Vik – Fly to Keflavik and Enjoy a Scenic Drive to the Southern Village of Vik

Land at Keflavik International Airport on the Reykjavik Peninsula as the short blades of grass around the runway expand across the flatlands. Your private transfer meets you at baggage claim to begin your journey through the stunning landscape of Iceland, first to the southern village of Vik. Your introduction to the landscape comes at Skogafoss Waterfall, your first stop on the scenic drive to Vik. The rectangular stream wraps around the horn of the mossy cliff nearly 200 feet wide and trundling down from a height of 82 feet; the water crashes into the waiting pool with thunderous crashes.

Rainbows glint in the beads of moisture. From the top of the precarious cliff,  view the falls and look out to the recesses of the Atlantic Ocean. The closer you get to the village of Vik, the more the landscape reveals its natural majesty. Dyrhólaey is a small peninsula located on the south coast of the country; a large black arch of lava protrudes from the sea giving the region its name, which means, “door-hole.” In summer, puffins nest on the cliff faces and soar over the cobalt sea in search of food. When you reach Vik, the salty aroma of the sea blends with the earthy scent of the grassland and cliffs encircling the village

Detailed Description

Once in Iceland, the majesty is palpable and the unique landscape is tangible. Your 14-day tour inspires you to bird watch and explore geology, it encourages you to hike, supports a daily scenic drive and creates an elaborate symphony of the elements. Geysers erupt hundreds of feet into the air; waves crash against outcroppings with naturally carved arches cut into the rocks. Volcanoes mark contemporary and ancient history across the countryside as seals bask in the spreading sunlight.  Wildflowers blossom, contrasting with the rugged cliffs as each moment is personal, disarming, and unforgettable.

The adventure begins with your arrival at Keflavik International Airport. Your private transfer will meet you at baggage claim and lead you south to the village of Vik. En route to Vik, enjoy your first image of Iceland at Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss Waterfalls and visit the small church that watches over the town. Next day, stroll along the basalt beach and see the Dyrhólaey Arch, along with the stunning cliffs known as Reynishverfi Rocks. En route to the town of Hofn, your scenic drive takes you along Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon and the mossy lava rocks.

Visit Jokulsarlon Lagoon and trek through Skaftafell National Park. Closer to Hofn, explore a series of ice caves. Then take your time in the small town of Seydisfjordur, with its panoramic view of Dyrfjoll Mountains and an immersive look at the culture of eastern Iceland. Drive along the Laekjavik Coast, and enjoy the scenic village of Djúpivogur en route to the city of Egilsstaðir. Then move into the sensational region of Lake Myvatn, home to the Krafla Power Station and the stunning Hverfjall Crater.

Explore the splendor of the region with the Myvatn Nature Baths.  Witness the power and grace of Dettifoss Waterfall before traveling to the town of Hvammstangi, your base as you explore the fjords. Before you reach the quiet town, stop at the delightful city of Akureyri and see the wondrous cascades at Aldeyjarfoss and Godafoss. Stop at a local farm at lunch to watch the horses trot along the landscape.

Trek across the fjords to discover the immense magnificence of the meandering water and pure landscape. Visit the Holmavik Museum of Witchcraft and Wizardry, along with a historic shipwreck. Next, drive to Reykjavik for a memorable helicopter ride over the Golden Circle. Witness erupting geysers and thundering waterfalls in this region of Icelandic history, all from above. Then venture out to the famous Blue Lagoon for a soothing dip in the geothermal water before making your way to Keflavik International Airport for your flight home.

Travel Review: Iceland Tour, Reykjavik, Thorsmork, Vik, Blue Lagoon, Valley of Thor, Eyjafjallajokull Glacier, Geysir Hot Spring
Our vacation, and the guide exceeded all of our expectations! We saw so much of the southern part of Iceland in 6 days which was perfect for us. We had a private guide for the entire trip, and our guide took us everywhere in his jacked up Land Rover with giant tires capable of driving through rivers, lava fields, and on beaches! Our guide was so knowledgeable about the people, culture, and land, and we felt like we really knew the country and had made a real friend by the time we left. Having a private guide and being able to go where and when we wanted was awesome, and our guide went over and above to make sure we saw the highlights as well as less seen places, and he kept an eye on the Aurora forecast, and got us to a very dark place where we were lucky enough to see a spectacular show! Our stops included, the Blue Lagoon which was a great way to start our vacation after taking the red eye from the US. It's a tourist stop, but worth going to since it takes 20 years off of your body- so they say! We went 400 feet inside of a 4000 year old volcano which was an awesome experience. We saw multiple waterfalls- Gljufrabui, Seljalandsfoss, Hraunfossar, and the Golden, and all were worth the hike. In Thorsmork we went to Thor's Ravine, an awesome canyon and a pretty good hike. Eyjafjallajokull Glacier is the one that erupted in 2010, and it's stunning. We spent 2 nights in Vik, and traveled around from there, and 3 nights total in Reykjavik, which is a great little town with restaurants and bars and a harbor. We took a zodiac boat ride on a glacial lagoon, and got up close and personal with the glacier. We drove the Kaldidalur Mountain Pass between glaciers, and went into the Langiokull Glacier through a manmade ice cave. Finally, we went on to the Golden Circle, with it's three main attractions- Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Hot Spring, and the Golden Waterfall. I planned the entire trip with the owner of the travel company, and he tailored the trip specifically to my family. We emailed and had one 45 minute phone call, and he had the entire trip planned including hotel reservations, reservations at attractions, and he even suggested and made dinner reservations for us. Also, he and his wife gave us weather forecasts, tips for clothing, and answered any other questions and concerns, and always responded almost immediately. I would totally recommend Zicasso, who asks a bunch of questions so they can pair you with 3 highly rated travel agencies, and follows up with you, and the travel company- an awesome travel agency who planned a trip that exceeded all of our expectations!

Review: Iceland, Grindavík, Husafell Stone, Icelandic Horses, Hiking Glaciers, Waterfalls, Museums
Our guide was amazing and full of awesome information. The hotels were awesome. The breakfast at the hotel was amazing. Especially at the hotel in Grindavík. Even though we got there late due to our air travel being delayed, we were able to fit everything we wanted to see in. It was especially awesome when our guide surprised us with a trip to the Hisafell Stone.

Travel Review: Family Trip to Iceland, Reykjavik, Thorsmork, Geysir, Gullfoss, Jokulsarlon & Thingvellir National Parks

Our guide was great.  He met us at Keflavik Airport at 4:50 AM in his 17 passenger mini-bus, showed us a lavafield on our way to the Blue Lagoon, and took us to a very nice breakfast at a small café in Grindavik, before taking us to our hotel in Reykjavik which had a great fish and chip on the menu.

Iceland was a great trip and our guide was a great guide for it.  We were a family of 5, ages 16 to 85, and Our guide was able to accommodate all of us.  My wife and mom were not up for the more challenging hikes, so he got them to lunch and a museum.  My son wanted to get the morning light for his camera, so he was in the lobby on two mornings at 3 AM.  My other son forgot his toiletries bag in one of the 8 hotels we stayed in, so our guide coordinated with his niece to have the bag delivered to us before we got on the plane. Lastly, I have an interest in the sagas, Njal's Saga in particular, so our guide got me to the site of the Njal burning (which was not easy), the saga museum, and various landmarks along the way.  Also, waterfalls, a hike on the glacier, a hike in the glacier, in a cave, Thingvellir, Thorsmork, Geysir, Guilfoss, Reynisfjara, Jokulsarlon, and more.  Stops at Bonus, souvenirs, the new Iceland Costco?  No problem!

It was also a great help to have him as a driver.  If you want to see the scenery, you're going to have to drive out, in a country on the metric system, where you might not see another car for an hour.  Our drivers knew which one lane road or dirt road was the right road, and that is  tricky if you're not a native.

Iceland Travel Review: 7-Days in Reykjavik, Golden Circle, Glaciers, Waterfalls
I chose our travel specialist based on reviews I read on Trip Advisor. Arnar worked with me to design a 7-day trip for my husband and I. He was flexible and thoughtful with his planning and our tour guide was so full of knowledge. You would never know that English was not his first language. It was a great way to learn about the country without being lectured to. He also turned out to be a fabulous photographer who took great photos of my husband and I.We visited the Blue Lagoon first thing which was an awesome experience especially in winter. We had a nice balance of "tours" and alone time to explore Reykjavik. 4 days of private tours:Golden Circle Adventure which we stopped at a tomato farm for an AMAZING lunch! Also did the Lava Tube Cave.Thorsmork & Eyafjallakull Adventure where we did a snowmobiling trip on Eyjafjallokull Glacier. Such a blast!Jokulsarlon Glacier Adventure. We had planned to go on a glacier hike, but after speaking with people on our snowmobiling trip we decided to go hike to an ice cave. Arnar was able to make this happen with the help of our guide. It was such a site!WaterFalls & Volcanoes Adventure. The weather was so bad that the activity we had planned, which was an ATV Tour, was cancelled. Our guide quickly came up with a new plan. We went to an Interactive Volcano and Earthquake Exhibition.  It was fascinating to learn all about the different types of volcanoes and to better understand the explosive history of this extraordinary country. Then to a local restaurant that he knew. The accommodation in Reykjavik that he chose was in a great location. Really modern and chic hotel with lovely hotel rooms. Located in the center of the town well placed for restaurants and bars. The accommodation in Vik was a very basic accommodation. Breakfast was good, they had nice home baked bread and waffles. Because of the distance from other places our guide was able to take us to see the Northern Lights which were spectacular!Overall it was an AWESOME vacation and would definitely recommend our travel specialist.

Iceland Vacation Review: Reykjavík, Akureyri, Nature, Waterfalls, Glaciers, Whale Watching

First of all, Iceland is strikingly beautiful. We went from Reykjavík along the southern coast, then north along eastern Iceland, all the way north to Akureyri. We snorkeled in two-degree water, hiked with an ice pick in hand on a glacier, and saw countless whales and waterfalls. It was magnificent! The trip was well planned and fabulously executed. Thanks to our Zicasso travel team, it was stress-free.

Iceland Vacation Review: Glacier Hiking, Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Skaftafell, Vík í Mýrdal, Snæfellsnes, Silfra, Snorkeling

The trip was great overall.

Plus points:

Zicasso’s travel agency took time to plan the whole trip meticulously. It included all the attractions we asked for and wanted to cover. We received timely responses to all inquiries.

Issues/areas for improvement:

The south coast trip, per the detailed itinerary, was to begin at 9am, but the tour guide/driver came at 8am, saying he had information for an 8am pick-up.

The amphibious boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon was only half an hour, whereas the itinerary said it was one hour 20 minutes.

Skaftafell Natural Reserve and Vík í Mýrdal town were included in the itinerary. However, the driver said the natural reserve tour took around two hours to hike and we didn’t have enough time. We just drove through Vík town. The driver said there was really nothing to walk around and look at and also a lack of time. He said the planner included a lot of items and there was definitely not enough time to cover everything as the south coast tour involved 500-plus kilometers of driving. He suggested we definitely bring this to your notice.

On the Snæfellsnes peninsula tour, more time was needed for the Gatklettur stone arch. It was a little rushed and, in terms of different viewing points and attractions, not properly explained. The time for Ytri Tunga and the Búðir church should have been shortened.

The Silfra snorkeling tour was allocated five hours and 30 minutes, but took an extra one hour and 30 minutes, and the hotel charged storage fees to move bags from the room to the storage area.

Except for the above areas of improvement, I must say that, overall, it was a very good trip experience and I would recommend it to family and friends without any hesitation.

Thank you.
