfalls, a hike on the glacier, a hike in the glacier, in a cave, Thingvellir, Thorsmork, Geysir, Guilfoss, Reynisfjara, Jokulsarlon, and more.  Stops at Bonus, souvenirs, the new Iceland Costco?  No problem!

It was also a great help to have him as a driver.  If you want to see the scenery, you're going to have to drive out, in a country on the metric system, where you might not see another car for an hour.  Our drivers knew which one lane road or dirt road was the right road, and that is  tricky if you're not a native.

Iceland Travel Review: 7-Days in Reykjavik, Golden Circle, Glaciers, Waterfalls
I chose our travel specialist based on reviews I read on Trip Advisor. Arnar worked with me to design a 7-day trip for my husband and I. He was flexible and thoughtful with his planning and our tour guide was so full of knowledge. You would never know that English was not his first language. It was a great way to learn about the country without being lectured to. He also turned out to be a fabulous photographer who took great photos of my husband and I.We visited the Blue Lagoon first thing which was an awesome experience especially in winter. We had a nice balance of "tours" and alone time to explore Reykjavik. 4 days of private tours:Golden Circle Adventure which we stopped at a tomato farm for an AMAZING lunch! Also did the Lava Tube Cave.Thorsmork & Eyafjallakull Adventure where we did a snowmobiling trip on Eyjafjallokull Glacier. Such a blast!Jokulsarlon Glacier Adventure. We had planned to go on a glacier hike, but after speaking with people on our snowmobiling trip we decided to go hike to an ice cave. Arnar was able to make this happen with the help of our guide. It was such a site!WaterFalls & Volcanoes Adventure. The weather was so bad that the activity we had planned, which was an ATV Tour, was cancelled. Our guide quickly came up with a new plan. We went to an Interactive Volcano and Earthquake Exhibition.  It was fascinating to learn all about the different types of volcanoes and to better understand the explosive history of this extraordinary country. Then to a local restaurant that he knew. The accommodation in Reykjavik that he chose was in a great location. Really modern and chic hotel with lovely hotel rooms. Located in the center of the town well placed for restaurants and bars. The accommodation in Vik was a very basic accommodation. Breakfast was good, they had nice home baked bread and waffles. Because of the distance from other places our guide was able to take us to see the Northern Lights which were spectacular!Overall it was an AWESOME vacation and would definitely recommend our travel specialist.

Iceland Review, Snaefellsnes Peninsula, Thingvellir National Park, Glacier Hike & Lagoon, Whale Watching, Hikes & Speedboats
Fantastic!!!!This trip was the easiest, most worry-free, most fun, and exhilarating trip we could ever imagine. We booked with this travel team because we are not experienced world travelers. We did not want the hassle of trying to drive ourselves and squeeze a lot of activities into our days when we were unfamiliar with the country. We did the West and South Iceland Adventure over 8 days with our most excellent guide in a capable and comfortable Range Rover. We were able to see all of the "regular" spectacular scenery in Reykjavik, on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, the Golden Circle, the South Coast, and the Jokulsarlon Glacier and Glacier Lagoon. We stayed in stunningly beautiful and comfortable small hotels with famously wonderful restaurants and breakfasts included. We especially loved the Whale watching on fast Rib speedboats in the Reykjavik harbor, the Glacier Walk on the Jokulsarlon Glacier, and the Glacier Lagoon boat ride. We were thrilled that our guide made adjustments to our scheduled days to accommodate more or less time at certain attractions and to add time for a beer or two at several local breweries along our routes. He also took us to some beautiful spots for short hikes--along the coastline, through a beautiful gorge, and from waterfall to waterfall! I would highly recommend this travel team to anyone wanting to see Iceland!!!

Luxury Family Trip to Iceland Review: Reykjavik, Vik, ATV Ride on Black Beach, Glacier Lagoon

The trip was fantastic! We loved Reykjavik and the entire country. Highlights included driving on the glacier to Into the Glacier, ATVs on the black beaches and the glacier hike. Also, really liked the food tour and glacier lagoon. The best part of the trip was our guide. He really bonded with us and our kids. He was a great driver and guide and we all really got a good sense of the country through him. I didn't realize how much time we were going to spend with him and I'm happy that he was so easy going, personable and knowledgeable.

All of the restaurants you recommended were very good albeit pretty expensive (which we knew coming in). As far as hotels, we really like the Hotel in Vik. Our second apartment in Reykjavik was great. It was in the newer building and was very large and new. Our first apartment was a little cramped and slightly dated.

The trip was super organized and we felt like we saw a lot of the country in only 8 days. I would recommend your company without any reservation.
