Varanasi – Immersed in Hinduism's Most Sacred City
As you wander the city of Varanasi, it is like watching a phantom enchant on the dance floor. The whole city is doused in mystique, and no two seconds are ever the same as the cycle of life and death plays out on labyrinthine lanes. An exotic sight appears before you, and then it's gone. Turn around, and there's another. Funeral processions weave through the streets as they carry bodies wrapped in white cloth and flowers. Headed to the Burning Ghat, the most revered funeral place in the Hindu religion, the holy babas walk about the city, eyes lost in the haze. Great lines of pilgrims enter the temple as they wander beneath the archways adorned by elephant and monkey gods. It's often said that India is an overwhelming experience for the senses. Varanasi, the holiest Hindu city in the world, is where this feeling is magnetized.
But before your wanderings begin, your guide will pick you up at the airport and guide you to your luxury hotel on the edge of the city. Take your time and allow the city unfold from your rooftop terrace; children fly their kites as the smells of incense float through the air with the passing shouts of chai wallahs (sellers). Your guide will take you through the maze-like alleys, most of them barely wide enough for two cows to pass, which causes a strange problem when the cows decide to stop and lie on the ground. There are countless spiritual sites in Varanasi, but for today, the tour will be about getting your bearings to take in the unending enchantment of the city. As well as walking through the maze, your guide will know a couple of excellent spots to watch the world roll past with a fresh fruit smoothie in hand.

Detailed Description
Myanmar and India are countries that dance on a carpet of spirituality and float on a breeze of tranquility. Ceremonies continually play out along revered rivers; pilgrims reveal beautiful faces of emotion, and there's a sublime sense of history and heritage. Their proverbial beat is drummed by the narrative of legends, enigmatic tales whose fire has never been relinquished. Some stories are fables, others sound like myths, yet each has a symbolism that connects everyone to the ancient world. Mystique is everywhere; it echoes through the trees of India and blows across the golden mountaintops of Myanmar. This itinerary is not just about sightseeing, even though you'll encounter some of the finest sights in Asia; rather it’s an immersive tour as it intimately reveals the spirituality that inhabits the legend of India and Myanmar, Buddhism, and Hinduism.
This unique journey combines several days in Northern India and then several more Myanmar. Start in the Hindu holy city of Varanasi, where ceremonies never cease along the River Ganges. Bathed in charisma, the ancient town is a place where holy men dance with candles and enchanting funeral processions weave down to the Burning Ghat. Travel to Bodh Gaya, the birthplace of Buddhism. Explore the essential places from Buddha's life, like the tree where he obtained enlightenment and where he spent his last day as an ordinary person. Buddhism's first monastery is here, along with the world's oldest university and the cave where Buddha meditated for six years. It's all wrapped in a moving atmosphere, with hundreds of local pilgrims serenely moving through the sites.
Travel to Myanmar and Bagan, where 2,300 temples and pagodas rise like phantoms along dusty plains. Golden Buddhas hide in some, ornate carvings dominate the archways, and almost everything is untouched since the 12th-century. Arguably Asia's most astonishing site, the mind-boggling proliferation of temples complemented by an exquisitely carved detail is throughout Bagan. Next, discover the gold and spirituality of Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, another Buddhist site laced in legend before your journey to the Kyaikhtiyo Mountain, where a golden rock balances precariously on a strand of Buddha's hair. It seems to defy gravity, perpetually appearing to be rolling down the hill. It's the most important pilgrimage site in a country that is almost exclusively Buddhist. Completing the tour is a visit to Bago, the 15th-century capital of the Mon Kingdom and a delightful ode to history.
The sights and scenery are spectacular, but it's the atmosphere provided by the visiting pilgrims that can never be forgotten. This feeling cannot be photographed but it is thoroughly felt, and it envelopes you totally on every stage of this vacation. These feelings are magnified throughout your ten-day journey as you discover the most spiritually poignant places in a land that always evokes the spirits.

My trip was not organized very well, and although I had paid to be in 4 or 5 stars accommodations at times they felt more like 1 star accommodations. In Varanasi, the hotel room had mold on the walls, no hot water, and the room was dirty and infested with bugs. Although, my travel company knew that there was curfew in Varanasi, the day I had arrived there, they neglected to inform me about it, and to arrange for another hotel to stay in. Because of the curfew, no car was allowed to drive in the center of the city. In Judhpur, the hotel provided his guests ear plugs. Even with the ear plugs I could not sleep there because it was so noisy. All night i could hear dogs barks, goats and the hum and drum of the old city. Who wants to be stuck in the noisy old city when there are plenty of others hotels with beautiful gardens and quit rooms like the hotels by by Taj. In Bhuj the room in my hotel was unacceptable. All the rooms on the entire floor, except mine where being remodeled and in a process of being painted. There was a strong smelly paint smell all over the floor that felt like poison, and I had to asked the staff at the reception to tell the construction workers to stop to work at 22:30 because they kept working and knocking on the walls at all hours. In Mumbai, my travel company booked me a small noisy room at the tower of the Taj Mahl hotel. needless to say, that the receptionist at Taj hotel upgraded my room and changed my room to the Palace side of the hotel, where the rooms, are larger and much quieter. When I stayed at Aurangabad for two nights, although my flight to Mumbai was schedules only to 21:00 at night, no late check out was arranged for me. I arranged it myself and paid extra myself.
When I was traveling in Rajasthan, During my stay in Ranthambore, I found out that my driver was drunk and could not drive me back to my hotel. The drunk driver demanded a cut in one of the textile stores I had placed an order. Since the driver was drunk, he could not drive my husband and me to Jaipur. Another Driver had to be found and our trip got delayed. The drunk driver was dismissed later from the travel company.
The inner flights in India were also organized very badly. Instead of booking all our flights with Air India which would have allowed us to have 25KG for person, since we have Star alliance membership, most of our flights were booked with chipper airlines that only allow each person 15 KG. The 15 kg is not just for the checked in luggage, it is a combination of the checked luggage plus all the hand bags. We ended paying thousands of Rupees extra for our luggage.
Although I was billed and paid to a luxurious trip, my travel company cut in every corner and booked us a trip in a one to two stars many nights of the trip.

As promised, here is a follow up on my trip.First, a big thank you to my planner for the book, Burma: Rivers of Flavor, it is super and I will challenge myself to create some of the recipes.I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Myanmar. I had an excellent, informative guide and a delightful companion. I had no idea that she would accompany me throughout the trip, but I am happy she did. Most everything about the trip was delightful, and the balloon ride exceptional. Perhaps the only thing lacking was that which was in your brochure which stated meeting with local dignitaries or a cooking lesson. The temples were beautiful but by the third day in Bagan I was ready for something a bit different. As I was a solo traveller, my guide accomodated a slight change and we went into town, had a massage and I was delighted and grateful.I thank you for organizing an unforgettable experience.

I cannot recommend the Zicasso travel partner enough! Our tour operator made the whole process easy and a once-in-a-lifetime experience affordable. Delhi, the airports, and Varanasi would have been challenging to navigate without the expert guides who made person-to-person handoffs from the minute we stepped off the plane. Our kids (older teens) were very jet lagged and not feeling well the first few days (the pollution is significant), so we needed some itinerary adjustments. These were quick and seamless, and our travel agent was even able to swap days/activities on the fly.
Everyone was so accommodating; we really appreciated it. We always felt safe and enjoyed truly authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences, such as spiritual Varanasi’s Ganges River ceremonies and the ISKCON temple in Vrindavan.

My husband and I had an extraordinary trip to Nepal and India, thanks to our travel agency. We told them where we wanted to go, and what we wanted to see, and they planned it perfectly for us. The hotels they found for us were excellent. The one in Varanasi was right on the Ganges. We just had to step out of our room in the morning and watch the sun rise! The one in Jaipur looked like something out of the Arabian Nights! We even heard the Imam singing the evening and morning prayers out our window.
The guides were all very knowledgeable and accommodating. I mentioned an interest in Hanuman and the guide told me there was a temple to him close by and took us there. It wasn't on the itinerary, but he fit it in for us. The drivers were amazing! There were no traffic lights in most places, and they had to deal with cows, camels, horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, monkeys, pigs and dogs roaming in the roads, not to mention the traffic. We took a train from Jhansi to Agra, and we were taken to the station and a representative waited with us, made sure we got on the right train, and that a porter would get us off in Agra. We weren't expecting that level of service! Same with airports. A representative always waited until we were through security before leaving.

This travel agent did a great job from the first day we communicated though to the end of our trip. All was executed as agreed to. Her recommendations, guides, useful travel notes helped make our trip so memorable. We traveled to Mumbai, Varanasi, Sarnath, Agra, Jaipur, Chhatra Sagar, Udaipur, and Delhi. We had the perfect timing to participate in the Diwali Festival in Udaipur which was colorful and wonderful to see the local customs surrounding this event. We then traveled onto Bhutan. Sitting on the Northern side of the flight from Delhi to Thimphu gave us a birds eye view of Mount Everest - spectacular!! The food on the trip was over the top wonderful. The drivers & tour guides our travel agent arranged were top notch, polite and friendly - all our needs were and more. We stayed at all 5 star hotels which was the only way to go - we should have scheduled more time to take in this one of a kind worldly hotels.
