Vieste – Arrive at Bari Airport for a Scenic Transfer to Quiet Vieste

The much loved but often-overlooked city of Bari boasts grand boulevards, a fabulous opera, and an ambiance of sophistication and youthfulness alike that emanates from the popular university. The Basilica of San Nicola, in the historical center of the city, holds relics of St. Nicholas and Castello Svevo was erected in the 12th century over ruins of a Byzantine fortress. The port bustles with commercial activity and ferries shepherding tourists to Greece against the backdrop of the glistening Adriatic Sea. Your private transfer will greet you upon your arrival at Karol Wojtyla Airport ready to escort you to the charming Gargano promontory and the seaside town of Vieste.

The scenic drive will take you along the naturally diverse landscape as it juts out and into the Adriatic to contrast with the verdant trees of Umbra Forest and accentuated by the combination of sandy beaches and historical villages. The colorful tower homes of Vieste descend down the hillside over the eastern shores of the Gargano promontory with steep cobbled lanes that are filled with the aromas of fresh espresso and grilling squid topped with freshly squeezed lemon juice. The narrow alleyways lead to open vistas where you will marvel over the Pizzomunno cliffs. Locals swim in the harbor waters or venture into the scenic protected paths of the Parco Nazionale del Gargano for a day spent cycling or hiking along the craggy slopes.

The remainder of the day will be yours to immerse yourself in the comforts of the enchanting seaside destination. The medieval center exemplifies the warren of lanes with friendly cats shuffling between the homes. The blend of history and scenery welcomes you to Vieste with a breathtaking first impression.

Detailed Description

The coastline of Puglia brings the gorgeous landscape, vibrant coastal life, and unique history relatively unknown to tourists for an authentic and enchanting adventure.  Your 7-day Italy vacation will be enjoyed as the Adriatic Sea and Ionian seas wrap around the region’s more than 308 square miles for marvelous views of azure waters against rocky cliffs, jutting promontories, and distinctive antique towns. The interior woodlands carry captivating folklore while the cafes overlooking the water host fishers retelling historical tales of the town that edge into myth.

Your gorgeous escape to Italy will begin with your arrival at Bari’s international airport. The beauty of the Adriatic coastline quickly comes into view with layers of sparkling azure, turquoise, and cobalt waters. Norman castles and Spanish forts bring a touch of the past before your reach into the present in the quiet clifftop town of Vieste. Settle into the comforts of the narrow walkways and breathtaking panoramas with six nights spent nestled into luxurious accommodations in town. The beauty of using Vieste as a home-base is that you can experience all of the pleasures of exploring the Puglian coastline and countryside without the hassle of moving to a new hotel every few nights.  This will allow you to soak up the charm and bask in the sunlight as it pours over the whitewashed walls of the old city and across the sandy beaches.

The region of Puglia opens a new vision of Italy absent of Roman ruins and medieval towns replaced by warm southern waters, verdant olive groves, magnificent seafood, and a breadth of history that spans the Phoenicians to the Spanish. Whitewashed homes overtake the image of structures crafted from brick, and the images of old women dressed in black perusing the produce at the farmers market fade to teenagers leaping from the cliffs into the depths of the sea.

Visit impressive castles and wander through the narrow medieval lanes before arriving at beautiful basilicas situated in the heart of town. Snorkel in the secluded coves of the Tremiti Islands and then bask in the shade of an olive tree before sampling the distinct flavors of the different classes of olive oil. Dive deep into the art of Southern Italian cooking by learning the array of dishes to separate the quality, consistency, and tastes of Puglia from other regions of Italy. Interested in learning more by seeing some of our travelers’ Italy vacation tour reviews? Italy Travel Review: Naples, Capri, Sorrento, Vieste, Polignano, Monopoli, Lecce, Matera, Historic Sites, Winery, 12-Day Trip

We enjoyed our trip to southern Italy. The hotels in Naples, Capri, Sorrento, Vieste, Polignano, Monopoli, Lecce, and Matera were in great locations, all near or in the historic sites.

We were able to maximize our time in each location and all hotel staff were very helpful. We especially enjoyed our hotel in Matera. However, our tour guide there did not give us the in-depth tour we were expecting.

The drivers assigned to us were very helpful and knowledgeable about the areas we were in. Our driver will be remembered fondly!

Our only concern is that we ordered wine from a Medici winery and haven't been able to contact them.

Italy Vacation Review: Polignano a Mare, Ostuni, Alberobello, Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Lecce, Otranto, Padula, Salerno

What a magical and memorable trip to southern Italy!

Thank you to Zicasso's travel agent for planning such a wonderful and very special itinerary for us. It was the trip of a lifetime! We asked you to plan a trip to southern Italy for us and our adult children to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary, and the itinerary and our experiences exceeded our expectations. We asked to visit authentic Italy, not the touristy areas, and you nailed it!

Puglia was beautiful and magical, and all of our accommodations were lovely and exactly what we wanted. We really enjoyed the different areas you chose for us so we could experience different environments. We are not sure we have a favorite place, but our sea-view room in Polignano a Mare was spectacular and the rooftop made-to-order breakfast was phenomenal! We all loved that town and also really enjoyed the boat tour of the caves!

Our other favorite towns were Ostuni, Alberobello, Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Lecce, and Otranto, and hiking along the Adriatic on the Salento Peninsula.

Another highlight was going to a Primitivo winery and having a delicious traditional lunch with tastings. What a lovely afternoon!

The most surprising and awesome place was the Sassi in Matera! The pictures you see do not do it justice. It was like going back in time or onto a movie set; simply amazing to see. Our travel team planned special accommodation for us – staying in caves – and it was an unbelievable bucket-list experience!

For this trip, the team recommended using private transport between towns because we were a family of five traveling with luggage, and navigating parking with a large van in these small towns would have been very difficult for us. We were very happy we took their advice. They hired a wonderful transportation company and the owner and driver provided us with excellent service and were so much fun to be with on our trips to each destination.

The last leg involved five days in Agropoli on the Cilento Coast (Mediterranean Sea), south of the Amalfi Coast. It was perfect. So beautiful and authentic! Our tour guide, driver, and translator were awesome, and took us on many interesting and fabulous adventures, including a visit to the Greek and Roman temples, ruins in Paestum, a tour and tasting at an organic buffalo mozzarella farm at a family-owned fig producer, and a small family-owned organic winery. All were fabulous and beyond our expectations. Experiencing the traditional foods and local wines in all of these places was another highlight.

If all of this isn’t amazing enough, we also experienced my Italian heritage. Our travel team planned a stop in Casalciprano, a very small village in the Campobasso province where my paternal grandfather was born. With the help of our new friend. I was able to meet a few townspeople who were able to find the house where my grandfather was born. I never expected that and I will treasure that moment forever. Also, we visited a museum in the house where another relative was born.

He is a famous detective from NYC and I have heard stories about him my whole life. So along with our agent's help translating for us, we enjoyed learning more about his life in Padula, a very small town in the province of Salerno. I donated some letters and a photo to the museum, and felt so connected to the people in the town. Our travel agent found a wonderful restaurant where we ate traditional foods from that region.

This was the trip of a lifetime and I thank our travel team for making our 40th anniversary a dream vacation come true! We had such a great time and can’t wait to plan our next vacation!

Italy Travel Agent Review: Alberobello, Monopoli, Lecce, Cave Tour, Ostuni Cathedral, Architecture
Since we don't want a highly planned trip, we only used this travel team to do the minimum for us.They made many suggestions for places to visit and activities that we basically did not take advantage of.  We stayed in two towns, Monopoli which we liked very much and Lecce which we liked a bit less and felt we had stayed too long. Our room in Monopoli was excellently located but Robert felt it was without Charm.  It was bright and clean but small. In Lecce our room was in a 19th Century home.  We were in a renovated stable.  We loved this room even though the shower was so tiny, Robert had to open the shower door to be able to wash his feet!!We were 1 night in Bari before heading to the air port at 5 in the morning.

Italy Family Vacation Review: Sorrento, Naples, Matera, Puglia, Positano, Capri, Pompeii, Wine & Olive Oil Tasting, Pasta Making

We (family of 4 including two teenagers) had a wonderful trip to southern Italy the last two weeks of June:  Sorrento, Naples, Matera, Polignano a Mare (Puglia region).  With Sorrento as our base we saw Positano/Amalfi Coast, Capri and Pompeii.  In Puglia we visited Ostuni, Alberobello and Lecce, went to a wine tasting (with great wine!), and visited two masserias:  one for an olive oil tasting, and another with a pasta-making class.  Our travel agent at at this company helped us to plan a great itinerary.  She was very flexible and helped us keep within our budget, and the logistics she put together were flawless.  I also felt she truly listened to what we wanted - even her first draft itinerary was very close to the mark.  Highly recommended.

Travel Review: Memorable Vacation to Italy, Florence, Tuscany, Siena, Antinori Winery Tour, Rome, Vatican Tour
Giuliana of this Italy travel company guided us every step of the way and created one of our most memorable vacations. The most impressive thing at the outset was how quickly she responded to our initial inquiry. We had never been to Italy, had not done a great deal of research, and had only a general idea of what we wanted beyond the dates (mid-May) and the cities we wanted to visit (Florence and Rome). Within a day, Giuliana submitted a detailed proposed itinerary based on a recent client request similar to ours. The proposal included various options that provided a great starting point for further discussion. She asked many questions, including our hotel preferences (small boutique, high-rise, how many stars, etc.) and suggested a number of venues that would expose us to Italy’s remarkable history and culture. The result was a vacation specifically suited to our personal tastes and interests. We spent four days in Florence and three in Rome. In Florence, we stayed at the Hotel Lungarno on the Arno River, a lovely small hotel in the heart of the city within walking distance to everything of interest, including the Uffizi and Academy museums, and the famous Duomo. It rained two nights, but we didn’t have far to go for a great dinner. The hotel restaurant was superb. One of the highlights of the Florence leg of the trip was a day tour of the Tuscany wine region that included a stopover in the historic town of Siena. We had lunch at the Osteria di Passignano, a restaurant at the Antinori vineyards where we were treated to a four course lunch and wine tasting and a tour of the winery. Fabulous. In Rome, we stayed at the Hotel Saint George. Another small, well appointed, boutique hotel, centrally located near the Tiber River, it provided access to all the essential venues, including the Vatican, Coliseum, Spanish Steps, etc. As in Florence, everything was in walking distance, including fine dining restaurants, pizzerias, espresso bars, and gelateria—and lots of places to shop. The hotel was comfortable, attractive, with a friendly and efficient staff, but we would not recommend the hotel restaurant. It was nice enough (although too brightly lit) but was virtually empty the night we were there and the food was just O.K. That wasn’t Giuliana’s fault since the hotel restaurant was not on her recommended list. We were just tired (it was our first night) and thought we’d give it a try. The hotel concierge made up for it, however, by recommending two great nearby restaurants for the remaining two nights. Neither was on Guiliana’s list, but they were terrific. A word about the logistical aspects of the trip: we viewed this as critical to the success of a customized tour with multiple venues and connections. We couldn’t have been more pleased. On arriving at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, we were greeted by Aldo who drove us to the high-speed train to Florence. After sharing an espresso with us in the station café, he made sure we got on the right train, helped us with our bags, and took us to our seats. Similar service greeted us at every connection point during the trip. Our personal tour guides, Enza (Florence), Andrea (Tuscany), and Sylvia (Rome), were exceptionally knowledgeable, personable, and fluent in English. Giuliana telephoned us at several points during the trip to confirm that we had arrived at our destination, that the drivers were on time, and that the accommodations met our expectations. Very reassuring to know she was keeping such close tabs on things. In short, all elements of transportation and personal service were impeccable. Would we visit Italy again? Without doubt. The trip simply whetted our appetites. Would we use this company? We wouldn’t consider any other service. Next time, however, we’ll make more of an effort to visit the restaurants recommended by Giuliana.
