Madrid – Arrival to Madrid and Tailored Picnic in Retiro Park

You will arrive at Madrid’s major international airport, which provides all the necessary comforts and luxuries for the weary traveler. Ready to whisk you away to your luxury hotel, a private transfer will whisk you from the busy terminal to the city center, where you will find your luxurious hotel that fit for royalty. After you settle in, you will be greeted by your private guide who will acquaint you with the Spanish capital by giving you some general information and a short tour of the Centro Historico or old center of the city. This will provide you and your partner with the opportunity to stretch your legs after your journey and take in this new environment at a reasonable pace. Your introduction to Spain will conclude with a prepared picnic that will be waiting for you at El Retiro Park, which is the famous common area to the East of the center that boasts miles of walking paths and numerous places for you to spend time to yourselves.

Spain has been a top European travel destination for centuries. Madrid, which has remained the Spanish capital since 1561, is no exception and possesses all the art, food, music, and architecture that you would expect from such a cosmopolitan city. The founding of the city dates back much further than 1561, and you can still see the occasional reminder of its medieval past as it pokes through the more recent development. The city center stretches between the Palacio Real, which is an 18th-century royal palace that is loosely based on Versailles, and El Retiro Park. This space contains crisscrossing allies and wider boulevards that offer you secluded resting places to find refreshment in addition to hip shops that display some of the latest in Spanish fashion.

As you stroll through the gardens of El Retiro park, you will see plenty of evidence to support how European city parks occupy the important role of offering a source of diversion for the locals. It is big enough to offer you the feelings of while also feeling small enough that there is always an outdoor cafe or vendor nearby to offer you a refreshing treat. As you savor the contents of your tailored picnic, you will be able to sample some Spanish snacks all while participating in an exclusive Spanish pastime of spending your afternoon in the once-private playground of Spanish royalty.

Across nine days of luxurious accommodations and private tours, your travels will take you to the central highlands of Madrid, the Andalusian splendor of Seville, and finally to the rugged shores of Barcelona. In Madrid, you will imitate royalty with a curated picnic in El Retiro Park, which was the previous private estate of Spain’s ruling class. In Seville, you will indulge your senses in a visit to an Andalusian spa, where you will dip into the thermal baths for the ultimate, relaxing experience. Next, Barcelona will beckon to you with the promise of savory seafood dishes and a visit to the nearby slopes of Montserrat.

The best times to travel are mid-Spring and Fall when the crowds have not reached a peak, and the blooming bouquets and gardens of Madrid and Seville offer their colorful contributions to the eyes and noses of visitors. Likewise, temperatures during these seasons are usually mild with comfortable clothes and shoes being the recommended fashion. Luckily though, the majority of Spain’s culinary, musical, and cultural heritage is accessible year-round, furnishing enough insights for even the most curious traveler.

Travel Review: Luxury Vacation to Spain and Portugal, Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, Ronda, Seville, Toledo, Cordoba, Montserrat
Belen, with this Spain and Portugal tour operator, was very helpful and responsive to our needs. She patiently responded to each request for information, advice, and arrangement. Since we were in Spain for two weeks and visited Madrid, Barcelona, Granada, Ronda, and Sevilla with day trips to Toledo, Montserrat, and Cordoba, Belen had to keep a lot of details straight including numerous changes we made as the planning process progressed. She followed through as promised. Everything went smoothly. There were two couples in our group so we had one trip package with vouchers mailed to us in the States prior to departure with the second package waiting for us at our first hotel. Belen sent a fax to one of our hotels with a last minute change in tour provider after she called our cell phone (US only) and left a message about the change. We felt she was committed to ensuring our trip was a success. The lodging selections were very nice, comfortable, and centrally located in each location where we stayed. We would use Belen's services again should we return to Spain. Our third week was in Portugal at a timeshare so we did not use Belen for planning that week. She did, however, provide a Portugal map and tourist information without us having asked. Great customer service!

Spain Vacation Review: Palaces, Museums, Cooking Class, Flamenco Show, 10-Day Tour

From start to finish, we were extremely happy with all the services and communication provided by Zicasso’s tour operator. They helped us create a perfect itinerary and made sure we had continuous communication through WhatsApp during our travels. I have used Zicasso twice before for trips to Southeast Asia and Italy, and both experiences were excellent. This was also the case for our Spain trip, showing that pretty much anywhere in the world, you are put in touch with reputable travel agencies that will provide exceptional service. Our travel agent was always responsive, professional, and very committed to helping us with every aspect of our trip.

Our tour included Madrid, Granada, Sevilla, and Barcelona, with several special tours, meals, and events in each place. While in Madrid, we took a day trip to Toledo and also saw a flamenco show with dinner. We had plenty of time to tour the famous sites in Madrid, eat tapas, and do some shopping. The hotel was excellent! We decided to upgrade for a fee when we arrived to have early access to the room, and it was worth every penny. We enjoyed all of the hotels that were selected for us on this trip.

Moving between cities by train was also a relaxing and efficient way to travel in Spain. A true highlight was the tour of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, with its spectacular history and views. Sevilla was also wonderful, but hard to navigate as we visited during Semana Santa and several streets were closed (and there were crowds of thousands) for the holy processions. It was very special to get to see the processions, but not ideal for touring the city.

We ended our trip in Barcelona and loved a special group cooking class arranged by our tour operator, and also a day trip to Montserrat. It was my daughter's birthday and our travel agent and her team helped us book a dinner reservation at a wonderful restaurant to celebrate. They also helped us with a dinner reservation for one of our nights in Madrid.

All of our transportation between trains/hotels/airports and cities was excellent, with very nice drivers and luxury vehicles!

Thank you to all of the tour operator’s staff and service providers for making our trip so special. We highly recommend the company for your trip to Spain.

Tour Review: Spain & Morocco Family Trip, Barcelona, Montserrat, Valencia, Madrid, Toledo, Marrakesh, History & Culture

Our travel planner and his team did a fantastic job organizing my family's recent 12-day trip to Spain (10 days) and Morocco (2 days). Very pleased. We went to Barcelona, Montserrat, Valencia, Madrid, Toledo, Sevilla, Granada and Marrakech in a fast-paced tour during the less crowded month of February and it was amazing. Our travel planner worked with the budget I provided and the interests I specified to make sure that this was the trip of a lifetime! All the hotel, transport and tour arrangements went smoothly and it was well organized. Considering the eight cities, hotel, plane, train and tour details, this was very comforting. I liked that a printed copy of each item and ticket in the itinerary was ready for us when we arrived in Barcelona just in case. And when I had a couple of requests in Sevilla and Marrakech, our travel planner was available by phone to make both things happen! Many thanks!

Travel Review: Tour of Spain, Madrid, Barcelona, Cordoba, Montserrat, Prado Museum, Alhambra, Gaudi Architecture, Soccer

Our travel company listened to what we wanted and planned it extremely well.  Guides were excellent.  Hotels adequate. Overall the trip was wonderful.

There were two negatives:

1. We didn't realize we would have to negotiate the bewildering Madrid train station on our own.

2. The guide to Montserrat from Barcelona was impossible to see or hear in such a large crowd so we left the tour and went on our own. That company should be required to use earphones and audio.

Spain Vacation Review: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Montserrat, Toledo, Ronda, Cordoba, Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Royal Palace
We have wanted to visit Spain for years, for the architecture, art, and food. This tour went beyond all our expectations. We were given such a thorough experience that Spain has entered into our souls in so many ways.We cannot wait to return and introduce other family members to the joys of traveling Spain. Somehow our tour planner, Rosa, was able to fit into 9 days a true feel for Spain and its many layers. Because of her experience in planning she created a trip that included 3 major cities and their highlights, Barcelona, Madrid, and Sevilla. Plus day trips surrounding those areas, to Montserrat, Toledo, Ronda, and Cordoba. We chose a mixture of private tours and group tours. Rosa managed to still give us time to explore each area on our own. We never felt rushed, in fact, having all tour elements planned for us such as train and plane tickets, all entrance tickets, and an APP to follow every step of the way, made us feel very relaxed. As our families trip planner, I never felt a moment of concern that we would miss a connection, not find our guides, have trouble finding a taxi, etc. It was such a stress free experience!

Spain Luxury Vacation Review, Madrid Wine & Tapas Tour, Countryside & Cities, Local Food & Drink
Our trip planner did an outstanding job of creating the prefect customized trip. My husband and I had looked at organized tours, but in the end, for about the same money, we did exactly what we wanted to do. Our trip included travel to six cities (Madrid, Toledo, Seville, Cordoba, Granda and Barcelona) in 12 days. The transportation to and from each city was well executed and made the trip so enjoyable.  The guides in each city were local and provided lots of history in addition to personal stories about their home towns. Our wine and tapas tour in Madrid was such a success, that some of group met up the next night for dinner. The hotel recommendations exceeded our expectations for location, amenities and service. In addition, each hotel provided a large breakfast buffet with bread, meat, cheese, jamon, eggs, fresh fruit and juices. We had plenty of options to fuel our morning tours and hold us over until the 2pm lunch hour. We walked about ten miles each day and ate tapas and drank Sangria at almost every meal!In addition, the trip planner checked in with us multiple times during the trip to verify all was going well. Overall one of our best vacations!!
