Detailed Description
Your journey through Japan’s history and culture begins in Kyoto, the birthplace of Japanese culture. Walk through 1,000-year-old shrines and temples, meet monks, and dine on cuisine once reserved for royalty. While there, take a day trip to Nara, Japan’s first capital and home to some of the greatest examples of Buddhist architecture and design.
From Kyoto, you head by train to Kanazawa, Japan’s seafood jewel. The city is home to the country’s most talented artisans, some of whom you will get to know through a private class of your choosing. In the evening, dine at one of the best sushi restaurants in the city. There, you eat fish that were swimming in the ocean just hours before your meal.
Shirakawago and Takayama are two of the most well-preserved cities in Japan. In Shirakawago, meet and dine with local families who still live in their ancestral homes. Also, learn all about Japanese silk, and the work that goes into making this exquisite fabric. Takayama is sure to impressive you with its city blocks of beautifully preserved shops, homes, and factories. Take a rickshaw ride through the old town before visiting a sake brewery or furniture factory.
Yudanaka is famous for its snow monkeys, macaques that soak in the naturally occurring onsen baths that dot Japan’s volcanic landscape. After seeing the monkeys enjoying themselves, take the afternoon off to soak in your ryokan inn’s variety of onsen baths. In the evening, experience a traditional Japanese dinner served in your hotel room.
Tokyo is the capital of Japan, the biggest city in the world, and also the last stop on your tour. For three days, get to know the ins and outs of this dynamic and energetic city. Go on tours of Tokyo’s most famous neighborhoods and districts, or simply relax in one of the dozens of serene parks. If you’re up for an adventure, take a day trip to Nikko, burial place of Japan’s shoguns and home to some of the most ornate temples in the entire country.
This 10-day tour is perfect for solo travelers (as well as for couples, friends, or even small families). It is best taken in spring or fall when Japan’s weather is at its most comfortable for touring. Throughout the tour, your expert guide is on hand to answer questions or help you with any concerns or problems that may arise.

Four fellow travelers and I recently completed a customized fall tour in Japan. While there, we traveled from Tokyo to the Fuji, Kyoto, and Kanazawa areas. This was one of several tours organized for me by Zicasso agents. Although they have all been excellent, our agent was the most accommodating in terms of service and special requests.
The Ryokan accommodation she booked for us on Lake Kawaguchiko was out-of-this-world, with a magnificent view of Mount Fuji from our balcony.
She allowed us to leave her tour temporarily to pursue a special interest. She provided us with excellent guides in each region and arranged for them to deliver our group, which was somewhat overwhelmed by the Japanese train system, right to the door of the railway cars and have someone meet us when stepping off at the next location. She organized short-notice requests in terms of ground transport without missing a beat.
Her efficiency and response time while planning the trip were incredible, especially since I was on Canadian time and she on British. I would highly recommend her for her great skill in customizing Zicasso tours to meet your wishes and special needs.

The logistical planning was very good. Hotels met my stated criteria, train travel within Japan was scheduled nicely, and the allotted days per city worked well.
Sites and activities for each day met my expectations.
I very much appreciated the responsiveness of Zicasso’s travel agency when I was knocked out for a couple of days with food poisoning. Our guide was super-helpful in getting me to our hotel in Kyoto, as it would have been quite difficult to do so solo in my condition.
I rated four stars because the quality of the guides was inconsistent. Two guides were excellent and exposed me to places or information I wouldn't have found on my own. This is the value of having a guide. The two other guides were very nice people, but acted more like navigators than guides. I really wanted to get a good dose of architecture in Tokyo. We went to buildings, but our guide didn't know anything about architecture and spoke so softly she was difficult to understand. It was a missed opportunity for me.

Zicasso's travel specialist and her team planned an absolutely outstanding 16-day trip for me and my family. We visited Tokyo, Ghibli Park (near Nagoya), Kanazawa, Kyoto (with day trips to Nara and Osaka), and then wrapped things up with two nights at a beautiful and luxurious ryokan in Hakone.
Communication leading up to the trip was clear and efficient, and whenever we had a question during the trip, we were able to get quick answers from our travel company's rep in Japan.
I would absolutely book another trip with this company.

Zicasso’s travel specialist helped us put together a great family trip to Japan. He created the perfect itinerary based on our likes/dislikes and was easy to communicate with. We enjoyed our tour with our guide in Tokyo and were especially delighted that the travel specialist personally guided us around Kyoto. Both he and our guide showed us parts of these cities off the beaten track. The travel specialist is incredibly knowledgeable about Japan and his passion for the culture is contagious.

We just experienced amazing service and flawless execution on our custom-designed, 22-day itinerary from Zicasso’s travel company. Every single meeting went smoothly, with white-gloved drivers waiting for us beside luxury vehicles and guides who always went above and beyond. In fact, after leaving a shopping bag in a cab in Tokyo, we were blown away when our travel agency was able to track it down and deliver it back to our hotel. But that's not even the best part. The best part was the experiences. Our agent and the staff at the travel company really found the authentic, less-traveled experiences we love.
Tokyo and Kyoto were amazing, with private tours of gardens, temples, and the best local food. We did washi paper making at a 400-year-old workshop and a private calligraphy lesson, attended a real sumo practice, walked the bamboo forest, and dressed in kimonos for tea service.
But our most memorable experiences were found in Niigata, where we stayed in a lovely ryokan and were served dinner on the tatami mat in our room. We slept soundly with the relaxing sound of the hot spring water flowing in our private bath.
In Yamagata, where we spent the day with an enchanting Yamabushi guide, climbing sacred Mount Haguro and learning about the life of connection with nature that he chose. We loved it when he blew his conch shell horn to scare away the demons as we entered new parts of the forest.
And in Okinawa, we had the most interesting Blue Zones cooking class and lunch with Yukie Miyaguni, who appeared in the Netflix documentary about longevity and medicinal foods, and looks 25 years old at 55. We also learned about the ancient art of sabani making and spent an afternoon on the beautiful clear waters in one, visiting pristine, remote beaches and collecting beautiful pink shells.
It was these unique, enlightening experiences, away from crowds and tourists, that showed us the real Japan we wanted to see. Our agent understood what we wanted and provided the absolute perfect mix of luxury (every accommodation exceeded our expectations, with club lounge access in Western-style hotels), adventure, and top-shelf service. It was perfect.

We (A and B) had an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime, 36-day trip to Japan and were very grateful we found Zicasso’s travel specialist to help us plan our itinerary.
The travel specialist made sure that all our travel arrangements were well thought out and his instructions were (mostly) straightforward. He was a good listener and helped us craft an itinerary that totally suited our needs. We had about four sessions (hours) on Zoom with him before our trip to iron out details. A company that does customized tours was exactly what we were looking for and that is what we got. This way, we had a lot of say in where to go, how long to stay, how we wanted to spend our time, and what attractions we wanted to see. He told us ours was the longest trip to Japan he had helped arrange.
The trip was amazing and we were blessed to be able to see the spectacular fall foliage everywhere we went, Mount Fuji on numerous days, and many beautiful places, as well as eat authentic Japanese food and immerse ourselves in Japanese culture. In addition to all that, we had many days on our own where we were able to meet up with 12 friends of B in three different cities, people B met 45 years ago in Japan.
All the arrangements made for us by the travel company were fantastic, including local transportation, drivers in every city, and train and shinkansen rides. The accommodations were excellent too and we especially appreciated that the location of our hotels was very convenient and in the best areas. The two stays in ryokans in Hakone and Miyajima were unique and special.
Every single local guide we had was fantastic. They were all knowledgeable, friendly, personable, helpful, and kind. The drivers were terrific too and we enjoyed meeting them and talking with them.
We highly recommend this travel company if you are looking for a customized, comprehensive, and fun tour of Japan.
