Palermo – Cultures on Parade

Palermo’s beauty stretches from the glittering coastline to the jovial markets. The city encompasses a Norman palace and Arabian mosque, Spanish flair and elements of French cuisine. Your private transfer meets you at the airport upon your arrival and escorts you to your hotel situated near the heart of the city. You find the aroma of orange citrus blending with the salty sea breeze. Palm trees sway and linger alongside ancient cobbled streets.

The Cathedral was erected in the 12th-century with three apses, round arches, and a curved parapet on the east façade maintaining the original Norman attributes. The 15th-century entrance overlooks the central square where you find an Arabic inscription on a single column commemorating the mosque. Inside the cathedral, the grandeur continues, inspiring visitors and locals with the blending of international styles that somehow flow effortlessly together. The sarcophagi of the Hohenstaufen dynasty remain in the first two chapels you come across, constructed of large-grain crystalized Egyptian rock. In the 18th-century, the tombs were excavated, finding the opulent crown of Constance of Aragon, decorated with strings of pearls and precious stones that glisten in the light. The cathedral embodies Palermo and the entire island of Sicily, at once Italian, but also uniquely international.

Detailed Description

Sicily is an island that encompasses millennia and spans global cultures from coast to coast. Your 8-day Sicily tour takes you through the exceptional history around the island, from the Valley of the Temples to the bronze warrior statues in Reggio Calabria. Visit the largest city in antiquity and stroll through the open-air markets to find traditional cuisine and amalgamated culture between historic buildings. When in Sicily, it feels like you have arrived in the ancient and medieval center of the world, where the beauty of the past continues to influence the island today. Be sure to read the Sicily travel reviews on Zicasso for more information and ideas.

Arrive in Palermo, where your stunning historical tour of the island begins. The city showcases its past through the narrow streets and architectural designs etched into the buildings meandering to the natural harbor. Make your way out of the city, following the coastal road to Cefalu to see the Norman Cathedral and a medieval washhouse carved into the rockface. Near Piazza Armerina, you find the exquisite ruins of Villa Romana del Casale and the preserved mosaics decorating the interior of the Roman palace.

Your guide leads you to Mount Etna where you can venture up the mountainside to experience the view atop the largest active volcano in Europe. Continue onward to Taormina to see the Greek Theater and quaint, tiny cobbled streets of the city. The following day you make your way to Reggio Calabria, home to the Bronze Warrior statues. Next is a tour of the ancient and Baroque wonders remaining in the city of Siracusa. Ragusa maintains a proud connection to its Baroque architecture where you can wander through the lavish décor before discovering the breathtaking ruins at the Valley of the Temples.

Travel to Segesta to witness the remains of what could have been the largest Doric Temple ever erected, standing against the sloping landscape. In Erice, you find the luxuries of modern Italy hidden inside medieval structures. Once in Trapani, you can relax in the ancient town set on the hilltop overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Return to Palermo where you have a full day guided tour of the city’s remarkable highlights, from the Cathedral to the Royal Palace. On your last morning, your private transfer meets you at the hotel and escorts you to the Falcone-Borsellino Airport for your flight home.

Italy Tour Review: Sicily, Taormina, Agrigento, Palermo, Cefalu, Mount Etna, Erice, Castelbuono, Savoca, Valley of the Greek Temples, Wine Tour, Godfather Experience, Farm Cooking Class, Cheese and Pastry Tastings, 7 Nights

Zicasso’s travel professional crafted an unforgettable Sicily trip for our group of seven. After discussing our preferences, she designed a flawless itinerary, incorporating unique experiences that became trip highlights. Her communication was exceptional, with prompt responses to our questions before the trip and daily updates for the next day's activities, including driver and guide details, which were incredibly helpful.

We stayed at superb hotels in Taormina, Agrigento, Palermo, and Cefalù, each with stunning views and private tours. Sicily’s warm, hospitable people stood out compared to other European destinations. At our hotel on Via Leonardo da Vinci in Taormina, the staff greeted us warmly, setting a perfect tone. Other stops included Mount Etna, Erice, Castelbuono, and Savoca. All of these locations were great, but don't miss Castelbuono!

Two standout experiences were private meals with families. Near Erice, a chef and his family welcomed us into their sea-view home, preparing amazing Sicilian meals that felt like dining with family. In Palermo, another home chef and her husband created a similarly memorable evening, with lots of great conversation and stories.

Every driver was professional, friendly, and informative, while our guides — often archaeologists or historians — were engaging and knowledgeable.

Highlights included a welcome dinner in Taormina, a farm cooking class, two wine tours with lunch, a Mount Etna hike, a Valley of the Greek Temples tour, town and village tours, cheese and pastry tastings near Cefalù, and a farewell dinner. The Godfather tour in Savoca was special, with our guide introducing us to a local who played Apollonia’s mother, waving from her balcony.

Our travel professional's meticulous planning and personal touches made this trip extraordinary. Thanks to Zicasso for matching us with the tour company and we highly recommend them for a perfect Sicilian/Italian adventure!

Italy Vacation Review: Taormina, Cefalu, Palermo, Ortigia Island, Catania, Mount Etna, Cooking Class, Winery Visit, 9 Nights

I was connected with the travel company through Zicasso. What an amazing trip! Many thanks to our travel designer of the travel company!!!

Our travel designer and her expert team planned a trip to Sicily for my husband and I, my siblings, and my sister-in-law. We were six and everything about the trip was executed beautifully and with great attention to every detail.

We chose to go to Taormina, Cefalù, Palermo, and Ortigia Island, flying direct in and out of Catania. Our travel designer arranged all transfers by private van for the six of us and we never had to worry where or when we were going anywhere. She was able to make changes on the spot and accommodate our every wish.

Planning the trip was so easy, as she was available to chat with me on the weekends to answer questions and clarify details. She even made dinner reservations in every city. I cannot say enough about her willingness to be available and the choices she helped us make. From the terrific winery near Mount Etna to a drive up Etna, guided tours (we had an incredibly fabulous art historian showing us the churches of Palermo), a day at leisure on the beaches of Cefalù, and an amazing cooking class in Palermo, where we learned about and visited the markets, and made pasta and cannoli, every experience was better than the one before it.

We definitely recommend, with five stars, the travel company. Have them plan your trip to Italy! This was my first time back to Europe since 2004 and it was stellar!

I surely will use this company when I plan new trips to Italy, and Zicasso as well!

When we were trying to decide where to go, we chatted with travel partners in several European destinations. Zicasso chooses the best of the best and our experiences with each of them was exceptional!

We will be back to Zicasso when we travel to other destinations!!

Italy Travel Review: Taormina, Syracuse, Catania, Militello, Ragusa, Aci Castello, Modica, Mount Etna, Private Tour, Cooking Class, Boat Ride, 9 Nights

This was a superb trip that allowed us to combine personal visits to Taormina and Syracuse with a pre-planned group meeting in Catania. Planning and communication were excellent, supported by an app that let us easily view our itinerary, complete with phone numbers for the drivers, hotels, and the tour operator contacts.

The hotels were perfect! They were wonderfully located, with impeccable service in Taormina and Syracuse. Our excursions were private and diverse, and allowed us to combine culture, foodie interests, and free time. The guides were top-notch, knowledgeable, and flexible.

We especially loved seeing the smaller towns of Sicily; Militello, Ragusa, Aci Castello, and Modica. We even arrived in one small town during their annual festival.

We had a dedicated driver for our trip who was, himself, a treasure; always on time, always ready to adjust to changes, and a delightful personality.

This was such a good experience that we have selected Zicasso's tour operator to book another Italy trip next year.

Italy Vacation Review: Rome, Sicily, 23 Days

Everything worked out perfectly, from our first contact with Zicasso, through the planning process with Zicasso’s tour operator (our travel agent was the best!), and onto the trip itself.

We liked the process, the ability to work with a specialist with our wants, concerns, and needs, as well as the actual itinerary and follow-through on the ground. The concierge at each location (Rome and Sicily), as well as the use of WhatsApp, was a great thing to have. Not that we had any issues, but the availability was very comforting.

The guides used were fantastic! They were very knowledgeable and very personable. The drivers were prompt, friendly, and helpful. The accommodations picked were what we wanted, in the middle of things and perfect for our needs. I would just add that explaining the differences within the accommodations on room types would have been helpful. I would have probably gone with a bigger room in Ortigia if we'd been aware of the differences. We did know European rooms were smaller than what we're used to here in the States, but there was little light in the room we had and it was very small. We loved our accommodations in Agrigento and the hotel in Taormina!!!

All in all, we can't say enough; we've been telling our friends all about Zicasso and our travel agency. We would definitely use you again.

Italy Trip Review: Taormina, Agrigento, Palermo, 8 Nights

Our Zicasso travel specialist did a fantastic job planning our family vacation for five adults.

Each hotel was top-notch. At the villa in Taormina, the rooms were luxurious, with unbelievable views of the bay and Mount Etna from private verandas. The staff were gracious and the restaurant's breakfast buffet delicious. Lunch and dinner were top-notch. The hotel in Agrigento was modern and the grounds were exceptional. It was close to the Valley of the Temples, with amazing views of the ruins from each room and the beautiful infinity pool. The hotel in Palermo was old-fashioned luxury with up-to-date facilities and close to the old town.

Our tour guides and drivers were excellent.

My only regret is that we only had 10 days to explore Sicily as there was so much more to see!

Our agent did a yeoman's job helping us plan this trip.

Italy Tour Review: Sicily, Syracuse, Taormina, Catania, Wine Tasting, Food Tour, Mount Etna, 8 Nights

Our overall experience on our Sicily trip was excellent. Every day's events were amazing and perfect for my husband and me. We truly enjoyed having drivers for most of our tours, as it made it easier for us, and we did not have any worries.

I did have to call the number that was available for problems, and the gentleman who helped me was very good and prompt. Things were easily resolved.

Our only glitch was the inconsistency of English-speaking drivers, or at the minimum, being able to understand English. The driver who drove us from Syracuse to our hotel in Taormina was very bad. She did not speak or understand much English and, worst of all, we felt like she dropped us off at the back of our five-star hotel in Taormina without any instructions except “there’s your elevator.” Fortunately, I called that number and things were resolved. The driver who took us to the airport in Catania had the same issue, no English or understanding. He left us at the airport unable to give us direction as to what to do. It would have been ideal for our drivers to have at least minimal ability to communicate in English.

Zicasso’s travel specialist gave us a full and genuine experience of what Sicily is. Every day was planned out perfectly to suit our needs and abilities. We would recommend her to everyone to see and learn Sicily.
